This is how it works

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Players are grouped by ability, so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA
  • For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three tie break sets; if a set reaches 6 games all, it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are grouped according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Everyone in the group plays each other once during the round
  • You get one point for each set you win
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of each group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winners get a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of the groups (and sometimes the top two) are promoted for the next round; those who come bottom (and sometimes the bottom two) are demoted

MATCH RESULTS:

Rob Hawke bt Andy Shanks (Jun 28) 7-5, 6-2
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Omar Cader (Jun 27) 6-1, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A thoroughly enjoyable match on a glorious day for tennis. Omar's game gets stronger every time we play, and if it hadn't been for a broken string in the knock-up the first set would have no doubt been even tighter. The second set was a great contest, with Omar hitting many aces and some stunning groundstrokes." -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Kevin Marinilli (Jun 26) 6-0, 6-0

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Perhaps we should have taken the hint when our conversations on the way to the court were dominated by injury tales and physio recommendations! There were some long rallies and audacious winners hit by Kevin, and I just concentrated on hanging in there. The good news was that we both finished with our bodies not completely broken!" -- Timothy
Reveal CommentStevan Jovic bt Timothy Jones (Jun 24) 6-1, 6-2

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "This was one of the better matches I've played in a long time and credit for that also goes to Tim who forced me to elevate my game. This was quite a physical match and I found myself pulling a Nadal on more than one occasion, as I needed a long time between points to catch my breath after the numerous intense rallies. A great match overall!" -- Stevan
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Rob Hawke (Jun 23) 6-4, 7-5

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Excellent tennis on a muggy Tuesday evening at Kennington. Both players repeatedly challenged one another and I was happy to escape on top of such a well balanced game. Many long rallies really tested our physical resilience and we conveniently ended as the floodlights were being shut off" -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Kevin Saunders (Jun 22) 4-6, 6-3, 7-5

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A fun battle with Kevin, really a story of peaks and valleys as both of us had chances to put one another away. Was quite lucky in the last set as Kevin rallied in dramatic fashion from match point down at 5-1 to tie it at 5 apiece before I pulled away, taking advantage of a few near misses from Kevin's deadly forehand. Looking forward to the next match!" -- David
Reveal CommentStevan Jovic bt David Jovic (Jun 20) 6-1, 7-5

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "With helicopters hovering overhead, trains passing by every two minutes and constant ambulance sirens, this match tested our ability to stay focused on our tennis. It was a good match overall and both of us had our moments, with David dominating the second set before I managed to come back and secure the victory. " -- Stevan
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt David Jovic (Jun 19) 6-2, 6-2

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Another cracking match against David, and the second set in particular was a real battle of attrition - a different outcome on a point here and there and we would have definitely been into a third set... and that would have been extremely tight. It's a long time since heat was a factor in one of my matches, but the high temperatures took their toll on both of us, especially with rallies of ever-increasing length. Ever the sportsman and gentleman, I am indebted to David for giving me time to stretch out my cramp on match point - even if the subsequent drop shot he played was rather cruel!" -- Timothy
Kevin Saunders bt Rob Hawke (Jun 19) 6-2, 6-1
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Andy Shanks (Jun 17) 6-1, 6-2

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "The fact that we played for almost 2 hours is a better reflection of this match than the scoreline. It's always a real pleasure to play Andy; despite a gusting wind we enjoyed many hard-fought and energy-sapping rallies, and if Andy's serve hadn't been affected by played with a filed-down second choice racquet I'm sure the contest would have been even tighter." -- Timothy
Rob Hawke bt Kevin Marinilli (Jun 16) 6-3, 6-0
Reveal CommentOmar Cader bt Andy Shanks (Jun 14) 6-0, 6-1

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A Story of three rackets. Andy's main one string went in the warm up, i lent him my spare which totally ruined his timing in the first set, and then his own spare took a while to get going in the second. I managed to take full advantage, in what looks like a very strong Group 1 this time out " -- Omar
Reveal CommentKevin Marinilli bt Andy Shanks (Jun 10) 7-6 (7-4), 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A close thought match that could have gone either way, with the first set taking over an hour. Neither of us being able to keep the lead and the set eventually headed into a tie break after some long rallies. The wind picked up in the second which again was a closely thought set with the last point being played just before the lights turned off!" -- Kevin
Reveal CommentStevan Jovic bt Rob Hawke (Jun 7) 6-4, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "What a beautiful day to play tennis! I think Rob and I did justice to the perfect conditions by playing some excellent tennis. There were many great rallies in this match and a few cracking winners too. Highly enjoyable tennis" -- Stevan
Reveal CommentStevan Jovic bt Andy Shanks (Jun 5) 6-3, 6-0

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "I always enjoy playing Andy, with his consistent play and strong ground strokes. On probably the nicest day of the year so far, the conditions for tennis were unfortunately not ideal - some heavy wind and strong sunshine caused us a lot of problems. The first set was good fun and hard fought, but the conditions deteriorated in the second set, making it quite challenging to play" -- Stevan
Reveal CommentStevan Jovic bt Kevin Saunders (May 28) 6-1, 7-6

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "It was good to see Kevin back in group one. In fact, It felt like he had never left as this match was pretty much the exact replica of our previous encounter. A short first set was followed by a hard fought second one that went down to the wire. Until the very last point, it was looking like we were heading for a third set which would have certainly spelled trouble for me, as Kevin was starting to find his touch on his unbeatable forehand. All in all, a great way to start the round" -- Stevan
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Andy Shanks (May 27) 6-4, 7-5

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Another great battle during which I was quite lucky to make it back from 3 games down in both sets. In the end, Andy was able to save two match points despite debilitating cramps. Looking forward to the next encounter!" -- David

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Another sun-kissed eve at fortress Brockwell bore witness to an international clash between the Shopkeepers and the Dunns. After coming through the first set, local Brixtonians were treated to some jaw-dropping doubles tennis from both sides until the Shopkeepers eventually saw off a spirited comeback. Thanks for a great match!

Reveal CommentOllie Tomlins & Hugh Sultoon bt Rachael Shaw & Kevin Saunders (Jun 16) 5-7, 6-0, 6-2

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "In the evening sun of the Brockwell plains, two well-matched pairs went head to head. After taking the opener, heady fumes of recreational medicines nearby and a waivering serve were too difficult for Saunders/Shaw to overcome and the Shopkeepers capitalised, winning a second match on the bounce coming from a set down. All credit to our tireless conditioning coach who's proving the difference this season. Thanks for the game!" -- Ollie
