Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Brilliant commentary, very entertaining.  Well done guys for putting it together. I've had a good time and met some nice people,"

"I had a great time playing and made some good tennis friends from the league, so thank you for that!"

Sophie O'Connell

"The round was great. I won  all my matches which obviously is a real thrill. However at the same time. I was pushed and were all good, difficult opponents. It's good to play real, competitive matches with incentives to win and do well, while at the same time, not worrying too much about the results and just enjoying the experience without having to feel too much pressure or anything. All my opponents were extremely friendly, nice guys who I'd like to now call friends, and that's one of the main reasons I started to play more competitive tennis in the first place, to socialise and meet new people.  It's a real delight to win this great league, as I didn't believe I could ever win any tennis competition of any kind. I really can't wait to receive my certificate as I will be pinning it up on my wall. I will be entering again sometime. Many thanks,"

"Thanks for tennis balls and certificate- I enjoyed participating in the league competition and meeting new like-minded tennis players who enjoy the game. Delighted with all and will get the certificate framed. Will certainly play in league again next year. Thanks again,"

Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Stephen Squirrell (Jun 7) 6-3, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "A long, hard fought match with many games going to deuce and some brilliant rallies. Both players played well, hitting some great volleys and passing shots throughout the match. In the second set Stephen led 5-4 and 6-5 and was in a good position to take the set but I managed to force a tie break, only for Stephen to take a 6-2 lead. However, I hit back, taking the next 6 points and was relieved to have taken the match without it going to a third set."  -- John
Reveal CommentStephen Squirrell bt Matthew Davis (Jun 4) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A closer match than the score suggests with Matt having lots of game points but not managing to take them. Matt hit some nice passing shots, drop shots and lobs that had me running about! I was also fortunate with a number of net cords going in my favour! Unfortunately the 2nd set was more like aqua tennis as it started raining heavily and we were glad to get off in the end, drenched! Thanks for the game Matt."  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Chris Quince (Jun 3) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Good match with Chris today. The first set went by fairly quickly with the exception of the 3rd game which must’ve had 10 deuces at least. In the 2nd set Chris continued to cover the court really well and got a lot of shots back and my errors went up, giving him a 4-1 lead, serving for 5-1. Luckily for me I managed to race through the next 3 games without dropping any cheap points and despite a wobble when serving at 4-4 (going 0-30 down due to a couple of double faults) I found my way through that game and then managed to play a solid final game. Great game today Chris!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentStephen Squirrell bt Chris Quince (May 28) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match with Chris who started off slowly by losing the 1st few games but battled back to pick up a couple of games in the 6-2 opening set. Chris started the 2nd set well going 3-1 up with chances to make it 4-1, but took his foot off the gas and I managed to claw my way back to win the set 6-3 and the match. There were some long rallies and Chris hit a few nice short angled winners that I was unable to get back. I've been playing tennis a lot longer than Chris and in the end my experience got me through but we had a good match, thanks Chris. "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Matthew Davis (May 19) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I started well going 4-1 up before with Matt fought back to 4-3, before I was able to see out the set. Second set was a similar story. Matt hit a high percentage of first serves today, covered the court well and there were many good rallies, so a competitive work out for both players."  -- John
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt John Waites (May 15) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Really good game with John in lovely sunny weather with some decent quality tennis played at times. Lots of decent rallies & lots of tennis played throughout the match, meaning most points saw a rally take place & lots of games going to deuce. I had to hit well to keep ahead in the match & managed to pull out a few winners when I needed them most, as John really put me through my paces. Despite a few really tight games, I won the 1st set & then served better in the 2nd set, even hitting a few aces. John served well, attacking the net whenever he could, although by his own admission he didn't volley as well as he could today and that was probably the difference overall. Cheers for a really good game & a great workout John"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Stephen Squirrell (May 13) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Really tough game today where I had to work hard for the win. The first set was decent with a lot of tough long games. I managed to hold serve all the way to 5-1 and then Stephen broke, but threw in a couple of double faults to give me the set. In the 2nd set we had a mammoth 3rd game where Stephen eventually broke and went 3-1 up after some really good volleys and a couple of winners. Thankfully around 1-3 down was when the heat died down for 10 minutes to give me a 2nd wind - some good hitting and passing winners saw me over the line. Best of luck Stephen, can see you’re gonna have some good matches with the rest of the group!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentMatthew Davis bt Chris Quince (May 12) 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Chris and I have played several times over the past few years, however the first set today was one of our most competitive sets, with more winners then unforced errors! Most games went with serve until I broke midway though and served for the set at 5-4, however tentative play from myself and good consistency from Chris brought the score level at 5-5, we then traded further breaks before ending up in a tie break which Chris took 7-4. The first two games of the second set were close, both holding break points which I capitalised on mine and saved Chris’s, this had a big momentum shift in my favour and chris’s Level began to drop and my consistency carried me through the remainder of that set and again the third! Overall a really good game! "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Stephen Squirrell (May 10) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Stupid scheduling on my behalf meant that this was the first of 2 matches today and I suffered for it. I started really well hitting cleanly and raced into a 5-0 lead before Stephen served a game to love & then broke me for 5-2. I saw it out before the next set saw the momentum go with Stephen. He played really well hitting some lovely winners and some lovely angled volleys, limiting my opportunities to deservedly take the 2nd set. The 3rd saw a few more double faults from him and I managed to get myself over the line despite not hitting as well as I had in the 1st set. Great game Stephen, so unlucky, on another day you could've easily walked away the winner. He will test everyone else in this league and do well I'm sure!"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Imran Kirby (May 10) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "2nd game of the day meant I didn't have a lot in the tank after 3 sets in the spring sunshine earlier on. However, it's always a pleasure to play indoors & always a pleasure to play with Imran. I managed to take the first set by making fewer mistakes & less double faults but really needed to, as I knew I physically couldn't manage a 3rd set. I dragged Imran down to my level by playing some scrappy uninspired tennis and was deservedly 3-1 down in the 2nd set as he took charge. All I could do was dig in, keep grinding away and pray that I didn't leave him too many chances and hope that he made the odd mistake. I managed to scrape through with that approach & avoid a dreaded 3rd set, sorry & cheers Imran!"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Chris Quince (May 9) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A decent game with Chris on a surprisingly clement early evening at Exhibition Park. Chris dealt with my serve reasonably well, returning most of my big first serves and then keeping himself in the point. There was a lot of tennis played in the first set as Chris ran everything down and covered the court really well. I had to close the angles and attack the net constantly to stay on the front foot. Despite missing a number of volleys, I still managed to put away just enough of them to take the set although my percentages were 50/50 at best. Second set followed a similar pattern and I kept my nose in front from 2-1 up. A good game in decent conditions, cheers Chris & good luck for the rest of the league! "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Kearns bt Matthew Davis (May 9) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Constant drizzle, interspersed with heavy downpours, grey gloomy skies and heavy soggy balls........classic Local Tennis League tennis! Despite the testing conditions, it was still a good game with Matt, as it always is. Both of us served reasonably well, considering the state of the balls, and I was reasonably consistent hitting the lines, when a few of Matt's just went long, meaning that the fine margins made the difference. Matt always covers the court well and can pretty much run around any ball to get on his forehand which is his big strength, and he hit a couple of winners that I had no answer to. A good game and I look forward to the next one Matt......hopefully in the sunshine!!!! "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentJohn Waites bt Chris Quince (May 5) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I served well today, so was able to take control of the match. Chris played consistent tennis, making few unforced errors and ran down alot of balls, often extending the rallies. Cheers."  -- John

Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Joe Charlton (Jun 17) 3-6, 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Yet another topsy turvy match between Joe and I. Joe was much more consistent than me early on, winning the first 4 games with some volleyed winners as always, helped by some unforced errors by myself. Despite me fighting back to 4-3, Joe won the 1st set 6-3. The key moment in the 2nd set was when I fought back from 40-0 down to take a 3-0 lead and after that I made a lot less errors and won the set 6-0. I led for most of the 3rd set, although joe never allowed me to pull away, so I was relieved to close out the match. Both players played more consistent but cagier tennis in the 3rd set meaning there were some tense long rallies. A strange match where both players played well at times, just rarely at the same time!"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentJoe Charlton bt Michael Burke (Jun 10) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Very competitive match. When Mike was serving well he was winning games, and he hit plenty of winners with a solid cross court forehand. Neither of us were particularly consistent, but when I started reducing my errors the match swung in my favour. I look forward to next time!"  -- Joe
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Aitor Lopez De Uralde (Jun 10) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "We picked the best day of the week to play, with a terrible forecast for the other days. The first set was tight but I managed to secure the only 2 holds of the set in the first and last games to win it 6-3. Aitor started the second set quicker and I was never able to claw it back as his serve improved. When Aitor won the first game of the final set he seemed to have the momentum but fortunately for me I managed to start winning more of the long rallies again to win the decider 6-3. A very enjoyable, tight, tense match where both players had a bad record at holding serve as some really good groundstrokes were played. Nice to play Aitor again and to see Joe Charlton and Michael playing an equally tense match in this group on the next court!"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentAitor Lopez De Uralde bt Michael Burke (Jun 5) 4-6, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very competitive match played on a cloudy day. The first match was a little bit frustrating, with both players making the very difficult points with good shots but failing the easy ones. Mike took the first set serving pretty well, holding his serve and breaking on 5-4 for the set. The second set saw a drop on first serve percentage for Mike and Aitor was able to attack taking the set with a 6-1. The third set was very even with good rallies and good winners from both players, just resolved with a break in the last game for a final 6-4 and victory for Aitor. Well played Mike!"  -- Aitor
Reveal CommentAitor Lopez De Uralde bt Jonathan Greener (Jun 4) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Good match, especially being my first match after a hand injury that took me out of the courts for 3 weeks. Jonathan played pretty well, putting pressure on my backhand and coming to the net with good volleys. I was lucky enough to serve decently well at the important points, especially few times with 15-40 in the second set, allowing me to recover. Great match overall, with some good rallies, great winners and Jonathan clearly deserving more games."  -- Aitor
Reveal CommentMichael Burke bt Chris Stanworth (May 29) 7-5, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match. I was glad the first set wasn't a tie break as I lost first two games 8 1 in points. An even first set which I just edged. Higher quality second set, I raced into 5 2 lead but some excellent shots from Chris pulled it back to 5 5. A few forehand winners from me on Chris's second serve proved to be the difference in the end. "  -- Michael
Reveal CommentMichael Burke bt Jonathan Greener (May 25) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable Sat morning. But for Jonathan double faults the first set was very even. Both of us improved second set and most games went to deuce but some good shots at key points won me the set. "  -- Michael
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Jonathan Greener (May 20) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Monday evenings are popular at Exhibition Park, had to wait for a court for the 2nd week in a row and also for the 2nd week in a row spent the wait watching a Peter McCue group 3 match! Just as in my match yesterday the 7th game of the 1st set was key as I fought back from 0-40 down to win it. That gave me a 5-2 lead instead of a much tenser 4-3. Having won the 1st set 6-2, I took a 4-0 lead in the 2nd set as my serve briefly improved. However the pattern of the match had been lots of breaks and too many double faults from both players and that returned as the last 4 games were won by the receiver. Was relieved to win 6-2 6-2 and not have to try and serve it out for a 2nd time. Some entertaining rallies as both of us came to the net plenty"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentChris Stanworth bt Jonathan Greener (May 19) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game in decent weather. Some good tennis played by both players with a few mistakes sprinkled in to give the match a few twists and turns. I was able to find more consistency than I have in some recent games and Jonathan perhaps struggled to find the consistency he had when he beat me in our last match, but still played some excellent shots including some lovely winners. I missed a couple of opportunities to take control of the first set and found myself 3-2 and 4-3 down but was able to capitalise when Jonathan made a few double faults at the end of the first to take the set. Jonathan pegged me back to 3-3 from 3-0 in the second but I was able to get my nose in front again and take it 6-3. Cheers for the game Jonathan"  -- Chris
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Michael Burke (May 19) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable match on a lovely morning. As on Monday when I played, it was great to see fellow Active Newcastle League players all over the Exhibition Park courts. This was Michael's first match in the league and the first tennis he had played in 2019, so I perhaps played him at a lucky time when he was still slightly rusty, as if his powerful and impressive serving and forehand winners had been more consistent the result could have been different. First set started tightly reaching 2-2. The ninth game was the crucial one as Michael missed a break point to get back to 4-3 and instead I took a 5-2 lead. Michael led 3-1 in the second set, but fortunately my volleying improved and I won a few long rallies to fight back to win the match"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Chris Stanworth (May 13) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A glorious evening at Exhibition Park so we had to wait for a court. It did at least mean we could watch some of the Peter McCue v Sam Donovan game in group 3 to swell the local tennis leagues attendance numbers. Once started this was a hard fought match, with an endless number of games going to deuce and long rallies as neither player wanted to give away any silly errors with 1 crucial rally on a game point for Chris totalling over 50 shots, before I eventually won it. First set was definitely closer than the scoreline suggested. The second set was in the balance when Chris hit some lovely passing shots to make it 3-3 from 3-1 down. However my serve improved and I even hit an ace on the way to winning 6-0 6-3"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentAitor Lopez De Uralde bt Chris Stanworth (May 11) 2-6, 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Good match played on a decent spring day. I started breaking Chris serve but immediately fell into a massive slump... my confidence disappeared, helping the consistent game offered by Chris to take the first set set 6-2. As a good tennis league player I decided to blame external factors rather than my lack of skills and consistency and my Prince racquet was declared guilty and responsible of my bad first set, being replaced by a Babolat one. The new racquet combined with some good shots and a little bit of luck made me to take the second set with a 6-1. The last set was even, just decided by some good or bad decisions from both players at the critical points. Chris played a good match overall, showing great improvement from our last match."  -- Aitor

Reveal CommentPeter McCue bt Sam Donovan (May 13) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable match played on a beautiful sunny evening at a crowded Exhibition Park - Sam let me know before we started that he had left his racket at home and so had had to borrow a very cheap racket (probably about £3!) This did not seem to matter too much in the first game which Sam won however as the match went on it became apparent that controlling shots on the racket was very difficult and as such Sam lost a lot of points that with his own racket he would certainly have won . As such I had a run of 10 games to take the first set and a 4-0 lead in the second . At that stage Sam found the measure of his racket and came back strongly and at the end I was very relieved to close out the set and match 6-4. Overall a lucky win for me!"  -- Peter
