  • "Much better conditions than the last time we played. Was a pleasure to face the great spinning serve again and enjoyed some energetic sprints around the court trying to fend off the topspins! Thanks again."  -- Wesley

  • "Terrible conditions but we made a great game of it. First time I have felt comfortable going for the shots and served well 2nd/3rd set. Brilliant rallying from j-p and it was a great competitive match "  -- Darren
Reveal CommentIan Holoweckyj bt Richard Washbrook (May 12) 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I offered little resistance to Ritchie's game first set and was in familiar territory down 2-0 and 4-2 in the second as Ritchie's far greater consistency paid dividend, but the match wierdly begun to swing and after drawing level 4-4, rallies got long and well contested, we ended with a tie-break falling in my favour. I kept my consistency in the third set and was promptly 2-0 down, but four games on the bounce was as surprising to me as understandably frustrating for Richard. At 5-3 I served for the match and was well broken, before breaking back to win at the fifth or sixth opportunity. I go to bed barely able to move my legs, with feet covered in blisters and half an inhaler used, I'd still do it all again - many thanks Ritchie"  -- Ian
Reveal CommentPasquale D'amelio bt Ian Holoweckyj (May 9) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The last time our paths crossed was about 3 years ago, so it was good to play Ian again today. After a bit of a shaky start, I managed to settle in and get used to the fair but blustery weather at BLTC. The courts had recently been cleaned and were in good condition, so this was a good stage for our latest face off. The wind also added another dimension to the match - sometimes giving a helping hand to keep the ball in when it looked like it was sailing long and other times nudging the ball the wrong side of the line when a stroke itself felt ‘good’. I lost count of how many deuce games we played, but needless to say there were a lot. On this occasion I came out on top, but I very much look forward to our next sparring session."  -- Pasquale
Reveal CommentIan Holoweckyj bt Ryan Chandhar (May 7) 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "First match against Ryan, played in great spirit and integrity. I'd hoped previous mentions of Ryan's serve had been exaggerated, not so - I expected a string or the racket frame to snap when I could hit the ball, I've never been aced so many times! First set was decided by just one break of serve in the 7th game, as a few shots missed their spot. Second set Ryan broke me early to lead 4-1, before I broke back and we held serve to the tie-breaker, Ryan comfortably closed 7-3. Third set strangely didn't follow what had come before, and from 1-1 the games fell in my favour. Pleasure to play such a tough, but thoroughly enjoyable game, one that hung on just a few points, that I feel very fortunate to have won."  -- Ian

Reveal CommentIan Holoweckyj bt Darren Kent (Apr 29) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Entertaining encounter on the BLTC courts, weather ok but the threat of rain wasn't far away. The first set largely went with serve bar the odd break, Darren strikes the ball hard and we played out some decent rallies, I was already blowing after two games! Second set, I was 5-1 up but all games seemed to hang in the balance, and the set was eventually closed out 6-4. It's been about three years since Darren and I last played each other - I hope we get a social game arranged when the league finishes and not leave it another three years !"  -- Ian
Reveal CommentWesley Randle bt Ryan Chandhar (Apr 27) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking game with some intermittent mizzle. Ryan started well with a 2-0 lead and led 4-2 until the game changed and i started hitting a few winners to bring it back to 4-4. Ended WR 6-4 RC. Second set was a bit wet with a few slides to reach drop shots and spinning serves. I went 4-2 up and we nearly stopped because of the rain but continued and then thankfully the rain stopped. 4-4 in 2nd second set and ended WR 6-4 RC. Great match all round. Thanks Ryan."  -- Wesley
Reveal CommentRyan Chandhar bt Pasquale D'amelio (Apr 27) 2-6, 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another tough encounter with Pasquale again today and always a really close match when we meet. A very unusual match however today and very much a match of 2 halves. I was crushed in the first set with pasq playing some really great tennis. In set 2, after a tough hold at the start, i played some great aggressive tennis and fortunately Pasq's level dropped from the first set. The 3rd was very much the same as the 2nd and I managed to serve out the match with some great serving. It is really nice to be back to winning ways after a really poor start to the league. Thanks Pasq and all the best for the rest of your matches. "  -- Ryan
Reveal CommentWesley Randle bt Darren Kent (Apr 25) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Splendid game against a powerful hitting and excellent cross court play from Darren. Darren led the first set with 5 games to 2 and the wind changed and i somehow won the first set WR 7-5 DK. Second set was equally as competitive with both playing some attractive tennis / ground strokes. Second set ended WR 6-3 DK. Lovely game in the evening sun - thanks Darren."  -- Wesley

Player Comments:

  • "Bit of a black country derby down in Beds and it didn't disappoint. I really struggled to break Wesley down and couldn't get a look in early on, Wes took a 5-2 lead dictating the style of play. I got it back to a tie break but again Wes was on top winning all the longer rallies. Second set i tried to be a bit more aggressive, this time I took a 5-2 lead, like in the first another turn around and I was lucky to edge the set. Wes was back on top in the third and took a 4-1 lead again dictating play. I got a bit frustrated with myself and started to go for the forehand more which paid off. Tight tight match, coin toss who won in the end, cracking run around going to ache tomorrow, cheers Wesley!"  -- Richard

  • "Great first match back after lockdown. Enjoyed every minute Ian - thank you. Hottest day of the year so far and the first set was very even up to 2-2. Finished WR 6-2 IH 2. Second set was again equally matched to 2-2 then WR 6-2 IH. Some good rallies and cross court play (lefty/righty). Few rusty shots went astray but all in all and competitive strenous match."  -- Wesley

Reveal CommentJean-Paul Dowding bt Ryan Chandhar (Apr 15) 7-6 (7-5), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was such a close match - one break of serve each in the first set and only one mini-break in the tie-breaker. In the second set Ryan had break point to go 5-1 up and somehow I pulled it back. Not sure what made the difference today, I was just determined to keep the ball in play as much as possible but when Ryan's serve and ground-strokes get going it is so hard to play against. Great fun match. Thanks Ryan, good luck in your remaining games!"  -- Jean-Paul
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Darren Kent (Apr 12) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "I settled a bit quicker than Darren taking a 2-0 lead, Darren then played some really good tennis to get it back to 2-2. I served loads better in the first set than i have been in other matches so played with a bit more freedom. I lost focus with my serving in the beginning of the 2nd dropping my serve twice by giving too many doubles and free points, Darren really upped his game taking a 3-1 lead, he nailed the short centre ball with his whipped forehand multiple times hitting the corner of the lines.. some cracking shots. I found my serve again and managed to turn the second around. Some nice long rallies towards the end as we were both growing a bit more confident with our shots. Cheers Darren!"  -- Richard
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Jean-Paul Dowding (Apr 11) 2-6, 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Jean-Paul really battered me the first set. I had no confidence in any shots everything was landing short, JP put the short balls away for fun and volleyed really well. Second set I went for more depth on the forehand and started to find some serves. JP started well in the 3rd winning some tight games going 3-1 up, I didn't play that well in the 3rd but managed to grind out the games. Still can't get my head around this game after lockdown, JP probably deserved the W, another one I got away with, really fun morning.. cheers Jean-Paul!"  -- Richard
Reveal CommentIan Holoweckyj bt Jean-Paul Dowding (Apr 8) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Bit blustery, but after months indoors, we're certainly not moaning! It was really great to blow away the cobwebs, get out and swing a racket! Most of our games went to deuce, contrasting styles made for good rallies and well contested points - the score somewhat flatters me. The BLTC courts have been recently treated and play really well. I think we both really enjoyed our exchange and look forward to future games."  -- Ian
Reveal CommentRichard Washbrook bt Ryan Chandhar (Apr 8) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "First match since Jan 2020, so good to be back on court again! Ryan is a top guy, couldn't read his first serve at all and puts the ball away when it's in his zone. We were both rusty, too many double faults, too many horrible shots. First set wasn't pretty it was a case who could put a few games together in a row. Second set Ryan came out firing, had points for 0-3, and 40-0 up for a 3-1 lead, no clue how i ended up ahead. Thanks Ryan, good fun and good luck in your other matches."  -- Richard

  • "This was played on a calm wam Friday evening (a bit of a rarity this May) with no wind - so perfect conditions. Josh started with a combination of strong shots and fast serves and this led to a very close first set which swung on only a few points. The following set again had long rallies but this time I managed to keep my unforced errors to a minimum which was enough to take the second set. Overall great match to start the long weekend. Good luck Josh for your following games."  -- John

Player Comments:

  • "I hadn't played Gerry before. So, the first thing I look at with a new opponent is whether he is left or right handed. The practice serves were left-handed, so I have it in my head that he is left-handed. Then, in the first game, I play to where his backhand should be and he hits a forehand. What? It turns out that he is either handed and swaps around all the time. That's a new one on me. The play was very even until the third set when dark clouds were threatening. Somehow the clouds helped me to make the third set decisive."  -- Ben
