Another great round for the massive league that is Bromley! Old faces and new met on the courts for some really exciting matches, full of tight sets, lengthy rallies and deuce points. Reveal CommentPaul Pechey bt Richie Jackson (Sep 24) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A beautifully warm and sunny afternoon with just a slight breeze to contend with. We didn't have many rallies, especially in the first set as Richie went for everything, but unfortunately sprayed more errors and double faults than winners. The second set was closer in points, and we had a couple of very long deuce games on my serve, winning one each. Thanks for the game Richie."  -- Paul

  • "Paul started well with breaking my serve and taking first gem but was struggling with consistency throughout the game today. He made to many unforced errors which helped me to win today. Thanks for the game Paul. "  -- Pawel
Jan Kardas bt James Janowski (Sep 17) 6-1, 6-1
Reveal CommentPaul Pechey bt James Janowski (Sep 16) 7-6 (8-6), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really, really close first set, played on a slippy surface. I went 2-0 up only to be pegged back to 2-3. We stayed on serve, fighting hard into a tie-break. The breaker was a tense, tight affair, and despite me always being ahead James was never out of touch and levelled at 6-6 with a close point at the net. Somehow I managed to just edge the next two points. In the second set James changed tactics and went for more winners, hitting some lovely forehands and drive volleys into the corners. However the error count also rose a little and somehow I managed to fend off break points on consecutive service games to keep the pressure on, and eventually broke again with my fourth match point. Really enjoyable match. Thanks James."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPawel Solak bt James Janowski (Sep 10) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Today we've had a difficult surface condition. Despite the wind it was wet surface when we started. During the game the court was drying and in some places was slippery and dry in other. This made a game difficult for both of us. We had to concentrate on the game and be extra careful not to fall (which happens to me in the first set). I think I adjusted better to this conditions today. Thanks for the game James. "  -- Pawel

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentPaul Pechey bt Tom Tyne (Sep 10) 6-3, 5-7, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was a slightly greasy court after overnight rain, which gradually dried out. I broke first in the first set and served it out with a volley that just crept over the net. The second set swung three times: after breaking in the first game I went 5-1 down, but recovered to 5-5. Tom held serve to lead again at 6-5, and we looked set for a tie-break as I got to 40-15 on my serve. But Tom came back and won the next four points, finishing it off with a lovely backhand crosscourt volley. In the third set I got two early breaks against Tom's serve-volley to go 4-1 up. Unfortunately a slight delay while having to regrip my racket at changeover caused Tom's concentration to dip a little at the end. Thanks for a good game Tom - very enjoyable."  -- Paul
Jan Kardas bt Richie Jackson (Sep 10) Walkover

Jan Kardas bt Tom Tyne (Sep 3) 6-2, 6-3
Reveal CommentPaul Pechey bt Nigel Pope (Sep 2) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A really close game of cat and mouse played on a perfect sunny and windless day. Nigel went 2-0 up but then I found my range and managed to win the next six games, although they were all very tight. The second set was a bit more see-saw as Nigel changed tactics and went into a 4-1 lead with a double break. However I managed to adjust my rhythm and worked my way back to four-all thanks to some well timed volleying, then 5-4. After two more holds I earned myself two match points, but only needed the first after Nigel's lob drifted a couple of inches long. Really good, close match. Thanks Nigel."  -- Paul
Jan Kardas bt Julian Leichtmann (Sep 2) 6-4, 6-4
Reveal CommentPawel Solak bt Julian Leichtmann (Aug 29) 7-6 (7-2), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We started the game late. First set was very tight. It was cloudy sky and was getting dark early. I wasn't sure to play second set becouse of the darkness but we decided to carry on. I switched more to safety tactic as wasn't confident to hit the ball at these conditions. Fortunate I was more lucky in the second set. Thanks for the game Julian. "  -- Pawel
Reveal CommentNigel Pope bt Tom Tyne (Aug 28) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Played on lovely morning, in perfect conditions, Tom started strongly winning the first three games. There were plenty of good rallies and some great volleys from Tom, but Nigel fought his way back into it and Tom lost a bit of form on his trusty forehand towards the end."  -- Nigel
Reveal CommentPawel Solak bt Tom Tyne (Aug 27) 6-3, 6-3

Reveal CommentPawel Solak bt Nigel Pope (Aug 20) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "I had to put my concentration to the highest possible level in this game. My one to one record against Nigel wasn't great as I lost few games in the past and I knew it is not going to be an easy game. Nigel is moving very well on the court, playing smart tennis without many errors. Very good game in good spirit. Thank you Nigel. Pawel "  -- Pawel
Julian Leichtmann bt Richie Jackson (Aug 20) 6-4, 6-4
Reveal CommentPaul Pechey bt Julian Leichtmann (Aug 19) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Played on a very windy day which made it very difficult to get any rhythm, and consequently it wasn't a pretty match. The match was fairly evenly balanced with quite a few deuce games, but the play was littered with unforced errors and double faults on both sides. When one player got ahead, the other would break back to keep it close. Somehow I was able to edge both sets by staying slightly more consistent and composed in the tight moments, but it could have gone either way. Thanks Julian!"  -- Paul
Jan Kardas bt Paul Pechey (Aug 13) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Strange match, with neither of us really getting any momentum through the match. I couldnt find any rhythm, causing me to mis-hit a lot of my shots, and with George being so damn consistent I couldn't find it in me to put away any shots. I scraped through the first set, but in the second George put a lot more pressure on me, and I didn't seem to have many answers today. In the final set I decided to dropshot more to bring George away from the baseline. The change of tactic allowed me to stop George's rhythm and build up the point. Great battle as always. Cheers george"  -- Kai

Player Comments:

  • "Vivek and I played early - great temperature and little wind to speak of - the early games were a mixed bag - neither of us was able to hold serve until Vivek broke and held to get a 4-2 lead - being two games down seemed to become my cue for improving my play - I was able to take the next 4 games and take the set. Vivek again held and broke to take a 2-0 lead - my cue again, it seems - next six games went to me - very close rallies and a lot of deuces - thanks for a great game, Vivek!"  -- Tosin

George was a very tough opponent who I struggled to get my ground strokes past. Thanks George."  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match with a friendly atmosphere. Luckily I was swinging really from the start and managed to break Wills first service game. I had the momentum from there and was fortunate that will was making a few mistakes here and there to see the set off. I started strong in the 2nd getting off to a 3-0 start, But will started to relax and let loose. Eventually punishing most of my service games with powerful for forehand winners. Will broke enough to get back to 4-4 in the second. I managed to keeo my nerve to break and hold to win the second 6-4. Most likely helped by the fact that it was wills first time on clay! We had to call ground control to swap courts such was the length of the third set decider which I sneaked through 6 - 4. A great match, thanks Robert! ...... Player Comments:

  • A very close evenly matched encounter. At the first attempt we played two sets and took one each. We rearranged for the decider. Nick took an early lead going two up and very nearly three. I then got my game together and went ahead 5-2. I relaxed too much and Nick came back to 5-5 having saved quite a few match points along the way. I just about managed to break the momentum and take the last two sets. A great match. Thanks.

Player Comments:

  • "A good match that I didn't have all my own way. Chris definitely has the best first serve in this group. He hit a number of aces in the first set but couldn't quite get the consistency right to do it often enough. In the second set he took an early lead going 2 up with some really good serving. We had some close games with good rallies, but I managed to restrict the errors and pulled it back. Chris was maybe put off by his coach playing on the adjacent court! I don't think he was watching for the best of his serves either! Thanks."  -- Sean

There was a brief period with some fairly strong rain too. Ashling showed glimpses of an impressive first serve that was as good as any I've faced in this league. With a few more games under her belt she'll be challenging this group. Thanks. Sean"  -- Sean

  • "An evenly matched competitive game played in two sessions over about 3 hours. Rob took the first with little in it. I took a nasty fall towards the end of the set and nearly threw the towel in. I persevered and managed to take the second set. We attempted a third but lost the light. We continued a few days later with a really close third set. We countered each other's game effectively taking it to tie break that we finished just before the park was locked. Visibility was poor but we were both keen to wrap it up. Always a good game against Rob. Thanks." Sean

The first set was long and decided by a close tiebreak. The second Dees was on top with a switch in tactics. We had to finish the third a couple of days later in the evening. Unfortunately for Michael with a lack of practice and with fatigue, this really affected his game in the final set and overall result.  Well done Michael and thanks for a brilliant match."  -- Alan

  • "A hard fought match which was evenly balanced throughout. Gary played some amazing rallies, chasing down every ball, often winning points with his persistence and was rewarded with the first set tie breaker. We then played at least 10 deuce points in the 1st game of the second set which might have been a key turning point in the match. I sensed fatigue had started to kick in for Gary and I took advantage by keeping up the pressure to win the next two sets. This was Gary's first match after returning from holiday and I think was a factor in the final score. Thanks for the game Gary and I hope you won in the football match after :o"  -- Alan

When we adjourned I was 3-1 up in the second set but Tony took the next three games when we met to continue. But I held my nerve and got over the line. Either set could have gone the other way. Thanks Tony for a highly enjoyable match."  -- Stephen
  • "A great way to finish off this campaign. Today was the continuation of a match that was left standing a fortnight ago because of torrential rain, with the score standing at 7-6, 3-1, 30 all in Stephen's favour. I was feeling pretty motivated this morning and before long I had got ahead to 4-3 and then 5-4. However, Stephen then got his game together and moved to 6-5 before I levelled to trigger another tie-breaker. John then fought back well, winning 6 in a row to take the set. A fight back looked on the cards again in the decider as John came from 5-1 down to 5-3 but I managed to hold on. Well played"  -- James
Reveal CommentJim Knowler bt Paul Green (Sep 2) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Paul and I missed playing each other in a previous group, and it was great to meet up today and play. A match with several deuces, and some great first serves from Paul that slide out wide and open the court up for him. Paul fought back very hard in the 2nd game and constantly put on the pressure, changing tactics a couple of times to keep me guessing, mixing up long looping balls with short/low slices and attacking very well at the net. The score does not reflect how close it really was. It was pleasure to finally meet Paul today, and a very enjoyable evening playing tennis. "  -- Jim

  • "A great game with some long rallies. Pak has a deceptive serve that gave him a couple of easy Aces. The score doesn't tell the whole story, there were several deuces and many close games. A really enjoyable Sunday morning with some fun tennis and a nice chat. Thanks Pak!"  -- Jim

  • "Great game, very tight points and a lot of fun to play. Ant is fantastic at getting everything back and making you work doubly hard to win every point. We played the match over three sets in the evening, with just the first set taking over an hour and a half. We only just finished before the sunset, Well played Ant, and I hope I am fitter before playing you again!"  -- Jim
Reveal CommentPaul Green bt Antonio Russo (Aug 23) 6-3, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "A well fought match played in the dwindling light of a summers evening. Ant went ahead in the first set going 2-0 up. I pulled it back and won the next five with Ant grabbing a game before I won the first set. The second set went with serve all the way til the end and playing in almost unplayable darkness held on to win the tie-break. Thanks for a great game Ant"  -- Paul

Reveal CommentAntonio Russo bt John Critchley (Aug 19) 6-7, 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This was a real war of attrition, played in the middle of Storm Bromley that was tearing inexorably through Croydon Road recreation ground at the time of the match. The blustery conditions made it very difficult down one end. Notwithstanding, there was some great tennis in the first set. Initial games were exchanged, I managed to get ahead at 5-3 before John came back strongly and took the set to a tiebreak. John played good tennis in the tiebreak and won it 7-3. The second set was another close affair. After winning a key game at 4-4 I managed to take the set 6-4. Buoyed by this I went on to win the 3rd set. Thanks for a hard-fought match John, good luck with your games. "  -- Antonio

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAntonio Russo bt Pak Ling Wan (Aug 12) 7-6, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was one of the most gruelling matches I've played, brilliant fight from both players from the first point to the last. First set was nip and tuck, hardly anything between us both, before being settled 7-4 to me in a tiebreak. Pak came back strongly in the 2nd set to go 5-0 up, I brought it back to 5-4 before Pak closed the set out at 6-4. With both players exhausted the 3rd set was a slog, and at 3-3 I just about managed to get ahead and take the set. Thanks for the game Pak. All played to the backdrop of the David Bowie tribute event at the Recreation Ground, which was nice."  -- Antonio

Player Comments:

  • "A very close and enjoyable match played in varying conditions. The first set had a lot of duce games and a number of breaks of serve each. Neither of us gave up and it ended up going to a tie break which Peter won 7-3. I managed to get an early break in the second and kept the momentum going to make it one set apiece. I got another early break in the 3rd and was leading 5-2 at one point. Peter saved two match points to make it 5-3 and then saved a further two to make it 5-4. At this point I thought the momentum had shifted but thankfully I got another match point which I managed to take to win the 3rd set and the match.
