Collapse AllKennington and Brockwell Parks Singles - Round 41 | Thursday 20 July 2017 to Wednesday 13 September 2017 (Midpoint: Wednesday 16 August 2017)

Over 200 matches played once again in one of our biggest leagues which made for a good summer round with strong competition throughout. Congratulations to the new group champions and we hope to see you all next time.

Group Summary:

David showed the experience of a former champ, playing all of his available matches and bagging bonus points to leave nothing to chance. This positive attitude paid off for David as he chalked up four hard fought wins and a point from an "epic two and a half" defeat to Christopher to top the podium for the second round in a row. Jamie held his nerve to pip Tom to the silver thanks to a nail-biting victory in their excellent head to head.

Player Comments:

  • "A fiercely competitive match that really could have gone either way. Simon edged a tight first set and managed to pull ahead at 4-1 in the second. However this is where Tim becomes dangerous. Tim then started to dictate the points using the full width of the court pulling me from side to side. He then led 5-4 with some very clever play which left me floundering. Inevitably it was a tiebreak that settled the 2nd set and after double faulting on the first point I knew I had to get the first strike in and try to dominate. Luckily I did and managed to win the match in 2 tight sets. An amazing contest!"  -- Simon
Timothy Jones bt Christopher Bunstead (Sep 4) Walkover
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Christopher Bunstead (Sep 3) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A very competitive match played on a blustery day kim Kennington. Chris stormed to a set and 3-1 lead firing winners all over the court with very few unforced errors. I managed to up the pace with more aggression and draw level. In the end consistency saw me through in the final set. I always enjoy playing Chris and look forward to the next match. "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt David Jovic (Sep 2) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another great encounter against David; really good tennis played throughout. There were a clutch of break points for both of us in the first set, with lots of deuce games. The second set was the best the two of us have played together. It was incredibly hard fought, and if David hadn't kindly gone to get us both more water at 4-5, I'm sure the momentum would have carried into a third set."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Simon Wood (Sep 1) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A fortuitous second serve ace summed up the match as everything seemed to go my way today! I'm sure when we play next our usual close matches will resume. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentJamie Feldman bt Timothy Jones (Aug 29) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I really enjoy my games against Tim, who must be one of the most consistent hitters of the ball I’ve ever come across. It was an excellent game, especially the second set which didnt have a break until the penultimate game. A couple games in particular had 10+ deuces. A pleasure, as always, and I look forward to our next encounter. "  -- Jamie

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentChristopher Bunstead bt David Jovic (Aug 28) 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "Epic two and a half hour match in the blazing bank holiday Monday sun. Could have been over very quickly when David was up 2-0 in the 2nd set. I think if he'd got the third game I would have folded within 15 minutes as my head was basically gone. However, I managed to find some momentum to get the 2nd set. The third set started with David going 3-0 up and as you'd expect we were both completely out on our feet by then and it could have gone either way right to the end. "  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Max Schreder (Aug 25) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "I'm really not sure how this score ended up looking so one sided. Most games went to deuce and a number went to multiple deuces. Total playing time was almost an hour and a half! Looking forward to playing again soon when I'm sure the score will be a truer reflection of the closeness of the match. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Max Schreder (Aug 19) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A good competitive match overall. Max hit some beautiful backhand slice drop shots and large booming forehands which had me scampering all over the court. Consistency saw me through in the end. "  -- Simon
Jamie Feldman bt Max Schreder (Aug 18) Walkover
Reveal CommentJamie Feldman bt Tom Harvey (Aug 14) 1-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I always enjoy matches against Tom as it’s always a close game and topsy turvey affair. Tom stormed the first set, knocking me off my feet in double quick time. I got some rhythm into my game for the second set, and the third set was as close as it could be, on serve until the very final game. Excellent game, lots of fun and looking forward to the next one. "  -- Jamie
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Simon Wood (Aug 13) 7-6 (7-2), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Scorcher in Burgess Park. I am still quite unsure how to handle Simon's unorthodox game but was able to pull it off this time somehow although Simon had his share of winners. First set could have really gone either way and I'm just delighted it did not go to 3 which would have been a struggle following my previous day's battle with Tom."  -- David
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Tom Harvey (Aug 13) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really good quality match against Tom, who was in the middle of an ambitious three-days-three-matches schedule. Both sets were tight affairs, each of us taking it turns to put together runs of games as the momentum swung forwards and backwards between us. Even had time to squeeze in a third set afterwards, which was equally competitive. Looking forward to our next match!"  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Tom Harvey (Aug 12) 6-1, 3-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Quite an eventful math indeed, involving string breaks, a change of venues and a topsy turvy 3rd set which saw both of us alternate in full control before I was able to pull away in the decider. Needless to say our respective Sunday opponents won't be playing the freshest legs!"  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Jamie Feldman (Aug 7) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Barely escaped the rain on a muggy Monday on the Burgess slopes. Always a pleasure playing Jamie and happy to have prevailed despite a consitant barrage of forehand winners on his part. "  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Max Schreder (Aug 5) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Welcome back to the Kennington league for Max, a bunch of good rallies out there despite what comes across as a lopsided score. "  -- David
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Jamie Feldman (Aug 1) 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable (to-be-finished) game against Simon. I edged into a 5-2 lead in the first set, but Simon suddenly broke into Sampras-esqe groundstrokes, knocking me off my feet, that I was unable to cope with and he deservedly won the first set. I tried to get on top of my game in the second and managed to get through that until the rain kicked in and we had to stop. To be continued on Tuesday at 9!"  -- Jamie

Group Summary:

Marcos, perhaps inspired by his near miss with top spot in the last round, produced a gutsy display of tennis to prevail from several close contests to finish with five wins and bonus points under his belt to clinch the gold. James R came out a convincing winner from his match with Marcos, so what might have happened had he played a few more matches? Nick is rewarded for his efforts in numerous tight tussles with the silver.

Look forward to our next game for sure!"  -- Marcos

After extra advertising from the sponsors all over the Underground network, TV adverts, and even Timeout magazine, all of London Town flocked to this little corner of the metropolis to see this most intriguing and fascinating showdown that oozed quality like caramel flows from a Mars bar - tasty. Court 1 - The show court was the obvious choice for such a thrilling climax to the working week. Paul's play had the crowd transfixed as his groundstrokes are so accurate and precise that he makes Swiss timing look rather slap-dash, as if it were a bit of a stab in the dark! Adding this to his phenomenal propensity to smash winners for fun resulted in him becoming an immediate crowd favourite."  -- Edward

The result was 90 minutes of thrilling high octane tennising that had the stadium, bursting to capacity with adoring fans, chanting, cheering and chiming their adulation for the spectacle on show. The weather was set fair, the breeze had dropped and the show began. What followed was one of the closest contests since the 1923-24 football league season where we all know Huddersfield were victorious over Cardiff due to goal average (whatever that means). The (slightly dodgy) Larkhall park floodlights reluctantly flickered on, initiating and illuminating an impressive fightback. Nick's powerful forehand and precise volleying saved three match points over the next two games, bringing the score level at 5-5. Nick was on fire, Ed was rattled. Long rallies and tense moments defined the next two games, with Ed just managing to halt Nick's momentum and edge over the line, narrowly winning the set 7-5. An enjoyable match- thanks!"  -- Edward

Mark breezed through the first set 6-1, with me struggling for rhythm and ideas. In the second, Mark was still making me run around the court with great variety and accuracy. However, I began to play a bit more tennis, attacking Mark's serve when the chance came. It finished 6-4 but could have gone either way. In the third, young legs began to tell. Whereas in the first I had been making the unforced errors, now this switched around. It finished 6-3 but it felt close throughout."  -- Adam

I felt confident in the second set, and quite ruthlessly targeted Frank's backhand. Lots of long rallies where I managed to move Frank and take the initiative at the net. He wins shot of the match though with a scorching forehand pass down the line. I'm told it's his favourite shot. Anyway the real reason I managed to win is that Frank forgot to bring his shorts and played the match is trousers! I wonder if she is Andy Murray's sister: she hit a winner every single time she was heavily on the back foot. The first set was close, with robust rallying from the baseline, where I managed to break mid-set and hold for the remainder. In the second Laura rightly tore me apart. I served more double faults than I can count and showcased some truly awful net play. Credit to Laura, who maintained her consistency and hit sublime lobs on many occasions. By the third set we started to tire and minds drifted to what was for dinner. I scraped by pushing shots and was very possibly helped by our inability to remember the score mid-set. • "Having lost to Chris in a previous LTL round, I was keen for revenge. This time we clashed in windy conditions on the grass courts used for the Wimbledon qualifiers, with similarly robust baseline exchanges to last time. I raced to a 4-0 lead and a double break in the first set, though Chris went on to win the next 3 games by exploiting weak serving on my part. I managed to hold serve and steal a final break to close the set. The second set was tight. We both failed to consolidate some early breaks of serve, and I was down multiple break points when serving at 4-4. Fortunately I held on, and with luck managed to take the match through a couple shots of the frame being helped by the wind and divine intervention. A very enjoyable match again

A few deuces didn't go my way and very soon I was playing catch up. The second set was similar to the first - I started strong, but John soon picked up the pace, eventually winning the match. Player Comments:

  • "A balmy late summer evening in Kennington Park was the backdrop to this midway point clash. With both players having two games under their belts there was four points up for grabs. The result. A physical match with lots of ground covered, closely contested points and hard fought deuce points. On the night the baseline's favour went my way, great game," -- Jack

Group Summary:

A round of applause to Joel who picked up a trio of convincing wins to cross the finishing line in first place. Jamie was right on Joel's tail with a couple of hard fought victories and a draw to his name he was only one point further back. A special mention to Kudus who was the only player to perfect their scheduling skills.

Group Summary:

A quieter group than we perhaps would have liked but nevertheless there is a champion to be crowned. James and Courtney finish level on six points apiece but crucially James recorded a victory over Courtney and this earns him the prize. Credit to Lauren for pushing James all the way in their tight tussle of a head to head.
