Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

Susan Dunn

"I had a great time playing and made some good tennis friends from the league, so thank you for that!"

Sophie O'Connell

"After 30 years of barely picking a tennis racket up, I'm enjoying playing again after starting in March. The league offers the opportunity to play against a variety of styles. It can sometimes be difficult to arrange league matches, particularly when the weather is so unpredictable. However, since playing my first league match v Matt Davis, in March we have played about a dozen friendlies,, so the league also offers the opportunity to meet others with whom matches can be arranged, not only between rounds, but also during rounds when league matches can't be arranged,"

Rajeev Dhirani

"Brilliant commentary, very entertaining.  Well done guys for putting it together. I've had a good time and met some nice people,"

Rich D

"The round was great. I won  all my matches which obviously is a real thrill. However at the same time. I was pushed and were all good, difficult opponents. It's good to play real, competitive matches with incentives to win and do well, while at the same time, not worrying too much about the results and just enjoying the experience without having to feel too much pressure or anything. All my opponents were extremely friendly, nice guys who I'd like to now call friends, and that's one of the main reasons I started to play more competitive tennis in the first place, to socialise and meet new people.  It's a real delight to win this great league, as I didn't believe I could ever win any tennis competition of any kind. I really can't wait to receive my certificate as I will be pinning it up on my wall. I will be entering again sometime. Many thanks"

A good summer round for the Newcastle league with some close competition for places and an excellent spirit on display in the many post match commentaries. Well done to the new group champs and we hope to see you all again next time!

Group Summary:

Stuart and Javier both secured five wins and bonus points to put themselves in contention for the prize. Well done to Matthew and Tom for showing fantastic commitment to get all seven matches played.

Reveal CommentMatthew Davis bt Tom Feltham (Sep 11) 6-0, 2-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A good match overall with some competitive rallies throughout. I played my best set in first set taking it to love with some confident ground strokes which all went in! Second set went Toms way where he proved to be more consistent. I managed to get the early break in the third and that was enough to see me home in some difficult windy/rainy conditions in the final set. Overall great match, cheers Tom!"  -- Matthew

Player Comments:

  • "We laughed in the face of BBC Weather's forecast of heavy rain and had some good rallies and deuce games in somewhat damp conditions."  -- Tom
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Tom Feltham (Sep 5) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another fun match. We were both pretty consistent on the ground strokes, but considerably less so on the serve, leading to numerous breaks and lots of good rallies once we'd tapped our second serves over the net to one another."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentJavier Bernardez bt Tom Feltham (Aug 30) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable match against a tough player. Very good contest with a lot of good rallies althrough."  -- Javier
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Joseph Barton (Aug 27) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A good contest with both players playing well. First set was peppered with some excellent rallies; one in particular which found both players up to the net popping volley after volley at each other. Second set I was able to find some better serving rhythm to close the match out. NB - if you are looking to play at exhibition park on Sundays there is a free tennis coaching session that takes over the three main courts from 1 - 3pm, so watch out."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentJavier Bernardez bt Alexander Perros (Aug 25) 7-6 (7-4), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match played on very good conditions. A very tight first set with good rallies ended in a intense tie break. On the second set I could keep a better rhythm on my serve which helped me to close the match."  -- Javier
Reveal CommentJavier Bernardez bt Joseph Barton (Aug 24) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match played on very good conditions. Specially the second set contained some good rallies with Joey fighting back from 4-1 having two break points to even the set but finally I could keep my serve and close the match out."  -- Javier
Reveal CommentLee Breheny bt Tom Feltham (Aug 21) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A close and an enjoyable match, which contained some good rallies. "  -- Lee
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Matthew Davis (Aug 20) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Windy morning at Exhibition Park. Nice to play Matt again after a while and glad he has recovered from his injury. Even played an extra 'friendly' third set after the match had finished, as we were both enjoying being out on the court. The match itself had a topsy turvy start as I won the first 2 games to love, before Matt responded by winning the following 2 games to love. After that I regained the momentum and won the set 6-2. Matt hit a series of eye catching winners to take a 2-0 lead in the second set. A run of long drawn out games followed with both players squandering game and break points as the rallies got longer as the match went on. I was relieved to edge these close games and turn the set around to win 6-2 6-2."  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Lee Breheny (Aug 15) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Scoreline was not reflective of the length of games and rallies that took place during this match. Both players found some consistency meaning there were no easy points. Not just a baseline slog either, there was plenty of play at the net as well to keep any potential crowd entertained. Lovely evening for tennis, shown by how we had to wait for a court. After the first set, the second set was much more tense and Lee took the opening game before saving 5 match points at 5-1, in a game which had 9 deuces, but I was eventually able to close out the match for a 6-0 6-3 win."  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Javier Bernardez (Aug 13) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A fast start from me allowed me to take the first before javi had really got going. Much more competitive second with some good rallies. I did find out after the match that javi had cycled to Sunderland and back again the day before AND he had some dodgy contact lenses in, but I need all the help i can get!"  -- Stuart

Player Comments:

  • "Lee broke serve in the first and after a great last game in the opening set to take the lead. It was a more comfortable second set played on a nice morning at Leazers Park."  -- Lee
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Tom Feltham (Aug 3) 7-6 (12-10), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A sunny but incredibly windy evening at Exhibition Park meant both players played the percentage shots leading to lengthy rallies. 750 characters is not enough to do justice to the tension of the 1st set tiebreak but let's just say it truly was one for the neutral. In the set itself Tom led 5-3 but we ended up at 6-6 after just 1 hold of serve each. Then came THE tiebreak. 4-2 Tom, 6-5 me, 3 set points for myself and 2 for Tom came and went. As the moon replaced the sun in the North Eastern sky, I finally nicked it 12-10 after a set lasting a measly 1 hour 20 minutes. His wife's comments (who wished for him to win or lose in 2 sets!) perhaps played on Tom's mind, and second set was much quicker although not straightforward as I took it 6-1."  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Alexander Perros (Jul 29) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Sunny Saturday afternoon in Exhibition Park. Evenly matched contest with a contrast of styles with Ali having success with the drop shot and putting a huge amount of slice on the ball. Lots of the early games were tight but I gained a 4-1 lead. Ali battled back to 4-3 and then saved plenty of set points before I saw out the set 6-4. In the second set Ali made the quicker start leading 3-0 before I fought back winning 5 successive games. Lots of long rallies made it hard work and Ali again made me work very hard to close out the set but I eventually won 6-4 6-4. Hope your refereeing continues to go well Ali!"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentAlexander Perros bt Matthew Davis (Jul 29) 6-4, 6-2

Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Matthew Davis (Jul 27) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Wet conditions due to an untimely downpour moments before we had arranged to play. A tight first set in which neither of us seemed to want to hold serve but lots of good tennis played regardless. I managed to find some serving rhythm in the second and with it was able to take the decisive second set. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentTom Feltham bt Alexander Perros (Jul 26) 3-6, 6-1, 7-6

Player Comments:

  • "This game had more momentum swings than a Newton's Cradle with both of us digging in for the final set. Ali deserves credit for fighting back from 2-5 down in the third to force a tie-break. An enjoyable match up with two contrasting styles of play."  -- Tom
Reveal CommentStuart Mcgowan bt Lee Breheny (Jul 23) 6-1, 3-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match that we managed to squeeze in just before the rain set in. "  -- Stuart

Group Summary:

Chris had to dig deep into his energy reserves in this round as half of his matches went the distance, and with four victories and points in marathon defeats to Kris and Daniel he gave himself a shot at the title. Joe notched up a fantastic five wins but was defeated by Chris in a topsy turvy three set encounter however the set he won in this head to head gave him the point he needed to edge into the outright lead. A shame to see Daniel withdraw - hope you're ok.

Reveal CommentChris Quince bt Joe Charlton (Aug 5) 6-2, 1-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great scrap. From 2-2, I took five games in a row to close out the opening set and get an early break in the second. From there solid play gave Joe a seven game run. That seventh game began the deciding set; I was broken to love, and struggling with some chest pain I thought the match would go downhill quite rapidly. I was able to get back on track and back on serve at 2-1. Joe led the fourth game 40-0, but I managed to take it and that was the last momentum shift in what was to be a six game run to me. Another enjoyable match with plenty of hard fought rallies."  -- Chris
