By the third set we were in energy conservation mode - the unseasonally hot weather became a factor, with us both having to take extra time to recover from some good, long rallies. Both of us struggled with our service the first couple of games in the second set but I managed to find my consistency before Lee and finished strong. The lead changed hands for the next few games but I managed to see out the set 6-4. I won the the first game in the second set but Malcolm stepped up another gear and went 3-1 and 4-2 up. This set was heading Malcolm's way and I didn't fancy a 3rd set so I dug in and clawed my way back into the set and focussed on winning a point at a time. By doing this i brought the set to a tie break where I went 4-1 up but back came Malcolm to bring it to 5-5. I managed to win the next 2 points to seal a 7-5 win. Player Comments:

  • "this was an enjoyable and tense match with a lot of games going to deuce, sometimes prolonged deuces we were playing on the hottest day so far this year and on a court without an inch of share. I put everything into winning the tie-breaker but once that was over, I felt totally spent and over-heated I took a decision that it would be dangerous for me to continue playing in those conditions"  -- Tony
