Kingsway Tennis League: Singles Round Nine

Round 9
Monday 18th April to Sunday 12th June 2011
Wimbledon may be getting underway, but we have important results and winners of our own!

This was a fantastic round, both in terms of the tennis and the number of matches played. Seventy one times (out of a possible 100) players met for a game, which is brilliant and we have many new champions.  Thank you very much as always for all your hard work in arranging so many fixtures.
As you know, we are experimenting with shorter gaps between rounds and the next starts this coming Monday. Marcos kindly emailed to say: "Thanks again for the tournament. All the players in my group were the same level, all the games were very exciting and it is a very good idea to shorten the time between rounds as I do miss playing."  Do hope that goes for you all, but please let us know!

GROUP ONE
Winner: Roy Gascoine
Dylan has made this group his own in recent rounds and when he came on our tennis holiday to Lake Garda, we realised why!  A brilliant player and competitor who never gives up, it is no surprise he has been such a hard man to beat (indeed he won our tournament in Italy). But he was away for much of this round, and Roy took full advantage   finishing five points clear of him, Martin and Simon (all previous winners of this group). On the last day Roy and Martin were unable to finish their match due to persistent rain, denying Martin the chance to take second place outright. Martin was unable to get going until a month into the round and said:

“I have not been having much luck with my games.  Alex and I played on Thursday (19 May).  I won the first set 6-2,  Alex then conceded with an injured shoulder.   We tried playing the week before but he was suffering from an injury then too.”
Elsewhere in the group, Iain made his debut in Kingsway, having moved to Brighton from south London where he was a great addition to our Wimbledon Park Tennis League, and Brian looked as he would have been a great contender had not dodgy legs got the better of him, forcing him to retire in his matches. He did however take on fellow leftie Dylan in high winds:
"I hoping to have another hit with him one day - and we'll try to avoid the hurricane." (Hope you do Brian!)

Roy meanwhile, was playing a great round. He won his first three matches with the loss of just six games, and got his bonus points. He was on his way to splitting sets with Brian, when Brian had to retire, leaving the match at a tantalising 6-7, 5-2, and on the final day of the round, notched up one more point for a set one in his unfinished match against Martin.  A great performance.

GROUP TWO
Winner: Marcos de Jesus
Marcos wasn’t only the most successful player in the group – he was also the keenest, being the only one who played all six of his competitors in the group who were active. Olga, who had been busy with exams, had hoped to get underway in the last six days, but it was not be be and injury unfortunately forced Rob to retire. None of this however should take away from Marcos who came through some tough matches to win. Group one now beckons!

GROUP THREE
Winner: Kether Clouder
This group had an almost 100% record of matches played, leaving just a single one unplayed.  Of the six players in contention, four played the maximum five matches and the others achieved four. Well done! Almost everyone also got their bonus points and Kether and George tied at the top with 11 points apiece. Kether gets the verdict through having beaten George 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 when they met. It was the third of his five matches to go to three sets in this keenly contested group, so a great performance to come through on top.

GROUP FOUR
Winner: Dan Armitage
Another extremely busy group, with four of the seven players taking part in a maximum six matches. In fact, only two of the possible encounters didn't happen and Dan wasted no time in fulfilling his quota and had finished by 21 May, with three weeks to spare. A very sensible strategy, as Dan took advantage of all the good weather and was sitting pretty when the rains came. Well done, Dan, who finishes four clear points ahead.

GROUP FIVE
Winner: Tim Pulham
"Just giving passing on results from my first competitive match, EVER against Den," wrote Mary back in April. "We had a brilliant match, we both thoroughly enjoyed playing as we were very evenly matched with loads of deuces." She clocked up another two wins after that and with bonus points tied at the top of the group - a great achievement for someone who has never played tennis before this event.
Den was chuffed to bits after recovering from a terrible start to beat James:
“Just letting you know the result of my match against James Pritchard: 0-6, 6-1, 7-5, so at last I've won a match.”

But it is Tim wins the group on two counts. In the event of a tie, we deduct bonus points and Tim got to the top of the group without any! He also beat Mary in their own match. In fact Tim was not seriously challenged this round, but if he continues next time, we hope to make it much tougher in a higher group! But a great round, well played.

Well played all. The winners will be getting their £20 cheques and certificates and we hope to welcome you all back to round 10.
