Player Comments:

  • "Very competitive match with Ali today. The 1st set in particular was a battle and we both got off to a good start on our own service games. I broke for a 3-2 lead but then lost my own serve before fighting to reel off the last 3 games which apart from 1 were all pretty close. In the 2nd set I got off to a good start with a consolidated break and I’d been serving well the entire match so felt some pressure slip away and I managed to get to 5-1 serving for it fairly quickly due to us both going for more winners. It was a tough game and Ali broke after I saved the first break point. Fortunately I won the last game comfortably. Great match and Ali covered the court very well and made a lot of extra balls."  -- Imran
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Kishan Patel (Jul 26) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great to play Kishan again and due to the forecast we took it indoors (typically the rain didn’t happen!) and had a great match. In the first set Kishan started well with a love-hold and had break points on my first game. I managed a hold and despite some ball-toss issues for another game I broke and took a commanding lead. Kishan did well to hold at 1-5 as I was 30-40 up but my serve was going well today so served it out. I started the second week going 2-0 up and thought it was going to be routine as Kishan was 0-40. After he held serve things became more interesting and although I held my serve comfortably it was a battle. When serving it out at 0-30 I came up with a few tough serves and took a close 2nd set. Well played Kishan!!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentKishan Patel bt Alexander Perros (Jul 25) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a battle of a match between Alex and myself. There were many great rallies with both players going for winning shots on several occasions. I had the luck of the net cord with a few bouncing over in my favour! A couple at key moments which made a big difference in two close sets. Looking forward to playing against Alex again, beat of luck in your remaining matches."  -- Kishan
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Alexander Perros (Jul 22) 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "This was one of the most extraordinary matches I have ever played in the league. I raced through set 1 6-0 as Ali was unfortunate I played my most consistent set for a long time. Although Ali started making less errors in set 2 I led 6-0 3-1 40-15 and seemed to be cruising, how wrong I was... Ali stormed back and grew in confidence, eventually forcing a 2nd set tie break. I thought I played well in the tie break but Ali had an extra spring in his step, relentlessly chasing everything down to take it 7-3. The momentum had shifted and Ali led 3-0 and 5-2 in the decider. I saved a match point at 3-5 down and somehow I won the last 5 games to claim the win. This was such a rollercoaster for both players, thanks Ali for a dramatic evening."  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Michael Burke (Jul 22) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Apparently I’m the opposite of Superman and prefer it when Earth’s yellow sun isn’t out. The warm and cloudy conditions definitely helped me today and as such I felt better on serve and return. First set was good and Michael was serving pretty well with fast, flat serves and very few double faults, tho as he mentioned between games I was able to get him on the back foot with my return and despite serving a few doubles myself my own serve got me out of 0-30 games today as I stuck with ‘proper’ serving. Michael started the second set great and was found g well in his own games but just a few pivotal errors cost him. He had his break point chance at 1-5 but I managed to get over the line. Well played!!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentMatthew Moffat bt Michael Burke (Jul 19) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "After 4 straight holds from both of us, I finally managed to break and then take the first set 6-4. By the second set we were both settling into the game and I would say this was when the best tennis of the evening was played. The second set was quite even throughout as a result, but luckily I broke at 5-5 and managed to take the second set 7-5. A great evening of tennis - thanks for the game Michael!"  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Joseph Barton (Jul 18) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Joey and I braved the heat this morning on a great day for tennis. In the first set we were both easing ourselves into the game, not going for anything huge. Most points were mid-length or short and the decisive 2nd break for 4-1 followed by a good hold helped me dig out the last game and the set. Joey upped his game in the second set and broke immediately. I broke straight back and kept ahead for the rest of the set but it was a much more physical and lengthy set with lots of backhand battles and (unfortunately) some double faults from me. Despite the trouble I managed to hold a crucial game to take a 3-2 lead and although still not serving great my groundstrokes kept me out of too much bother. Good luck for the next ones Joey!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentMichael Burke bt Joe Charlton (Jul 16) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Having had many close matches against Joe, I finally get to write the match report! Aided by having played a few more matches we traded plenty of deuces in first two games but I managed to hold and break. After that I played some of my best tennis, with around 3 winners most games- one of those days where every shot close to net goes over and every shot close to a line drops in. Good luck in remaining matches Joe and look forward to playing again "  -- Michael
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Matthew Moffat (Jul 14) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It gets said all the time, but this score isn’t a fair representation of the brutality of this match. After a shaky start where we both dropped serve I won the pivotal game to break for a 4-1 lead - after 10,294 deuces. And just as we said how much of a battle it was I cleaned up the last 2 games in 5 mins. Great, but we both again got off to another shaky start in set 2. I think I managed to stay ahead (apart from losing the first game) by making fewer mistakes and we had a lot of great rallies. 3 out of 15 games didn’t go to deuce which is why it was so tough to win this match for me. Well played and good luck for your other matches!!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentMichael Burke bt Chris Murtagh (Jul 14) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We had to wait a while to get started on a really warm evening- some good matches to watch before we got on. Match closer than scoreline suggested- Chris had break point on all my service games in 2nd set and but for quite a few double faults on his service games would have been much tighter. In the mini set we had after match, Chris won 4-2. Good luck in rest of games. Mike "  -- Michael
Reveal CommentKishan Patel bt Joseph Barton (Jul 13) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A hard fought win on what ended up being a glorious evening! The sun was shining from one end and blinding us when playing from that end meaning it felt like a break when you won a service game from that end! There were a lot of long rallies with some decent shots being played by both players. A bit more consistency from me meant I was able to get ahead and do my best to hold off Joey. Great match, and look forward to playing you again."  -- Kishan
Reveal CommentChris Murtagh bt Jack Collins (Jul 11) 7-6 (7-1), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really close match in which Jack was ahead in both sets so it could easily have gone the other way. Nice to met you an good luck for your remaining games Jack. "  -- Chris
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Jack Collins (Jul 11) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match on a warm day with Jack. Early on my serving was below par but fortunately I was able to hit a few decent forehands to relatively quickly win the first set 6-1, despite some nice slices and drop shots from Jack. Second set was much closer and particularly hard fought as Jack’s consistency grew in spite of the increasingly hot conditions. There were lots of long rallies and games which had several deuces right until the end of the match. I was relieved to win when I did as a 3rd set would have been hard work in those conditions!"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentAlexander Perros bt Chris Murtagh (Jul 10) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Close match with a lot of good rallies where both players made the other run and returned shots that were almost certain winners. Chris fought hard to come back in the second set after a slow start in the first, but after some brutal games, Ali edged out in front and closed the match. A very enjoyable match played in good spirit."  -- Alexander
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Jack Collins (Jul 10) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Jack and I took advantage of the amazing turnaround in weather tonight. Despite the deceptive score it was a competitive and fun match. In the first set I took advantage of Jack’s 2nd serve while both of us warmed our shoulders up. My serving was erratic with just as many double faults as aces or unreturned serves. In the 2nd we had some better rallies. Jack covered the court really well and a few shots I thought were winners came back. Jack also had a few epic drop shots. From my side I served a lot better and kept myself comfortably ahead until I choked serving it out at 5-0. Fortunately I managed to win the next game. Best of luck in the next match Jack!"  -- Imran
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Michael Burke (Jul 10) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a ‘local derby’ between doubles partners, which meant there were not many surprises on show for either player. I managed to edge a few close games early on to take a 4-1 lead only for michael to hit some great forehands in the following 2 games to bring the score back to 4-3. Fortunately I regained my consistency to come out on top in some long rallies and managed to take the set 6-3. Second set was also tight at the start and became a battle of the backhands. Due to damp conditions it seemed there was an advantage to being at the end sheltered by the trees so I was relieved to get a couple of breaks of ‘end’ to see out the match 6-3 6-2. Another very competitive and enjoyable match with michael "  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentAlexander Perros bt Michael Burke (Jul 8) 3-6, 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Brutally close encounter with some games lasting like a mini match. In a tough first set Michael came back from 0-2 and dominated the return games to take it 6-3 with some long rallies, great shots and gutsy play from both players. In the second set, Ali came back strongly, and carried it through into the start of the third set, managing to hold off a spirited comeback from Michael to scrape over the line"  -- Alexander
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Chris Murtagh (Jul 5) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match on a lovely evening. I managed to find a greater consistency than Chris which was probably the key to this victory. Lots of hard fought games and rallies though. Chris’s serve was particularly powerful and his backhand sliced drop shots caught me out a few times. Couldn’t believe it when Chris said he only started playing tennis last year. "  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentAlexander Perros bt Jack Collins (Jul 5) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Good tough match with long rallies, some good hitting from both players and most games going to deuce, closer than scoreline suggests."  -- Alexander
Reveal CommentJoseph Barton bt Joe Charlton (Jul 4) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Joe and I have played many times before in the league and this was another hard fought match. After 4 successive breaks to start I got the first hold to take a 3-2 lead. Those first 5 games seemed to go on forever on a humid day which made the long rallies tiring. I was thankful to Joe for giving me some sun cream in the heat! Eventually I saw the 1st set out 6-3 after some epic rallies and lots of deuces. In the 2nd set Joe started hitting some lovely volleys but I also started hitting more winners from the baseline. The 3rd game of the 2nd set was mammoth and once I won that after a lucky net cord I was able to see out the match fairly quickly 6-3 6-1. Enjoyable match as ever with Joe and I was pleased to avenge last autumn’s loss!"  -- Joseph
Reveal CommentKishan Patel bt Monir Ahmed (Jun 30) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A good match between Monir and I, a lot of long (and exhausting) rallies! I was a bit fortunate with the deuces, since they all swung my way so the score line is a bit flattering. Best of luck for the rest of your matches Monir!"  -- Kishan
Reveal CommentMonir Ahmed bt Chris Murtagh (Jun 27) 6-4, 7-6 (7-1)

Player Comments:

  • "It was Chris's debut, but the way he played was incredible. Both sets were very competitive, and Chris was leading both sets. With consistent serving and keeping Chris at the baseline, I managed to turn around for both sets. There were good long rallies for both sets. The first set was competitive, but the second set was even very close. Chris's unfortunate double faults in the second set did not help him much. I am sure with more practice, Chris will win many matches to come. Many thanks, Chris and looking forward to playing you again. "  -- Monir
Reveal CommentImran Kirby bt Monir Ahmed (Jun 27) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable match to kick off the round for Monir and I. The first set was competitive and as it was a little damp at the back of the court movement was cautious by both of us. As the court dried up and the temperature rose at 1-1 in the 2nd set I managed to up the tempo on my own serve and though Monir started to serve much better he didn’t really get into my service games the way he did for most of the first set."  -- Imran
Reveal CommentKishan Patel bt Jack Collins (Jun 17) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was Jack's first match of the league, so welcome Jack. This was a good match played on a surprisingly warm day which started tense as we were figuring out each other's games. There was some tremendous rallies throughout both sets, and some exquisite points won from the both of us, the type where you can't even be annoyed and can just admire the shot that has been played! Best of luck for your remaining matches Jack."  -- Kishan

Reveal CommentDan Hayman bt Michael Nee (Jul 28) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great game against Michael today, luckily the rain held off! Most games in the first set (especially my serve!) went down to a single point one way or the other, normally in a deuce, so the 6-1 score there exaggerates the difference between us. The second set was a lot closer, and I only just managed to hold a break up at 3-2 in a long deuce, taking me to 4-2 up. The final game was a very defensive one from both of us, especially the last couple of points, but I managed to pull through and take the set 6-2. Really enjoyable match, very competitive the whole way through, good luck with your other matches Michael!"  -- Dan
Reveal CommentRyan Dray bt Michael Nee (Jul 27) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A good match against Michael on his return to the league. I think rustiness showed on Michael part at the start and with strong serving I managed to take the first set. The second was where Michael found his groove and with stronger serving it was a tight set with him breaking back from 4-2 to 4-4 before me breaking back again to win the set. Excellent game and sure Michael will only get stronger the more matches he plays. Good luck in the rest of your games!"  -- Ryan
Reveal CommentDan Hayman bt Giorgio Garzon (Jul 25) 6-0, 6-0

  • "Good match today against Giorgio! Great rallies were had, particularly in the second set, and Giorgio almost managed to break my first serve of that set. I managed to take both sets, although the Richard factor - the fact that Giorgio was still fairly tired after his match against Richard the previous day - may have helped me out here today! Good luck with the rest of your matches Giorgio!"  -- Dan
Reveal CommentRichard Stephenson bt Giorgio Garzon (Jul 24) 6-4, 6-2

  • "Nice match against Peter in a new venue for me of paddy Freeman's park. The sun had finally retreated so it was a nice evening. Peter was as always very consistent with only 1 double fault the entire match. Luckily my serve was strong today and with some good shots by me I managed to take some key points and therefore the match. Was good to play again and looking forward to more matches. "  -- Ryan

Consistency from me and my best serving so far in the league helped me to take the win, but Cameron came very close in quite a few of the games! Good luck in the rest of your matches Cameron!"  -- Dan

Player Comments:

  • "Always close and enjoyable games when me and Dan meet, one break or serve decided the first set and managed to break Dan’s serve twice in the second set, closer match then the score line suggests as a lot of my points were just clipping the baseline and my serve was better than usual, thanks again Dan and good luck for rest of league! "  -- Richard
Reveal CommentDan Hayman bt Ryan Dray (Jul 11) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match at Exhibition Park today, managed to make the most of the sunny morning before the rain. Ryan started the match strong, breaking my serve in the first game and holding his to 2-0. I managed to break back and after we reached 4-4 I just about managed to break Ryan's serve, though I only just managed to hold my own! I had a more comfortable start in the second set, and probably relaxed a bit too much at 4-1, letting Ryan push back to 4-4. After that I was certain I was going to lose the set, but just about managed to fend off Ryan in my serve, and (again, just about) managed to break Ryan to take the match in a long deuce. Great match Ryan, I really think it could have gone the other way in both sets, just a few shots in it!"  -- Dan

Player Comments:

  • "An excellent match in the warm weather of exhibition park. It took a while for me to warm up and Richie took a commanding 4-0 start with strong serves and very little if any unforced errors. I managed to get back into the game and one a few key points which allowed me to take the first set after some excellent rallies. The second set was not as the score suggest with lots of games going to deuce and tight scorelines in most games with several going to deuce. An excellent Saturday in the sun playing tennis. Good luck in the rest of your matches Ritchie."  -- Ryan

  • "An excellent competitive game which genuinely had everything - lobs, aces, spins, smashes and a helicopter flying over! Cameron started well and managed to hold his serve well to take an early 2-0 need, which continued his good start as he managed to take the first set. I eventually managed to find a rhythm and with improved serving won the second set, the third I think fitness played a part which allowed me to take the win. An excellent game which had everything. Good luck in the rest of your matches, Cameron! "  -- Ryan
