  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is

  • For everybody!

  • Players are grouped by ability, so you play only people of a roughly similar level

  • The winner of each group is the player with the most points at the end of the round

Player Comments:

  • "Welcome to the league Dan and thanks for booking the club court. Dan took the first set convincingly, hitting forehand winners and a number of aces with his fast & low serve out wide. The second set was very even and could have gone either way before John took the third as Dan made a few more errors as both of us tired. A good and even match on a cold but bright Autumn day. Player Comments:

  • "Bright and low autumn sun coupled with a gusting wind and slippery baseline made for difficult conditions at Arnos Park. Two close sets were shared one each before Jonathan's superior consistency and hitting in the third secured him the win. Thanks for an enjoyable match."  -- John
George Zenonos bt Jonathan Jones (Oct 9) 6-0, 7-6 (7-4)
Reveal CommentJohn Williams bt Graham Baker (Oct 8) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • It's always nice to meet new opponents in the league and John and Graham played out a very close first set. Good rallies continued throughout the second but with Graham perhaps feeling the effects of a recent cold towards the end, John was able to clinch the victory. An enjoyable match to kick off the new round. - John

Match Results:

Reveal CommentKevin Lynch bt Christopher Jacovou (Nov 19) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Played over two sessions, six days apart at different venues! A close first set as it took me a while to realise playing cross court from my backhand to his left-handed forehand was not a good idea! The first set also gets my vote for shot of this round, Chris hitting a clean winner with his back to the net from an attempted lob by me. Worth the admission fee alone!"  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentKamran Bashir bt Chris Ward (Nov 13) 6-3, 2-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We played on a wet surface which wasn't ideal but still managed to have a tight game. I started strongly to win the first set but Chris played really well to take the match to the third set. There were many tight games and Chris played some great shots and wrong-footed me quite brilliantly on few occasions...but thankfully i managed to come out strongly. Well played Chris, looking forward to playing again.. "  -- Kamran
Reveal CommentChris Ward bt Christopher Jacovou (Nov 7) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable, if chilly, run-around under lights at New River."  -- Chris
Reveal CommentKevin Lynch bt Kamran Bashir (Nov 5) 5-7, 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Kamran kindly invited me to his club where we played indoors - hearing but not seeing the various Guy Fawkes fireworks around Wood Green. Initially I struggled with the pace and accuracy of some of Kamran's play - for quite a few shots I was a spectator as another forehand hit the base or tramline. The first two sets were close affairs and a deciding set was the fairest outcome. Unfortunately for Kamran, his accuracy waned in the final set - those shots which were landing for winners in the first two sets started to miss their target. However he still managed to save one match point - another well hit shot clipping the line. I was relieved to eventually close it out. "  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentTim Davis bt Chris Ward (Nov 5) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "It is always a pleasure to play Tim- though perhaps given the score I may be forgiven the hope that he may soon be promoted to the higher group that his classily effective tennis richly deserves!!"  -- Chris
Reveal CommentKevin Lynch bt Laurynas Jurkonis (Oct 30) 7-5, 2-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A close contest at a foggy Arnos Park. Laurynas had a set point at 5-4 in the first which I managed to save and go on to win the set. Laurynas took the second set comfortably but the turning point was in the final set when a mishit shot by me on game point gave me a 4-2 lead. A good spirited and enjoyable match. "  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentTim Davis bt Laurynas Jurkonis (Oct 22) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "I like to think I helped Laurynas to improve his service game as we often seemed to reach juice when he served and there was one game when it must have passed about 20 juices. Surely the intense workout will help him as the round continues........?"  -- Tim
Reveal CommentLaurynas Jurkonis bt Kamran Bashir (Oct 12) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • Kamran treated me to some indoor tennis courts at the New River sports centre, which is great venue. I hadn't appreciated the cooling effect playing outside provides, thus was out of breath after the first couple of games and had to adjust my pace. It was a great, very intense game. Kamran put up a good fight with very consistent, fast returns. I look forward to our next match. - Laurynas

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentLaurynas Jurkonis bt Chris Ward (Oct 9) 3-6, 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • Great match! Weather was beautiful with a bit of sun coming out some times, the slight wind did introduce some uncertainty at some points in the game. Some good, long and patient rallies were played. I look forward to the next round to play Chris again. - Laurynas
Reveal CommentKamran Bashir bt Christopher Jacovou (Oct 8) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • very enjoyable game, some really good rallies!! Initially it looked like a one way traffic but Chris came back (from behind) in the second set to take the match to the last set. Well played Chris!! - Kamran
Reveal CommentTim Davis bt Simon Grant (Oct 2) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • Great to get the game in early on a Sunday and we had some interesting points chasing after various drop shots that became increasingly frequent and not always the shot of choice, but sometimes all that you could do to get a raquet under the balls as they picked up more and more mosture from the damp greenish courts. I think probably two days without rain and they might lose that dampness imparting into the ball. Enyoyable playing Simon and he does like to get on with the game -Isn't that dog yapping right behind you off putting, shall I wait before serving - no, they put up with all the cheering at Wimbledon, carry on. - Tim
Reveal CommentChris Ward bt Kevin Lynch (Oct 2) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • Another great match with Kevin - especially the first set, which took over an hour and was filled with entertaining rallies as both players sought to accomplish through subtlety what we were unlikely to achieve through weight of shot. - Chris
Reveal CommentLaurynas Jurkonis bt Christopher Jacovou (Oct 2) 7-5, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • Beautiful weather for a game. The match was intense and tiring. Look forward to a rematch. - Laurynas

Group Summary:

Sal played in 2 incredibly tough matches against Veselka and Mohamed to take the win in this group - hats off to him (and his opponents)! Bragging rights go to James however, who managed a strong win in his head to head (and only match of the round) against Sal.

Final Rankings:

  1. Sal Syed 9.2 [W2, L1] 6 includes 2 bonus points WINNER

Match Results:

Reveal CommentSal Syed bt Veselka Marinova (Oct 25) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "The courts at Broomfield Park were a little damp today after the morning rain, so it was a bit slippery but that just made the game a little more interesting. It was a really enjoyable match which could have gone either way. Veselka's concentration was affected in the final set when a couple of lads decided to play football in an adjacent court so we had to ask them to move elsewhere, which they reluctantly did. I guess these are the perils of playing in public parks and not at Wimbledon ;-)"  -- Sal
Reveal CommentJames Taylor bt Sal Syed (Oct 24) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The score says it all really, though I did have chances to win a few more games ... if I hadn't made so many unforced errors. Looking forward to playing more games with James in next rounds (as well as casual games). "  -- Sal
