Hendon Park Tennis League: Singles Round 5

Hendon Park Tennis League: Singles Round 5
Monday March 21st to Sunday May 15th, 2011

Many apologies for not getting this to you sooner. We have been away in Italy, running our first tennis holiday and got a little behind.  Many thanks for taking part in the last round of the Hendon Park Tennis League, and for getting so many matches played. we do hope you enjoyed it.

GROUP ONE
Winner: Chris Morton
It was a great shame Gigi had to retire from this round with a shoulder injury, as Chris Morton reckoned he would have given him a real run for the top spot. "We had a good match last time but I lost to his brother," recalled Chris. Unfortunately, there was no chance of a re-match this time and with Gigi out, Chris had a clear run to the top of the group. Not that there weren't some good matches elsewhere

Ibrahim Mahdi beat Stuart in a match he ways "as a lot closer than the score looks" and though Gamy also beat Stuart, Stuart put up a great fight:
"It was a great and hard fought match. Stuart played his shots well, he has a very different playing style which makes it difficult and chases all the balls, working really hard. He started well, leading 2-0 on both sets due to nerves but I did stick with him with long rallies during the games and change my game style by attacking the net. Eventually I overcame my nerves and steady with my service games."
Gamy also beat Barbara in his first match.
"Both players are rusty at the start, in the 1st set all of the games went to deuce however nerves got to barbara not converting the chances. i am a bit consistent with my game just returning balls and not to do errors, she was starting to up her game with good serves but I was able to control the match from the beginning."
All in all it was enough to put Gamy in second place, but it is Chris who emerged the clear winner. Well played!

GROUP TWO
Winner: Nigel Genis
Zach can count himself unlucky not to have notched up another match or got his bonus points. But finishing as the runner up, he can at least look back on some fine tennis. Back in April, he beat Rafal in 3 sets over two days and said:
"A very close match, nearly 3 hours on court. Rafal’s power vs Zachary’s slightly greater consistency"
But Adam turned the tables when he took on Zach in another 3 set thriller. Adam wrote:
"In a classic encounter, Katten fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the 2nd set to record a famous victory against his good friend Citron. The game was played over 2 sessions and lasted in excess of 3 hours. In a topsy turvy encounter, Citron initially fought back from being behind 5-3 in the first set to reel off 7 straight games and to be seemingly cruising to a straight sets victory.  However, Katten summoned all his determination along with some powerful serving to fight back by winning the next 5 games and taking the second set 6-4. The third set was going the way of Citron before Katten showed more consistency in taking the last 5 games and completing a great win."
Zach also actually beat the group winner, Nigel, bringing to an end his 5 win-run. But Nigel, who lost just five games in five matches is the very worthy winner this time, and has more than earned promotion to the next group. Well played!

Mid way point for 2 bonus points and a FREE tube of tennis balls is: Sunday April 17th, 2011
