Collapse AllCheltenham Parks Singles - Round 30 | Thursday 3 October 2019 to Wednesday 27 November 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 30 October 2019)

39 matches were played this round which is 68% of the total possible. That is a very respectable stat, especially at this time of year when the weather is doing its worst and if it wasn't raining the low-in-the-sky sun was showing no sympathy for tennis players. So well done Cheltenham! Here's to some great rounds in 2020!

Group Summary:

A great round for Andre who wins the group at his first attempt! Congratulations! It was hard luck on John, who beat him, but John played one fewer match and was pipped at the post by one point! Well played in any event. Jeroen was also on good form but a shame to see nothig of Jonathan this round. Maybe next time!

  • "Managed to squeeze this one in before the deadline thanks to David's highly tuned rain sonar. After a delayed kick off, it was clear that David's big serve was going to be a challenge to contend with on the slippy surface. We battled through some fantastic points and a gripping game involving 5 deuces. Thanks for the match! "  -- Sam

Player Comments:

  • "Paul's impressive serving deservedly won him the first set. After a rain delay the second set was decided and a hard-fought third set was completed as the light faded. I'm thankful for the one street light that lit the court and kept play going! Paul played brilliantly through-out, an enjoyable (if slightly soggy) match. Thanks."  -- Sam

Reveal CommentSam Grace bt Tom Gadsby (Nov 17) 1-6, 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable contest with lots of long ralleys, endless deuces and a thrilling final set. We found ourselves playing many extended points as our styles matched and skill levels were very even. The ball would seemingly never be out of the game, no matter the accuracy of the lob, power of the winner or angle of the dropshot. All three sets were closely contested and the match could have gone either way. Definitely cause for a re-match! "  -- Sam

Group Summary:

Every match came with a commentary and it was good to see how the tennis progressed as the round went on. Newcomer Toby who played his first ever match on Oct 5 was pushing Alastair to three sets by the end of the round 7 weeks later. As for Lu , the last of her 5 matches (against) Matt was 'absolutely the best match I have ever had'. Rallies went on so long, Matt apparently had the strength to laugh and Lu says she had to stop grunting to save energy! Still, it took her to the top of the group with Mark runner up. Congratulations all round.

Player Comments:

  • "It was absolutely the best match I have ever had. So many long rallies, each rally had last over 30 shots, some reached 40 shots, which made Matt start to laughing of the ENDLESS, made me stopped grunting to save my last bit of energy. It was great fun, brilliant tennis and good people. Thank you Matt."  -- Lu
Reveal CommentAlastair Clark bt Toby Moate (Nov 24) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "It was a marathon! Well done to Alistair for winning through in the end. Loads of deuce/advantage games again. The most was 10 in the first set I think. It was touch and go whether we'd be able to finish as we were only half way through the second set when our booked time ran out (an hour and half). Fortunately the dank weather meant there were some no show-ers on other courts. We ended up playing on courts 1, 3, 4 and 6! "  -- Toby
Reveal CommentLu Yin bt Alastair Clark (Nov 18) 6-2, 6-3

  • "It was a good match, a lot of rallies and a lot of fun. Alastair made extra efforts running for balls, so persistent. If the match had last longer, I would have lost my ground. "  -- Lu

Reveal CommentStephen Smith bt Toby Moate (Nov 3) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We were both plagued with 'sun-in-eyes' - that neither sunglasses nor visor could have done much about - and frustrated with our regular unforced errors. Despite that we had a fun enough match with some good rallies and the occasional cracking win-shot - and Stephen won fair and square. We chatted during and afterwards and learned some good lessons. Whether we can keep to them is another matter. I'm off to buy some sunglasses!"  -- Toby
Reveal CommentMatt Shepherd bt Toby Moate (Oct 27) 6-1, 6-3

Reveal CommentLu Yin bt Toby Moate (Oct 27) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It was a beautiful day and a good match. There were good rallies, and we had been sort of practising playing tennis half blind as the sun light went straight to our sight. We managed it eventually. Thank you Toby for the match. "  -- Lu
Reveal CommentMark Twigg bt Toby Moate (Oct 5) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "My first ever match. Despite the scores we both felt it was a very even and enjoyable match, but well done for winning Mark. I didn't mind loosing. We lost count of the deuce/advantage/deuce/advantage in many of the games. Lots of long rallies. I think the first game lasted 15 minutes (well it felt like it). We both enjoyed playing so much we carried on - free from the % play nervousness. Very encouraging for the both of us for the battles ahead - win or loose."  -- Toby
