Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"I really enjoyed the experience of playing in the league. It was exactly what I was looking for, regular games, a good workout and that bit of competition to spur you on. I will definitely continue to play in the league and have encouraged a couple of friends to throw their hats in the ring (or racquets on court). I feel that my game has improved because of playing in the league and hope this continues also,"

Robert Graha

"Really enjoyed playing in Group 3. I feel I've improved my game since I first joined the league a few years ago, still got a lot to learn though. Playing in Group 2 will certainly be a tough test, though I'm looking forward to it,"

Stewart Campbell

"A great event - its definitely not about winning but meeting new people who share the same passion for the sport and above all who love having fun on the tennis court. Thank you Sally and Nigel.", Stephen Reynolds

Stephen Reynolds

"Absolutely loved it. Great idea, and fantastic to meet new players from the area. Looking forward to the next round!  Thanks!",

Ross Burnside

"The round for me was very enjoyable I enjoyed playing and meeting new people and making new friends to play tennis with, I can't wait to get started again on January 14th in the next round,"
Cameron Sim

"Really glad I joined. Great way to meet new players,"

Brian Rainey

Collapse AllGlasgow Singles - Round 40 | Thursday 11 April 2019 to Wednesday 5 June 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 8 May 2019)

Nearly 70 per cent of matches were played in this, the fortieth edition of the Glasgow Tennis League. What a great way to prove that tennis life at least is only just beginning at 40! Thank you all for making the league such as success. Your commitment to fair-minded friendly play has made this league work and your matches and generous commentaries are a testament to your achievement. We were even rewarded with some balmy early summer evening round. Can't wait till the next one!

Group Summary:

Somewhere out there there is a challenger who will give Stephen a run for his money, but this time, despite the hard work of five valiant contenders, our serial Group One winner triumphs again. Magnificent. The battle for second place turned out to be a contest between Daud and Mathias. While Mathias got the better of Daud in their head-to-head - a thrilling three-setter - Daud played and won one more match and that, together with the set won against Mathias was enough to give him silver on points! Right then... know someone who can take on Stephen? Though Daud didn't get the opportunity this time let's hope he can lead the challenge next time!

Reveal CommentTyson Kloepper bt Jonathan Nicholls (Jun 5) 2-6, 7-5, [10-8]

Player Comments:

  • "What a match against Jonny. We had a good start to the match but Jonny ended up playing the right balls at the right time, enabling to secure the first set rather comfortably. After swapping courts for the second set, it first looked like it is continuing the same way the first set ended, however, I managed to get a bit lucky and break him in the first game. From then on, it was a hard fought game with great rallies and shots on both sides, this time with me being on the lucky end. Due to the weather conditions we then decided on a match time break. It looked like I would take it home rather comfortably but again, Jonny came back and made it a very close match in the end. It really could have gone either way, very much enjoyed playing ! I thought Mathias hit some cracking winners, especially on the backhand side and I don’t think he missed one overhead. Group Summary:

Nicholas (Group Three winner last time) picked up from where he left off to dominate Group Two and win it without dropping a set. Does Group One know what it is in for? As the ripples of applause for Nicholas's win die away, time to turn to the great battle for second place which all came down to Alastair and Donald's head-to-head. This was such an epic that Alastair had to resort to moon-ball tactics to buy a little time - but it was worth it to get the three-set victory! A group full of good tennis.

Match Results:

Donald Fraser bt Neel Das (May 31) Walkover
Reveal CommentJohn Currie bt Elise Rankin (May 28) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A tight first set whichhad five breaks of serve could have went either way but luckily enough for me I just managed to take it. The second set almost felt like it was going to be the same but Elise hit long as she was trying to play through an ongoing injury. A lovely night for tennis too, I hope to play against Elise again when she's back to her best."  -- John
Reveal CommentAlastair Paul bt Anna Green (May 27) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another match where the score doesn't tell the story. Anna has all the shots, moved around the court well but suffered from a slight injury which hindered her a bit. Grinding out the first three games of the match allowed me to relax which I think is where I got the set won. Anna relaxed more in the second set which made I tightened up a bit. That's tennis. Good luck Anna."  -- Alastair
Reveal CommentNicholas Doran bt Elise Rankin (May 22) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Perfect conditions at QP. A few lucky net calls and some unorthodox, unplanned shots provided me with an early lead which I managed to hang onto. Elise kept pushing throughout and the majority of games went to juice. Fortunately my luck held out throughout and managed to scrap a W. Thanks for the game Elise and good luck with the rest of your matches. "  -- Nicholas
Reveal CommentElise Rankin bt Alastair Paul (May 21) 3-6, 6-3, 7-6

Player Comments:

  • "Epic match with long rallies and a huge variety of shots, both players making good use of the full court. It was one of those matches that could have gone either way. Ally had match points in the third set but I managed to bring it back to a tie break and secure the win in the end. A really fun match and a real test of stamina!"  -- Elise
Reveal CommentMarc Connor bt Anna Green (May 19) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good game at Queens Park. Good luck with the rest. "  -- Marc
Reveal CommentNicholas Doran bt Anna Green (May 14) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A glorious evening in QP with perfect conditions. Despite the scoreline, the match was closer than it would suggest. Anna had a lot of game points but when this happened I always turned up the pressure and went for everything I could, luckily I managed to get away with it, otherwise the result would have have been very different. Thanks for the game Anna and good luck on your remaining matches."  -- Nicholas
Reveal CommentDonald Fraser bt Anna Green (May 12) 4-6, 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable match played in perfect sunny conditions. At times it felt like Dustin Brown vs Nadal, with both of us playing the part of Dustin Brown. Several times we were both at net and trying to improvise as best we can. Anna has a great reach at net and often got her racket to a ball which I thought I had hit for a clean winner. The match had many great shots and many not so great shots from us both, but that just added to the fun. You are a great all court player Anna and I hope to play you again soon."  -- Donald
Reveal CommentDonald Fraser bt John Currie (May 6) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "I think my serve-volley game did not suit John's playing style today. His tactic of throwing up a lob to the serve-volley did not work for him in the end. After the match we played another set, which I managed to win, with a winning volley, 8-6 in the tie-breaker. Thanks for the hit John."  -- Donald
Reveal CommentAlastair Paul bt John Currie (May 5) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "We've played a hundred sets and it's about 50-50 so it was anyone's guess who would win today. My turn as it turned out today but we played an extra set which John won 6-4. That's tennis. Your turn to beat me next no doubt John"  -- Alastair
Reveal CommentNicholas Doran bt John Currie (May 5) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A beautiful evening in QP for tennis. Despite a slow start, John came back fighting in the second. An epic set where nothing was for free and nothing was set in stone. Thanks for the great game John and good luck on your upcoming matches!"  -- Nicholas
Reveal CommentDonald Fraser bt Marc Connor (May 3) 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "A tight match which could have gone either way and luckily it went my way. Marc had four set points in the first set. I lost serve in the opening game of the second set and there were then fourteen holds of serve in a row. The third set had one break apiece. Several times in the match, Marc made a fantastic get off a difficult ball and would have made any highlight reel."  -- Donald
Reveal CommentNicholas Doran bt Neel Das (May 3) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A tough match in the beautiful courts at Bearsden. Despite an early lead, Neel kept coming back again and again with some strong forehands. After some shaky games, finally managed to close it out. Thanks for the great game Neel! "  -- Nicholas
  • "Well played Nick, solid as a rock, good luck in your remaining matches," -- Neel

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAlastair Paul bt Donald Fraser (Apr 29) 6-4, 5-7, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another epic battle with Donald. Tight games, long rallies and a few times I had to loop the ball in the air for a rest mid rally. We really made one another word hard for our points. Good luck with your remaining matches."  -- Alastair
Reveal CommentNicholas Doran bt Alastair Paul (Apr 24) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Fair enough result. Beaten by a better player but glad my opponent had to work hard for it. Some good rallies and enjoyed the rain free sets. Good luck in the next matches."  -- Alastair
  • "A very pleasant match at Drumchapel. After a shaky start for the both of us we got into our stride and had some really good rallies. TY." Nicholas
Reveal CommentAlastair Paul bt Neel Das (Apr 23) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Score flattered me. Neel has all the shots technically but due to lack of recent matches his shots were just missing the lines whereas I've managed to play regularly all winter. Happy with the way I played and the clay surface appears to suit my game. The rally for the first point of the match was immense with drop shots, lobs, volleys, everything. Good luck with the remaining matches."  -- Alastair
  • "Very enjoyable match despite the score. Alastair didn’t miss anything and played so intelligently. Best wishes for remaining matches." Neel
Reveal CommentElise Rankin bt Donald Fraser (Apr 22) 7-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable game of tennis despite somewhat sweltering conditions! The first set was tight with lots of long rallies. Donald had a couple of set points but I managed to hold on to secure the set in a tie break, 6-3, then kept the momentum to secure the second set just in time before our court was up!"  -- Elise

  • "Another beautiful day at QP. Perfect conditions. Thanks for the game Donald. Good luck with upcoming matches."  -- Nicholas
Reveal CommentNicholas Doran bt Marc Connor (Apr 17) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "An ideal setting and perfect weather for tennis in QP. Unfortunately for Marc, my game just seemed to come together in the right places and at the right time. Nevertheless a great game and all the best for your upcoming matches."  -- Nicholas

Group Summary:

Runner up last time, Kevin gave himself the best chance of going one better this time by playing all the available matches. It was a tactic that paid off, as though Craig had an excellent round and beat Kevin in their head-to-head, the match with Gary, although a loss, yielded an important extra point. It was just enough for Kevin to over take Craig in the points race and grab the Group Thee crown. Commiserations to Craig who has to make do with the bragging points for defeating the champ, and well played everyone in a competitive and match-filled group!

Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt Ewan Wilson (May 18) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Great to play Ewan for the first time in what was a very enjoyable match. Ewan is very enthusiastic about his tennis and keen to improve in all areas and although it was a match, it was played in the spirit of mutual improvement. The first set felt more like a 6-3 and was far from easy for me. The second set saw Ewan raise his game and pulled out a 5-2 lead which I had to dig deep to recover from. It could easily have gone to a decider. Ewan was hitting some impressive forehands at times and has all the shots to build a solid game. Thanks for the match - looking forward to our next meeting!"  -- Craig
Reveal CommentGary Devine bt Ewan Wilson (May 14) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great match played in great spirit. Ewan came out flying and broke serve immediately but I fought back well to go onto take a really closely fought set despite the score. Ewan has a really good powerful game but seemed to lose confidence in the second set and really lost his Rhythm. Thanks Ewan for a really enjoyable match and good luck in the rest of your matches Cheers "  -- Gary
Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt Hugh Hart (May 8) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Had an enjoyable game with Hugh and an even more enjoyable series of drills afterwards where we were free to experiment a bit more. The final score matters much less than the spirit in which the game was played. Don’t be discouraged Hugh, you’ve got all the building blocks you need to create a solid game. Just get a bit of coaching to identify easy fixes then keep playing matches with different people to develop your game. Tenacity is the hard part to learn but you’ve got that already! Good luck, and thanks for the game! :)"  -- Craig
Reveal CommentKevin Kelly bt Ewan Wilson (May 8) 5-7, 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with Ewan at Newlands. We started indoors and Ewan just edged a tight first set. We moved outdoors and wind had eased a bit. Second set was close again but I got the break to force s decider. Definitely think the conditions were a factor and an early break put me in control and I managed to keep my serve going to win it. Had we stayed indoors might have been different outcome. Thanks again Ewan and look forward to our next match cheers."  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentKevin Kelly bt Graham Hannah (May 7) 6-4, 3-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another epic match with Graham played over two days in the Scotstoun sweatbox. Lots of long games, lots of long rallies and lots of deuce games. In a rollercoaster first set I came back from 4-2 down to take it 6-4 but Graham found his range in the second to force a decider. After plenty of breaks of serve in the previous two sets I didn't drop my serve in the final set and that saw me over the line. Thanks again for a great match Graham and good luck in your remaining games cheers"  -- Kevin

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt Andy Rhattigan (May 5) 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very tough match with Andy on a lovely sunny Sunday. The first set was a real rollercoaster with both of us having chances to close it out before Andy stuck the killer blow. That was a tough loss for me and left me facing an uphill struggle. The second set was very tight but I managed to just close it out. I found my rhythm in the decider and was serving better. Unfortunately Andy’s intensity dipped a bit at the same time which gave me the advantage and ultimately the win. Thanks Andy - I look forward to our next match! :)"  -- Craig
Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt Graham Hannah (May 4) 6-4, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "A great match with Graham - we had to fight hard for every single point! You can tell how close it was by the fact it took 2.5 hours for 2 sets! I think Graham would agree that this was all about our respective service performance on the day where I enjoyed greater consistency generally. Thoroughly enjoyable but exhausting match. Thanks Graham, and good luck in your other matches!"  -- Craig
Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt Kevin Kelly (May 3) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable game with Kevin on what was initially a lovely sunny evening but became a bit cold and windy in the second half of the match. We both managed to break each other’s serve a few times and it could easily have gone to a tie breaker but I just managed to serve it out. Good luck in your other matches Kevin - thanks for the game! :)"  -- Craig
Reveal CommentGary Devine bt Kevin Kelly (Apr 30) 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Absolute epic Match with Kevin. I got the first break in the opening set but Kevin battled back to take it to a tie break where I went up 3-0 only to lose it 7-5 despite Kevin struggling with a back twinge which paved the way for 6-0 in the second set. Kevin came back opening the third set with an early break and went 2-0. I had to dig deep and managed to win 4 games in a row to go 4-2 and went on to take it 6-3. What a match , we’ll both be suffering for a few days after that. Thanks Kevin for a great match good luck in your remaining matches Cheers "  -- Gary

Sorry James about 2 possibly 3 lucky net cords!! Keep working on the outwide serve and backhand. Very nice to meet you and good luck for remaining fixtures."  -- Ewan

Cheers for the game Andy "  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentGary Devine bt Andy Rhattigan (Apr 24) 6-3, 6-3

Only one break of serve in the first set but the second had some twists as Andy broke first to go 2-1 but I battled back to break twice to go on t take the second 6-3 again. Good luck with your remaining matches thanks "  -- Gary

Group Summary:

Very tough on Muhammad not to walk away with this group after his three-set win against Blair in their head-to-head but in a points chase anything can happen and Blair was able not just to match Muhammad for matches won, but play one more match and grab one more set over all. That great effort makes Blair our well-deserved champ this time, though both are likely to earn promotion. Interestingly third-placed Francisco also won four matches making sure he was in the mix for medals too. Every match had a commentary and that really helps bring the tennis to life!

Group Summary:

Emma and Stuart had one of those half glass full, half glass empty rounds. On the one hand there was plenty of nice tennis played as they battled it out for top spot. On the other, both had to contend with walkovers which are never the most satisfactory way to win a match. Ultimately good scheduling came to the aid of Emma and her campaign earning her the bonus points that would see her draw ahead of Stuart and making up for her loss to the runner up. Mick had five good wins this round but his three-setter against Brian was something special - but that's what happens when you play on a "sunny night at Queen's Park". Not that the other players were exactly in the tennis twilight zone and Glenn and Charles' encounter - effectively the decider for second place - was another excellent three-setter, just edged by Glenn. Well done all.

Group Summary:

This could so easily have been Derek's group but in the end, although he got the better of Raphael on court, Raphael's excellent scheduling (he earned his bonus points) and the point for the set won in his loss to Derek was enough to give him a clear lead at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Gareth who played a commendable five matches equalled Derek on points but unfortunately had to retire in his match against Derek, earns the bronze. Some really nice tennis played in the group so if there is a lesson on all of this, its simply let's have more of it. That way, the race to the finish line would be even more interesting!

First set there were several deuce games I managed to sneak, but I wasn’t able to relax because when Larry whips through his forehand, the topspin can be difficult to deal with. No doubt Larry has plenty of game. The double faults hurt him badly today, and he was a bit tight on some shots. Once he sorts out his mechanics, he’ll be back to winning ways. We had a 30-min hit afterwards, which was a lot closer with us both swinging more freely. Thanks for the hit, Larry. Best of luck for the rest of the round, and I look forward to hitting again soon. Unfortunately for Alan, today he really struggled with certain shots and I punished him by going to it throughout. That said, Alan still caused me plenty of problems with some blistering returns and I got lucky to return some of them, but he broke me twice in the second set and saved two match points on my serve. Having lost to him before after winning the first set, I had to dig deep to close out before he could make a comeback this time. Thanks for the hit, Alan! Group Summary:

Greg continued his run of good form from last round to earn the silver in Group Eight this time. But John went one better, converting a runner's up finish from last time to the group win. Satisfactorily the pair's head-to-head was a great three-setter and John got hold of enough "annoying forehands" to win it. Final set saw near constant deuce games and lots of great rallies in unexpected sunshine. I managed to gain an early break but again Craig fought back to level at 3-3. The next game proved crucial. The first set scoreline doesn't show the closeness of the games as we got to grips with a crosswind that sometimes seemed to deliberately start up when the server tossed the ball up. Second set I was keeping my nose in front before at 3-4 down Gillian stormed back to take the set. The final set was again close, the lead changing four times in the first eight games, with one game involving approx 12 deuce point. Player Comments:

  • "Some good points in very difficult blustery conditions where serving was almost a handicap at times. Good to see you again aniket, all the best"  -- John

Group Summary:

While Gordon showed the way, even managing to grab his bonus points, what this group needed was more tennis. If you want to improve - as well as get fit, lose weight, and who knows, get rich and beautiful too! - there is nothing like getting on court and playing a friendly, competitive tennis match. Well done to group winner Gordon and runner up this time, Andrew!

Player Comments:

  • "A great hard fought match with Andrew played in some tricky blustery conditions at Queen's Park. For the first half of set one we both held serve, then the second half was spent repeatedly exchanging breaks. I managed to sneak and hold onto an early lead in the tiebreak to take it. The second set looked to be going the same way with breaks exchanged again early on, but I edged some very tight rallies to get over the finish line. Thanks for the match Andrew. Hope to get another hit with you soon. All the best for your other matches."  -- Gordon
Reveal CommentGordon Craig bt Augustin Cacot (May 2) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good match at Kelvingrove on a sometimes gloomy Thursday afternoon. It was Augustin's first league match for some time and he was a wee bit rusty. We still had plenty of tough rallies though and some great winners and wicked wide serves from Augustin hinted at the game that'll be there once he gets back into the groove. Nice to meet you again Augustin. Good luck in your other games."  -- Gordon
Reveal CommentIbrahim Bolarinwa v Andrew Mcdade (Apr 26) 6-2, 1-6, 4-4 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "Close game that could have gone either way. We attempted to complete the match but sadly could not find a time the both of us were free."  -- Ibrahim
Reveal CommentGordon Craig bt Ibrahim Bolarinwa (Apr 17) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Good match with Ibrahim on a lovely sunny, though somewhat breezy, Wednesday evening. Neither of us shone in our service games: Ibrahim's serve was beset by double faults, while mine suffered more from some great court coverage and aggressive play from my opponent that kept upsetting my game plan. I just managed to hold key service games by the skin of my teeth in both sets. If Ibrahim had mastered his serve gremlins I suspect the scoreline would have been much more one sided in his favour. Thanks for a great match and all the best in your other games."  -- Gordon
