Player Comments:

  • "It was fun game despite the difficult conditions. It was a windy day and West End Rec court is not in a good state, the court is pretty uneven and I even took a tumble on a patch of mud at the back of the court. Luckily for me I think I was able to cope better and Kai struggled to find rhythm. There were some good competitive games and it was an enjoyable match, thanks Kai!"  -- Thomas
Reveal CommentSiddhartha Kunzru bt Thomas Ashcroft (Sep 25) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "First time for me playing at Giggs Hill Field - nice newly laid out courts though pity about the noisy background (basketball court, fitness classes) which makes it tough to focus -:( I really felt off-color today and struggled with my timing. Thankfully Thomas was also a bit inconsistent which helped me a bit. He is lighting quick around the court and makes you win the point few times over! Thanks Tom for the game."  -- Siddhartha
Reveal CommentSiddhartha Kunzru bt Kai Diers (Sep 22) 6-0, 6-0

  • "Perfect day for a game of tennis. Scoreline is a bit unfair for Kai as he is a much better plays who just needs to shake off the rust. Great to meet you Kai, wishing you all the best for other matches in the league."  -- Siddhartha

  • "As always, a competitive match with Adrian. I was quick off the blocks while Adrian was a bit error-prone in the 1st set which made it relatively straightforward for me. Adrian got into his groove in the 2nd set while I struggled a bit and had to dig deep in the end to close it out. Thanks Adrian for the game! "  -- Siddhartha

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentDavid Bryan bt Matthew Cornell (Oct 7) 6-0, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "A match of 2 sets this one!! I luckily enough, raced away with the first set with everything coming off the racket perfect. Come the second though, Matthew has found his range, was serving very well, hitting great passing shots and I couldn't find a winner for love nor money!! Matthew went 4-1 quickly and I had to dig deep to claw the set back to a tie breaker, which luckily went my way. Thank you for the game and the invite down to Esher to play under the lights. Good luck with the remaining games."  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Bryan bt Vadim Larin (Sep 30) 4-6, 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Firstly what a lovely facility the new All England Tennis Club Community Centre is, and about time that there is public access indoor courts!!! Back to the match. A very topsee tervy first set that only had 3 holds of serve (guess we were both not use to the perfect conditions!!). Vadim though played very well and raced to a 4-1 lead and then held out to take the first. Then my serve and ground strokes started to fire and Vadim consistency dropped and allowed me to take the second quickly. The third was a tight start, but once I got ahead I was able to hold out. Great match, thank you Vadim and great suggestion playing there."  -- David
Reveal CommentPaul Murana bt Ross Mcvey (Sep 13) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Ross is a good player with incredible running speed, he is a bit out of practice at the moment but we still enjoyed decent, competitive rallies. The first set was over quite quickly but by the second set things became much tighter. Thank you for the match and I look forward to playing you again in a future round."  -- Paul
Ali Wood bt David Bryan (Sep 12) 6-1, 7-5
Vadim Larin bt Matthew Cornell (Sep 11) 6-1, 6-3
Reveal CommentPaul Murana bt David Bryan (Sep 10) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Our planned match got rained off so we played this match indoors. David applied a lot of pressure throughout with his pace and strong forehand. I took a strong lead in the second set and had match points at 5-2, but I was not able to convert and David won the next two games which put my final service game under significant pressure. A fun and tight match that was swung on account of a few unforced errors."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentDavid Bryan bt Ross Mcvey (Sep 3) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely game this evening, in some actual summer sunshine!!! The score line flattered me slightly as Ross was amazing at getting the ball back and forcing 1 more shot, and a number of the games went to deuce. I was just able to pinch the winning points at the right time. Thank you for the game Ross and good luck."  -- David

Reveal CommentTom Shrives bt Ben Coyle (Oct 9) 4-6, 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Top match. So so even that most games went to deuce and each set was approx. 1 hour long! I started like a rocket with good serves and a few strong overheads to go 4-1 up before Ben really settled into it and played near perfect tennis for a little bit, taking 5 games in a row to win the set 6-4. The second set was a bit bonkers with 11 breaks of serve in a row (and we were both serving okay!). I snuck a hold at the end to close out the set. Final set was again close but I was fortunate to get a couple of games clear midway through and just about hang on. Last game went to deuce a few times though (naturally). Cheers Ben, great opponent. Hope to play again soon. Good luck in your next match. "  -- Tom

Player Comments:

  • "This was our second time facing one another in the league, the first one taking place back in May. I’m glad to have avenged that loss today in what was a very competitive, enjoyable match, played in great spirits with fantastic sportsmanship throughout. I took a quick lead in the first set with some aggressive net play, the second set Paul upped his level significantly and hit some impeccable lobs and forehands down the line. I played higher percentage tennis and cut out some of the unforced errors in the third and managed to close it out. As with any great tennis match the momentum ebbed and flowed with both of us having moments on top so I’m glad to have got the win. I look forward to playing on the clay next time Paul. "  -- Ben

I was glad to win the second set swiftly given the heat! A really enjoyable match. Well played Giuseppe and best of luck in remaining matches. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentBen Coyle bt David Hurrell (Sep 7) 4-6, 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Beautiful late summer’s evening for tennis. David took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first set with some great passing shots and use of the slice. Took me a while to get the hang of his leftie serve as well. I held after the early break but couldn’t get one back until 5-3 when I scraped it. Only to immediately lose my serve in the next game and David to close out the set 6-4. Thankfully I’d built a little momentum by that point and shaken off some early nerves to comfortably win the second set. Third set was a tighter affair but I did get the early break in the first game which carried me through for a 6-3 win. Some top shotmaking from both of us today which led to a very enjoyable, competitive match. Good luck with the rest of the league."  -- Ben

However, I managed to serve well and consistently, which proved to be the key to the victory. Thanks for a great match Nadeem and good luck for your remaining contest. Player Comments:

  • "Dotun and I played our match on quite a hot day so I was lucky it didn’t go to three sets. His serve let him down today, but once he got in his stride, he was hitting great shots. I was getting nervous when he broke me in the opening game of the first set (and almost did the same in the third game) but I somehow managed to hold on and win. Lovely to meet you Dotun, and hope we get to play again soon!"  -- Siobhan

Player Comments:

  • "This is the first time I have joined a league and my very first game. Mirko and I were very evenly matched. I stormed ahead 5-2 and then Mirko made a come-back and took the set to a tie-break. I eventually won 7-3 on the tie break. We started the 2nd set but had to stop at 2-2 due to it getting dark. To be continued..."  -- Nadeem
  • "We finished our match today. The second set was very evenly matched. A few school boy errors allowed Mirko to break my serve and take the second set. In the third set, I was up against some very strong serves from Mirko. Despite acing me at least twice and winning a number of points with some very slick slicing I was able to keep my cool and win the match. Thanks for the great game. I look forward to playing you again. Good luck in your other matches." -- Nadeem

  • "Hi Javier, thanks for the great friendly game. We had some really good rallies on a lovely re-surfaced tennis court with new nets. The first set we were fairly evenly matched and was hard fought. But sadly the second set didn't go my way and was over fairly quickly. I managed to get some good shots in but you were the better player. Well done! We had plenty of time left on our court booking so we played a friendly unofficial 3rd set which I managed to play much better. Hopefully we will find time to play each other again. Good luck with the rest of your matches." -- Nadeem

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great match. We both fought hard for the first set with lots of breaks of serve but I managed to pull through in the end. We were both pretty tired afterwards and the second set luckily went my way. Thanks for playing Nadeem, look forward to a rematch some time soon!"  -- Siobhan
  • "Hi Siobhan, thanks for a great game. The first set was quite evenly matched. We had some great rallies. I remember one of the games had a 12 point deuce. We kept battling it out with no-one quite able to win the advantage point. I think the 1st set took us over an hour to play. At the beginning of the second set the sun decided to poke it's head out from behind the clouds blinding me each time it was my service. Combined with Siobhan's precision placing of the ball, she had me running all over the court and quickly finished me off. Well done! I really enjoyed the game and hope that we can play again sometime." -- Nadeem

Reveal CommentWilliam Essex bt Siobhan Hennessy (Aug 22) 7-6 (7-4), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "This was a fun match on a damp slippery court. I started off well taking the 1st 4 games but Siobhan came back strongly and began hitting winners eventually getting to a 6-5 lead in the set while errors had crept into my game. In the tie break I was lucky to be starting off on the less slippery side of the court without the sun in my eyes. The start of the second set saw some exciting rallies, running from side to side, one of which left me flat on my back following quite a hard fall but luckily ungrazed and unhurt. I nearly repeated the trick a few rallies later! Eventually I took the 2nd set but was lucky on a number of shots catching the net and just landing the right side.Lovely to meet you Siobhan- good luck for your remaining matches!"  -- William
