Group Summary:

What a tussle for top spot! Third-placed Nicky was definitely in the chase but the real battle was between Radoslav and Luke. For Luke to win the group he had to play one more match and take a set off Radoslav in their head-to-head! Radoslav won that match so can justifiably claim the bragging rights (along with the silver) but by going the extra mile, Luke is the champ this time! Only two matches not played in this group and everyone earned their bonus points. It doesn't get much better than this!

It was a match of twist and turns, Nicky struggled to find his way in the first set, then put me on the back foot in second set taking a 5-2 lead. I recovered to 5-4 but Nicky held strong and broke me again to take the second set 6-4. It was a cagey start to the final set. Nicky had a bad 5th game and I broke him to make it 3-2 then didn’t look back and hit some big serves to close it out. The match could have gone either way. Thanks Nicky. "  -- Luke

Group Summary:

By contrast with the group above no one got their bonus points in Group Four but that didn't mean their wan't some excellence tennis! Nevertheless, the winning margins were as slender as can be with James M and Vincent both tying on six points. Normally we would look to a head-to-head to break the tie, but this time the two did not meet, so we have to dust off the rule book. On the narrow measure of sets and games conceded, James M prevails!

Great net play from Jeremy, my defensive style was able to edge me through the first set but wasn't enough for the second. Played at Victoria Park and unexpectedly had a jazz band playing some decent songs in the background!"  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "A great match in windy conditions. I struggled with my serve early in the first set with James playing solidly to take a 4-0 lead, this made life difficult for me but after winning a few consecutive games the battle for the first set was on. Neither of us could break the deadlock so a close tie break decided the first set. There were some epic games battling it out at deuce for what seemed like ages early on in the first set. We stayed on serve untill 3-3 when I broke twice and held serve to finish the second set 6-3. A really enjoyable game of tennis."  -- Jake

Player Comments:

  • "We played the first two sets a couple of weeks ago and had to abandon our game because the game went on longer than expected and we had to leave the court for others . So we got together on Sunday and played the final set In fairness to Michael he had taken his lovely mum ( who was visiting from Ireland ) out for Sunday lunch so I had a big advantage . Our game was played as usual in great sprits and I look forward to our next games . Thank you Michael "  -- Eamonn

Player Comments:

  • "A lovely evening - great sunny weather and a light breeze. We had some very long rallies (as expected!) - Eamonn pretty much gets everything back which makes him a tough opponent. He was very consistent in the first set, hence the score. Thankfully I was able to get some games in the second set, which helped me. The third set was very close and I was just relieved that it didn't go to a tiebreak :) A really enjoyable match played in good spirits as always."  -- Sarah

  • "Fab game played again in some glorious morning sunshine. Closely fought match dominated by some big serves from both players; this resulted in neither of us finding our rhythm till mid way through the second set. Once we did some entertaining and interesting rallies started taking place. Doug has an awesome topspin forehand that I could certainly learn a lot from. Thanks and look forward to playing again soon. Adam"  -- Adam

Group Summary:

Lee and Alexandru played what looks to be the most exciting match of the whole round, and the three-setter proved crucial to the group result but in an unexpected way. Having edged "the longest game of my life", newcomer Alexandru might have thought he was on track to win the group, but the experienced Lee had bonus points up his sleeve and those combined with the point for the set won off Alexandru meant that he topped the table. A great performance from both players who can be justifiably proud of their matching tally of six wins each. Let's hope they will meet again in future rounds!

Reveal CommentLee Bardwell bt Tom Gibson (Jun 19) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We say all the time that the score doesn't represent what happens in the match, and this was a classic case in point. Tom has a fast racquet technique that makes it difficult to predict his shots, although a few came a little short allowing me to pick them off. Polar opposite match conditions to the last time we played on a floodlit court on a cold November evening -- I'm looking forward to our next encounter! Thanks Tom."  -- Lee
Lee Bardwell bt Rachel Smith (Jun 13) 6-2, 6-1
Reveal CommentOliver Vinnicombe bt Marianne Smith (Jun 8) 3-6, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This 3 Set epic was not a high quality affair on a difficult windy day at Canford Park. There were flashes of quality from both players however, with some good passing shots and lobs from Marianne and some accurate first serves getting Oli out of trouble on more than one occasion, as well as some brave net approaches that had varying degrees of success! The final set was a topsy turvy affair where Marianne raced into a 3 game lead. Oli then started to get on top of some slower serves and managed to win the deciding set 6-4 in the end. It was a close match that could have gone either way! Thanks for the game Marianne. "  -- Oliver
Lee Bardwell bt Martynas Tamulevicius (Jun 5) 6-4, 6-4
Reveal CommentTemi Odanye bt Oliver Vinnicombe (Jun 4) 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A long and close game that could have been won by either player but Temi's consistency won out in the end with just a few too many unforced errors coming out of Oli. Both players took some time getting there eyes in but once that happened there were some great rallies, great passing shots and great net play. It was a fun game despite the wind and the hunger felt by both. Thanks for the game Temi!"  -- Oliver

Lee Bardwell bt Temi Odanye (May 23) 6-1, 6-3
Reveal CommentLee Bardwell bt Oliver Vinnicombe (May 20) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A wonderfully pleasant evening's tennis as the sunset drenched the skies at Coombe Dingle a peachy red. I think I hit my stride more quickly than Oli, getting a set under my belt. However it was all-change for the second set, as Oli left me standing time and again with a thundering low drive. I inched out to get to 5-2, but he saved the match point on my service game to bring the score more level, taking the next game as well. I got a more comfortable 40-0 on the next attempt though, enough to keep the nerves at bay to close out the match. Cheers Oli."  -- Lee
