This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Player Comments:

  • "In recent months Owen has improved dramatically and started dominating most of our games. He is fast, consistent and gets everything back. Owen took an early lead in the first set capitalising on my mistakes. At 3-1 down we had a very tense game that lasted for more than 15 minutes with many long rallies. The next crucial game was at 4-4. Owen was 40-15 up and hit a deep shot to my backhand. I could barely reach the ball, but managed to nip it with the tip of my racket. In normal conditions the ball would have flown onto the next court but to Owen's disgust the wind dragged the ball back onto the court and I took the game. Due to exhaustion, the next two sets were less intense but each game was still close."  -- James
  • "Congrats to James! He too has improved so much over the recent months, with his consistency being the aspect of his game that has improved the most. With his amazing speed, incredible wall-like defence and improved consistency he is going to be the person to beat in the next round. I had my chances in the 1st set when I was up 3-1 in that game that lasted an eternity, and the game at 4-4 when I was up 40-15 when the wind blew the ball into the court (my heart completely sank!) But full credit to James, he fights for every point regardless of the score. Revenge is certainly on my mind for the next round! Watch out James! Thanks for a great match. P.S. I couldn't sleep that night from thinking about that heart-breaking point at 4-4 40-15!

Player Comments:

  • "Tom took a while to get going in the first set as he had problems with his grip. But once he removed the grip the match really got started. He was solid in the second set and stepped up his game with some fantastic volleys and backhand lobs. In the final set I got lucky with a few points and somehow found myself with a 5-1 lead. He came back to 5-3 but I held my nerve to take the set."  -- James
Tom White bt Darren Bellamy (Jul 30) 6-4, 2-6, 6-2
Reveal CommentJames Robertson bt Siriphan Chatchawalanon (Jul 18) 3-6, 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Such a close match! Jay dominated play in the first set with brilliant shots from all parts of the court. In the second set he was up 3-0 and I was sure that the match was over, but I broke his serve for the first time and the momentum swung in my favour. I won the next 9 games in a row leaving me 3-0 up in the third set. He then broke back and held taking it to 3-3 on my serve. That game lasted a long time and had numerous break points but I held. At 3-4 Jay was serving and he was down 0-40. He came back, won that game and then beat me in my next service game wothout me taking a point. Jay was then serving for the match at 5-4. I narrowly won the next three games to take the match."  -- James
Reveal CommentOwen Morris bt Darren Bellamy (Jul 17) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I have been looking forward to playing Darren the Wall as I was eager to observe his defensive skills that he is well known for. Forget the first set, Darren was nowhere near his best! But he was a different player in the 2nd set and was causing me all sorts of problems. I could see why they call him the Wall because I just couldn't hit winners against him, even though I was striking the ball well! The biggest game of the match was at 4-4 on my serve which lasted quite a while as both of us were so determined to win the game. On one of the break points Darren missed an easy put-away at the net. We both couldn't believe he didn't execute the shot. I eventually won that game and then broke Darren to win 6-4 and the match. Thanks for the game."  -- Owen
Reveal CommentJames Robertson bt Stuart McLeod (Jul 17) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was close. I narrowly took an early break and was leading 5-2 in the set. But I was playing safe and Stuart began to take advantage hitting brilliant winners and dominating the rallies. He broke back taking the set to 5-4. I hold my nerve to win the set 6-4. Knowing I would not win by playing safe, I was more aggressive in the second set and battled on to take the match."  -- James
Reveal CommentOwen Morris bt Tom White (Jul 17) 7-5, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A match that neither player deserved to lose! Tom was a different player to the one I played in the previous league. All aspects of his game had definitely improved since our paths last crossed. I was impressed with his fighting spirit. In both sets I managed to get an early break only for him to break straight back. The 2nd set was intense! I was up 4-1 and was thinking that Tom was too far behind to get back in it, but I was wrong! Tom dominated the next 4 games and had 2 set points at 4-5 15-40 on my serve. I managed to get it to deuce. The crucial game lasted forever and after saving a few more set points I got lucky with a net cord (sorry!) to make it 5-5. After two more hard fought games I clinched the set 7-5 to win the match."  -- Owen
Reveal CommentSiriphan Chatchawalanon bt Stuart McLeod (Jul 15) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It's a very good weather day today at Heath, not too hot, not too much windy. First set Stuart start with his serve and game easily, I also try to hold my serve as well, the game so close and we are at 2 : 2, Then I am able to use forehand better and able to break his serve, so first set is mine. Anyway in set 2, his forehand with rising the ball is fantastic, if I cannot return to end of court, he will finish his point. Our internal game is so closed, the 6:2 in set 2 will mislead his actual performance. Thank you for arrange court for us, nice to meet you and Wish you all the best of the rest of match. Cheers."  -- Siriphan
Reveal CommentStuart McLeod bt Paul Tyack (Jul 11) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was our fourth meeting, with Paul winning the previous three matches fairly convincingly. Finally i prevailed although my opponent's consistency wasn't quite there today and he was moving around the court somewhat gingerly due to a knee injury. Even still, it was a competitive game especially in the first game of the second set which must have had at least twenty deuces. Cheers Paul, hope the knee gets better."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentSiriphan Chatchawalanon bt Darren Bellamy (Jul 9) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Last match, I lost 1st set to him before I came back in 2nd and 3rd. So I knew this is another tough match for me and it is. 1st set I start break him so fast by hit aggressive, but with his consistency he hold all the game and break my serve game then we score 5:5, Oh I though the history might repeat itself. But lucky that I was able to manage next 2 game with some lucky point, so happy that history not repeat. 2nd set start under sunny sky, unfortunately his 1st serve seem gone, so I grab this chance to break his game and finally got the set. I’m so tried when play with him, he make me run all court, very good indeed for keep return all the point. Wish your serve come back and win next game. Cheers. "  -- Siriphan
Reveal CommentSiriphan Chatchawalanon bt Tom White (Jul 8) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Thank you Tom to arrange Cardiff Lawn Tennis court today, My first time here, It’s very nice and so much kind of Tennis surface, love to see that. We start 1st set on all season surface court which ball is so slow, I can hit the ball well and able to get first set, 2nd set we change the court to Hard surface with coating, Tom able to come back easily, score is just step in parallel, You hold I hold, You break I break, until score is 5:5, and this is last time I break him and I able to hold my serve game. It’s a long match, score inside very close. His forehand and backhand is very good, Nice and enjoy to play with him. Wish him win next match. Cheers."  -- Siriphan
Reveal CommentJames Robertson bt Darren Bellamy (Jul 3) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The sun was shining and it was a very hot Saturday afternoon. Darren took a while to get started and at 4-1 up in the second set I was feeling confident. But Darren suddenly found his feet and began returning all my shots. He clawed his way back to 4-4 and I was beginning to worry the match was going to go to a third set in the sweltering heat. Thankful I managed to hold on and narrowly take the next two games."  -- James
Reveal CommentOwen Morris bt Stuart McLeod (Jul 2) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Based on our previous encounter I knew I was in for a tough match, and this match certainly was! I started strongly with a love hold service game and was 30 or 40-0 up in the 2nd game and on the brink of a 2-0 lead at which point I was licking my lips. But Stuart displayed his fighting spirit and won that game and then broke me to be up 1-2. My heart sank! I knew I had to increase my intensity and I was then VERY FORTUNATE to win that set 6-2 after so many missed chances from Stuart. In the 2nd set I was 5-0 up after, again, Stuart was unable to convert on many game points. Stuart won the next 2 games after some unbelievable defending! But I was able to close the match to win 6-2. Very physical battle and my back sure ached the next day!"  -- Owen
Reveal CommentStuart McLeod bt Darren Bellamy (Jul 1) 2-6, 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "In breezy conditions at sophia gardens the battle of the grey took place. At 3-2 up in the 2nd set Darren looked set for an easy victory, however his game and his legs deserted him allowing me to reel off ten games on the trot, although there was very few quality shots from either of us. Nearing the end surprisingly Prince Charles drove past. Unsurprisingly he didn't stop."  -- Stuart

Player Comments:

  • " Wow what a match! Best match of the tournament in my book, and one which could easily have gone either way. It was the most enjoyable game i played this season with both of us playing for winners and chasing everything in sight. After losing the first set I was determined to try and get one point out of the match to make myself safe in the group so I dug in and managed to win the second. But then there had to be a third. Cerith Continued hammering his first serve in at one heck of a pace with rebound balls spraying of my racket in all directions. And I couldn’t help but standard admire when he slotted yet another passing shot down the line to win the point time after time. the light nearly beat us but we got there. Cheers Cerith. "  -- John

Player Comments:

  • "The final match for myself , and a tough one it was. Mark puts really good spin on the ball and pushed me around the court and controlled the first set with easy 6-1 win. Second set begins and mark again was 3-0 before you know it, I was making too many errors by over hitting it, so suddenly I found more of a rhythm in my game and after few rallies and deuces (mark could’ve easily one this set too) I won 6-4. Final set: tbh this was anyone’s game, breaking each other’s serve but just got my nose in front 6-4 - hopefully I’ll see mark in league 1 in September. Good luck in your last game mark "  -- Matthew

The first set doesn't reflect how close each game was and Chris saw it through. Great second set where the lead changed continually with Andy coming back to win 7-5. More close games in the third set and Chris battled through to win it. Really enjoyable match and many thanks Andy. Good luck in your future games. Cheers!"  -- Chris

  • "A sunny afternoon at Heath it was great to meet John and play a friendly but competitive match that this league is all about. The 1st Set started with breaks of serve by both players and some good rallies. At 3-2 I knew I was in for a tough match. I managed to win a couple of games in a row and take the 1st set. The 2nd set was similar and the warm weather was taking its toll but again at 3-2 (I think) I again won a few matches in a row and had 2 match points on my serve which John saved to pull it back to Deuce. Luckily for me it was 3rd time lucky and was able to take the match. Thanks for the match John good luck in your remaining matches."  -- Mark

It was a good friendly and competitive match. lots of Duce points, breaks of service and both of us Rolling the dice and Playing for winners when the opportunity arose, which made for a really great fun and energetic match. • "In great conditions we had quality tennis rallies that were long and hard work or short points that were won with great shots. Matt never quite got his serve consistent as he would of liked but it was still a tough match. I was able to make a quick start winning the first 2 games then Matt came back with I think 3 games in a row. Then I was able to get a run games and take the first set. The 2nd set was similar in that I was again able to make a quick start and go 4-1 up but knowing Matt would not make it easy for me I had 3 break points to win but Matt came back and win the set and then break my serve to make it 4-3. Luckily I was able to hold serve and break Matt to clinch win. Thanks for the game Matt hope to play again soon."  -- Mark

Each point was a battle with both players hitting some good shots and Max returning balls he had no right in returning. The 2nd set started with some breaks of serve before Max was able to take a couple of games lead with some great Tennis and was 5-3 up and serving. I had to work hard to stay in the set and was able to win the next 3 games to go 6-5 up on serve, but Max broke my serve and a Tie Break was need. It was a close first set both holding serves , but I just clinched it 7-5. The second set begins and matt was killing me with his serve and returns, and Matt was up 6-2 in second set. Final set and where do I begin?! I was 4-0 up in a blink , and tbh I don’t know how, Matt turned a gear and before you know it he’s 5-4 up on match point ??!! I pulled it back to 5-5 and then we head to tie breaker, where we agreed first to seven. Michael is a gent and a great sport. He narrowly won a tight first set and the second was just as tight and I nicked it. At 3-0 up in the third injury struck and on the resumption today I was lucky to have that cushion as Michael came out all guns blazing. He’s improving with every match and different opponent. Thanks for the match Michael and good luck for the rest of the round. As Michael said after our game... “tennis was the winner”!!"  -- Martin

The interruption in our first attempt was poorly timed for Michael as his excellent forehand began to home in on the baseline when the second set was evenly poised. I was able to start a bit faster on our second outing and managed to se out the match just in time before his strongest shot could kick in again. All the best for the rest of the round Michael!"  -- Simon

  • "After pulling my hamstring 12 days ago I returned after several physio/acupuncture sessions, aided by some heavy strapping and Voltorol. This was a really close match. Morgan has a great first serves and some big ground strokes. He moves well and dominated the first set. I needed to dig deep to turn it around. I was up early in the 2nd set and whilst Morgan never let me get away I closed it out 6-4. At 2-2 in the decider the match was in the balance. I won 3 really quick games which was out of character for the whole match and closed out the set and the match 6-3. Michael Coombes - my next opponent - was spying courtside and said the match was worth every one of the 3 pennies we charged him for his seat!!!"  -- Martin

  • "Tough match - we were both shattered at the end, especially since the last game went to deuce about 10 times. Morgan's got some really good shots, he even served an ace which seemed to go through my racket. The sun was out, the tennis was excellent, the match was even - what's not to enjoy? Well, only one thing actually - the guy on the court down from us who kept shouting to the heavens at 200 decibels every time he messed up. And judging by the tinnitus in my ear, that was every other shot. If we played indoors it might be a different result. Really enjoyed the game, and it was probably the best I've ever played (not that I've previously set that bar particularly high admittedly). Good luck with the rest of your matches Polly."  -- Michael

Player Comments:

  • "Jeff and I have played doubles together for Rhiwbina a few times this season and we’ve had a few sets of singles before so we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. This was always going to be close, fiercely contested, fun and played in the right spirit. I got off to a flyer and went 5-0 up and took the set 6-2. In the 2nd set at 1-1 we had a ridiculously long game which Jeff won and he was always in front from there and won 7-5. At 2-2 in the decider I managed to stay aggressive and kept hitting hard and went on to win 6-2. There were loads of winners from both of us and on another day Jeff could have easily won. It was a really competitive enjoyable match. Welcome to the leagues Jeff!"  -- Martin

I held serve under lots of pressure and then was able to get some returns in at 5-4 to take a competitve first set. After getting broken in the 1st game of the 2nd set, I tried to keep the unforced errors to a minimum and my 1st serves started to land so I went on a bit of a run to see out the match. My fitness was dreadful in the summer heat of Heath Park, and my legs seem to be playing a different game to what I was playing. • "It was an absolute joy playing against Sinead. She's a tough Irish lass who has the heart of a lion. She never gave up on a single point and chased everything down and returning absolutely EVERTHING! Ha I was exhausted from the constant 20 to 30 shot rallies...she is unrelinguishing and full of determination and I have nothing but the highest respect for her and her self belief." - Bruno I went up 4- 1 in the 3rd set and it didn't deter her she came back stronger than ever....im still in disbelief that I actual won in the end. • "Top bloke and a great friendly game. Llyr is a superior player with a fantastic forehand and backhand that can keep anyone on the baseline whilst he awaits his opportunity to hit a forehand winner or dink a drop shot. The first set he clearly demonstrated he was a better player with a consistent serve and winning game and mindset. Second set I dropped 2set points when 5-1 up and from then he only needed 1 match point to win a very close and competitive second set where I was probably too complacent. Certain for promotion, a very good young player!" Kevin

Sinead punished me with some fantastic shots that i didn’t even move for. So many long games / rallies and deuces. Sinead went 4-1 up and I slipped on the wet court and Sinead was kind enough to give me a couple of minutes to walk off a slight pull I incurred. I brought out all the heavy duty artillery on court and left everything out there but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. KGB held his ground well and dominated the 1st set. 2nd set we both broke each other's serve but he was resilient and eventually took the 2nd set too. The scoring system in tennis lends itself to sets running away very quickly. A lot of games went to deuce and I had to work really hard to win most games. Antonio plays really steadily and a point is never over with him as he can pick up any ball anywhere. After a quick interruption in the middle of the second set to climb up a fence to “rescue” a doggie’s ball (so that the dog would stop barking!), I managed to hit a few good shots to wrap up the match in a little bit less than 1h30.
