Collapse AllActon and Gunnersbury Singles - Round 39 | Thursday 18 April 2019 to Wednesday 12 June 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 15 May 2019)

Nearly 80% of matches were played during this round and almost everyone in Group 1 and Group 3 got their bonus points - great results all round. Congratulations to all our Winners and Runners-up. Some epic matches were played by everyone this time, and we had some great analysis of the tennis in the match reports. It's nice to see you all reflecting on your matches and taking notes for next time! Let's hope we get some more consistent summer weather in the next round and everyone gets the chance to play plenty of good sunny tennis - see you under the summer sun!

Group Summary:

An action-packed Group One with everyone earning their bonus points - well done! We saw some real roller-coaster rides with matches often going to 3 sets and many lasting 2-3 hour - all highly competitive stuff! Congratulations then to Andrzej for winning the group with a clean sheet, and to Vikas our runner-up who only lost to Andrzej. Both players improved on their standings from the last round - well done. Glad to see some of you had lovely weather for your matches too - Vikas's comment beautifully sums up our feelings: "It should be a crime not to play tennis in such weather". Let's hope summer finally arrives (and stays) ready for the next round.

Player Comments:

  • "It was raining during the day and then it stopped in the evening just for us to finish the match. Chris has very good top spin strokes and first serves. during the first set I struggled with his style of play and my unforced errors. In the second set, I was able to break his service game and I just managed to hang-in to take the second set. we were then forced to the third set where we broke each other's service games and continued till the end. It could have gone either way as he covered all parts of the court and was difficult to hit direct winners. There was also a music festival in the park grounds, nearby the courts and throughout the match we were entertained with good music. It can't be better. Enjoyed playing the match with Chris"  -- Siddharthan

  • "We had to arrange 3 meetings to complete this match and no, it wasn’t due to bad weather or courts not available, etc In the first meeting I broke my tennis strings. Meet up after one week and then Chris broke his tennis strings so after both of us having restrung our racquets in the third meeting finally we managed to play our match. Moral of the story. Always carry a spare racket with you which nine of us were carrying unfortunately. Good fun though playing with chris. He has some decent inside out shots and great top spin. We had plenty of deuces and the weather was just perfect. Thanks for hosting me Christ "  -- Vikas

Player Comments:

  • "A real roller coaster of a match where momentum swung and stayed with the player in the ascendancy for lengthy periods. I started the match by reeling off 8 games in a row and everything was going well before Fergal came back to win the next 4 games and he went on to take the 2nd set. I began the 3rd set by winning 5 consecutive games. The scoreline in the 3rd set was not a true reflection of what occurred and there were some very good rallies. Fergal was ahead in the 4th and 5th games and yet I managed to dig deep to win both games which were the longest of the match. "  -- Andrzej

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAndrzej Szymanski bt Stan Sispela (May 4) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "We last played in September and it's good to have Stan back in the league. This was a tough battle which lasted for over 2 hours. When I lost the first 4 games the task appeared rather arduous. There were some long and gruelling rallies, one which lasted for approximately 30 shots which ended with Stan hitting a winner. All I could was smile after that point even though I'd lost it as we'd both given everything. By far the longest game of the match was the last one. Stan was serving and on 3 occasions he was match point down and held on. He then had a number of game points which I managed to save before I was finally able to win the match. "  -- Andrzej

Reveal CommentAndrzej Szymanski bt Christopher Jackson (Apr 22) 6-1, 4-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It's not easy playing in the heat, especially as we haven't played in these conditions since September. I thought we coped well and there were some good rallies, especially in the second set. I won four points in the second set due to being lucky when the ball hit the net cord and things seemed to be going my way, yet Chris broke my serve in the 10th game to win the set. I managed to put the disappointment to one side and I came back stronger in the 3rd set . "  -- Andrzej

Group Summary:

After a bit of a slow start (only one set of bonus points awarded in this round) everyone got into their stride and we saw lots of great matches. Well over half of all possible games played, many of them against familiar opponents, whether recent or from a few rounds ago. Congratulations to Robin for winning the group; he was also the only one to get bonus points - they do make a difference! Olamide comes in a very close runner-up, also with 4 victories, also beating Robin on her way despite his amazing comeback. Match of the group goes to Robin and Rob for their battle with a bouncy new court and new tennis balls - I bet this was a fast moving match! The whole round was beautifully summarised by Marc, noting that it really is just a couple of points between winning and losing. Until next time!

Player Comments:

  • "The first set started brightly for me. I took the first two games, but an improved display and some lapse of concentration on my part, saw my lead stripped away. At two-two, I forged ahead again, only to have the same thing happen again. However, I continued to play aggressively and adventurously, and was able to hold out to complete the first set to 4. The 2nd set proved to be more one-sided against my older opponent, and I was able to play more free flowing tennis without the risk of dropping significant points, seeing out the set to love."  -- Ed

Reveal CommentAlex Evans bt Ed Annan (May 4) 6-4, 5-7, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The match started off evenly, until Alex's aggressive groundstrokes began to pay dividends as he broke and held his own service game to lead 4-2. I rallied to bring it back to 4-4 before Alex turned it on with some fine net play to take the first set to 4. In the second set, a similar scenario kept me slightly ahead. When Alex broke me at 3-2, I immediately broke back, but was broken as I tried to serve out the set at 5-4. However, some excellent returns of service, defensive play and brave winners saw me break again and then hold my nerve to win the set to 5. The final set stayed tight, but at 2-3, the arduous nature of the match took its toll, and I was broken. Always playing catch up, I was unable to hold my serve, going down 6-3"  -- Ed

  • "I took an early break, but was broken for 2-2. However, I was able to break again and, despite how tight each game was, I managed to prevail. In the second set, it was more straightforward than the first, with Ade's unorthodox style bringing in more errors. I raced to a 5-0 lead before Ade recovered a game and put pressure on on the final game before I completed a 6-1 win with a volley at the net. "  -- Ed
