Reveal CommentJames Rafferty bt Tom Nolan (Apr 30) 6-3, 2-6, [11-9]

Player Comments:

  • "This is another match at Brightwell I probably should have lost! Both times the courts have played very slow and I have struggled to create pace or deal with 'spinny', slow balls. This wasn't too much of a problem in the 1st set: I played steady enough and well enough to take it. Tom gained in confidence in the 2nd set, moved better, and my level dropped. Tom deserved to take the match into a decider. We were playing under the lights with time limited tokens so mutually agreed to play a championship tiebreak. This was as close as it could get and somehow I ended up taking it. Thank you, Tom, for inviting me to play at your club and for being a pleasant host."  -- James

Reveal CommentJames Rafferty bt Neil Eleazar (Apr 18) 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This was such a battle, and played in the best of spirits. Neal settled straight away: I could not find rhythm or pace and was beaten emphatically in the first set. Neal has a variety of spins and trajectories which I had to figure out. The second set showcased better tennis all round and had plenty of scoreboard drama. I went 3-0 up, served for the set at 5-4 and 6-5 before being pegged back into a tiebreak. Neal had match points at 6-4 up...how I got out of that, who knows. The third set saw me pull away mainly because the physical battle was taking its toll. Neal is a natural competitor but remains gracious with it. He made me feel very welcome at his club and the conditions were glorious."  -- James

Player Comments:

  • "Ominously dark clouds overhead meant our match had an extra sense of urgency to it. A fun match with some good rallies and good winners from both players. A more even match than the score might suggest. Less than 15 minutes after we finished, the heavens opened! "  -- Barrie
Reveal CommentSergey Anishchanka bt Leza Milligan (May 17) 6-2, 6-4

Reveal CommentTim Thornton bt Graham Davies (May 14) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A competitive match with several momentum shifts. From 1-4 in the first set Graham won a marathon service game and went on to level at 4-4. I went 5-0 up in the second set before Graham hit back, and I was happy just to get over the line in the end!"  -- Tim
Reveal CommentBarrie Pleasance bt Tony Haddad (May 13) 7-6 (10-8), 2-1 Tony Haddad Retired

Player Comments:

  • "Another tight, fun match with Tony, played in great spirit. There was very good court coverage from both players and lots of games went to deuce. A late break gave me the chance to serve for the set, but a selection of crisp winners from Tony levelled it back up again. Neither side could make a decisive breakthrough, so a tie break was needed. Both players had multiple chances, but I was lucky enough to claim the set. Tony sadly picked up an injury, tried valiantly to play through it, but after it worsened in the second set, was unable to continue. Tony played a great match and it could easily have been a different result, were it not for the injury. "  -- Barrie
Reveal CommentLeza Milligan bt Gerard McGinty (May 10) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Leza started very strongly, and she quickly and deservedly went 3-1 up. After that every game in the first set was a battle with lots of deuces. Luckily for me the second set was easier, though Leza saved several match points in the last two games. Thanks for arranging the match Leza, it was great to meet you and I look forward to playing you again soon!"  -- Tim

  • "A hugely enjoyable topsy-turvy match that really could have gone either way. I dont think I've ever covered so much court space in two sets!! Welcome to the league Leza... Next time I'll be sure to have 3 shredded wheat so I can keep up with you more easily. "  -- Graham
Reveal CommentTony Haddad bt Leza Milligan (Apr 16) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks for the game Lesa. Scoreline somewhat hides the fact that there were many long rallies throughout and quite a few games that went to deuce."  -- Tony
