Player Comments:

  • "Expectations were high for the rematch of division 2´s thriller last round.... some big serves with new balls on the sandy surface made for two easy holds one game a piece. Then it just turned out not to be Joe´s day with the errors creeping in and 50/50s all going James´s way. Some good rallies and as always some big shots on both sides."  -- James
Reveal CommentKibbs Osafo bt Raf O'Reilly (May 17) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I must admit to having been both slightly intimidated and excited when I saw that Kibbs had a 13 something WTN (think it has been revised upwards a bit now). As to the game, it was close at first at 2-2, and then I had a break point for 3-3 which i didn't take. This was a fun match in hot, sunny conidtions, featuring some great rallies, but ultimately Kibbs had too much - super technique with some fantastic volleying, and great consistency throughout. Plus I didn't seem to be able to take my chances often enough when they presented (overhitting etc). Kibbs is a real tactician capable of adjusting his game quickly to see off challenges. Playing players like Kibbs is a privilege and why I want to be league 1! Hopefully I can hang in there!"  -- Raf

Player Comments:

  • "Having played David at least three times before and never won, I went into this match thinking that a point would be a decent result. Was surprised the way it played out, but David hasn't played in a while, so I was probably more match fit for this one and my consistency perhaps won through. I guess I was lucky to play David when he was maybe a little rusty and on another day this probably goes the way of past matches. In any event, I look forward to the next time we meet. I still have a lot of work to do if I am to catch up in our head to heads."  -- Raf

Reveal CommentRaf O'Reilly bt Joseph Bell (Apr 22) 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), [10-8]

Player Comments:

  • "A really fun and enjoyable match with Joe, played in a great and fair spirit. The first set was tight. In fact the whole match was tight with mutliple deuces on most games. Set 2 seemed to be going my way, with my consistency just trumping Joe's combination of incredible winners and unforced errors, until Joe came storming back to take the set into a tie-break, which he won at a canter. Things were not lookling good for me, given that I had now lost around 7 tie-breaks in a row...but somehow I found myself on the cusp of victory at 9-6! Joe brought it straight back to 9-8, with two incredible points, but an unforced error in the next point allowed me to limp over the line. On another day Joe wins easily, but i'll take it."  -- Raf
Reveal CommentCarsten Hovestadt bt Raf O'Reilly (Apr 20) 6-2, 3-6, [12-10]

Player Comments:

  • "What a match! The first set went quite quickly, with Carsten hammering down serves, including second serve aces, and me quite frankly glad to grab a couple of games and avoid a bagel. The signs looked ominous, but the second set went quite differently, with Carsten making more unforced errors on serve and volley, while my serve returns and retrievals improved considerably. I had 40-0 at 5-2 up, which Carsten recovered to win the game from...but thankfully I won the next game to go into a tie break. It was tight...6-6 at one stage and then I had two match points, including one at 10-9, which Carsten saved with a tough, brave overhead backhand volley! Playing Carsten is always a challenge and a pleasure and this match was no different."  -- Raf

In the second my movement and forehand improved and I managed to get the win. Best shot of the day was John's: a sliced backhand drop shot with plenty of sidespin, straight out of the Benoit Paire playbook. "  -- Paul

Reveal CommentPaul Rubinstein bt Luca Spinazze' (Apr 18) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Classic league match with some big, aggressive hitting in the beginning of the match and a gradual slowing down of the pace from thereon. By the end of the 2nd set we both played tentatively and kept finding ourselves in etxended cross-court rallies - my leftie forehand to Luca's sliced backhand - that often finished with an unforced error... As usual, Luca played some great stretch volleys and lovely forehands down the line and after struggling on my backhand throughout the match I finally hit a few crosscourt winners in the last couple of games. Great battle in beautiful spring weather!"  -- Paul

Player Comments:

  • "Was a great start to the work week to get out and about. One of the earliest slots attempted with a 6:30am start but well worth it. Was very close all the way, many deuce games and there were plenty of moments where it could easily have gone the other way. Thanks for a great early morning match and hope we can inspire some others to join us for some early morning matches."  -- Michael
