Vertical Tabs

This is how it works

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Players are grouped by ability, so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA
  • For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are played to short-set format; if a set reaches 4 games all, the next game decides the set. If the match reaches a set all, a matchtiebreak is played (see link on right)
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are grouped according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Everyone in the group plays each other once during the round
  • You get one point for each set you win
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of each group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winners get a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of the groups (and sometimes the top two) are promoted for the next round; those who come bottom (and sometimes the bottom two) are demoted

For everything you need to know before you get started see the FAQs and review the Rules and Regulations, which all players agree to adhere to when playing in the leagues.

Player Comments:

  • "At the second attempt (miscalculated the light the first time) we had a fabulous close game. Rob has beautiful shots on both sides, approached the net well and often and had powerful serves. His play brought the best out in my game too! Really enjoyable and could easily have gone the other way. "  -- Doug

Reveal CommentDoug Brown bt Ruaridh Kilgour (Sep 20) 1-4, 4-1, [10-6]

Player Comments:

  • "Excellent match with Ruaridh. First three games set the tone All multiple deuces and all went Ruaridh's way! Then I broke to love with a slight change in tactics ... that I couldn't maintain! 2nd set was similarly close but this time in my favour as I slightly increased my aggression, though it's all relative. We then had to wait for half an hour for another court! Good fun match and considering that Ruaridh and Blair have only been back playing for 10 months they've both given me far too good a run for the money!"  -- Doug
Robert Turnbull bt Blair Newman (Sep 19) 5-4, 4-1

Vasile Toch bt Robert Turnbull (Sep 12) 4-0, 4-2
Reveal CommentDoug Brown bt Blair Newman (Sep 11) 5-4, 4-2

Player Comments:

  • "As predicted, an hour is often not enough for a short format match, though at 3-1 up in the first it perhaps ought to have been! But, after a first service game with 3 double faults in it, Blair settled and and has good length. I also didn't learn fast enough that he has a wicked cross-court forehand! Excellent close first set, which I clung on to on my service game, only to go 2-0 down in the second. With my legs cramping and twitching from too much doubles at the weekend I thought we were on for a match tie-break for sure. But I somehow managed to win two very tight deuce games and then suddenly Blair threw in some loose points including his signature shot that missed by an inch on match point. Bad luck but great fun, thanks!"  -- Doug

Reveal CommentCharles Cooke bt Areti Manataki (Oct 15) 4-0, 4-0

Player Comments:

  • "Don't get fooled by the scoreline. Areti is clearly a skilled tennis player who is simply a little rusty having not played in a while. She hit some lovely drop shots and ground strokes to win more points than this score suggests. Lots of games went to deuce. I look forward to seeing how her scores develop if she can get a few more matches organised. "  -- Charles
Bobby Seiler bt John Heaney (Oct 12) 4-0, 4-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very evenly matched, could have gone either way."  -- Ian
Reveal CommentAlex Onyeador bt John Heaney (Oct 4) 4-2, 4-1

Player Comments:

  • "Had a great tussle with John in our game tonight. I started off fairly well holding and then getting the break, but at 3-0 up John found another gear, holding his serve and then immediately breaking. He turned the match into 'First Strike' tennis and John was in full control. Luckily I managed to ride John's hot streak and got the break to win the set. The second set started with a great break of my serve by John, but I managed to hold out for the win. It must be said that John was cramping having played doubles immediately beforehand so he did well to play back to back. Thanks for the game"  -- Alex

Reveal CommentIan Hepplewhite bt Alex Onyeador (Sep 29) 5-3, 4-2

Player Comments:

  • "Well matched game. Managed to return Alex's big serves which was a bit of a challenge. Good game."  -- Ian
Reveal CommentAlex Onyeador bt Iulia Toch (Sep 23) 4-1, 5-3

Player Comments:

  • "Iulia pushed me hard all the way to the finish line in this match. The first set was tough enough (ignore the score line) with one game that took near 15 minutes. But the second set was a tale of two halves with Iulia rushing ahead and I facing the prospect of getting 'bageled'. Thankfully I managed to edge it back, but really Iulia let me back in with a few unforced errors, so I am not going to take any credit there. Watch out for her excellent angles shots which are near impossible to return. Thanks for the match"  -- Alex
Reveal CommentBobby Seiler bt Robert Letham (Sep 21) 1-4, 4-2, [10-4]

Player Comments:

  • "The classic 'could have gone either way' type match. Rob got into his stride early and strolled the first set. I managed to find some rhythm and held my nerve to take it to a decider. I got a couple of early break points in the tie-break and built up a lead that Rob couldn't quite peg back but the whole match was thoroughly enjoyable with some epic points. Thanks Rob."  -- Bobby
Reveal CommentAlex Onyeador bt Charles Cooke (Sep 19) 4-2, 5-3

Player Comments:

  • "I enjoyed a highly competitive game against Charles this evening. Charles elected to receive after winning the toss and promptly broke my serve. I managed to find a firmer footing and slowly worked my way back. The second set was extremely close and could have gone either way. Lots of running and excellent smashing by Charles "  -- Alex
Reveal CommentAlex Onyeador bt Bobby Seiler (Sep 17) 4-2, 4-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable game with Bobby this sunday evening. Bobby started off very strongly with serves that left me floundering. I eventually managed to get my timing right, which coincided with Bobby slightly coming off the boil. Beware, Bobby starts fast and has a great serve! Thanks for the game"  -- Alex
Reveal CommentCharles Cooke bt Robert Letham (Sep 16) 1-4, 4-1, [10-0]

Player Comments:

  • "A very tight 1st set with loads of deuce points but Robert came through being more consistent and confident enough to hit some winners. In the 2nd set I started hitting the ball a lot better and cut down on the unforced errors. The tie-break score was a surprise to both of us, Robert admitting that he lost concentration while I was on a high after winning the 2nd set."  -- Charles
Reveal CommentIan Hepplewhite bt John Heaney (Sep 14) 4-2, 4-0

Player Comments:

  • "Good match, John had a great serve but not consistent in second set. Games at times could have went to either player."  -- Ian

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable return to the league and a rare win over Alex for me. It took a fair bit of luck to accomplish, with my serve in a streak of good form and an unfamiliar racquet giving Alex a few challenges."  -- Robert
