Reveal CommentEdward Donovan bt Kevin Birt (May 9) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The score didn't reflect the closeness of the games, alot went to multiple deuces with some good long rallies and exchanges at the net."  -- Edward
Reveal CommentMark Baxter bt Matthew Blake (May 9) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Matthew (Chukka) stuffed me last year but struggled uncharacteristically during the first set today, but a cunning change of rackets and change of approach proved useful for him during the whole of the second set. His ferocious smash from the back of the court left me floundering like a flat fish at times. On one game, I must have had at least 20 juices (not barley water), back and forwards it went in an energy sapping game. Ever the sportsman and ever gracious in defeat. Thanks buddy ! I love your never say die attitude (just like Stu !) Good luck with the rest of the games. Baxter"  -- Mark
Reveal CommentOwen Morris bt Stuart McLeod (May 9) 6-1, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "An extremely tough match against Stuart, who has improved significantly. I took the 1st set 6-1, but there were many deuces games and he had some missed opportunities. In set 2, Stuart was down 15-40 giving me 2 chances to go up the early break. On my 1st chance, my heart broke when Stuart won the point with a net cord. On my 2nd chance, he courageously hit a drive volley that was simply too good. After what felt like an eternity, he won the game. Stuart raised his level and won the set 6-4. I lead 2-0 in the 3rd set. But Stuart won the next 4 games to lead 4-2. An increase in unforced errors from him allowed me to take the next 4 very hard-fought games to win the 3rd set 6-4. I was very lucky his level had dropped slightly towards the end."  -- Owen
Reveal CommentOwen Morris bt Edward Donovan (May 2) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "I had been warned to expect a physical battle, and this was certainly the case. Getting the ball pass Edward is almost impossible, resulting in many long exhausting rallies. He makes you work hard for every point and even when I was ahead, I always felt he can just bounce back. Edward started strongly in the 1st set, comfortably holding his serve and was 40-15 up on my serve. But a couple of unforced errors from Edward gave me the game. I eventually took the set 6-2. Most games were really close which I was fortunate to win. The set really could have gone either way! The 2nd set was the same. Many close games that I was lucky to win. Unfortunately, the score does not reflect how close the match really was! Thank you for the game Edward."  -- Owen
Reveal CommentOwen Morris bt Matthew Blake (May 1) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Matthew has improved a lot since our encounter 2 years ago. Matthew raced to a 2-0 lead and after many crushing forehands which I was simply too powerless against, Matthew was 5-3 40-40 up. I somehow managed to win that game. Matthew then unfortunately played his worst service game of the match, starting with a double fault followed by unforced errors which gifted me the game. Due to Matthew’s superb defence and crushing forehands I knew I had to risk playing more offensive to stand a chance. Fortunately for me, the risk paid off and I clinched the set 7-5. I really went for my shots in the 2nd set, but Matthew was impressively getting my shots back! The 2nd set was 6-3 but it was another tight set! I was very lucky to get through this one!"  -- Owen
Reveal CommentStuart McLeod bt Mark Baxter (Apr 27) 6-7 (7-9), 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Kevin and Mark H-J were slugging out their deciding set on an adjacent court when myself and Mark B turned up. An image of two legendary warriors fighting to the death sprang to mind. I have absolutely no idea why. Baxter started slowly, allowing me to race into a 4-0 lead. Things changed soon after once he got his forehand firing moving my fat little legs all over the court. At 5-4 down in the second set time was running out for me. I managed to pinch the set after 3 games of energy sapping rallies. The last, I got the better of the deuce games. Exhausting but really enjoyable game. Thanks Mark"  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentMark Howell-Jones bt Kevin Birt (Apr 27) 3-6, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great spirited game on a beautiful sunny day. A close exchange in the first set saw Kevin edge it with consistency, classy volleying and endless retrieving. Another close 2nd set saw me change my game plan to be more consistent and force more mistakes which continued in the 3rd set. A good close match which could have easily gone Kevin's way. Thanks for the match and good luck in your remaining games. 👍😀"  -- Mark
Reveal CommentMark Howell-Jones bt Mark Baxter (Apr 26) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A gorgeous evening at penarth lawn tennis club. A very close competitive match enjoyed in good spirits. Mark played some lovely shots throughout and chased down just about everything I threw at him. Thank you Mark for an enjoyable match and good luck in your remaining games. 😀👍"  -- Mark
Reveal CommentKevin Birt bt Matthew Blake (Apr 25) 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Well it was always going to be a good match against Matt but I didn't expect this score line! As always it was really friendly and really competitive with some great rallies with both of us ‘trapped at the net’ at times and some very hard earned points. I was 5-1 down in the first but still really enjoying it as it was a good match. I fought back to the tie break but Matt comfortably won that. Then the momentum shifted and I managed to pick up the next 2 sets. It came largely down to confidence in the end I felt & momentum, Matt was serving great & always dangerous at the net. Most shots were coming back but Matts dangerous forehand wasn't fully firing today. Thanks for a really enjoyable game Matt ,good luck in the rest."  -- Kevin
Edward Donovan bt Matthew Blake (Apr 24) 6-3, 6-0
Reveal CommentEdward Donovan bt Mark Howell-Jones (Apr 21) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great to be back playing again, a closely contested match with some nice play on both sides."  -- Edward
Reveal CommentStuart McLeod bt Matthew Blake (Apr 18) 7-5, 0-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great to be back on court against my old nemesis Matthew in brilliant sunshine. Matthew raced away in the first set to 4-0 and had a set point at 5-2 before a few errors crept into his game. Matthew destroyed me in the second set with great serving and crunching forehands hitting all the lines. I didn't even win a point till the fourth game. In the decider Matthew's level dropped off to my relief. Great game pal."  -- Stuart

Player Comments:

  • "Really good meeting and playing with Darren today! When I heard and read the article and say the words ‘human wall’ I wasn’t quite sure what to think! It’s definitely true and a very hard player to break down, literally everything comes back. Disrupted slightly with wind and rain but managed to power through. My forehand down the line winners just had the edge over the return slices. Well played Darren, look forward to playing you again mate! Really good match."  -- Josh
Reveal CommentJohn Archer bt Michael Sherlock (May 9) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really good match against a good player. A win is surely around the corner for Michael. Good luck in your remaining matches."  -- John
Reveal CommentJosh Cain bt Matthew Owen (May 4) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely to meet Matthew today! Wind played a big factor in some of the game, especially service."  -- Josh
Reveal CommentPaul Tyack bt Darren Bellamy (May 4) 6-3, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Tyack and Bellamy resumed their rivalry after on a blustery morning at Sophia Gardens. Bellamy was out of the traps fastest, racing into a 3-0 lead. Bellamy's service then faltered, his difficulty with his 1st serve in compounded by Tyack attacking his 2nd serve and taking the set. This pattern continued into the second set, with both players struggling to find any rhythm in the wind. At 5-2 in the second, Tyack was heading for a rare comfortable win, when Bellamy came roaring back, fending off 4 match points as he went. The set went to the inevitable tie break and again, Bellamy seemed dead and buried at 1-5 as they changed ends. Again he responded and in the blink of an eye it was 5-5 before Tyack eventually closed out at 7-5. "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentPaul Tyack bt Martin Riley (Apr 28) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great to get back to the Tennis League after a couple of years on the sidelines. I had few mis-hits and errors, but nothing too drastic. Martin and I played on the lovely clay courts at Rhiwbina, which weren't effected at all by a drizzly morning. I think the score doesn't indicate how close the match was, with Martin having several game points and deuces that didn't go his way. Martin is a real gentleman and the match was played in the very best of spirits with a bit of friendly chat between games. Thanks a lot, Martin. All the best for the rest of your matches."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentDarren Bellamy bt Michael Sherlock (Apr 25) 3-6, 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • " Michael kindly invited me to the artificial courts at the plush Celtic Manor Hotel Resort and Spa. The brochure said legends such as Pat Cash, Henri Laconte, Goran Ivanisevich and Peter Fleming had graced these courts with victory - could it be possible that Darren Bellamy would be added to this illustrious list? After losing the first 3 games and ultimately the first set after some impressive serves and backhand drives from Michael, it looked unlikely. I was beginning to wonder if I should swap the tennis racket for golf clubs, or maybe a spa pass, when my serve improved, and in true ' human wall' style, Michaels error count began to exceed the number of times I had to loop the ball back over the net. Thanks very much for the game."  -- Darren
Reveal CommentJohn Archer bt Josh Cain (Apr 23) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Josh hit the ball great in warm up and the knock after. As soon as he finds that form in a match, he’ll be a very tough opponent! Great to meet you. Good luck in the rest of your matches."  -- John
Reveal CommentJohn Archer bt Darren Bellamy (Apr 16) 6-2, 6-2

Reveal CommentOllie Stockdale bt Kenton Friedl (May 3) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great game with Kenton, great bloke both enjoyed the game despite bad conditions. Close first set 4-4 and 30-30 at one point could of gone either way. 2nd set much more one sided. Wish Kenton luck in all his remaining games sure he will do well!"  -- Ollie

Reveal CommentJames Saunders bt Nigel Kirby (Apr 25) 7-5, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great game with Nigel at Heath Park. Nice to play in the sunshine, but it was a bit gusty at times! Two really close sets that could have gone either way. Nigel deserved at least a point and it would have been a fairer reflection if we had been taken to a 3rd set decider. Thanks Nigel, nice to catch up with you again, good luck with the rest of your games. "  -- James
Reveal CommentKenton Friedl bt Nigel Kirby (Apr 22) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A fantastic afternoon of tennis in the sun at Victoria Park. A good game, enjoyed by both of us. I was worried in the second set as Nigel started to put me under pressure with some great service return winners. He found a good rhythm and was unlucky not to pinch the set. Good luck in the rest of your matches Nigel. "  -- Kenton

Player Comments:

  • "A great match to start the league. The first set was very close with Simon taking control of the set early but I was able to claw my way back into it. Simon managed to play the more consistent tennis to take the second set convincingly. Unforced errors began to creep in more and more in the third set which I was lucky to benefit more from. The match tested our fitness and was tightly contested throughout. Thanks for the game Simon. Good luck in the rest of your games."  -- Kenton

  • "It was great to play my first LTL match after the lockdown restrictions had been eased. It was a lovely evening, perfect for tennis. Matt started off slowly, and I was able to gain the upper hand in the first set. However, roles were reversed in the second set, as Matt found his length and strength of shot and fought back to take the set. I feared the worst for the final set, but I was able to find my game again and managed to come out on top. It was an enjoyable game and a close fought match. The 1st set went my way with Mark making alot of unforced errors and missing his first serves. The 2nd set how ever took a turn and Mark gained momentum with his 1st serves working well for him and rallying well. He went up 1-0 then I fought back to take the lead 1-2 and then he took the lead again at 4-3. We then tied at 5-5 and I was fortunate to break his serve and win my service game only after a very tight battle. Well-done today Mark it was a pleasure to play you and I wish you every success in your up and coming games. Hopefully play again soon buddy."  -- Bruno

He has not played for a few years but has good ability and skill out on the court and plays every shot with 100% conviction, but that comes with a risk and many unforced errors, which on this occasion went in my favour. Its only a matter of time before he finds his form and everyone better bring their A game - Thanks Matt and hope to play again. All the best in your other matches buddy. "  -- Bruno

  • "Wow. As a curtain-opener after lockdown I could have asked for something easier. As it turned out, the conditions were perfect: little wind, mostly sunny, just-right temperature... and an opponent who gave up on nothing. He is clearly a runner and chased down all my best shots, replying with little chips and spins that were always challenging. In the middle of the match, we both tired a bit and the serving was a bit unpredictable: I think at one time we had more service-breaks than holds. As it grew to a close, however, we were still very evenly matched and just slugged it out. There was very little in it, and it could have gone both ways. I am sorry sometimes that tennis can't end in a draw! Thank you Andy: I did have a great time!"  -- Tim

Reveal CommentTim Davies bt Christina Macaulay (Apr 18) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Christina was really helpful and patient going through all the rules and hints about the league. The courts were locked on our arrival at 10am, luckily Christina made a call to get them opened, so everyone may need to be mindful of this if playing early at Victoria Park. Thanks to Christina for a really enjoyable game. "  -- Tim
