Every player who completes three matches by the midway point of any round is sent a FREE can of tennis balls! Plus there are great offers all the time in our shop.

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Thanks for tennis balls and certificate- I enjoyed participating in the league competition and meeting new like-minded tennis players who enjoy the game. Delighted with all and will get the certificate framed. Will certainly play in league again next year. Thanks again,"

Susan Dunn

"The round was great. I won  all my matches which obviously is a real thrill. However at the same time. I was pushed and were all good, difficult opponents. It's good to play real, competitive matches with incentives to win and do well, while at the same time, not worrying too much about the results and just enjoying the experience without having to feel too much pressure or anything. All my opponents were extremely friendly, nice guys who I'd like to now call friends, and that's one of the main reasons I started to play more competitive tennis in the first place, to socialise and meet new people.  It's a real delight to win this great league, as I didn't believe I could ever win any tennis competition of any kind. I really can't wait to receive my certificate as I will be pinning it up on my wall. I will be entering again sometime. Many thanks"

Dominik Saddington

"After 30 years of barely picking a tennis racket up, I'm enjoying playing again after starting in March. The league offers the opportunity to play against a variety of styles. It can sometimes be difficult to arrange league matches, particularly when the weather is so unpredictable. However, since playing my first league match v Matt Davis, in March we have played about a dozen friendlies,, so the league also offers the opportunity to meet others with whom matches can be arranged, not only between rounds, but also during rounds when league matches can't be arranged,"

Rajeev Dhirani

"Always good games and appreciate the website.",

It was great to see friendly, competitive tennis return to the courts of Newcastle after a long coronavirus enforced absence, and you all quickly got into the swing of things with lots of matches played and bonus points earned. In fact you completed just under two thirds of all possible matches so no signs of rustiness at all... great work!

Group Summary:

It was a successful return to league action for Imran and John taking the top 2 spots in Group 1, with Imran's 6 wins including a close second set tiebreak against James which Imran sealed with an ace. Runner up John won a "long and tough match" against Kishan across 3 sets and featuring "some lung bursting rallies" and both players "running down shots on crucial points"... great tennis!

Player Comments:

  • "Poor conditions didnt help and joe definitely off form. I had a few good serves and winners and managed to save quite a few break points which gave the score an emphatic look. Look forward to playing again in better conditions! "  -- Michael
Reveal CommentJoe Charlton bt Joseph Barton (Oct 25) 2-6, 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "We started this match a couple of weeks ago and had to stop at 2-2 in the third set when it got too dark. We finally resumed today, and managed to wrap it up. In all of my previous unsuccessful matches with Joey (six, seven?) his speed around the court and consistency were too much to overcome, with me going to the net too often and getting passed and lobbed for my trouble. In recent times I've improved my backhand a lot, and being more consistent from the baseline I tried not to fall into the old pattern of play, and it seems to have paid off. We've had great matches for years now so I look forward to the next encounter!"  -- Joe
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Kishan Patel (Oct 10) 6-3, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A long and tough match. I took the first set and was well ahead in the second only for Kishan to fight back with accurate play, especially on the forehand, hitting the corners and baseline consistently without error, to take the set. In the third set, Kishan continued his high standard and using his speed around the court, broke to lead 3-2 and again at 4-3. Some lung bursting rallies with both players running down shots on crucial points meant the score remained close, but I managed to come back and take the set 6-4, with some attacking play and an important service hold at 4-4 being key. A very good match between 2 players with contrasting styles, played in good spirits." -- John
Reveal CommentKishan Patel bt Joseph Barton (Oct 2) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Joseph and I had to wait about 40 minutes to get a court! Luckily we were able to play a match and finish before the sun set. The first set was full of long, hard fought rallies in which both of us were running around like mad men. I was able to execute my plans a bit better in the second set, that combined with several off the net shots meant I was able to win the match. Looking forward to the next one."  -- Kishan
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt John Waites (Sep 24) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "High level and entertaining match tonight with John. I hit the ground running and despite John serving very well I managed a break in the 3rd and wasn’t giving away many cheap points - then came some serving difficulties but I managed to dig myself out of the hole and went on to hold and break again in the 8th game to take the set. John really upped his game in the 2nd set and we had some momentum shifts and plenty of service breaks. My serving let me down but I was still playing solid tennis in the point and in the end it came down to John making more mistakes in the rally. Glad to get out of this match in 2 sets as it was the most difficult match this round."  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Richard Thomson (Sep 22) 6-1, 6-1

  • "Some good rallies on a sunny day at Ex Park."  -- John
Joseph Barton bt Richard Thomson (Sep 21) 6-0, 6-1
Reveal CommentKishan Patel bt Richard Thomson (Sep 17) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Richard and I played on a lovely late summer’s evening, the sun was out and there was just the slightest breeze. I managed to take the first set quickly but I was fortunate to do so with a few deuces in the set! Richard led 2-1 in the second set, taking his level up from the first set, before I managed to edge ahead and then stay ahead to take the match. Looking forward to playing again, hopefully with similar weather!"  -- Kishan
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Richard Thomson (Sep 13) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Tough day at the office today as the wind made serving ‘properly’ incredibly difficult. I managed to do well in return games today and I think that helped take the pressure off me in the 1st set. Once we got into a point we had some good rallies, but I think there were a lot of short points today. In the 2nd set we struggled more on serve and after consecutive breaks until I finally held on for a 5-3 lead which lead to a difficult win. Best of luck in your next matches, Richard!!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJoe Charlton bt Michael Burke (Sep 11) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great match. Michael served well in the first set, scoring several aces I had no hope of reaching, and winning more points when all I could manage was weak returns. The second game had too many deuces to count, but remember there were more than 12, and he eventually took it. Inconsistency on Michael's part let me take the first set, but he reigned it in for the second and made a big comeback to level the score. Going into the third I was alarmed at the time, since I needed to be at work in the afternoon, so decided to play much more aggressively. It was a gamble but it paid off. I played my absolute best all match and took a close match, I have no doubt if I revert to normal next time I won't be so lucky."  -- Joe
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Michael Burke (Sep 8) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Nice warm conditions today with cloud cover - almost ideal but it was a bit windy at times. Michael and I had a few good rallies and there were a few very close games where I just managed to keep him uncomfortable enough to force a mistake or get on top of the point. Best of luck for your next few matches!!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Joseph Barton (Sep 6) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Despite challenging wet conditions, both players enjoyed this match, playing many rallies and good shots despite the weather."  -- John

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentKishan Patel bt Michael Burke (Sep 3) 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was some match between Michael and I, it was a year wait for the rematch which lived up to its billing! The first set was a war of attrition with many long rallies, 6 consecutive breaks of serve to take it to a tie break in which Michael held his nerve to win. Michael seemed to run out of steam in the second set after a very intense first set. He then took an early break of serve in the first before I broke back to make it 2-2. I then managed to edge ahead, and stay in front to snatch a hard fought win. Looking forward to the next one already."  -- Kishan
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Joe Charlton (Aug 31) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely day to be outside today. Joe and I have played a couple of times before so when he served and volleyed on the first point it all came flooding back to me. We had some decent rallies and Joe did well at the net - picking up some tough volleys from below net height that I had no chance to run down. In both sets we produced a few double faults and it’s fair to say I benefitted the most. Faults aside I think most points ended with good play by either one of us so I enjoyed the match! Well played Joe and best of luck for the rest of your matches!!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Michael Burke (Aug 31) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match despite the scoreline with some good rallies. "  -- John
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Kishan Patel (Aug 25) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Fun match tonight. In the 1st set I got off to a fast start - serving big and getting into return games. Serving at 4-1 was the pivotal moment, as with about 7 deuces and lots of game/break points I managed to get out of jail with some good serving and knicked the last game of the set. The 2nd set loss of focus crept in as Kishan started well and broke my serve as I let a few more double faults occur. I managed to break back as Kishan served at 2-1 and was still doing well in the points - so despite a lot of good rallies I got to 2-5, 0-40 with Kishan serving to stay in the match. He did really well and reeled off 5 points in a row before I put in a good final service game. Thanks for a good hit Kishan."  -- Imran
Reveal CommentKishan Patel bt Joe Charlton (Aug 20) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The first couple of games were deuces which I narrowly edged out before going on to win the first set. Joe came out well in the second set and took an early lead before I recovered to get the scoreline to 3-3, I then won the last few, tight, service games. This was a good match with Joe and best of luck for the rest of your matches."  -- Kishan
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt James Lethaby (Aug 17) 6-1, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match today with after a weekend where we both overdid it a bit! The 1st set had some good hitting with lots of winners. I think my serve gave James a few problems and I was hitting well once the point started so it got away from him quickly. In the 2nd it started where we left off, but James dug out his first service game from 0-30 thanks to some good serving and then broke my serve for the first time. I think I then took the next 3 games and it seemed like we were both feeling the effects of the humid indoor conditions as the quality dipped a little as we traded breaks of serve. It was a good tiebreak with both of us going for it and I sealed it with another ace after some sporadic serving in the 2nd. Good match, James!!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Joe Charlton (Aug 16) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Joe started well, coming to the net whenever he could and continued to fight hard throughout the second set."  -- John

Group Summary:

It was a 2 horse race in Group 2 with Richard and Chris pushing each other all the way! Both won 6 matches and earned midway bonus points to finish on 14 points apiece, so who would come first? Richard "had to dig in" but managed to win in straight sets to secure the title, while his closest match was against Matthew where he managed to narrowly avoid a third set.

  • "A nice evening to play. The match started with a tight battle, with Jonathan forcing me into a number of errors. Another occasion facing difficult shots from my opponent, Jonathan broke me in the opening game of each set. The varied rallies continued through the sets but on the whole I managed to play as consistently as hoped for."  -- Chris

Player Comments:

  • "Weather-wise, gusts of wind continued to be an obstacle for yet another match, but I was fortunate enough to be playing well today, with very little going awry. Matthew is a good player with strong shots at his disposable making for enjoyable rallies, and on another day it could have been a very different scoreline."  -- Chris

Player Comments:

  • "Always good to play Peter; the rallies were fun and free-flowing, with just one double fault in the match (courtesy of me). Peter took the opening game and I was fortunate enough to claim the rest. The scoreline was flattering for me as I faced a good number of break points along the way, but I managed to work my way out of trouble."  -- Chris

Reveal CommentChris Quince bt Neil Wallace (Sep 4) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A very similar encounter to my last match, but with the added challenge of nuisance weather. Neil sent many tough shots my way creating long rallies, but I managed to start with a 2-0 lead, and consolidate it for 4-1. Neil started the second set proactively, rapidly going ahead 2-0, but I had a consistent run to turn it back to 5-2, and a couple of games later managed to seal the win. Another enjoyable match, awkward weather aside!"  -- Chris
Reveal CommentChris Quince bt Mark Watson (Aug 30) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was a tricky match with a fair few cagey points played. I found it difficult to deal with Mark’s shots and he quickly lead 2-0, a break he reclaimed for 3-2. The difficulties I had were reflected in the fact Mark held game point in most of the games played, but I managed to play largely error-free where it mattered to claw my way back. Many breaks ensued in the second set but a 4-1 lead was just enough breathing space for me to reach the end. It was a fun match with good rallies along the way."  -- Chris
