Player Comments:

  • "It's been four years since I played John in the leagues, and after losing my last six matches in straight sets in the league my heart sank when I saw he'd not aged at all. Good fun competitive game in glorious sunshine, John took an early lead in both sets with fine whipped forehand cross court winners. I edged a few deuce games and then improved my serving near the end to get a couple of aces in. Really enjoyed the game, cheers John"  -- Stuart

Player Comments:

  • "Great to see Paul back in leagues , he’s hasn’t played for over a year so he was a bit rusty in first set, few unforced errors which I won 6-2. Second set and I was 5-2 up and then Paul found his rhythm and before you know it was 6-6 and playing for a tie breaker in which Paul won easy. Final set and again great rallies but I just edged it , but no doubt Paul’s game will improve with more games .. good luck in your future games mate. "  -- Matthew

  • "Lovely day at the Heath, I’ve played Stuart many times and we’ve always had great games. Stuart has a very good drop shot which he usually brings to the courts but this time he didn’t, (lucky me lol) I felt I had control in most of the game, there was plenty of rallies but it nice to beat my nemesis again. Good luck in future games mate. "  -- Matthew

  • "Evening game at the Heath , we’ve played many times in past me and John and it was good game as always , excellent rallies .. first set I played well and won 6-2. Second set and John unleashed his forehand with lovely spin and was up 4-2 , he also had some chances to go ahead 5-2 but the net stopped him unfortunately, but I bounced back and luckily I pulled it back 6-4. Good luck in future games mate, watch out for Stuart’s drop shots lol "  -- Matthew

Player Comments:

  • "A good battle down at the Heath. I started consistently and took the first set. Kev changed tactics in the 2nd and did same very efficient serve/volley and net rushing which setup the decider. It was getting late by this time and we were both feeling the effects of the weekend that had just passed, therefore it would be a case of who kept the error count down. I raced to a 4-0 lead, until Kevin clawed it back to 5-2, then 5-4. At this point we were both battling the daylight but agreed to carry on. I managed to serve out on the second time of asking but was hanging on to be honest. Some great rallys, passing shots and volleys on display from both of us. Already looking forward to another 3-setter with Mr Birt."  -- Rhys

Player Comments:

  • "A late evening game at Heath Park. Rhys performed well in the first set, taking two games with some impressive forehand drives. I tried to keep to Rhys's backhand in the second set but even so, Rhys played some great winning shots and there were lots of competetive ralleys which are not reflected in the score. Thanks for a friendly and enjoyable game Rhys, and all the best in your remaining matches."  -- Darren
Reveal CommentKevin Birt bt Paul Martin (May 8) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Perfect day at Heath park for an early game. The score isn’t a fair reflection of how good Paul is, especially for a guy that only started playing last year. Paul was quick around the court and got some shots back that I thought were winners. He also hit some winners that left me spectating. It mainly came down to unforced errors in the end. Good game, good luck in your others "  -- Kevin

Player Comments:

  • "Hurrah!!! I finally beat my nemesis David Tumulty. We've played a few times before and Dave has always won. I never feel he should and always get really annoyed. :-) Somehow he's always managed to keep getting the ball back. Not today however. The first set was relatively comfortable although I could never quite relax. The second set Dave was more consistent in his returns and I was less consistent with mine. I managed to hold it together to win the second set on a tiebreak even if it did take 2hours and 20mins altogether. Thanks for a good game Dave."  -- Anne

Reveal CommentDarren Bellamy bt Matthew Savage (May 6) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "I knew this was going to be a tough match. Matts game had received some rave reviews from league 1 (I can speak from experience that it's not easy to take a set off the Cloud), and with improvement highly likely it was essential to be quick off the blocks. At 5-0 up in the first set the plan was going swimmingly well. Then suddenly Matts game clicked into place. My usual defensive style of lobbing the ball back into play was failing miserably as Matt plucked my shots out of the air and smashed them back to me with enough power they could have ended up in the Brewhouse Pub beer garden. I scraped through the set 6-4 and somehow won the second in a close game. Not sure the result will be the same next time. Thanks Matt and all the best."  -- Darren

  • "Enjoyable and friendly game with Anne. A comfortable enough first set led me into a false sense of security. Anne has a really good understanding of the game and changed tactics in the second set which stopped the flow of my game. A couple of clever tactical changes had me worried for a bit but I managed to see the set out. Good luck in your games."  -- Kevin

  • "It seemed like it was really warm at 9am at Heath, but I think it was just that we ran a lot as my car said it was only 11°C. Very consistent play from Paul meant the first set was really close but I was able to take the second more comfortably. Thanks Paul for an enjoyable run around ."  -- Anne

Reveal CommentDarren Bellamy bt Anne Hamilton (Apr 28) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A pleasant morning for tennis at Sofia Gardens. Despite losing the first set 6-1, Anne made a great comeback in the second with some formidable groundstrokes. After serving an ace that even Dave Tumelty would struggle to get a racket to, she deservedly moved 2-1 ahead. It was just a lack of consistency that enabled me to take the set after a great match. Many thanks Anne and good luck in your remaining matches."  -- Darren
Reveal CommentDarren Bellamy bt David Tumulty (Apr 27) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "I last played Dave in June 2017. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. In my case, a lot of food and beer has passed under that bridge too, but not so Dave. He is still as lean and fit as I remember him, getting to every ball and making me work hard for every point. Despite my creaking bones and heavy breathing I managed to win in a similar scoreline to when we last met 5 years ago. Not much changes after all. We both agreed if ever there was a veterans league for the over 50s - we would be hard to beat! Thanks for the enjoyable game Dave, and hope we get to play again before 2027. Good luck in your remaining matches"  -- Darren

  • "Really friendly game with David at Heath Park. The wind proved difficult and David admitted that he found it hard to find to rhythm to his game in the first set and had a few more unforced errors than me. The second set I was 4-1 up and comfortable but then David found that rhythm with consistent shots, some great rallies and fewer mistakes and it was quickly 4-4. I managed to get myself together enough to take the set down. Good game and good luck in your others."  -- Kevin

Player Comments:

  • "Very close tense match. Me and Dean took a 4-1 lead after scraping through long games of multiple deuces. Rhodri and iestyn came back to win 4 games in a row playing some brilliant tennis. Somehow we managed to steal the next 3 games to take the first set. The 2nd set we raced into a 4-1 lead but again they came back to 4-4. Then again very nervously we clinched the next 2 games to take the match. Some very good rallies with some very classy play from both Rhodri and iestyn. One negative to whole occasion was after losing the first set Rhodri in a temper decided to hit 4 balls at me and refused to apologise when requested by his partner. This is definitely not tennis or indeed how tennis should be played! DB😜👊"  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "We played at Cardiff Met, and we all knew each other well having played doubles together all winter. This was a long match and thus we had to settle for a championship tie-break at the end to decide the outcome of the match. Both Steve and Catherine are consistent players and have a good all-round game. We were all pretty nervous at the beginning, probably because this was the first time we had truly played competitively against each other. The sets were long drawn out affairs, and was no surprise that the second went to a set tie-break, which Steve and Cath duly won. This was a match where momentum swung from one team to the other. On another day they could have won - thanks, and good luck with the remainder of your matches. "  -- Rhodri
