Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"The round was great. I won  all my matches which obviously is a real thrill. However at the same time. I was pushed and were all good, difficult opponents. It's good to play real, competitive matches with incentives to win and do well, while at the same time, not worrying too much about the results and just enjoying the experience without having to feel too much pressure or anything. All my opponents were extremely friendly, nice guys who I'd like to now call friends, and that's one of the main reasons I started to play more competitive tennis in the first place, to socialise and meet new people.  It's a real delight to win this great league, as I didn't believe I could ever win any tennis competition of any kind. I really can't wait to receive my certificate as I will be pinning it up on my wall. I will be entering again sometime. Many thanks"

Dominik Saddington

"Thanks for tennis balls and certificate- I enjoyed participating in the league competition and meeting new like-minded tennis players who enjoy the game. Delighted with all and will get the certificate framed. Will certainly play in league again next year. Thanks again,"

Susan Dunn

"Brilliant commentary, very entertaining.  Well done guys for putting it together. I've had a good time and met some nice people,"

"I had a great time playing and made some good tennis friends from the league, so thank you for that!"

"After 30 years of barely picking a tennis racket up, I'm enjoying playing again after starting in March. The league offers the opportunity to play against a variety of styles. It can sometimes be difficult to arrange league matches, particularly when the weather is so unpredictable. However, since playing my first league match v Matt Davis, in March we have played about a dozen friendlies,, so the league also offers the opportunity to meet others with whom matches can be arranged, not only between rounds, but also during rounds when league matches can't be arranged,"

Player Comments:

  • "Some good rallies interspersed with errors from both players. From 3-3 I started playing better, taking the next 7 games. Joey fought back in the second set but I managed to take it at 6-3 again."  -- John

Reveal CommentJoe Charlton bt Joe Neatrour (Apr 8) 7-5, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Good match, several changes in momentum and difficult for me because I couldn't find a significant weakness in Joe's game I could take advantage of. No doubt a match which will be replayed very soon!"  -- Joe
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Simon Barnes (Mar 30) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "First set could have gone either way. Simon served strongly, hitting some aces and for much of the set, his accurate groundstrokes forced too many half court balls, which meant alot of defensive work and court coverage for me. I hit a couple of well placed lobs on important points later on and although Simon saved a set point at 5-4 and then level for 5-5, I managed to take a tight set 7-5. Simon started the second set better than me but I managed to start hitting better length consistently and as the breeze strengthened, make fewer mistakes in the conditions, so the momentum and the set swung my way. A competitive and enjoyable game."  -- John
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Matthew Davis (Mar 30) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "We had intended to play at exhibition but all courts were filled by the time we got there, so we relocated to leazes where the only racket sport taking place was badminton. First set went with serve until I was able to get the break at 4-3 and then serve out. Second serve was the complete opposite with whomever was able to hold a service game coming out as the winner, and luckily that was me."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentMatthew Davis bt Simon Barnes (Mar 24) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A good game with Simon in difficult windy conditions. I think over the course of the match I handled the conditions better which was the main difference today. Both sets had some competitive rallies which was good to see as the wind did it’s best to make these kind of rallies less frequent! Overall a good match and and look forward to the next one! "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt John Waites (Mar 20) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A decent game where the score doesn't really tell the story. There was a lot of tennis played & a really tight game of multiple deuces at 2-0. Despite struggling with my 1st serve, my 2nd serve held up & I won a lot of the key points, consistently hitting the lines to take the 1st set. John warmed up in the 2nd, serving better and hitting harder putting away a couple of my bigger 1st serves. I covered the court well today, my movement catching John out on occasion. There was a tight game at 4-2 which could've gone either way but with my stamina rapidly diminishing, I managed to get over the line. Good game John, cheers! "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Joseph Barton (Mar 11) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Double duty today due to a busy work schedule & Joe probaly caught me on a bad day for him when I had already had a game to warm up, starting the match hitting well from the outset. 1st set saw some really good rallies with Joe's relentless running meaning that I always had to play one more shot with him chasing everything down. I managed to ensure that I took all the key points and take the first set to love despite there being a fair bit of tennis played. 2nd set saw a dip & Joe maybe begin to struggle little bit and I think we both both agreed that he lost the last game of the match rather than me winning it. It's always a decent game with Joe and I would say he deserved more from the first set but it wasn't his day. Cheers "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Joe Neatrour (Mar 11) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A good hit with Joe in sunny conditions. Joe ran everything down and covered the court incredibly well, meaning that it was a decent workout for both of us. I played well in the first set to round it off to love, before starting the second set just as well. Joe hit back to take a game in the second set and I managed to serve it out to win a match played in good spirit and with some good rallies. Cheers Joe, good luck for the rest of your games!"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Stuart Mcgowan (Mar 10) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very wet conditions but a decent game nonetheless at Beverley Park. Early doors, it was a cagey affair, in my 1st service game Stu went 0-40 up but I manged to dig in and hold it.... just. Stu's 2nd service game went to multiple deuces with us both missing chances before I got the break. I managed to stay in front for the rest of the set and close it out 6-2. I then raced into a 5-0 lead in the 2nd set, hitting well on the backhand side and managing to edge most of the key points. Stu played really well to break my serve but I then managed to break back to finish it off. Always a decent game with Stu but I managed to play the better of the two of us on the day, Cheers Stuart!"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Joe Charlton (Mar 3) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "My second Joe derby in 2 days. Joe C and I have had plenty of close matches previously and so it was no surprise that the first set was tight again. Joe C adapted best early on to the very windy conditions of Storm Freya and therefore took a 3-1 lead. I fought back however by finding more consistency in my ground strokes to take a 5-4 lead. The key spell of the match came in the 10th game of the first set as I served for the set but was 0-30 down. Fortunately for me I managed to produce a couple of decent serves and keep my nerve in some long rallies to win the next 4 points and the set. I definitely grew in confidence in the second set and dealt better with Joe C’s net play to win it 6-0. "  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Joe Neatrour (Mar 2) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The good weather has definitely inspired people to play more tennis this winter as we got the last available court at Exhibition Park. In a Joe derby (a common feature of this league) it was Joe without the y who came out the blocks fastest taking the opening game. However I got into my stride after that and found some good rhythm even mustering the power to serve a rare ace and win 6-1 6-0. An enjoyable match with some good rallies with a common theme being Joe’s lobs battling against my volleys"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Matthew Davis (Mar 1) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Good game with Matt on a slightly gloomy, late afternoon as the light started to fade. Both served well early on & the first few games were held before I got the break. Once I got in front I managed to see a close set out. 2nd set started with an epic 1st service game for Matt with multiple deuces & lasting at least 10 mins. I managed to edge it & then served well to stay in front all the way putting more pressure on Matt's serve. I got through the match without any double faults which always makes a big difference, even managing to hit a couple of big winners near the end to finish it off. We then played out a couple of friendly tie-breaks, the last of which finished 10-8, which was a much better reflection of the game overall!"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Joe Charlton (Feb 28) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A foggy day today and all that moisture in the air slowed down the balls enough that I was able to run round my backhand all match and take the ball on my stronger side. A couple of fortunate net chords on game winning points for me have inflated the score somewhat, always a fun contest with Joe."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Joe Charlton (Feb 27) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Always a good game with Joe and today was no exception at Richardson Dees. A nice sunny day meant that at one end the sun was in your eyes which possibly inhibited Joe's game of charging the net a little bit. Overall, it was a decent hit in lovely weather. My serve was reasonably consistent and a couple of decent service games from me and the odd double fault here & there from Joe meant that I managed to keep my nose in front all the way. There were a few decent rallies and overall most points were competitive, but I played well enough to ensure that I had the edge. Good luck for the rest of your games Joe!"  -- Paul

Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Joseph Barton (Feb 24) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "As the sun burned through the fog this Sunday morning the scene at exhibition park was courts filled with active Newcastle league members locking horns; the local tennis league lot will be very chuffed. My first game back after a winter lay off where I've been testing my badminton skills and always a fun contest against Joey. First set went well for me with my service bordering on reliable, which was most surprising. Second set was a different story as I lost my tennis legs and tired. Joey broke me to level at 1-1, I broke back but at 2-1 there was definitely a moment in my service game where if Joey had levelled again then the second set could have gone very differently."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentMatthew Davis bt Joe Charlton (Feb 23) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Always a good hit with Joe. Weather was perfect for tennis, particularly warm for a Saturday morning in February! First set was close until I managed to break away at the back end of the set. Second set was a bit more one sided. I managed to hit some good passing shots and lobs today which was pleasing as it can often be a bit of ‘cat and mouse’ game with Joe with him charging the net and me trying to figure out a way past him! Overall good game with some good rallies. Look forward to the next time! "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Simon Barnes (Feb 21) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great playing Paul at Beverley Park's tennis club on a sunny, dry day. Bit blustery but it was the same for both of us. I lost the opening game on my serve, which is never a great sign; Paul cantered to 6-4 and I barely troubled him. Around 4-3 I brought him to deuce on his serve (not sure how) but Paul stepped up a gear and fizzed some firsts passed me to dampen any hope of drawing level. The second set was all downhill - I didn't have the weapons or consistency to trouble Paul's game; Paul was generous with a few calls on my shots and the entire match was played in a good spirit. Paul's serve, movement and consistency is a class above mine. I blame this tonking on a mystery virus/ my string tension/my coach/the media/other "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Joe Charlton (Feb 19) 6-1, 6-3

Reveal CommentSimon Barnes bt Joe Neatrour (Feb 17) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was a pleasure to meet Joe. We had a great match played in good spirit on a bright, windy day at Exhibition Park. The opening set was over quickly after a sticky first game in which Joe held me at deuce. However, Joe played much more strongly in the second set and was responsible for the match's most memorable shots: a slam dunk, Pete Sampras style smashed winner; a perfectly judged lob under pressure that left me floundering, and an inside out forehand that I could only stand and admire. Joe was chasing everything down and the momentum was shifting his way at the end. However, I managed to hold serve and Joe eventually succumbed. Great chatting to Joe; no better way to start your Sunday."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Matthew Davis (Feb 16) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Strong wind made conditions tricky. Matt got a high percentage of first serves in, ran down alot of balls and hit a number of accurate lobs so here were plenty of long competitive rallies, especially in the second set."  -- John

Group Summary:

It was as close as it comes at the top of group two, as Chris and Aitor finished with the same win/loss record and bonus points to tie in the standings. There was little to choose between the two on court either, with their match a "rollercoaster" where Chris just sneaked the victory in a third set tiebreak to claim the prize - well played both. Hats off to Jonathan for coming from match point down to defeat the new champ in "topsy turvy epic".

Jonathan came back to a 3-2 but a new good run for Aitor made him taking the first set 6-2. The second set started with Jonathan playing more aggressively breaking twice for a 4-0. The rollercoaster continued with Aitor coming back putting a 4-4, serving dramatically to get ahead 5-4 after 3 deuces and finally breaking Jonathan's serve to get the match with a final 6-4."  -- Aitor

Peter went 2-0 up in the first set before I was able to take a few of the key points to clinch the first set 6-3. The second set started with me going 3-0 up before Peter rallied to bring it back to 4-3, before I eventually took a very long and key game to go 5-3 ahead, before seeing it out 6-4. My serve was more consistent than it has been recently and it needed to be as Peter pushed me all the way and made me work very hard for the win."  -- Chris
Reveal CommentAitor Lopez De Uralde bt Nicholas Rowe (Mar 9) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nice match played in horrible weather conditions. The day was wet and massively windy, so it was more adaption to bad conditions rather than proper tennis. Sadly for Nick, I could adapt better playing more conservative tennis than my usual style and I was able to put more balls in using the blowing wind. Anyway we could play some good rallies and the match was enjoyable."  -- Aitor
Reveal CommentJonathan Greener bt Chris Quince (Mar 9) 3-6, 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A match which ebbed and flowed along with the gale force freezing conditions. Chris deservedly took the first set with impressive consistency. I squared things up with the 2nd set, playing some decent tennis and quickly found myself 2-0 up in the decider. Form then fell off a cliff and before I knew it Chris surged into a 5-3 lead holding 2 match points. Somehow managed to win that game saving 4 match points including 1 shot hitting the net cord and landing on the line. With the wind worsening the last 3 games were a lottery but I managed to grind out a win. A topsy turvy epic. "  -- Jonathan

  • "An enjoyable match, with good rallies in decent conditions. The second set was tighter than the first with Chris S quickly going ahead 1-0, 30-0 before I managed to get back involved. Chris S took the lead in a number of games and won a long multi-deuce fifth game to get it on serve but fortunately I played enough of the key points well to claim the win."  -- Chris
Reveal CommentAitor Lopez De Uralde bt Chris Stanworth (Feb 27) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Good match played on another surprisingly warm and sunny February day. That made that all 5 courts in Exhibition Park were busy and we had to wait 20+ min to be able to start our match (first time I had to wait to play in winter time). The final result does not reflect the reality of the match. Several games went to deuce but I was lucky enough to take most of them. Consistency was the key and made me to take most of the important points. It was great fun to play with Chris, good luck in future matches"  -- Aitor
Reveal CommentAitor Lopez De Uralde bt Peter McCue (Feb 26) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good match played in a beautiful, sunny and warm day in February (global warming is a fact, sorry Donald Trump). Peter played well, defending when I attacked and making me run all across the court with good drop shots. My lately loss of weight and fitness improvement paid, making me to reach most of Peter's tricky shots. Good rallies and overall a good match"  -- Aitor

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentChris Quince bt Aitor Lopez De Uralde (Feb 24) 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-0)

Player Comments:

  • "Good competitive match played in a foggy but warm day. Chris displayed his typical competitive tennis style and controlled the first set after being more consistent. The second set was controlled by Aitor, showing a more aggressive and precise tennis. The third set was a roller-coaster, Chris was ahead 2-0, followed by Aitor leading 4-2 and serving, later seeing Chris serving for the match at 6-5 to lose his serve and leading to a final tie-break where Aitor melted down making too many errors. Good match overall and deserved victory for Chris "  -- Aitor
