Collapse AllCambridge Singles - Round 14 | Thursday 2 May 2019 to Wednesday 26 June 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 29 May 2019)

70 percent of all the possible matches were played in this round showing once again that the Cambridge League is one of the top performers of all our leagues nationwide. What's more, judging from the commentaries everyone is really enjoying the friendly rivalries the league brings. Fantastic effort all. Keep up the good work and do spread the word.

Group Summary:

Sam did all he could to make it two group one wins in a row, edging ahead of third-placed Marcos on points, but Janez was in determined mood on his return to the league. Their own match was one of the best of the round, a tough three-setter that took a couple of sessions to complete. But eventually it, like the round, went Janez's way. Well done to the new champ and the chasing pack.

Group Summary:

Sixth placed this time, Christopher took the eventual champ the distance in a "bloody tight and exhausting" match and that pretty much sums up the strength and depth of the field in Group 2 this time. Yet despite the competition, Jake managed somehow to maintain an unbeaten record and just staying ahead of runner-up Victor who like Christopher (and Antoine, Paul and Simon!) had taken Jake to three sets. What an exhilarating group - we hope it was as much fun to play in as to watch from afar!

  • "A real thriller and thoroughly enjoyable match. Played on the blue Leys school courts which is a great venue with a bit more room behind the baseline than Christ's Pieces. The first set went almost completely against serve but I just clinched it by holding my serve at the end. Simon dominated the second set, then continued to a commanding 3-1 lead in the final set. Five games straight - with Simon visibly tiring - in the last set finally gave me the victory. Both serving well, we had some wonderful rallies with lots of lobs, volleys and passing shots. Group Summary:

A fantastic debut performance from Alexander who played excellent tennis and showed he was no slouch when it came to scheduling and playing his matches. Bonus points safely in the bag he completed the round with a full-house of wins. Not that it was all plain sailing and Ognyan, Apostolo and Rasmus each took their matches to three sets. In the battle for silver Rasmus prevailed but it will be Alexander heading up the table next time.

Group Summary:

Every point counted in this group and Gaetano maxed his chances of winning by playing one more match than his rivals. So, although Fabio and Rodrigo both beat the champ, they couldn't reach his points tally. Closest to toppling him was runner up John and he could have come a point closer if his match with Tim had been concluded. This was "a bitter and rancorous match" he told us before alleviating our worries and admitting, "only joking - we had a great, fun match." Phew. What a terrible group everyone. (Only joking - it was one of the best!)

Group Summary:

Make way for a new champ as Kate cleared a path through doughty competition to win a group on her first attempt. Saphsa kept up the pressure but lost their head-to-head and couldn't quite match Kate for overall wins. Colin, like Kate and Saspha, earned his bonus points and that helped him to a creditable bronze. But spare a thought for Jon, the only player to beat Kate. He finished undefeated with four wins - a few more matches and this group just might have been his. Well done everyone, an excellent group to anchor the round.
