This is how it works

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Players are grouped by ability, so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA
  • For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three tie break sets; if a set reaches 6 games all, it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are grouped according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Everyone in the group plays each other once during the round
  • You get one point for each set you win
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of each group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winners get a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of the groups (and sometimes the top two) are promoted for the next round; those who come bottom (and sometimes the bottom two) are demoted

Reveal CommentSamuel Shutt bt Rob Hawke (Aug 23) 6-2, 6-2

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "After 3 hours of torrential rain the sun came out just in time for this match. A fun and attacking game of tennis with a lot of very tight games, especially in the second set which wasn't reflected in the scoreline. Looking forward to the next encounter! " -- Samuel
Reveal CommentSamuel Shutt bt Santiago Peluffo (Aug 18) 7-5, 6-0

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Santiago raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set, and if we'd been on the Argentinian clay rather than a capricious south London hard court this match would have been over very quickly. Luckily my serve brought me back into it, and after a nervy end to the first set I was able to keep the momentum in the second. A really enjoyable match. " -- Samuel
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Santiago Peluffo (Aug 16) 6-3, 7-5

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Some decent rallies for an early Sunday morning match. Santiago was a bit rusty in the beginning after some time off but his game seemed to pick up pace in the second and I was grateful to not have been pushed to an uncertain third set. Looking forward to our next match!" -- David
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Samuel Shutt (Aug 7) 6-1, 6-0

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A really enjoyable contest to open up our Group 1 accounts for this round. Sam's serve is a force to be reckoned with and secured him plenty of free points, leading to closely-fought games that weren't reflected in the final score. A beautiful summer's evening at Kennington - is there a finer way to spend an August Friday night?!" -- Timothy

Reveal CommentAlex Seigel bt Marcos Fernandez (Aug 15) 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Alex raced 4-0 up in about 10 minutes, his consistency, top spin forehand and strong first serve were all a bit much for me but then I settled into my own game and got things back to 4-4. We went to tie-break and Alex pipped me in an epic first set that took an hour to finish.

I felt more comfortable in the second set and we were matching each other - both of us stronger on our forehands and more tactical on our sliced backhands. It was hot the rallies were long at times but really enjoyable.

We again got to 4-4 in the final set approaching the 2 hour mark but I ran out of steam a bit, having not played a match at this level for a long time. A great game and win for Alex and I look forward to playing him again.

  • "Lovely day for tennis, if not a bit too hot! We both played well for most of the match, with just a few dodgy service games here and there. But overall it was very enjoyable." -- Patrick
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Thom Jeffery (Aug 6) 7-5, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A slow start from Thom in his first game for a long time but he stormed back from 4-1 down to 5-5 and made a battle of the first set. Reveal CommentOllie Tomlins & Hugh Sultoon bt Oscar Howie & Ali Kyrke-Smith (Jul 9) 6-4, 6-1

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Kyrke-Smith/Howie lured the as yet unbeaten Shopkeepers from their home from home in Brockwell down to their backyard in Vauxhall, unfamiliar territory for the travelling pair. The tube strike threatened to postpone the fixture, but neither the players nor the fans allowed the apparent impossibility of securing a Boris bike to stop them from getting to the court.
After some dispute over the legitimacy of the court booking, the first set got underway. Momentum swung in both directions but first blood went to the Shopkeepers, who were wearing their recognisable brand of red and white, a tribute to John and Mary Ann.
The Vauxhall faithful were out in strong numbers and they were treated to the full array of tennis shots in the second set as the quality of the rallies hit dizzying heights. Kyrke-Smith/Howie played their part but the Shopkeepers consolidated their lead to secure their fourth victory on the trot.
In Wimbledon finals week, the Shopkeepers will wonder what could have been if they'd been granted a wildcard entry.

Thank you for the game and booking the court (if you say so....)" -- Ollie

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Another sun-kissed eve at fortress Brockwell bore witness to an international clash between the Shopkeepers and the Dunns. After coming through the first set, local Brixtonians were treated to some jaw-dropping doubles tennis from both sides until the Shopkeepers eventually saw off a spirited comeback. Thanks for a great match!
    From Hugh" -- Ollie
Reveal CommentOllie Tomlins & Hugh Sultoon bt Rachael Shaw & Kevin Saunders (Jun 16) 5-7, 6-0, 6-2

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "In the evening sun of the Brockwell plains, two well-matched pairs went head to head. After taking the opener, heady fumes of recreational medicines nearby and a waivering serve were too difficult for Saunders/Shaw to overcome and the Shopkeepers capitalised, winning a second match on the bounce coming from a set down. All credit to our tireless conditioning coach who's proving the difference this season. Thanks for the game!" -- Ollie

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A closely contended three setter - really close first set (despite the distractions from a rather interesting group of spectators) and then then a couple of big swings of momentum in both directions in the 2nd and 3rd. Thanks for a fun game!" -- Amanda
