Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Louis Allen

"Really enjoyable round with all close matches," Adam Burgis

Adam Burgis

"From taking up tennis, at one of the Local Tennis Leagues, namely Belair & Dulwich League, I have met all the benefits of being fit and stress-free with a top-tier ace! I thank Sally, Nigel & all the participants for making that possible!"

Pedro Figueroa

"I have found the matches very enjoyable so far. Just wish I was taller and younger but beginning singles matches at 60 not being as daunting as I thought and is definitely having a positive impact on my doubles play! I appreciate the work behind the scenes to make it all happen,"

Annie Brown

"I enjoyed playing with all the players and I would like to thank them all for giving me the opportunity to meet and play with them. It was a great experience and I would like to do it again,"

Dominic Uccheddu

"Thanks very much for all the hard work making the local leagues happen, it ran so smoothly and I really enjoyed the games and meeting all the other players - thanks so much for facilitating this. Looking forward to the next round,"

Player Comments:

  • "Absolutely crazy match featuring two incredible comebacks. Set 1: Gavin leads 5-2 with a set point, then his serve stops working and I come back to win 7-5. Set 2: I lead 5-1 and 0-40 - suddenly Gavin's serve comes back and incredibly he saves the three match points, plus two more in the set and goes on to level at 7-5. Rain delays meant a 3rd set breaker where I managed to get my nose in front early on and serve out. Phew! What a match - thanks Gavin, look forward to playing you again. "  -- Michael

Player Comments:

  • "Having blown my chances of retaining the title earlier in the week with a poor performance against Joe Clarke, I came into this match determined to take something from it. Francis is no easy opponent, however, and I had to fight for every point in a hard fought first set. There were some punishing rallies in very humid conditions and I tried to shorten the points as much as possible in the second, which eventually paid off. Thanks Francis for a competitive match."  -- Michael

  • "First set started close to 3-3, then I ran away with the match from there. There were good quality rallies, also quite a few unforced errors, from both sides of the net. The sun, heat, and humidity did little to aid our focus. Look forward to playing Francis again"  -- George

Pleased to only have to wait about 10 minutes at Dulwich Park for a free court, after some families had finished, and that is at 2pm on a Saturday in the middle of Wimbledon. A big advantage of neither of us being coached servers is we both use the serve as simply a means of getting the ball in play rather than a point-scoring opportunity, which means a beter game for both of us."  -- Neville

Player Comments:

  • "A plausible effort by Greg tonight at Belair Park pleased the eyes of those who took the time to come to see him in action. It needs to be said that the scoreline does not tell the full story of this evening contest since Greg fought for every point but unfortunately tonight I was in my element and I duly put paid to his challenge in time to get home to make dinner for my wife and I. I do wish Greg the very best in his next match and hope the experience of his first season with Belair & Dulwich Local Tennis League inspires him to carry on the long and winding road of making it as far as his pursuit or beyond his tennis learning chase!"  -- Pedro

Player Comments:

  • "It was a lovely sunny evening lots of people playing tennis So had to wait 1 hour for court to be free, the set we managed to play was very competitive, good rallies and lots of break points, could of gone either way. Played the first couple of points of second set when there was a screech of tyres and loud bang on the road, went to investigate and there was a car in its roof, so went to help till ambulance service arrived, unfortunately meant we were unable to complete a second set. Hopefully we can finish match at some point, as really enjoyed it. Thanks Helen for your understanding with situation."  -- Ben

If this were to presents an inconvenience, I am fully prepared to concede the match to Helen as she played wonderfully well in the second set. Thank you so much."  -- Pedro
