Reveal CommentOwen Morris bt Stuart McLeod (Jul 24) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Another tough encounter with Stuart at Heath Park. Stuart had me worried in his 10-minute 1st service game as I don’t think he missed a single first serve! Very frustrating! Stuart went on to win his service game and broke me to lead the early break. But I might have broken Stuart’s heart (nice that it’s not me for a change!) when I broke back and eventually clinched the set 6-4. The 2nd set was a nail biter. There was a bit of deja vu (from our previous encounter’s 3rd set). Stuart led a break at 5-3. I held my serve to ask the serve it out for the set question. Stuart had a set point at 40-30 but was unable to convert. After some long brutal rallies, I got the crucial break and won the set 7-5. I was so very lucky to get through this one!"  -- Owen
Reveal CommentEdward Donovan bt Darren Bellamy (Jul 22) 7-5, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Neither of us really got our A games firing and the match soon turned into a long war of attrition on a warm night at Sophia Gardens. Both sets came down to a few key points and could have gone either way."  -- Edward
Reveal CommentMark Howell-Jones bt Darren Bellamy (Jul 15) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match against Darren who certainly got everything back in very hot conditions and never gave up running. Due to his game and the hot temperature I decided to go with the serve volleying tactic and come to net on his serves as often as possible to shorten points. Luckily it worked. Thanks Darren for an enjoyable match and good luck in your other games. "  -- Mark
Reveal CommentEdward Donovan bt Stuart McLeod (Jul 6) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Gale force winds made things difficult today with many shots being blown at least a few metres from their intended destination. After a scrappy first set Stu started to adjust better to the conditions, leading 4-2 and 5-3 in the second with a couple of set points. I felt fortunate to hang on and just about edge the set."  -- Edward
Kieran Davies bt Darren Bellamy (Jul 2) 6-1, 6-1
Reveal CommentStuart McLeod bt Darren Bellamy (Jun 24) 7-6 (7-1), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "An error strewn match on a damp day at Hailey park. With the quality of the rest of the league, this was perhaps our best chance of getting points on the board but we both played as if we didn't want to win. Darren's first serve never got going and my forehand was all over the place. Still, good to stretch our legs, and see you in league 2 in the autumn Darren 😉"  -- Stuart

Reveal CommentGareth Robinson bt Kevin Birt (Aug 1) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable hit with Kevin this afternoon at the Heath Park tennis courts. The score is misleading as a number of games went to deuce and could have give either way. Thanks for the game Kevin and look forward to a rematch "  -- Gareth
Reveal CommentKevin Birt v Paul Tyack (Jul 27) 6-3, 0-6, 1-1 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "The match started with a screeching of tyres as I sprinted onto the court where a very patient Paul was waiting. I was surprised to take the first set but stayed mostly in control of the set & the points throughout. Then ye olde ‘momentum shift’ happened. Perhaps I became a but complacent but more to the point Paul stepped up at the same time. Paul started hitting winners & serving stronger and for some reason I did the complete opposite, missing winners & double faulting! However, the 3rd set started & I felt good again & confident, I took the first game, the second went to deuce, then Paul took it shortly after we had run out of time and a coaching lesson took up all the courts. Poised to be a classic find set... tbc"  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentMatthew Owen bt Gareth Robinson (Jul 25) 5-7, 1-2 Gareth Robinson Retired

Player Comments:

  • "Really good game shaping up this afternoon, unfortunately Gareth was forced to retire at the start of the second set. The first set was really closely fought, Gareth took a 5-2 lead after some great rallies. I was able to bring it back to 5-5, but Gareth again upped his game to take it 7-5. Unfortunately at the start of the second Gareth began to feel unwell, such a shame as it was a great match up until then. All the best to Gareth, hoping him a swift recovery and hopefully we’ll see him back on court soon - - Matt."  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentPaul Tyack bt Matthew Owen (Jul 21) 2-6, 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another 3 setter in the heat that swung this way & that. Matt started well and I made numerous unforced errors. Gradually though the match, the pendulum swung my way. In the third set, it was me finding more consistency and Matt making more mistakes. Thanks for the game, Matt."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentGareth Robinson bt Simon Rogers (Jul 18) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A very close, competitive match with Simon in 31 degree heat on a dry high bouncing court . Simon had some nice shots and I could see in the knock up it was going to be a tough afternoon. I managed to scrape through but it could have gone either way. Thanks for the game Simon - good luck in your remaining games. "  -- Gareth
Reveal CommentPaul Tyack bt Josh Cain (Jul 17) 6-2, 3-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A match of two halves. Josh and I started a fortnight ago but were rained off at 5-2 in the first set. Very different today in searing and rising temperatures. I finished off the first set before Josh took control in the second with some quality ground strokes. Into the final set, Josh took the first three games before I found some form and caught up. It was roasting hot and went right to the wire. Josh was on the verge at 5-4 but I managed to claw it back, winning 3 in a row to take it 7-5. Well played, Josh. Thanks for the game. Time for a cold beer!"  -- Paul
Reveal CommentOllie Stockdale bt Josh Cain (Jul 14) 6-4, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "Brilliant game with Josh, who has a very strong first serve when it goes in. Felt more like 2 mates playing for fun, was an extremely enjoyable game with long points and some great winners. Neither of us played it safe much, tried lots of crazy shots on big points. Also felt like every single game went to deuce, Josh's 2nd serve let him down at times and my forehand wasn't firing like it can do. Really enjoyed the game, I'm sure Josh will do well in his other games, hopefully we can have a hit in the near future! "  -- Ollie
Reveal CommentPaul Tyack bt Simon Rogers (Jul 10) 6-1, 3-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A match of 3 distinct parts. Simon found it difficult to maintain any rhythm in the first set, resulting in lots of errors. I was cruising at 6-1, 3-1 when Simon suddenly cranked up his serve, cut out the errors and kind of turned into the Incredible Hulk! He was pretty unplayable as he marched through 5 games in a row to take the 2nd set. Luckily for me, he seemed to turn back into Bruce Banner in the 3rd set, meaning I was able to close out the match. Thanks for the game, Simon 👍."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentGareth Robinson bt Josh Cain (Jul 8) 7-5, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A close, competitive match with Josh at a busy Hailey Park this evening. Had to wait for a court as with Wimbledon being on all the courts were taken and people were queuing to play. We finally started and from the off Josh hit some fast serves and powerful ground strokes in the first set which regularly put me on the back foot . I was fortunate to sneak out the first set. In the second set I finally managed to find some consistency to help get over the line. Good luck in your remaining matches Josh. Look forward to another game in future. "  -- Gareth
Reveal CommentMatthew Owen bt Matthew Blake (Jul 4) 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "Great game this evening, probably the closest I’ve had! Some really good, lengthy rallies throughout, I think we must have set a record for most deuces in a single match! Such an enjoyable match, some great shots from both sides, including Chukka lobbing me more times than I’d like to think about. Congrats to him too, was a real coin toss in the end but I managed to scrape through in a third set tie-break just before dark. Look forward to another clash in the future - - Matt O"  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentKevin Birt bt Josh Cain (Jul 4) 7-6 (7-2), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The last 3 times me and Josh have played we have had really close games where he has won all 3! So, this was one if the games on the group I was expecting to be close but ultimately lose. A really tight first set (standard), neither of us playing our best. I was 4-1 up and before I knew it 4-5 down, I managed to get to a tie break and just win. 2nd set had better rallies and points but uncharacteristically I won that one. It was just one of those days where Josh’s massive serve wasn't firing and a few errors came in to his normal high level game. Tbh the real excitement was in court 2 with Matt v Matthew slugging out and epic match that I kept getting distracted by! Amazing rallies, points and shots. "  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentOllie Stockdale bt Simon Rogers (Jul 3) 7-6 (7-4), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Very close first set. Simon really pushed me hard in that game, was very lucky to win the set. As always a pleasure playing with Simon, jope to play again soon."  -- Ollie
Reveal CommentKevin Birt bt Matthew Owen (Jul 2) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "After a 10minute warm up, where we seemingly rallied the same ball none stop for 10mins, I knew it was going to be a good match! First set was competitive with some great points but Matts 1st serve wasn't quite firing. The second set was phenomenal and probably one of the best I have played. Endless rallies, epic points, loads of those points where you think you have won it but the ball comes back and you try again in the other corner just to see it come back again! Enjoyable, good spirited and exhausting, both of us drenched in sweat due to long rallies and chasing shots down that went on & on! Matt's a really nice bloke, a really fair game & if he'd won that last game and took the 2nd then it could have gone either way in the 3rd. GG"  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentMatthew Blake bt Paul Tyack (Jul 2) 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Hot day at Heath park it was indeed, I’ve never played Paul but I knew it was going to be a tough game , as I’ve heard good things about Paul’s game from my friends, and a tough game it was. Paul sailed through the first set 6-3 up and started the 2nd set 3-0 up , I was doing to bad on my serving but I had to attack more against Paul and came through the set and won 6-4. We came to the final set (it felt like battle against the sun then too) it was anyone’s game but Paul made few errors at net which could’ve won him the game tbh, I held my serve strong at end and happy to take the win but brilliant game and good luck in your future games mate "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentOllie Stockdale bt Gareth Robinson (Jul 2) 6-4, 6-0

Reveal CommentMatthew Blake bt Simon Rogers (Jun 27) 3-6, 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Played at Heath park on humid evening, first question I ask myself after the game finished .. how did I win that game?! , Simon is very good all round player , serving aces , serve and volley coming to net , and smashing the forehand. I know I can hold my serve if it’s on form but Simon was putting me all around the court and it was just down to few errors he made at end of the sets to lose the game , thanks for game Simon and good luck in rest of games mate "  -- Matthew

Player Comments:

  • "It was a pleasure to meet and play against Cynthia for our three-set thriller. We had some great rallies with lots of deuce games and all played on a very (very!) hot day. I think it was Matthew that warned of her ferocious forehand in a previous comment, and he was right to do so! Anything left in the middle of the court she absolutely destroyed! A fair few unforced errors cost us both games in the first set and though the score doesn’t suggest it, the match was far closer in the remaining sets than it may appear. Good luck with your remaining matches, Cynthia and hopefully we’ll get to play each other again sometime soon. All the best. Richie"  -- Richard

Chatting like old friends during change of ends and the drinks break which were many because we chose the hottest day of the year to run around 🤪 Close match but Nigel needs to unleash that forehand winner more, it's a missile! 2nd set the heat got to us both but my bald head kept it together & squeezed out the win. Don't let your serve throw drop!!! Good fun, hope to play you again but not in that heat as it was torture."  -- Matthew

It was great to meet & play Cynthia. i can be honest, i caught her on a cold/off day but she did hit some beautiful winners that i wish i could do! be warned of that forehand. shame as this had all the makings of a 3 set match. good luck & i hope to play against you again soon"  -- Matthew

We completed the 1st set, which is hats off to you but Andrew had to concede the match. I hope its not to serious & youre back out on the courts soon"  -- Matthew

Reveal CommentMatthew Barrell bt Jacob Lyons (Jul 2) 7-5, 5-7, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "What a nice person Jacob is, we could have spent 2hrs chatting rather than tennis. His game is just as nice, superb backhand and very fast around the court. Be warned he will get so called winners back so be prepared! 1st sort of went with serve, 2nd set went a long distance beyond the 7-5, 3rd Jacob either ran out of energy or the luck was on my side as most games had 1 point difference. What a pleasure & fun way to start the new division. Good luck and drive those shots!"  -- Matthew

Paul took a 2-0 lead to start and I manage to find some form and win the 1st set 6-4 after a close battle. 2nd set was more one sided with Paul not quite finding his forehand but all credit to him for putting up a good fight out there. Reveal CommentBruno Troisi bt Mark Sweeney (Jul 6) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable match. We've played each other before so I knew it would be. We played some quality rallies and both won some magical points at times but there were also alot of unforced errors which is to be expected at our level. Mark refused to let me win the match at 5-2 in the 2nd set when I had match point and displayed some gritty determination to win the game to make It 5-3 but I managed to get over the line in the end. Well-done out on court and i look forward to our next match."  -- Bruno

Player Comments:

  • "Tough 1st match out on court today. Mike played a solid game returning a majority of what I threw at him. He took a 2-0 lead in the 1st set and I managed to claw it back and win 6-3. The 2nd set followed the same pattern as the 1st with Mike having a 3-0 lead. I fought long and hard in each and every game going ahead 4-3. It was then level at 5-5 and I just held on to take the win 7-5. It was a very competitive, close and challenging match and I just did enough to get the victory in the end. Player Comments:

  • "Really tough first set that could have gone either way. Andrew hit some incredible winners and I struggled to hold serve. His drop shots and lobs were very effective. In the second set Andrew’s serve and backhand were less consistent and my serve improved a bit. A tough but enjoyable game. Thanks Andrew!"  -- Shomon
Reveal CommentOlivia Dwyer bt Mushabbab Alabbas (Aug 2) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Mushabbab was a great player to have a game with today. His experience in squash made him great to rally against and with his ability to run for everything, this ensured I had to think carefully about my shots and placement. His service was also strong and could be quite dangerous, and many of our games were close - going to deuce often. I think Mushabbab‘s tennis will only improve with more matches and I look forward to our next game in the future. "  -- Olivia
Reveal CommentChris Parfitt bt Olivia Dwyer (Jul 19) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A great game with Olivia in scorching conditions at Victoria Park. We were both feeling the heat and consumed enough water to hydrate a camel, but still managed to have some really good rallies. Olivia has a really solid technique which had me running across the courts with some long games amongst them. First set could have gone easily either way but eventually swung in my favour giving me momentum going into the second set (and the extra motivation to try win it in 2 sets as to avoid a long match in the sun). Thanks for the fun game, Olivia! "  -- Chris

Reveal CommentChris Parfitt bt Mushabbab Alabbas (Jul 2) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Good game with Mushabbab who was a really nice guy and told me he's moved over to playing tennis after playing squash. He had some really good shots, but lacked consistency which is totally understandable at the early stages of picking up tennis. I'm sure after a few more games and some practice he will be a formidable opponent as he's definitely got it in the locker. Well played, Mushabbab, and good luck with the rest of them! "  -- Chris

Player Comments:

  • "Christina and I played at Fairwater Rec a new venue for LTL Cardiff in warm humid conditions. Christina played her consistent tennis and we played many deuce games so the score was a bit flattering to me. I won on this occasion, but we've played each other many times in the league, so who knows next time? Thanks Christina."  -- Tim
Reveal CommentFfion Henry bt Shomon Khan (Jul 1) 4-6, 6-3, [12-10]

Player Comments:

  • "I’d say I enjoyed our match but it was a really tough and close game on windy, hot afternoon at Heath Park. Shomon is an absolute gent and awesome at the net. He dominated the first set with wicked spin shots, net okay and lobs that kept me working to keep up. Set two I dug in and managed to just get enough of a lead in games to take the set. The tie break could have gone either way and I think the wind was the decider blowing some shots out that might have gone in on another day so I got lucky! Thanks Shomon for the game… I aspire to develop a net game like yours! "  -- Ffion
