Collapse AllBattersea Park Singles - Round 38 | Thursday 29 August 2019 to Wednesday 23 October 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 25 September 2019)

A big round so lots of great matches played, though we are greedy here and could always do with more! If you are struggling to arrange a match, let us know and we will help if we can. Thanks for your commitment to the league and for creating such great opportunities for others to play. There is one more round this year, a ten week one to cover Christmas and the New Year, starting in November. We do hope you can join!

Group Summary:

A strange sort of a top group (in a nice way of course) where all sorts of winning combos might have happened but didn't. Crucially, we didn't get to see Alex v Joel, which really should have been the group-deciding match. Instead, a walkover allowed Alex the chance to equal Joel's points for matches won, while defeat to Matt in a cracker of a match provided a decisive additional point. Well done to Alex and well done to the chasing pack - everyone won at least one match and that is quite unusual!

Group Summary:

As with the group above, we didn't get to see the match between eventual winner Christopher and runner-up Mark. Slightly disappointing maybe, but it highlighted an exciting finish where no fewer than four players tied on nine points! When we can't separate tied players by means of the head-to-head record, the rule-book tells us to strip away bonus points and that leaves Christopher on top. While we don't read too much into it in situations like this as the three remaining players have similarly excellent records, the average of sets and games conceded per match gives Mark the runner-up position. A lovely group full of good tennis and a big welcome to the three new players, Mark J, Francis and Francisco,

Group Summary:

A real tussle between Matteo and Hugh for the top spot this time. Their head-to-head was an epic which went Hugh's way, but Matteo took a point from that match and crucially went on to play three more matches than his rival. These matches yielded more points for sets won in matches lost and a couple of bonus points - and that put Matteo clear at the top of the table. Well done to them both.

A few more matches played would have made things even more interesting in this group, and might have allowed Edzard to repeat his group winning performance of last time. Fergus may have been edged out of a win against Jonathan (what a fantastic match that was) but he did enough with his three wins and bonus points to stay ahead of the chasing pack. Group Summary:

Chris was the "law" in this group meting out double-barrelled (or at least straight-sets) justice in his full house of six matches. A great performance! If no one could catch Chris, the fight for the runner's up spot was a lot closer. Louis and Robin tied on points so it was all down to their duel in the sun, a three-setter that went Louis' way. Group Summary:

No fewer than five newcomers to the league in this group (welcome all) and you did us proud! It was one of the busiest groups and was in the end a battle between two new players for the top spot. Victory eventually went to Tom, unbeaten across his five matches. In fact Dick equalled the number of wins, but though he went on to play two more matches (the full-house of fixtures) he couldn't quite catch Tom in the points chase or mitigate the loss to his rival. An excellent group packed with good tennis - just need a few more commentaries!

Group Summary:

A shame we didn't get to see Marcello versus Andrew this round as, with the pair ending the round tied on points at the top of the table, this would have been the group decider. As it is we have to dig into the rule book to break the tie, and on the very narrow measure of the average of games and sets conceded per match played, Marcello grabs the top spot this time. In reality, it's well done to them both and to Ozge on his very good third place.

  • "Excellent match on the caroet 😀"  -- Marcello
Andrew Campbell bt William Boardman (Sep 1) 6-4, 6-4

Group Summary:

With a couple of withdrawals matches were harder to come by in this group and no one was able to earn bonus points. Alex was rewarded for playing the most matches though he was beaten by Robert (runner up this time) and Robert equalled him for matches won, the set taken off Stephen just tipped the points in his favour. A case of who plays, wins!

Group Summary:

It looks easy doesn't it? Twice as many wins and twice as many points as your nearest rival and a brace of bonus points to oil the tennis wheels. But in fact Mogamat had to play well and work hard for his group win so all the more credit for that! Well done too to Ramon for his silver medal, just pipping Tom to the position despite not having earned bonus points.

Group Summary:

Eight was the fashionable number of points to be sporting in Group 12 with no fewer than four players , by hook or by crook, reaching the total and crowding the top of the table. But only Kristofer and Rudy had managed it without adding bonus points, both winning four and losing one match. To separate them, we look to their head-to-head which gives the gold, on his debut performance in the league, to Kristofer. Well done to him and runner up Rudy!

Group Summary:

There was a lot more tennis to be had in this group, and who knows, the matches not played might have been more epics like the encounter between Shane and Oliver? Nigel seized the opportunity of being the top scheduler and by adding bonus points to his win against Yosiff is the group winner. In truth, hard to separate Julien, Joel and Shane, but the rule book gives second place to Julien simply because he conceded fewer sets and games. Plenty to build on for next round.

  1. Nigel Allsopp [W1, L2] 5 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
