Group Summary:

Never mind the tennis, what great scribes in this round! Every single match came with a commentary, all of which made very enjoyable reading. We particularly enjoyed Alan's description of Chris's 'sledgehammer forehand making me run from pillar to post like a headless chicken,' and Chris's description of 'sandy, grubby, gritty, damp astro'. Oh, and as for the tennis, well it was great! Close matches, 'on fire' players, and a very warm welcome extended to newcomer Dinko to beat off the cold! Roger takes gold and Alan silver!

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks Chris for a titanic battle. Going into a h2h record of 4-4 against you, and knowing it'll be a while before our next match before I relocate, I think it added a bit of spice to the match. The scoreline certainly flattered me. If it were on tv, people would have seen your sledgehammer forehand making me run from pillar to post like a headless chicken!! I just had to hang in there, pray, scramble and pray some more! Fortunately, with a lot of luck, the outcome was favourable to me. Thanks Chris for a great game. I thoroughly enjoyed it!"  -- Alan

  • "Ben Ben Ben...I hope I haven’t ruined your Christmas with this win! Neither playing our best but I don’t think my day was quite as bad as yours - still good to have a hit over the festive period though...and thank goodness we chose the dome because some of the rain was biblical. All the best for Christmas dude and I’ll see you in the next round if not before ✌️"  -- Chris
Reveal CommentChris Johns bt Dinko Georgiev (Dec 23) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for the match Dinko and thanks for coming down to the dome to play. Really good to meet you and always nice to see a new face on the ‘tour’. The scoreline was a little flattering to me, I think you’re just short of a little match practice and perhaps a little distracted by the insanely good kid practicing next to us!! Good luck with your remaining matches and I look forward to playing again in future rounds. Oh...and merry Christmas "  -- Chris

Reveal CommentAlan Lam bt Premkumar Jeyapaul (Dec 8) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for the game Prem. As always, hard to tell who's ever going to win between us but I think the key today was I got into my rhythm from ball 1 and that was the difference. I don't think you played as well as you could so I was lucky not to play you when you're in turbo mode!"  -- Alan

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentChris Johns bt Premkumar Jeyapaul (Dec 4) 2-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Cold, cold, cold...really rather cold. It was another epic encounter with the self proclaimed rock star of tennis Premkumar Jeyapaul, and dude...you had me well and truly on the ropes in that first set! Having won the first game I hardly got a look-in after that and your drop shots were awesomely punishing - made me look like my boots were made of concrete! However, and it’s a big however, due to scheduling issues we had to switch from hard to astro, and I never thought I’d say this about sandy, grubby, gritty, damp astro, but I think it saved me! The change of conditions nullified some of your weapons and allowed me to claw myself slowly back into the match and rise like a Phoenix from the flames (???) - cheers dude t’was fun✌?"  -- Chris

  • "What a game Ben. You ran away with it and then me and back and forth over 2 days with some Italian passion and your racket survived and I just nailed it Far too close for comfort, you've definitely stepped up !!"  -- Premkumar

Group Summary:

No bonus points here but just like group one, every match came with a match report - thanks so much! Simon who has joined the league after playing in Poole did himself proud winning 5 matches out of 5 to top the group but it was not a walk in the park. Among others he had to get past Anthony's attacking play, Peter's backhand slice and long rallies against Thomas who plays in a similar style. Congratulations to him and also to an in-form Toby. All in all, great tennis and great write ups. Well one all.

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentSimon Vening bt Anthony Hughes (Jan 18) 7-5, 2-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A competitive match which was finished under the floodlights at Branksome. Momentum ebbed and flowed throughout, with Tony playing some excellent attacking shots on both the forehand and backhand sides. He raced into a 4-1 lead in the first, took the second set 6-2 and had a 3-0 advantage in the decider. Luckily I found some consistency and was just able to get over the line. Thanks Tony and hope to play again"  -- Simon
Reveal CommentSimon Vening bt Toby Wadey (Jan 13) 7-5, 0-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "In blustery conditions and occasional drizzle Toby and I played out a match that could have gone either way. Sandwiched between two close sets was a period in which Toby was unplayable. After taking a tumble near the end of the first he composed himself and upped his game. Toby’s attacking play and shots at the net had me firmly on the back foot. Fortunately for me his consistency dropped slightly in the third and some key points ultimately decided the outcome of a very close contest. Thanks for an enjoyable match Toby"  -- Simon

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match at Branksome where Pete had me working off lots of Xmas calories. He found his range and composure in the second set and his excellent backhand slice got him back from 5-2 down to level at 5-5. He also saved 2 match points at 5-4 and was 4-0 up in the tie-break. Needless to say I was relieved to get over the line! Have a great New Year Pete and thanks for the match"  -- Simon
Reveal CommentSimon Vening bt Thomas Clarke (Dec 8) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "In occasionally gusty conditions this proved to be a hard fought match. Tom and I quickly found that the similarity in our playing styles produced some lengthy rallies. The second set in particular was closely contested and included a marathon eighth game at 4-3 as Tom threatened a comeback. A thoroughly enjoyable match which was completed just before the heavens opened. Thanks Tom and hope to play again sometime"  -- Simon
