Collapse AllBath Singles - Round 6 | Thursday 27 June 2019 to Wednesday 21 August 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 24 July 2019)

Another nice round in the still-young Bath League. Thank you all for your support. If you can help spread the word that would be great. It would be nice to add a few more players to the summer into autumn round.

Group Summary:

Oliver makes it a hat-trick of group wins but it was a close run thing! With the group depleted after two early withdrawals, every remaining match would count and Oliver knuckled down to make sure he played them all. It was just as well as David beat him in their head-to-head and that made winning one more match vital. Even then, Oliver only grabs the group because of the point won for the set he took of David in that epic! Well done to both players.

  • "D. A. decided to do a drive by and tapped me up for my final game. It turned out to be battle of the ‘Spin Doctors!’ On my side of the net the customary topspin with the occasional slice on the other a master class in variation of backspin, chops as well as side spin that would not look out of place on a table tennis table. David kept the ball low and unplayable to perpetually drop shot me at will in all parts of the court closing out 1st & 3rd set identically with cunning control of knowing how to win excellent defensive play. My “0” just had to go. The match played in fair unquestionable spirits and won by a perfect sportsman! Well played David. "  -- Oliver

  • "The call of playing at the university outdoor courts was still the right touch as the Bath on the beach was still in party time. The match itself was likened to Foreman Vs Ali, thriller in Bath Uni. Radoslav as Foreman bashing the ball, myself, as Ali with the rope-a-dope game, returning balls, keeping the rally going! The set fantastically captured by Radoslav in 1 Hr 25 mins. Swaying on the ropes, energy levels waisted and lack of carbs, Radoslav sent for much needed sustenance to boost his game! With nothing to loose I pressed a little forward to close out the 2nd & 3rd set dropping two games in each. Without doubt Radoslav was a fantastic opponent and gifted tennis player played a great match!"  -- Oliver
Radoslav Kadiyski bt Richard Morris (Jul 29) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Crowds and traffic swarmed Victoria Park with Bath on the Beach so a detour to play at the University was the perfect tonic. Richard cycled in to the courts like a fluorescent knight & immediately dished out an array of punishing ground strokes. Quickly chalking up the 1st set 6-2 issued a valuable lesson in respecting the difference between confidence & cocky! Thinking you can win without playing for a few weeks is not smartest of ideas before a league match. Nevertheless, having to dig deep is character building so having raced into a 5-0 lead in the 2nd set & being pegged back to 5-5 was just that! Pulling off the great escape broke his spirits for me to close out the third set 6-2! Great match in tough windy conditions!"  -- Oliver

Player Comments:

  • "A good, competitive and cagey match in difficult conditions with the sun's position. I just managed to do enough in both sets but either could have gone Richard's way. Enjoyable game, thanks Richard."  -- David

Group Summary:

They were all square on four apiece, but Thomas is runner up thanks to victory in his head-to-head with Rhys.
