Player Comments:

  • "Perfect conditions for playing today. It was a well fought first set with plenty of long rallies, a number of broken service games and a particularly large number of duces. Second set continued in the same way. The same came out which made serving a challenge. We were evenly matched and it was an enjoyable game. Well played. Hope to see you in the next round."  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "This match had been cancelled 3 times before today due to rain but today we played in baking sunshine. A quick first set then a more competitive 2nd set which saw Caroline getting used to my slices and making me run from side to side with some excellent ground strokes. Highly enjoyable match though and I managed to do a backspin dropshot which landed on Caroline's side of the net and bounced straight back onto mine! First time I have ever done this. Thanks for making the journey Caroline and hope to play again in the future."  -- Craig

Player Comments:

  • "This match lasted three and a half hours. To put that into perspective the Concorde flew from London to New York in less time that! To top it off there was no breeze and just to exaggerate the temperature slightly to make ourselves sound even more legendary, it was about 26 degrees centigrade. David came out strong, his trademark placement making me look like a puppet on his strings. Down a set in the cruel Sub Saharan heat, a voice begun echoing in my head, it was the voice of the Final Boss from League 1 - Simon Underwood, saying, “up and over the net, just get the ball up and over the the net”. Stumbling for lack of hydration, but invigorated by these words, we began smacking the ball into near earth orbit. Honestly, madness, thanks DC."  -- Jerome

Player Comments:

  • "Fabulous game with Emma today. Very evenly matched with some excellent rallies. It was luck of the draw who won the points and I drew the prize but it really could have gone either way. Good luck with your other matches Emma and look forward to another game in the future!"  -- Jessica
Reveal CommentDavid Cook bt Chris Warland (Aug 29) 6-4, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "The first set started with a 3-0 lead for David before Chris pulled back to level at 3-3. David then broke again and maintained the break to win the first set 6-4. Now normally at this point David is ready for a nap. Set 2 started pretty evenly with a couple of breaks and a few break backs. David had three match points which Chris held onto to force the tie break. David then took an early lead and held on to win in straight sets. Another really good match from both players. This is the first time David has beaten Chris in the League so it feels like a milestone was reached."  -- David
Reveal CommentJerome O'Meara bt Craig Armour (Aug 28) 4-6, 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Oppenheimer the famous nuclear physicist once observed Craig’s slice and coined the phrase, “I am become skid, destroyer of rackets.” It is believed that what Oppenheimer meant by this quote is due to the amount of backspin revolutions Craig creates on the ball it develops its own centrifugal force and therefore its own centre of gravity. Much like a black hole this will essentially devour all material even sub atomic particles: warping space time itself. In other words, it takes you a set to adjust to Craig’s other worldly technique, even though I’ve played him many times now. You think the balls a metre in front of you, but no, they are glitched through an unknown dimension. It was an enduring battle." -- Jerome

  • " A new arena this time around - Manor Gardens in Gildredge park. An understated venue surrounded by rhododendrons, perrenials and more wildlife in a quaint maze of greenery. This match was very close. Must have had a the longest time per point I’ve ever played in such was the consistency and depth of Caroline’s game. I had to be on my toes and scramble to stay in the points. Some solid rally’s throughout. Good fun playing someone new! "  -- Jerome

  • "Yet another epic encounter with David who raced away with the first set with a series of fine winners. I managed to get through a close 2nd set. David then took a 5-2 lead in the decider but somehow I managed to force a breaker which I just managed to scrape through. Well played again David and maybe the pendulum will swing your way in the next round."  -- Craig

  • "thanks chatgpt… On a sizzling Sunday morning, the blazing sun failed to diminish our enthusiasm for a riveting tennis match. With each swing of the racket, we propelled the ball from left to right, our feet covering kilometers on the court and leaving our step counters astir. Amidst the intense volleys, a moment of befuddlement crept in as we grappled with the intricacies of scoring in the first set. Yet, our unwavering sportsmanship and shared goal propelled us forward, and eventually, clarity dawned. The jubilant cheers that followed were a testament to our perseverance. As we look ahead, the prospect of another encounter in the next round fills us with anticipation and motivation"  -- Chris

  • "The surging wind from the Atlantic jet stream paired with warm undercurrents made for a sticky affair on the famed purple and green of the Hampden Park Courts. Due to the elements one had to be sniper-like when calculating his serve toss, millimetres out and you’d be sending the ball into the sea. Deuces? I’ll have forty, love. Honestly though this match had so many deuces which made for a proper battle. Probably something like 14 in total! Chris showed tremendous fight in the second set leaning on his power to put shots away. The third set was equally tight but I managed pull ahead near the end. Thanks for the match Chris. "  -- Jerome

  • "Sweeping down the valley of the great South Downs ridge came an unfamiliar heat. Occasional intervals of wind only seemed to whip up the warmth on the Old Town courts. But it felt like the summer we never had, and for that - the flame inside me stirred. Just as I found my rhythm Jessica would pull out pace absorbing shots that sent the ball far into the corners of the court causing me to lose balance and be compromised for the rest of the point. I managed to maintain just enough consistency to see out the match. It was a good fun playing someone new, all the best in the rest of your games!"  -- Jerome
