Revision information
Provide an explanation of the changes you are making. This will help other authors understand your motivations.

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Getting started

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

For everything you need to know before you get started see the FAQs and review the Rules and Regulations, which all players agree to adhere to when playing in the leagues.

If there is anything else you need help with get in contact with Nigel, Sally and the team who will be happy to help!

I've really really enjoyed taking part in the first round, meeting a great bunch of tennis players who I look forward to playing again

Great game. Enjoying my tennis as always :)

Phil Coulter

"I enjoyed playing competitive tennis singles matches against good people at Arnos Park, a venue where I played in excess of 100 football matches. Thanks again to everybody involved in making Local Tennis Leagues the best run sporting organisation I am involved with, or aware of,"

An excellent early summer round where the sun shone and the tennis flowed (three quarters of all the matches were played)... really hope you enjoyed it. If you can, please do spread the word. It would also be great to have a few more women playing and maybe add another group as the summer hots up!

Group Summary:

Brilliant debut for Stephen who proved himself not only to be a fine tennis player, but a fine match scheduler! Stephen was one of four players in the group to earn bonus points... Well done too to old hand Uche who nicely improved his standing since the previous round to earn the runner up spot.

Player Comments:

  • My 1st match ever in the league and Really enjoyed it but nervous at first - made worse when I was put in the top Group! Discovering Atanas plays 4 times a week had me thinking what have I got myself into lol. Atanas outplayed me in the first set and won 6-3. In the second set I started well and kept in front and found myself somehow, I don't know 5-2 up and had my chances but well done to Atanas - he turned it around and won the game and then went up a couple of gears won the next 2 games to make 5-5. I found some energy to take the next 6-5. Again in the next I had set points but well played Atanas he stepped up again and ending winning the game and then tie break. So thanks to Antanas for a good game" -- Brian

Group Summary:

What a fantastic group and a nail biting finish. Tim earns top spot in part through securing bonus points, but also because of his competitiveness in his match with runner-up Alex. Even though Alex won the head to head, the set conceded earned Tim a crucial point. Special mention too to Hannah who may have ended up at the bottom of the table but played a crucial role in the outcome of the group by beating Alex! Great tennis all round - and than you for all the commentaries.

Final Rankings:

  1. Tim Davis 8.1 [W5, L1] 13 includes 2 bonus points WINNER
  2. Alex Papas 9.1 [W5, L1] 10 RUNNER UP

Player Comments:

  • "Due to a whole host of different reasons (forgetting we were playing, broken strings) this match ended up being played over 3 sessions. And even then a work emergency meant we had to play a tie break in lieu of the third set. Probably just as well as it was so hot on the last session I'm not sure either of us would have survived a final set. As it is I came out on top in the end, but it really could have been either of us. Most games were close, and so was the tie break."  -- Robin

Player Comments:

  • "The match was played at Mayfield Sports Club on Tuesday morning. The match score does not reflect the nature of the games which were hard fought. Many of the games went to deuce and I was fortunate at times to gain the upper hand. Hannah has a very sound technique to her game and is just lacking in some match experience. An enjoyable match which shows one of the many benefits of this league in bringing together a young student in Hannah together with someone like myself who is now retired!"  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable Tennis, with Hannah hitting some lovely deep placed backhand winners down the line. We had a really good knock up and there were some good rallies despite a slippery court and the balls picking up moisture and algae from the Oakwood park courts, weighing them down and making them ever darker. We had to switch to a different set of balls after first set. We only just managed to avoid the rain and I only called her Laura once - probably as I tried to avoid that slip up. She managed to get ahead 3-2 in the second set but it may have been my experience of playing on those courts + conditions that gave me the overall edge. "  -- Tim

Reveal CommentTim Davis bt Robin Datta (Apr 17) 6-2, 0-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Longest match with Robin to date and I struggled to be effective against the short low placed balls that landed mid court. These put me in all sorts of difficulties, mostly where I had to cover a lot of ground to reach the ball and then had to do something with this very low softer paced ball, that was very hard to generate my own pace on the run against such a low ball. Anything short of a perfectly placed shot put Robing at an advantage and I couldnt seem to find the solution to getting a game for a while. This was the nature of the second set which he said he enjoyed! The third set was close for a while with Robin going 4 -3 ahead from 1-3 down. He then lost a bit of form and I swept it away. "  -- Tim
Reveal CommentDavid McLean bt Simon Birke (Apr 17) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Match played at Oakwood on a dry cloudy day but with little wind. An excellent match with many games going to deuce. The second set in particular was very tight with Simon going into a 3-1 lead but I managed to get back to 4-3. Simon came back again to take a 5-4 lead but I was able to dig deep and recover to take the second set 7-5. "  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "The first set passed quickly and uneventfully, especially as the net cord appeared determined to give me a helping hand. That, after that, a two set match should take 2 hours speaks volumes for the hard-fought character of the second set. With both players' strengths being in placement and persistence rather than power, epic rallies ensued. When I was 4-5 and 0-40 down on Christopher J's serve a third set loomed large, but I somehow managed to claw my way back and avoid that distinctly unwelcome possibility."  -- Chris

Group Summary:

It's been a while since Simon topped the podium and he earned his group victory this time the hard way! Not for Simon the cushion of bonus points, instead just four very solid wins. It would have been interesting to see if Hugo, unbeaten in the matches he played, could have mounted even more of a challenge but he didn't meet Simon on court this time and thanks in part to expert scheduling Laura was able to claim the runner up spot.
