Revision information
Provide an explanation of the changes you are making. This will help other authors understand your motivations.

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Getting started

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

For everything you need to know before you get started see the FAQs and review the Rules and Regulations, which all players agree to adhere to when playing in the leagues.

If there is anything else you need help with get in contact with Nigel, Sally and the team who will be happy to help!

Collapse AllCorby Singles - Round 3 | Thursday 12 January 2017 to Wednesday 8 March 2017 (Midpoint: Wednesday 8 February 2017)

A fantastic round to start off 2017 in Corby with over 75% of matches played with great enthusiasm and lots of these closely contested. Thanks to everyone for all your efforts and we hope to see you back in the next round for much more tennis!

Group Summary:

Graham continued his excellent form from the previous round to claim two group one titles on the bounce, however there were a few bumps along the way. Paul gained revenge for his loss in the previous round with a battling three set win over the champion and Ryan also produced some inspired tennis to emerge victorious. The three set manner of these defeats for Graham did prove decisive as the two extra points he earned from the sets he won were enough to push Ryan and Stephen into second and third place respectively.

Final Rankings:

  1. Graham Love [W4, L2] 12 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Ryan Freestone 10.1 [W4, L1] 11 includes 2 bonus points RUNNER UP
  3. Stephen Lewins 9.2 [W5, L1] 10
  4. Paul Rowden 8.2 [W2, L2] 6
  5. Ruth Morcombe [W1, L4] 4 includes 2 bonus points
  6. Adrian Colwill [W1, L3] 3
  7. Ben Norwell 10.2 [L4] 2 includes 2 bonus points
  8. Gavin Potter 8.2 withdrawn

Match Results:

Reveal CommentPaul Rowden bt Graham Love (Mar 8) 3-6, 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "As usual, a game against Graham is never straight forward, the score line does not reflect the battles for every point, the advantages and the back to deuces. The tone was set in the very 1st game taking over 10 mins to play it. Graham forced the game more in the 1st set and held the net well, in the 2nd & 3rd sets I managed to reduce my errors and impose myself more and it paid off in the end. A great battle, played in usual good and fair spirit. Well done Graham on winning the overall title, at least I can say I beat the 2 time Champion!! I'm looking forward to doing battle in the next round. "  -- Paul
Reveal CommentStephen Lewins bt Ryan Freestone (Mar 7) 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "After last year's battle with Ryan I had high expectations for this one and it did not disappoint! Again it was settled by a third set tie-break and this match had everything - stunning winners, marathon rallies, momentum going back and forth etc. I look forward to the next one in the summer."  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentGraham Love bt Stephen Lewins (Mar 6) 7-6 (7-3), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A very competitive match and unfortunately the lights went off during the 2nd set and Stephen couldn't get them to come back on. We will try to get the match finished in the next week or teo"  -- Graham
Reveal CommentStephen Lewins bt Paul Rowden (Mar 2) 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "What a battle! Paul deservedly ran away with the first set, and when my string broke at 1-0 down in the second it seemed to be curtains. However Paul very sportingly lent me his spare racket which must contain magic within its strings as it helped me fight back to claim a tight second set. In the decider all the games were close-fought, Paul earned himself a 5-2 lead but I fought back again to force a tie-break. A very enjoyable match, hopefully we'll have many more in future."  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentStephen Lewins bt Adrian Colwill (Feb 13) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A great battle, especially in the second set where Adrian went 5-2 up and on another day would have taken it to a decider. Hope to play again!"  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentRyan Freestone bt Ruth Morcombe (Feb 11) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Thoroughly enjoyable match; the first set was very topsy turvy, Ruth went 2-0 up, I then went 5-2 up, Ruth pulled it back to 5-4 and after a multiple deuce game I eventually sneaked the set! Second set continued to be as competitive and was closer than the scoreline suggests. Ruth played great attacking tennis throughout which made it tough from my side of the net! Well played"  -- Ryan
Reveal CommentPaul Rowden bt Adrian Colwill (Feb 9) 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A game full of ups and downs, played outdoor in very cold conditions, even tried to snow at one point. Usual swings and roundabout match, no quarter given and both ran to exhaustion at times. Well played Adrian and good luck for the rest of the matches. Paul."  -- Paul
Adrian Colwill bt Ruth Morcombe (Feb 8) 6-0, 6-0
Reveal CommentRyan Freestone bt Paul Rowden (Feb 7) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Paul and I ran out of time as Corby Tennis Centre was closing, at 1 set all and 4 games all! We shall conclude the match as soon as possible"  -- Ryan
  • "After battling for two hours, and reaching 1 set all and 4 games all play was halted as we had reached 10pm and Corby Tennis Centre was closing! A dreadful shame as up until that point the match had been forwards and backwards all the way with long rallies, deuce games, breaks of serve etc! We managed to meet back up at Geddington Tennis Club to finish the final set, as no indoor courts were available at Corby. Although there was very little of the match left to be played, it didn't disappoint as we both managed to find our 'groove' straight away and had a number of long rallies! Well played Paul, you didn't deserve to lose the match and I certainly hope we can have a rematch soon," Ryan

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentRyan Freestone bt Graham Love (Jan 15) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2

Thoroughly enjoyed the match which was played very competitively but also very fairly. Well played Graham, thanks a lot for a great match :)"  -- Ryan
