Collapse AllClapham Common Singles - Round 39 | Thursday 22 June 2017 to Wednesday 16 August 2017 (Midpoint: Wednesday 19 July 2017)

Good to reach the 200 matches played mark in this summer round in Clapham. However with this under half of the total available there is still room for improvement, though we do understand the courts are busy at this time of year. Well done to the new groups champs and we hope to see you all next time.

Group Summary:

Michael marched into top spot with four straight wins though he was given a few tests along the way. Thomas, Laurie and Andy all came flying out of the blocks in their head to heads with Michael, forcing him to dig deep and produce several excellent comebacks to remain unbeaten throughout. Well done also to Thomas for narrowly clinching second ahead of Kevin.

  • "There was a cagey start to the first set, with breaks of serve exchanged as both players took time to adjust to the dazzling sun at one end. James managed to break the pattern to go 3-2 up, before winning the next three games to see out the set. He carried on where he had left off at the start of the second, surging to a 5-0 lead. Laurie threatened a comeback by reducing the deficit to 5-2, before James closed out the match."  -- James

With no commentaries accompanying this group, the tennis had to do the talking. Oliver's good form continued as backed up his promotion with another title winning display. A combination of four victories and good scheduling ability was enough for Oliver to clinch the crown ahead of Vincent. Vincent does however finish with the satisfaction of having beaten the champ.

Bernard finished with the best stats of the group, but in a competitive league such as this sometimes you need that little bit extra to make the difference. • "Since Monday Night Tennis adorned TV screens rarely has a match been as thrilling and entertaining as that played this Monday evening in Clapham. Simon simply dazzled the assembled crowd with his skills and this explains the record viewing figures from those watching on their Teleboxes. The story goes that at a young age his coach tried to show Simon the tennis rule-book. He simply laughed in the coach's face and instead decided to play tennis like a true magician! He is able to exact drop-shots, lobs and vicious spin on the ball that Dynamo, David Blaine and the record numbers in the crowd were left wondering How did he do that? Is that even possible? I no longer understand physics! You'd better get your tickets as Simon is back soon."  -- Edward

It was as if the players had been transported back to Roman times during the first set as, just like a pair of finely tuned gladiators, they went to war in pursuit of glory in front of an adoring crowd. Momentum, just like Emperor Nero's mood, swung one way and then to the other leaving the crowd demanding more and thoroughly enjoying this epic contest that not even Pliny the Younger could have documented. There were even some dastardly 21st century news helicopters to catch the scenes. The crowd were treated to a riot of tennis and can now say Bharadia Vs Hamill? I was there!"  -- Edward

  • "My, my, my, Saturday morning saw a spectacular exhibition of 'A' grade tennis at Clapham Common. Tennis fans of South London know a good match when they see one and this one smacked them in the face before knocking their socks off! The crowd was treated to baseline rallies, ace serving, and deft drop shots. A liquorice allsorts compilation of tennis if you will, however, this tasted a whole lot better. It was like reaching into a box of celebrations and pulling out the Malteser one rather than the bounty - a true success! That's enough food analogies for one report so let's talk tennis. Saturday was hot, really hot. I mean I'm fairly sure the rubber on the soles of my shoes were melting as Stu pushed me around the court. Sizzling stuff!"  -- Edward

Player Comments:

  • "On Saturday there was an incredible match that saw two oppositions who, at the height of their power and skill, can draw fans and media from all corners of the globe. No forget the Lions Vs the All Blacks in the rugby, this was Leighton Vs Hamill at Kennington Park on what has been described by some as a great day to play tennis. The crowd assembled but had barely been able to take their seats by the time Jonny had screamed into a 4-1 lead in the first set. Jonny was like a bat out of hell as he hit winner after winner and lob after lob. His mercurial talents were there for all to see and should there be any last minute drop outs at SW19 then Jonny Leighton would be a fine replacement who'll be on hand to whip the crowd up into a frenzy."  -- Edward

  • "What a time to be alive! Wimbledon is about to kick off (meaning Queen's is on), we're enjoying a long hot summer and Clapham Common Singles Round 39 has just started. The puritanical tennis fan knows the best tennis being played this summer is in the parks and commons up and down the country. It turns out that there are loads of them as they flocked to Kennington Park to welcome in the new round. The players put on such a show that it left the journalists covering the match running out of column inches to describe the action! There were winners, lobs, net-cords and even a cheeky slice or two. The players left having more new fans than when they arrived and as such the post-match autograph session lasted for hours. Well played and well done"  -- Edward

Player Comments:

  • "Well, well, well, if it isn't our old friend Mr Wind. Michael and I got very well acquainted with, in my opinion the worst form of weather, as the wind swirled, battered and buffeted Clapham Common Tennis courts, putting at risk South-London's perfect Sunday. But fear not as tennis came to the rescue to instil passion and inspiration amongst the adoring fans who travelled in their thousands to grab a seat for this match. Michael's technique sees him chop down on the ball like a cobra pouncing for its victim or a lumber-jack being a little over zealous with their axe, either way this makes his game very dangerous indeed. The crowd certainly enjoyed it as the fans began bellowing their support like a hungry gorilla at feeding time. Top marks."  -- Edward

It doesn't get much closer than this, Jon and Liam tied on points at the top with the same win/loss record and bonus points after giving their all on the court. As is always the case in this circumstance the two's head to head comes into play. Jon was too strong for Liam on the day prevailing in straight sets and with this clinches the group win.

It was all to play for going into front-runners Jordan and Barney's head to head, and this match certainly came up with the goods. After two and a half hours only a couple of points in a thrilling third set tiebreak made the difference with Jordan holding his nerve to emerge victorious 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) and with this becomes the new champ - well played both. Good to see this group mastering the art of scheduling well with nearly everyone earning their bonus prize.
