Player Comments:

  • "A very nice and sunny day to play tennis at Armstrong Park. First time for me there and the courts are very good. Lee and I had a very good game. I managed to break Lee in the first set and made few errors. The second set was very close and the score does not reflect the intensity of the game. Lee served very well and had a very strong back hand, returning all my shots. A few unforced errors made the difference and we had very long rallies on his serve. Very enjoyable to play with Lee."  -- Christophe

Player Comments:

  • "A wonderfully sunny day in Armstrong park which with the fresh courts are great to play on. The match started strongly by both of us with Lee hitting some consistent shots and forcing me into a lot of errors, however I held firm and just (just being the correct word) took the first set. The second set was all Lee, everything was working for him, with a few long rallies and a couple of brilliant lobs and smashes for him to take a well deserved second set and the match to a third. This set did not play out as the score suggests, with some very tight games and a few going to deuce several times over. All the best for your remaining matches. Tip for everyone as well - bring a hat! "  -- Ryan

Player Comments:

  • "Very windy conditions probably didn’t help either of us tonight as we both struggled for the first 30 mins to just keep the ball in play. After that the first set was cagey with most games going to deuce and I stole the last game by returning more proactively. The second set started similarly but with more rallies as we both just tried to make serves - similarly to other matches I was returning well and finally found some rhythm on my forehand letting me take a few games in a row more comfortably after the battle to break for 3-2. I think we both played pretty well considering how windy it was but I’m glad it didn’t go to a 3rd!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentChris Murtagh bt Ryan Dray (May 8) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A beautiful at Armstrong Park. A fast paced match with Ryan hitting very flat and hard which kept rallies fairly short. A quick first set was followed by a much more competitive second. Ryan began to hit winners from all angles and clawed back 4-1 to 4-4. Only a couple of decent service games helped me limp over the line. Thanks for the game Ryan and good luck with the remaining."  -- Chris
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Christophe Dutertre (May 5) 2-6, 7-5, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "4 years after our last meeting in the league this was another tense and long 3 set match with Christophe. Christophe was by far the better player in the first set combining power with accuracy in his ground strokes to deservedly win the set 6-2. In the 2nd set it was more even as I was able to chase down more balls and lengthen the rallies, but Christophe still was well positioned for victory at 4-3 30-15 and the chance to hit a winner down the line. I was relieved to see the ball hit the net and that was a turning point as I managed to edge that 2nd set 7-5. I was lucky in the 3rd set that Christophe became tired as he recovered from illness, as without that I likely would have lost the match rather than winning the decider 6-0"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt James Gray (May 4) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We luckily booked an indoor court as the rain was very heavy just before our match. Very tricky match tonight with both of us playing pretty well. In the first set we started with quick points won against serve and until James served at 3-4 and I broke again it felt like it could go either way. In the 2nd I ran away with an early lead and despite my own service issues I managed to put James under lots of pressure on his games as I returned well and punished his 2nd serves. We had a lot of great rallies and James got a racket on lots of balls to make me play that extra shot - unluckily for him he caught me on a day where I didn’t make many mistakes and that made the difference."  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Chris Murtagh (May 3) 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "This may be the longest local tennis leagues match I’ve ever played, at almost 3 hours. Chris defended well and hit lovely drop shots to take the 1st set comfortably but I was more consistent in the 2nd set to convincingly level the match. The 3rd set was quite ridiculous - the last 9 games (from 2-1 to 6-6) ALL went to deuce and had a succession of lengthy and tiring rallies for both players as we struggled to hit as many winners with the older balls in damp, humid conditions. Chris had 4 match points (2 each at 5-3 and 5-4) and I was relieved to save them all and eventually force a tiebreak. I carried that momentum to take a 5-0 lead in the tiebreak and eventually claimed the win. Enjoyable evening on the lovely new Armstrong park courts"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Chris Murtagh (May 2) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Last-minute planning today and a late(ish) match for a BH Monday. A topsy turvy start saw very few long points until 3-3 when the quality went up a bit. I had a tough service game at 5-5 and after holding from 0-30 I managed to break and steal the set. I started the second well and got 3-0 up and then later 5-1, only for Chris to break my serve. We then had a battle in the last game and some really good points from both of us in the set overall - Glad to get across the line as Chris had started serving better and was hitting well. First time playing on Armstrong and the courts are brilliant!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Dan Hayman (May 1) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I think this was the 6th time Dan and I have played each other and as ever it was hard fought and fun to play. The 1st set was dominated by serve slightly surprisingly as this had not been a feature of our previous encounters. I got the only break of the set in the 4th game with me benefiting from a double fault from Dan to secure it. Conversely there were only 2 holds in the 2nd set and I was pleased to get them both and not get involved in another epic with Dan. I will have to make sure I play Dan on a grass court at some point so he gets a chance to have the benefits of home advantage! "  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentJames Gray bt Christophe Dutertre (Apr 30) 6-2, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A good match where everything seemed to be thrown at us. Wind swirling, sun at horrible heights and people standing right next to the court. I managed to get a good start and pulled through the first set, then at 3 0 up in the second Christoph put his hat on and suddenly he could see better and all his shots started coming off. After a battle for the final game of that set I was fortunate that Christoph's comeback had tired him out and I managed to get a quick lead in the third that I was able to push over the line."  -- James
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Dan Hayman (Apr 29) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "very good match today - first time meeting Dan and I think we both enjoyed it. In the first set i think we both served great but I'd say my serve made life difficult for Dan as it was harder to exploit 2nd serves for him today. A couple of deuce games went my way at the end of the set so 6-1 felt closer than it looks. I started the 2nd set well, winning the first 2 games but both of us struggled with the bright sun which made serving was less consistent for us and I think again me taking advantage of Dan's 2nd serve more often than he did mine made the difference. After a few breaks and good rallies I put a string of solid points together from 3-4 down and managed to get the win. Well played today Dan!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Ryan Dray (Apr 28) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Having not played in 7 months, I knew this would be a tough game, and Joseph proved too much in the end. Rustiness showed a lot on my part, but Joe was super consistent, making only 1 double fault the entire match! With strong down the line shots and the ability to place the ball where needed, Joe was far too strong and won the match with relative ease. However, it was great to get playing again, and I enjoyed my match and look forward to playing Joe in the future - hopefully without a 7-month break next time! All the best for your future matches."  -- Ryan

Player Comments:

  • "Great to see Lee again been a few years since we played. Always used to be close between us but Lee's had a few years off. Lee got a good start going 2 up in the first set before I managed to pull away although the games were close. The second set was a little less close with me playing more consistently recently paying off"  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "Really fun first match with Lee - weather was great and I really enjoyed it. I managed to serve well for most of the match which massively helped me win some quick points. We had some decent rallies and there probably was some good fortune on my side to win some close games."  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJames Gray bt Dan Hayman (Apr 20) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Definitely a game of 2 halves. The first set had some tight tennis with Dan taking an early lead but never being more than a couple of games ahead. I managed to battle back to 5 5 after saving a couple of set points to take the first set. After that there was a noticeable dip in the quality from both of us after we both seemed to lull after the battle for the 1st set. It managed to go with serve until I broke Dan and then held to take the match. Another good game with Dan"  -- James

We then shared 10 games over two sets, before I won the last 4 games, with my forehand hitting and serve being very consistent. Really enjoyable- and I'm glad we didn't go to a 3rd set as it was pretty tiring with all the long rallies! Good luck in remaining games Chris and hope to play again soon "  -- Michael

  • "Another fun match played this round, with great play from Michael and many entertaining rallies. The vast majority of games in the match went to deuce, so I was fortunate to be on the right side of them for the most part in set one. In the second set the tables turned and with Michael establishing a 3-1, 40-0 lead; a deciding set looked on the cards. Thankfully, I played consistently enough when it mattered to shift the balance of the set back in my favour and claim the win. "  -- Chris

Player Comments:

  • "The last time Mike and I played was blood boiling, gruelling three sets that took over 3hrs to finish. We played at the same lovely venue on a glorious sunny day. The first set was very intense with long rallies, breaking each other, but I managed to take it 7-5. The second set was even more intense with longer rallies; one ended over 30 shots! I was not returning well, with most first serves missed. Mike, with his strong forehand and groundstrokes, took the set 6-4. The third set was a bit of a nervy start for me; Mike has many breakpoints but was unlucky to capitalise. With some improved serves and solid returns, I dominated the third set and was surprised to have it 6-0. What a superb tennis match! Many thanks, Mike; see you soon."  -- Monir

Player Comments:

  • "The first set started with a block of holds followed by a succession of breaks, leaving the score line no more than one game apart throughout. A four point lead in the tie-break gave me enough breathing space to close out set one. The pattern of breaks continued into set two until game four, where I managed to get ahead to 3-1, and kept just enough momentum going to 6-2. It’s always fun to play Peter; lots of long rallies with varied shot-making involved is a given. "  -- Chris

  • "Peter won the toss and decided to receive. There were some good long rallies with some games ended to deuce. It was comfortable wine for me, 6-0. The second set started with Peter having breakpoints several times, but he was unlucky to capitalise. My drop shots, lobes and some passing shots did not allow Peter to win any games. Consequently, it was a double bagel. It was a joy playing. Many thanks, Peter. "  -- Monir

  • "It was great to be back at the Exhibition Park, and the weather offered all ingredients needed for outdoor tennis. First set scores do not reflect what happened; Chris was very close to winning several games but was unlucky to win important points. Reflection of the actual battle occurred at the beginning of the second set-Chris was leading 2-0 with an early break under his belt. With consistency and some solid hitting, I was able to turn it around. There were long rallies, and many deuces took ages to finish. Chris was very close to winning many deuce points. My slices and consistent drop shots did not allow Chris to win more games. It was a good turnaround fo me and thus was able to secure the 2nd set and the win. Many thanks, Chris."  -- Monir

  • "An enjoyable first match in the group at Leazes Park a venue I havent played at for a good while - the court surfaces and the markings are all fine but of the 6 courts two had no nets and two others had badly damaged nets . Fortunately there was no one else playing so we were able to get a good court and net!! Ioanna is new to the tennis league and this was her first match and we had a good game with some nice long rallies - good luck with your remaining matches Ioanna and am sure we will play again in the future "  -- Peter
Reveal CommentMonir Ahmed bt Simon Gow (Apr 8) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It was a pleasant sunny morning with some windy conditions. The first set was completed with some long rallies but I was able to dominate with winning shots. Simon took both defensive and attacking stance with ball striking at the very beginning of the second set. He had an early break and was leading the set 3-0. I thought I would not have a chance to recover from a break behind but was able to regroup with some tactical changes in my games. With my improved serves and dictating shots, I was able to break Simon's rhythm. Simon had improved consistency in shots but his double faults did not allow him to win any more games. A good turnaround for me and I was able to take the set too. It was a pleasure and joy playing! Many thanks, Simon."  -- Monir
