- "Mike is a brilliant all rounder with one of the most consistent and sturdy back hands ive played against. I really enjoyed the back hand exchanges, me going for slice and mike using top spin felt like a battle of sword vs shield. He would have won had he not played earlier that morning against Owen the road runner. But because of the fatigue he lost the second set when his legs gave up and he forfeited the third. I really look forward to future games with him and hope he remains insane enough to play Owen beforehand... Else I'm done for." -- Barney
Player Comments:
- "Kevin is a great player who has come on leaps and bounds. I'm usually the aggressor in games but he kept me pinned to the baseline doing defensive slices and on the run. The first set was brilliant. The second set could have been very different had he locked in a forehand cross court shot he's usually great at. Thanks for a cracking game!" -- Barney
Player Comments:
- "One of the toughest singles league matches I have ever had to play against someone who I always find very tricky to play against. I lost count the number of deuce games we had, it really did come down to who won the crucial points! I was very lucky to have won the 1st game after facing 2 break points at 15-40. The 1st break point I saved was with a net cord and the 2nd was with an uncharacteristically unforced error at the net from Barney. There were plenty of long epic rallies and there were a couple of times I just had to applaud Barney for some of the ridiculous points he won! As we all know, Barney is really quick around the court, so I had to come out my comfort zone at times by coming to the net. Thanks for a great match Barney!" -- Owen
Player Comments:
- "What an epic match this was with my very good mate Jeff. Our matches go either way and this one ebbed and flowed in all directions like all our others. 6-1 down in the first set and I was in serious trouble with Jeff simply bossing me. Second set it all was change taking the set 6-4. Then on to third set. Game plan kicked in and I found myself 3 up and thought this is working well. Only to then play at 4-3 down with a fab comeback by my mate. In a lot of our games we found both ourselves 40-0 up only to then find the other clawing back the advantage to go on and take the game. Then we’re at 5 a piece and we both go a little cagey with our games looking for that winner. Ended up at 7-5 final set. One of the most enjoyable game" -- Paul
Player Comments:
- "One week after my match with Jeff on the clay, I stepped on the very same court, but this time it was Paul, another true gentleman from Rhiwbina Tennis Club, on the other side of the net. I saved a couple of break points on my opening serve. Very clever play from Paul, who wrong-footed me plenty of times! It was difficult to know where he was going to hit the ball. We had a short break after the 1st set to shelter from the rain. The 2nd set was tougher, with Paul changing his tactics. I had to work very hard to get a 5-1 lead. But Paul won the next 2 games and was serving at 3-5. I was fortunate to be able break him and get the win because if that was 1st set then I was going to be in a lot of trouble! Thanks for an enjoyable game Paul :-)" -- Owen
Player Comments:
- "Rarely do you finish a game & genuinely think your opponent probably deserved to win. Jeff was playing better tennis, he was hitting more winners, only 1 double fault & had me running more than anyone has in a while & at full stretch too much for my liking. Jeff raced to a 4-1 lead & I managed to get back to a tiebreak just to lose 7-2. Jeff hit some beastly forehand’s into the corner. the wind played havoc when accompanied by Jeff’s sliced backhand. A bit of momentum & a slight change in tactic allowed me to sneak the 2nd set. Then due to the time we elected to play a tiebreak in the 3rd set. First time I’ve done this & I was apprehensive but managed to win this with an epic final point where a full stretch volley won the match. Gg" -- Kevin
Player Comments:
- "Having only played Jeff at doubles down at Rhiwbina, I was really looking forward to taking him on at singles. Great weather conditions: dry, warm and no sun to worry about not being able to see what is happening on the court properly. With Jeff being able to chase down my sneaky drop shot serves and defend really well, it was hard for me to hold my service games. Plenty of winners and smart play by Jeff which got me running around and having to work hard for each point. A very tricky player indeed! One of those players that you cannot relax against regardless of the score, so it was a relief for me when the last point was finished! Thanks for a very enjoyable match Jeff. One of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. 4 net cords from Jeff :-(" -- Owen
Player Comments:
- "Really friendly and fair game with Paul played in good spirits. ‘Nip n tuck’ is the only way to describe the 1st set. It was only the lottery of the tie break that separated us. There is no weak side to Paul’s game which took me a while to learn. His forehand and backhand are equally effective , hitting some powerful and precise winners. Paul has a great 1st and 2nd serve which I learnt the hard way when he almost aced me on his first 2nd serve. I’d like to say that I won the 2nd set convincingly from some clever tactic but Paul doesn’t allow you to play much in the way of tactics, instead it was mainly about momentum and possibly a few more errors from paul and a bit more confidence from me. A enjoyable game, good luck." -- Kevin
Player Comments:
- "It is always a pleasure to play against Kevin. He is such a nice guy who has improved a lot. Sunny and dry conditions, which is something we have not seen for quite a while! A bit of a nervy start for Kevin as he served 3 consecutive double faults in the 1st game, which gifted me the game. Plenty of deuce games and amazing defending by Kevin. One of the best defending I have ever seen on 1 or 2 points where Kevin kept getting back my smashes like a magician! Heartbreakingly, I lost those points, but I had to applaud Kevin! It was 3-1 for the net cords in my favour, 1 or 2 being on game points, which helped, sorry Kevin! Thanks for a great game and I hope you managed to break out of the escape room, as I want to play against you again!" -- Owen

- "When my alarm woke me up at 7am this morning I blurrily opened my eyes and tried to remember why on earth I'd set it so early on a saturday morning. Then it all came back to me. An 8am match versus Davide, against whom I struggled to beat in 3-set 2 hour league 1 marathon last year. A guy who runs for everything, with great reflexes, who never gives up and would be up for revenge. In hindsight the 8am start was a good plan, as I desperately tried to finish it off in two sets knowing full well that the longer the match continued and the temperatures rose - the more the game would move in Davides favour. A tough but very enjoyable and friendly match. Many thanks Davide and hope we get to play again some time soon." -- Darren

- "George and I were both a bit hungover from the Eurovision party the night before. Our tennis was a bit like the United Kingdom performance. Started energetically enough but fell flat towards the end with a few errors here and there. Still - we beat Germany. Thanks George and all the best for your remaining matches." -- Darren

- "Great to meet Mike for a very friendly game and I found it fascinating listening to him about what scientific breakthroughs the next 10 years will hold in the NHS!. The score doesn't reflect the number of good rallies we had and there were a couple of opportunities where Mike could have won a game. All the best for your remaining matches and good luck with your career - we are all depending on you!!" -- Darren
Player Comments:
- "An enjoyable and friendly match, Dave was out of the blocks swiftly taking an early 3-2 lead with some fine service games. Thankfully, with the blinding sun and a reasonable breeze, todays conditions probably suited my defensive game more than Daves serve / volley, and although most games were close, my consistency improved in the second set. Onwards and upwards. Thanks Dave and all the best for your remaining matches." -- Darren

- "Nice to get a win playing some decent tennis again after an awful season for me. Credit goes to Jo however who is in his first group campaign and he will have gained some good experience from this especially fighting hard in the second set. Keep going Jo, the competitive nature will rub off and you will be able to play your shots. Good luck and thanks for an enjoyable game" -- Patrick

- "Great to play Pat again. Good fair sportsman. A pleasure to play. I think he’ll admit to being a little off form in the game but showed what he can do in the friendly third set where he left me stand still with top spin winners into both corners of the court. Time to let the winners loose in your next match Pat. Good luck! " -- John

- "I don't want to come over all Jimmy Greaves, but it was very much a game of two halves. Joe deservedly won the first set (I was lucky even to get to a tie-break), but then momentum somehow shifted. It's certainly a funny old game. It was a pleasure to meet you Joe, I'll look forward to when we play again. " -- Michael

- "Great weather for tennis, Nice to meet and play Dave, we had a very competitive match, with nice rallies, his defensive style of play doesn't meet my style and made me to go for my shots and also risked to do lots of unforced errors, well played Dave hope we can play again in the future " -- Diomid
Player Comments:
- "One of the best matches in a while, with a similar style of play we played some great tennis, some aces, lots of winers, also some amazing rallies, With close games and lots of deuces the match could go easily the other way, Fabio is a great player Well played, looking forward to playing again" -- Diomid

- "Great to meet Joe! Showed great sportsmanship and always stayed positive throughout the game. The final score is a bit heavy on Joe, considering some of the my serve games went to deuce and Joe had a couple of break points that could have gone his way. Very quick player on the court and will always try and get to every ball! Great morning of tennis! Good luck for the rest of your games Joe! Fábio" -- Fabio
Player Comments:
- "Good game with David who did well considering it was his first game of the new season. David's strength is endurance and making sure the ball comes back. Those tactics worked in the first set going all the way to a tie break. I admire how David stuck in and especially the second set playing more aggressive and gaining some nice winning shots. Good luck for the rest of the league. I think this is a tough group for group 3." -- Patrick

- "Jiani got off to a good start with some very consistent shots to take an early lead. I was 0-2 down and almost went went 0-3 but found a way to see the first set out, had some very long rallies which was tiring for us in rhe hot weather. 2nd set was more straightforward for me but I still had to fight for a lot of points with some tenacious play and a never say die attitude from us both. Thanks for the match Jiani and good luck in your next one!" -- Matthew

- "A topsy-turvy Turvey match on a very warm and sunny day. Lots of deuce games in the 1st set with Tim much stronger and then got off to a good start in the 2nd and managed to carry that momentum on. Played a tie break instead of a 3rd set as we were short on time, just edged that. Thanks for another enjoyable game Tim and see you next time!" -- Matthew

- "Lovely to meet and play with Jiani in the sun. It is Jianis first league appearance and is very new to tennis. Her work schedule gives her limited time to play, so joining the league is to help her meet and playing more people. Jiani started very well, moving me around the court, whilst I was totally shapeless and feeling tired in the first set. Thankfully I got it togther and recovered from 5-1 down to win the first set. The second set my play improved. Good luck for the rest of the games Jiani. " -- Nigel
