Collapse AllClapham Common Singles - Round 37 | Thursday 2 February 2017 to Wednesday 29 March 2017 (Midpoint: Wednesday 1 March 2017)

Thanks to everyone who got involved in the first round of 2017, we hope you enjoyed it! It was great to see lots of closely contested groups and many matches go the distance. Congratulations to the new group champions and we hope to see you all back next time for more tennis now the days are longer and temperatures warmer!

Group Summary:

Omar had to dig deep into his energy reserves in this round with four of his matches going the distance. This time spent on court was worth it though as Omar claimed five wins and bonus points to finish as the clear champion. Well done to James who battled through some tight sets to secure three wins and second place. Now Andy matched James' three wins and also beat Omar - could Andy have improved on his bronze if he'd played a few more matches? Maybe we will find out next time.

At one set all, having unfortunately come to the end of our court booking, we decided to call it a day. I'm looking forward to our next game, when the conditions will hopefully be more tennis-friendly!"  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "This was a very enjoyable match, with the first game - a lengthy exchange that went to deuce - setting the tone for a tight contest full of entertaining rallies. James clinched a crucial break to take the first set 6-4, but soon found himself 3 games down in the second. The momentum swung back his way as he got on level terms, but Brian had a set point at 5-3, before James won the last four games to edge home."  -- James
Thomas Coleman bt Carlos Vega Alonso (Mar 8) 6-3, 7-5
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Omar Cader (Feb 26) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very tricky conditions, with the sun and wind causing problems for both players. The ball seemed to be going sideways at times! A number of long deuce games at the beginning of both sets could have gone either way and put a different spin on the match. Ultimately, Omar struggled to get into the match following these close games and I managed to hold my concentration and see the match out. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentOmar Cader bt Brian O'neill (Feb 25) 3-6, 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another great match, been lucky this round to have so many close battles. Playing styles were pretty symmetrical (lefty, big 1st serve, big forehand,) and so were the 1st and 3rd sets as both of us raced into unassailable leads that the other clawed back but couldnt quite redress. Difference was the second set where I hit to the backhand and came in and managed to put away virtually all the volleys and overheads. Thanks Brian for a great match in the swirling winds of tooting bec. "  -- Omar

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentOmar Cader bt James Mower (Feb 16) 6-1, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Topsy turvy match played on an uneven court in the rain (again!). I served and volleyed my way through the first set quickly, but then James found his form, returning all my best serves and passing me with ease time after time on both wings. He raced into a 4-1 lead in the final set, at which point i relaxed and started hitting more aggressive shots, and staying back more. Very lucky to grab the win in the end"  -- Omar
Reveal CommentJames Mower bt Thomas Coleman (Feb 12) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "When James raced into a 4-0 first-set lead, there was no hint of the drama to come. Thomas won 5 of the next 6 games to set up a tense conclusion to the first set, with James just doing enough to clinch it 7-5. Thomas then took the first two games of the second set, forcing James back with a more agressive style. In a match full of tight deuce games, James managed to wrestle back the momentum, eventually prevailing 6-2."  -- James
Reveal CommentOmar Cader bt Carlos Vega Alonso (Feb 11) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "First there was the rain, and then the snow. Scoreline does not reflect a tricky match against a player that is much better than he thinks he is, and who does the difficult things well. I was again quite reliant on the serve and comng to the net to finish off points although some lousy approach shots got the full punishment they deserved. Hopefully play again soon in better conditions"  -- Omar
Reveal CommentOmar Cader bt Thomas Coleman (Feb 9) 6-4, 3-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A great match to start the round. Real contrast in playing styles, the park version of raonic vs djokovic. On this occasion, big serves and forehands trumped attacking baseline play and passing shots. But it was very very close......I got lucky with a couple of volleys on the stretch which put me 5-0 up in the third and gave me enough of a cushion for the win. Thanks Thomas for a great battle, could have gone either way!"  -- Omar

Group Summary:

Ben and Etienne did not give an inch to each other in the race for the title as they both recorded an impressive five victories to tie at the top on ten points. And so their head to head proved to be a fitting finale with the champion decided by the outcome. Ben got away from the blocks quickest to take the first set 6-2, but Etienne fought back to make the second a much closer affair. However this wasn't quite enough to stop Ben from taking the win and with it the group crown - well played both!

Robb goes away with the satisfaction of winning the most matches in the group but just misses out of the title. Alex "had to play his best tennis to get over the line" in his match against Pete and this ability to find his best form when he needed it alongside excellent scheduling skills paid off as he earned extra points to add to his three wins to overtake Robb into the lead. Credit also to Pete who matched Alex's win/loss record but finishes back in third as he missed out on those all important bonus points.

Group Summary:

Full marks to Gokhan who played great to tennis to earn a clean sweep of wins and put us in no doubt as to who the winner of group twelve is. Mike made sure Gokhan didn't have it all his own way as he battled back to take their match the distance in a marathon encounter. Helen also showed some fine form to win two matches but is pipped to the silver by Mike due to his victory in their head to head.

Group Summary:

Amelia and Mark were both in the hunt for top spot finishing level on six points with three wins each. Their head to head therefore comes into play and it was Amelia who came out firing to race through the first set 6-1 and despite Mark fighting back in the second to force a tie-break she held her nerve to see out the victory and become the champion. Unfortunate to see Jessica withdraw - we hope you're ok!
