MATCH RESULTS:

Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Charles Van Caloen (Aug 25) 6-0, 6-0

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "After postponing because of a torrential downpour at the weekend, we found ourselves playing in the middle of a heat-wave. Charles and I had some good rallies, but it was just one of those days when luck was on my side and everything fell in my favour - perhaps exemplified when one backhand volley I hit rolled along most of the net tape before trickling on to Charles's side of the court." -- Timothy
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt David Jovic (Aug 24) 7-6 (7-3), 6-4

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Despite the 8pm start in Kennington tonight it was 30 degrees heat when we started and it also rained for the opening few games!!

Having lost easily to David last time around this was never going to be easy but I've been playing well so was more confident this time around. I managed to squander a 4-2 lead in the first set to go 5-4 down but fought back to force a tiebreaker. There really was nothing between us in the first set, the standard was high and we were both finding it hard to break service. The humidity was punishing for sure and we were both sweaty messes by the end!! I was able to edge the tiebreaker luckily and take my first set against David.

The second set was a definitely a battle. We both go for our shots and pounce on every short ball opportunity. David has a lovely top spin whippy forehand which I can't read and he had a lot of joy with it. At 4-4 I managed to break in a long game and then hold my next service game to see out the match 6-4. Definitely happy to win this one and look forward to playing David again! Lots of competition now in Group 1!" -- Marcos

Reveal CommentNick White bt Timothy Jones (Aug 23) 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5)

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Almost too close to call and with the light fading as well as weary limbs the rally's got higher and higher and longer and longer. While not high quality it was sheer perseverance and concentration that got Nick back from 5-2 down in the second set to go on to take it in the third." -- Nick
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Samuel Shutt (Aug 23) 6-2, 3-6, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "What a stunning game of tennis!!! Humid and hot for the first set - I was a bit flattered to win it 6-2 tbh and could see Sam was playing a lot better than when we last met. His serve is technically the best I've come across in these leagues and when he gets it flowing its such a weapon. Sam went all out attack in the second set and raced 3-0 ahead in about 5 minutes!! I could only watch the winners go past me and admire his forehand, maybe technically the best forehand too on tonight's evidence- like me he likes to smash or swip every short ball so I was under pressure to hit with depth every time. I clawed one game but Sam deservedly took the second set 6-3.

By the final set the floodlights were on and it was a beautiful balmy summer's night and I knew it would be a fun finale!! Sam broke me in the first game and I was worried but quickly broke back and held to go up 2-1. Sam held for 2-2. At this point we were both smashing the ball and hitting it well so well - totally in our zones!! Every point seemed to end with a winner rather than an error. Sam was showing his full range of shots too, lost count of how many times I got drop shotted! I broke Sam at 3-2 to go 4-2 up and was hopeful this would be enough. I broke again in a long close decisive game to go 5-2. Sam got one back but I served it out just about. So relieved to win this game as I don't think I was the best player. Even that coach dude who is always on Court 1 stopped us and told Sam his inside out forehand was a great shot and to use it more so listen to the coach Sam lol. Until next time! " -- Marcos

Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Adrian Britton (Aug 21) 6-3, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "It'a a challenge to play Adrian and always ends up being a serious workout with the usual flurry of lobs, drop shots and slices preventing me from getting into a real rhythm on a hot day in Kennington" -- David
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Samuel Shutt (Aug 19) 6-2, 6-1

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Sam looked like he was in fine form, sending down aces and service winners in his first game and racing into a 2-0 lead. Fortunately for me I got a bit more of a look in after that, although Sam continued to hit some super groundstroke winners. The very slippy courts meant the conditions were far from ideal, which definitely impacted on many of the points, and I was pleased to be able to get across the finishing line with my nose in front." -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt David Jovic (Aug 18) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "You're always guaranteed a really good match against David, and this was definitely no exception. A closely-fought tight first set was won by David with some super winners that I could do nothing about. The second and third sets were equally close, albeit both of us seemed to be struggling to find a good rhythm. David maintained the intensity until the end, forcing me to serve it out as the match clock approached two hours. Already looking forward to our next encounter!" -- Timothy
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Charles Van Caloen (Aug 17) 6-4, 6-1

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Beautiful evening out at Larkhall Park. First set lasted for ever with multiple games going to deuce several times. Charles had to run to get water in between sets which may have put him slightly out of rhythm with his otherwise quality ground strokes." -- David
Samuel Shutt bt Charles Van Caloen (Aug 16) 6-4, 6-2
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Adrian Britton (Aug 16) 6-1, 6-0

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Basking in both the warmth of a beautiful summer evening and the glow of being a newly-wed, Adrian was in fine form for this match - sending down some terrific serves to accompany his consistently tricky groundstrokes. As ever it was a real war of attrition with Adrian, and with many of the games going to deuce the final scoreline doesn't do justice to the match. The fifth game of the second set was a particular highlight... I'm not saying the exhaustingly long points were the same as Delpo v. Murray, but hey, they weren't far off!" -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Marcos Fernandez (Aug 9) 4-6, 6-1, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "It looks like I might have left it rather late to begin my title defence, but this was a cracking match with which to start. It felt as though the first set was full of really good quality tennis - albeit pretty much all of it coming from Marcos with his blistering groundstrokes. After exchanging breaks early on I was left playing catch-up, repeatedly managing to break Marcos only to be broken myself before I could draw level. The final game of the set encapsulated it beautifully, with at least 10 deuces before Marcos clinched it with a sumptuous cross-court forehand. After the exertions of the first set, the standard inevitably dropped a bit, yet each game remained closely fought and hard-won. I was fortunate to open up a 5-1 lead in the final set, but Marcos has a well-deserved reputation for comebacks - which meant I was swamped with feelings of relief when I just about managed to close out the match." -- Timothy
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Nick White (Aug 6) 7-6 (7-1), 6-4

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Always a pleasure to play Nick as he is not afraid to move into the court, a bit of a rarity in this league. Happy to have ended it in 2 with the dodgiest of overheads as my fitness would not have allowed me to continue for a 3rd!" -- David
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Nick White (Jul 31) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Having played Nick many times I knew this would be tough as usual. We know each others games inside out at this stage so it's always a great game. I could see in the warm up today Nick was hitting the ball really well and hard....yes even in the warm up!! The first set was pretty even with no breaks of serve until I was 5-4 up and broke to take the first set 6-4. Nick broke my serve in the opening game of the second and held his own to go 2-0 up At 4-2 down I fought back to level it at 4-4.....I really didnt want a 3rd set, it was hot and the rallies were punishing. Nick played more aggressively than ever and some of his shots I had no answers to off both sides and he was serving well.

Nick held his serve to take the next couple of games and win the second set 6-4. My form dropped off massively and Nick was dominating everything....he was playing better than ever and won the next 3 games to go 3-0 up in the final set - all over surely it seemed. He told me on the change over there was only 25 mins and would we get it finished?? I think this was spurred me as I rattled off 4 games in about 15 minutes to go ahead....all out attack. At 4-3 up we had a long game but I managed to break again and I think Nick was done at this point. At 5-3 up I served out the game to win 6 in a row......had to go one better than Nick's 5 in a row!! Amazing game and quality and look forward to playing Nick again!!!" -- Marcos

Marcos Fernandez bt Charles Van Caloen (Jul 20) 6-1, 7-5
Reveal CommentAdrian Britton bt Charles Van Caloen (Jul 18) 4-6, 6-2, 6-2

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A tough match which went all the way on an incredibly hot evening in Larkhall Park. " -- Adrian
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Adrian Britton (Jul 3) 1-6, 6-0, 6-3

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Beautiful day for Tennis! Having lost to Adrian last time we met I know this would be tricky. His relentless slices and spin shoots are very tricky to cope with. After losing the first set 6-1 I thought the game was lost then I remember how to hit a winner and played to my strengths taking the ball early to attack and not getting involved in the long rallies I kept losing in the first set. The Final set was tough but good quality - we had some long crazy exchanges with drop shots, lobs, volleys, a bit of everything. Very relieved to win in the end against a tough opponent!!" -- Marcos

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "A great match played in a nice weather. We both struggled to maintain consistency. I won the first three points then he rallied to win the next five points then I recovered to win the set at 7 5. We had so many ridiculously good and long rallies. I remembered at one point we had 16 deuces but eventually he won that game. I am totally exhausted and gasping for breath in between points. I tried to make every rally a short as possible as I am not keen on having a third set. At 4-4 (second set), I tried to be more aggressive and managed to break his serve and eventually closed the match on my serve. Really great match. We decided to play again after this round." -- Lito
Reveal CommentRorie Evans bt Nick Johnson (Jul 5) 7-5, 6-1

PLAYER COMMENTS:

  • "Nick and I had a great match during a glorious evening. We traded breaks of serve in the first set until I just managed to hold my serve for 7-5. Nick's serve was a bit less reliable in the second set. This gave me some opportunities but we had some fantastic rallies which were not reflected in the scoreline. A most enjoyable match against the politest of opponents! " -- Rorie

Great game which have everything including sweat, drop shots, a dog and a squirrel. Offered a re-match sometime but right now I hurt like hell! Cheers Rorie and good luck for the rest of the tournament. Bye for now, E " -- Edward

By 8:30pm we started the third set, and when we were 3-3 we decided to do a tie break since we had less than 10 minutes on our court booking. Since we had no time neither lights on court to finish the match. I got the tie break but as we know, either of us could have got it. Great play and really enjoyed the rallies." -- Aitor

Rather than taking the forfeit, Aitor very graciously agreed to reschedule our match to tonight. Just over 2 hours later, I was able to stumble past the finish line in the increasing gloom. The match was characterised by long rallies with great shotmaking prowess by Aitor, getting the angles on both the forehand and backhand sides. I was able to hang in the match and rallies long enough to squeeze out the win. Thank you to Aitor for his fantastic sportsmanship and it is a pity that someone had to win. " -- Viv
