This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Player Comments:

  • "Hard fought as always when you meet “the wall” A game played in blustery conditions but in a typically sportsman like way. Darren started strong and a really hard battle ensued but I managed to close out the first set with many long rallies and duces. At one stage Darren suggested he may need an ambulance ! The second set was just a little more straightforward but Darren never gives up and even on the last point of the last game was typically combative. Thanks Darren, a great workout and at last I managed to find a tiny crack in “The Wall” "  -- Mark
Reveal CommentAled Evans bt Jonathan Rifflart (Sep 9) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The scoreline doesn't reflect the match. We had some close games which nearly went jons way but I managed to sneak them. A really enjoyable competitive match. Good luck for the rest of your games!"  -- Aled
Reveal CommentDarren Bellamy bt Simon Rogers (Sep 8) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A damp evening at Sofia Gardens but a friendly and enjoyable game against Simon. The first set was very close with plenty of errors on both sides. In the second set I managed to get my serve going a bit better. Nevertheless the score didn't reflect how close the game was. Thanks for managing to get off work early so we could get this game in before lockdown. (I need all the points I can get!) Hope it all works out for you and we can play again soon."  -- Darren

  • "Really good couple of sets against an opponent who chased just about everything down, good game Baxter, thank you!! Fortunately I got the job done in 2 because Baxter won a social set at the end!! Hopefully play you again soon Baxter 👍🏻"  -- Simon
Reveal CommentJonathan Rifflart bt Stuart McLeod (Sep 5) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The score line might look commanding but it was far from that! Stu is such a tricky player and on another day I’m sure it would have been closer. Thanks for the game Stu!"  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentAled Evans bt Darren Bellamy (Sep 2) 7-6 (8-6), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The 1st set was so close with both of us having set points. Either of us could have won it. I was a bit more consistent in the 2nd set and managed to finally close it out after Darren saved about 8 match points! Don't think I've ever had to hit so many balls before to win a match, thanks for the game. "  -- Aled
Reveal CommentAled Evans bt Simon Rogers (Aug 26) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "An early break in the opening game was the only difference in the 1st set. Simon was serving well and missed some break points to get it back to 4-4. The 2nd set was just as close with both of us breaking serve. I struggled to control the ball at times when Simon was hitting it well. A really competitive match with not much between us, thanks Simon. "  -- Aled
Reveal CommentJonathan Rifflart bt Simon Rogers (Aug 24) 6-1, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "A really competitive match played in almost perfect conditions down at the Heath courts! I ran away with the first set as Simon was getting his eye in. The 2nd set was a lot more competitive and could have gone either way. Simons got such a tricky topspin serve- watch out for that!!! Thanks for the game Simon and good luck with your remaining matches."  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentAled Evans bt Owen Morris (Aug 23) 7-6 (7-3), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The first 8 games went with serve then I managed to sneak 2 breaks to go up 5-4 and 6-5 only for owen to break back to love each time. I managed to clinch the tiebreak to win a tight 1st set. Owen broke serve and held to go 2-0 up in the 2nd. After some long games I clawed it back to 2-2. I found my range and went 5-2 up with victory in sight, only for Owen to get it back to 5-4. He was 40-00 up on his serve and I had visions of another tiebreak in the back of my mind. I had to knuckle down and concentrate to sneak out the win. A really tough match, at times it felt that Owen knew where I was going to hit the ball before I did! Thanks for a great match."  -- Aled
Reveal CommentOwen Morris bt Mark Baxter (Aug 22) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Mark and I battled it out on the red dirt at Penarth Windsor. This was the first time ever that I set foot on a clay court, so was a bit nervous! Mark was 40-0 on his serve in the 1st game. Don’t ask me how, but I was able win that game and hold my serve to lead 2-0. Mark upped his game and won the next few games. Too many games went to deuce!!! and eventually it got to 4-4. After yet ANOTHER gruelling game I broke for a 5-4 lead, and after ANOTHER deuce game (seriously!?…) I won the set 6-4. I was 4-0 up in the 2nd and had break points to make it 5-0, but Mark’s superb fighting spirit was on full display and he fought back to 3-4. A few exhausting games later I was able to win the 2nd set 6-4. Thanks for the game Mark, true gentleman!"  -- Owen
Reveal CommentStuart McLeod bt Mark Baxter (Aug 17) 1-6, 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A close battle at the Heath in damp conditions. Early on it looked as though Mark would win in double quick time with an error free first set. I was playing ok, but was struggling with his whipped forehand as I did throughout the match. I managed to get my error count down in the 2nd set and the 3rd set could have gone either way. Thoroughly enjoyable game and a good workout. Cheers Mark."  -- Stuart

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for a great game Darren, it was too close to call in the 3rd set and I now realise why Darren has been called a wall in the past!!! No matter how well I hit the ball it kept coming back!!! I just managed to sneak the win in an exhausting match! Good luck with the rest of your games Darren"  -- Jonathan
Reveal CommentOwen Morris bt Darren Bellamy (Aug 9) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "It has been 212 days (not that I’m counting…) since my thrashing from the Wall. Since that heart-breaking day, revenge has been on my mind. After countless nights of sobbing into my pillow, I was ready to take on the Wall. The 1st set was close with many breaks of serves. The big moment for me was when Darren was serving at 3-4, 40-0, and I fought back to win the game and found myself serving for the set. But Darren would go on to win the next 2 games. I eventually won the set 7-5. In the 2nd set, I was able to relax a more and play more aggressively. There were so many shots that you think would be a winner, but would just come back to you… After losing a couple of match points, I was able to clinch the 2nd set 6-3 and hence the match."  -- Owen
Reveal CommentStuart McLeod bt Darren Bellamy (Aug 5) 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The human wall Bellamy has become larger and more imposing since lockdown, and he managed to come back from 4-1 down in games and 4-0 down in the tie-break to pinch the first set. Cracks began to show in the second, and his solid returning game eventually crumbled to dust after two hours"  -- Stuart

Reveal CommentSimon Botley bt Rhys Fidler (Sep 6) 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great game with Rhys and with the three week gap between the second and third set, it is definitely the longest match I’ve ever played! Many days ago the game got underway and I was behind throughout the first set, managing to cling on for a tie break, which I predictably crumbled in. The momentum switched in the second set, but that was the end of our time on court. So when we got back to it today Rhys had picked up a back injury that hampered his play, but it still went to 4-3 in the decider, before I managed to stumble over the line. All the best with the rest Rhys!"  -- Simon

Reveal CommentSimon Botley bt Rachel Lord (Aug 26) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Had a good game with Rachel at Heath Park as the weather finally chilled out a bit. I'm not really too sure how or why I won this game, Rachel is definitely the better player, but I guess that is the way tennis goes sometime. I went 3-0 up in the first only for Rachel to peg me back to 3-2, before another momentum shift allowed me to see out the first set. This set included Rachel landing one on my toe just beyond the baseline which I couldn't get out of the way of - great way to win a point! The second set was really tight and I was fortunate to be able to see it out from 4-4 when there was finally a breakthrough. On another day it goes the other way. All the best for the rest of your matches Rachel!"  -- Simon

Reveal CommentKevin Birt bt Rachel Lord (Aug 18) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Late game and the rain held off and the flood lights just about stayed on. Warming up I thought I was in trouble as Rach is clearly a better player than me (imo), big forehand, big backhand, big first serve and clearly very competent at the net. As the match got going we both tightened up a bit (as happens in league games) and it was a deep base line game, constantly applying pressure and trying to force and error. It simply came down to who made the most errors as we hit very very few winners between us. Today I made fewer errors on this occasion but I still feel Rach is a better player and on another day would have beaten me. Some really fun net points and a pleasure to play and meet. Good luck in the rest of your games."  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentMatthew Blake bt Rhys Fidler (Aug 18) 6-3, 6-3

Reveal CommentKevin Birt bt Simon Botley (Aug 9) 7-6 (7-2), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Hot hot day at Heath park. I found Simon to have a very relaxed approach to the game, which threw me off and I got totally sucked into this style of play. I trailed for the entire first set 2-0, 3-1, 5-4 and Simon had a set point that I managed to save. Something clicked then and I changed my approach and barely clinched the first set. The second set i continued with the same strategy and managed to win before I melted in the heat. Such a close game, especially when you consider Simon hasn’t played for a while. Another difficult group 2 match. Good luck."  -- Kevin

Reveal CommentMatthew Blake bt Rachel Lord (Aug 7) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The sun was out at heath courts at 9am , Rachel was just warming up her game in the first set, even tho it was 6-0 You can see the signs of her top spin and cross court shots just hitting out. But the second set starts and Rachel ups her game and before I knew it I’m 4-2 down, I really had to hit dig deep and get the shots back and push some winning shots in , luckily I pulled it back to a 6-4 win. Really good rallies and Rachel prob moved me around the court the most this season with the top spin, really enjoyed the game and Good luck in your future games Rach "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentKevin Birt bt Mark Howell-Jones (Aug 7) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A fantastic game with Mark, probably the most enjoyable so far in great conditions. We had a good laugh, loads of good points and rallies and Mark was an absolute gent. It was so close in the first set going game for game and facing Mark wicked serve and it was 4-4 in the first set but I just managed to clinch it. Second set went to 4-3 before I managed to see it off. Mark played a great service game and is a great natural all round player with some great all round shots in his range. Good luck in the rest of your games and thank you for such an enjoyable match. "  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentKevin Birt bt Michael Sherlock (Aug 5) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match against Michael who is probably the most capable player I have played so far this season. It was simply down to (his own admission) that he was a little rusty but sometimes a big serve, big forehand or backhand would come out to show his potential as a very good player. On a different day he would have beaten me so I was delighted to notch up this win in great conditions at Heath park. Good luck in your games Mike."  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentMatthew Blake bt Kevin Birt (Aug 2) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great to back playing tennis, nice day but there was strong breeze on the court. Me and Kevin have played against each other before , it was great game , good rallies but I think Kevin slightly made more errors and missed out on taking some advantage points. Good luck in your future games Kev. "  -- Matthew
  • "Great to play Matt again, Matt played the right strategy against me and made very few errors where I made too many. Enjoyable friendly match where Matt deserved to win. The strongest part of my game is my net play but I just couldn’t get it working today and lost 10+ points at the net which made it comfortable for Matt to play his game and beat me. Matt played good tennis, waited for his opportunities and got to almost everything. Well played mate and good luck in your games." -- Kevin
Reveal CommentKevin Birt bt Rhys Fidler (Aug 1) 6-3, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable match on a sunny and windy day in the Heath. We both played similar styles of tennis so I knew it would be a good match. After going 4-0 up in the first, Rhys switched gears and played a good deep baseline game and it was closer than I thought. The second set I went 3-1 up but lost memento whilst Rhys got stronger, bigger serve and all round play and deservedly won the 2nd set 6-4. I put my game head on for the last set and managed to see it off which was good as we were both starting to flag in this long hot match. Some fun points against a really nice bloke who I hope to play again. Glad to get a win under my belt in a competitive and enjoyable match. Good luck in the rest of your matches Rhys."  -- Kevin

The first set was a nail biter going to a tie-breaker - Martin's arsenal of spin shots kept me in a permanent state of confusion ;-) We had to call it a night after the first game in the second set due to rain. We were hoping to finish the match and had scheduled to play on 17th Sept. Unfortunately, because I live in RCT, I am now in lockdown again and we were unable to complete the match. Thanks Martin for some fun tennis and hopefully we will be able to play a full match in another time."  -- Chloe

  • "Really enjoyable match with Chloe. We were pretty evenly matched and the first set was a great battle, going all the way to a close tie break but either of us could have won the set. The second set score doesn't reflect the play, as several games went to deuce, but I was lucky enough to win on this occasion. Thanks for the great game Chloe, and best of luck in the rest of your games."  -- Kevin

  • "Great game with Steve on a glorious day in Cardiff. Steve started off a bit slowly and I was able to win the first set, if not comfortably, at least with a healthy margin. Second set was a different story. Steve had warmed up and was getting quite a few first serves in which made our games much more challenging. Thanks Steve for great game played in great spirit. • "Well, that was an excellent match - thanks Steve. In the first set Steve just couldn't get going, but in the second he began to get his first serve in on a regular basis, and really turned the match around. Each game in the third set was closely fought for, but I was able to win a few more of the key points and this helped me to close out the match. A great effort, considering that there was over 130 years of tennis veterans on the court! Well played Steve, and good luck in your future matches. I'm sure we will be seeing each other on a tennis court sometime in the future!"  -- Robert

I started well in each set, but Karen came back strongly each time and showed great stamina. I eventually saw out the two sets, but Karen's strong net play and angled shots had me rushing around the court for most of the match. Many thanks for the game Karen and all the best for your future matches. Cheers!"  -- Chris

Played in a great spirit - Sam is a very sporting and enjoyable opponent to play with. Best of luck in the rest of your games Sam."  -- Steve

  • "We picked up the match again on the Thursday evening and the conditions were better. I started strongly and played a good set, winning 6-1. We had some good rallies and close points during the set. Rob said he was a bit off his game in this set. We played a third friendly set and it was a good close set all the way through. We finished at 5-5 when the light faded. I think this set and the first set reflect our tennis a bit better. Close run games all the way through. Many thanks for the match Rob. Player Comments:

  • "Chris and I met at Hailey Park and were lucky to get a court straight away in the glorious sunshine. Chris got off to a great start and was shortly 3:0 up. I changed tactics at that point and managed to pull back to 4:2. Some close games followed and I was lucky to win the first set. I don't know if it.was running around in high temperatures but Chris struggled to find his previous form during the second set and shots that were just in during the first set were more likely to be just out in the second set. Thanks Chris for a highly enjoyable, good tempered match. Good luck for your remaining games."  -- Anne

I was lucky to take the first set after multiple devices and Sam coming back with determination every time he went down. Sam has a wicked topspin forehand that I had to work hard to avoid as well as some really annoying backhand drop shots.
