Another great round in Glasgow! 165 matches played or 73% of the total possible which is fantastic. There were great match reports and brilliant tennis. Everything you could want! Many thanks and well done all!

Group Summary:

We have almost lost count of how many times Stephen has won this group on the trot - but not quite! This is his 13th consecutive win! You have to go back to round 29, in November 2016, to find another champ and even then, Stephen came second! So very well done, but players are getting closer. Cedric was just one win behind him and Craig one win behind Cedric! Who is going to topple the champ!

Player Comments:

  • "Really fun much with Craig on a drizzly Sunday morning. Craig stormed into a 3-0 lead with some solid serving and returning. One way or the other points were decided relatively quickly in the first set but I was lucky to get back into it in time. In the second set we had both learnt a bit about each others games and some great rallies and games were had, culminating in a long and decisive 9th game that involved six deuces on Craig's serve - if he had got it it would have been his comeback story after being 4-2 down and bringing it to 4-4, but luckily for me I held on and served out the match. A fun game played in very good spirits and good sportsmanship. Thanks Craig."  -- Thomas

Reveal CommentBenjamin Cottin bt Tom Howe (Oct 25) 4-6, 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable game in a cold night at Queen’s Park. It took a while for both of us to settle into our serves and the two first sets were close with each managing an extra break of serve to win them. As the court became a bit more slippery, it seemed to suit my game more in the third set. I was also lucky that Tom’s serve was a bit less consistent as it had caused me some issues in the first two sets. All in all, a pleasant contest and hopefully the first of many!"  -- Benjamin
Reveal CommentFelix Carpenter bt Craig Chamberlain (Oct 23) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable match against Craig - a bit gusty and rainy but nothing we couldn't face with a smile. Though Craig struggled with making his drop shots (I think at least 12 net cords on attempted drop shots!) he found a few astounding forehand winners which I saw sailing past me down the line. A consistent style saw me though. All eclipsed by the great philosophy chat on the way back - thanks a lot for the game Craig."  -- Felix

  • "Despite a troubling forecast the weather was surprisingly nice - dry with moments of blinding sunshine. Kevin found his first serve from the start and had a continuous fighting style which was hard to find consistency against. Some astoundingly hard-fought for rallies made us both smile - an all round fun match - thanks Kevin"  -- Felix

Reveal CommentEdward Doyle bt Craig Chamberlain (Oct 5) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A thoroughly enjoyable match with ups and downs from both of us, played in the best spirit. After somehow managing to come back from a break down to win the first set, Craig began to play some exceptional tennis to take the second set 6-3. I felt that a few sure winners came back with interest and at some Nadal-esque angles. Luckily I managed to serve well in the final set and get a lucky break early on. I'm looking forward to our next meeting already. "  -- Edward
Reveal CommentKevin Kelly bt Edward Doyle (Oct 3) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Epic match with Ed played over two attempts at Queen's Park there was really nothing in it and after I won the first set Ed came back well to take the second and force a decider which we had to come back for. Ed got an early break but I broke back quickly and we both held serve despite a lot of deuce games but at 4-4 I probably had my best serve game and then I was able to break to see it out. Ed went for a lot of shots in the deciding set that were just inches out while I was more defensive and the cautious approach paid off for me. Thanks for a very close game Ed and look forward to our next match." -- Kevin
Reveal CommentFelix Carpenter bt Edward Doyle (Oct 1) 6-1, 6-2

  • "A great match with Ed. A little colder than previous days but Ed had me running around right off the bat. A steadier serve saw me take the lead, though Ed’s heavy topspin forehand gave me pause. All in all a very enjoyable match. - thanks for the game Ed!"  -- Felix

Player Comments:

  • "What a bizarre scoreline! :) The first set felt closer than the score suggests and I’m not quite sure what caused the momentum shift in the second but it was probably down to serve confidence which I fortunately regained in the decider. A very enjoyable match as always with Kevin on a lovely sunny afternoon, although the sun caused us both problems at times. Thanks for the match Kevin - hope to play again soon!"  -- Craig
Anzhela Ivanova bt Benjamin Cottin (Sep 27) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another very enjoyable match with Anji. This time we managed to complete the match but it was far from easy and much closer than the score would suggest. Anji started really strongly and broke my first service game to go 2-0 up but fortunately I managed to get the break back and held my serve after that. Anji played many impressive winners but unfortunately had a few unforced errors as well. Sometimes the toughest matches are against ourselves! I’m sure every one of us has felt that way! :) Thanks for the match Anji, and good luck in the rest of the round. Looking forward to playing at Kelvingrove next time. :)"  -- Craig

Reveal CommentKevin Kelly bt Tom Howe (Sep 20) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable game with Tom in the sun. First set had a lot of Deuce games and a few breaks of serve. I must have had ten set points in the ninth game before finally clinching it. In the second I was 5-1 up and had at least 8 match points but again Tom saved them all and broke. But I was able to serve out and take the match. Thanks again Tom for the game and look forward to our next hit"  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt Benjamin Cottin (Sep 18) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match with Benjamin on a lovely evening at Queen's Park! Both of us had our share of joy and frustration during the match I think it's fair to say. Overall the main difference was just recent match experience as Benjamin is coming back to tennis after many years away. Like I told him, he has the shots but just needs to regain the confidence to use them more often. I don't think it'll take too long either! Thanks for the match!"  -- Craig
Reveal CommentEdward Doyle bt Benjamin Cottin (Sep 17) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A good game of tennis with some nice shots was both players. Ed was the strongest from the baseline and found some lovely passing shots when I had to take the game to the net. He won key points, especially on games with many deuces! An enjoyable evening of tennis despite a loss, I’ll just have to practice harder. Good luck Ed for the rest of the league."  -- Benjamin

Player Comments:

  • "This match should have ended in the second set. John played better, more intelligently with more movement and better shots. I felt I struggled the whole match (even at 5/2 in the third). Somehow the W went my way. Tennis is not a fair sport! On the upside, It was a fun three hours of tennis, with the Scottish weather throwing all its four-seasons at us. Thank you John for the invite! In both sets I was lucky enough to get my nose in front but with the way we were both playing it could have went either way. I had to be on my game today to beat John because of how good he is. Great match mate. I look forward to our next match. All the best in your final match. "  -- Graham

Player Comments:

  • "A great match. It was a joy to play Ewan. The first set was very topsy turvy, with us both losing service games, immediately followed by winning. I managed to edge it. I made fewer mistakes in the second set, but at no point was it comfortable."  -- Craig
Reveal CommentSantiago Matalonga bt Ivan Rolfe (Oct 29) 4-6, 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great two-hour marathon on a cold dry Glasgow day. A left handed player who runs the court back and forth, Ivan took advantage of my unforced (and forced) errors in the first set. Second set I only tried to be more consistent and it went my way. Third set had great rallies and shots from both sides. I think Ivan sevre was let him dien a bit, and that was enough to make the difference in the final set. Thank you for a great match! "  -- Santiago

Second set was so close it could have went either way with a lot of good backhand winners from Craig I managed to stay in the set - got it to a tie breaker and just found enough to take it. A good game played in the sun, wind and greasy tennis court."  -- John

  • "Beautiful day for tennis at Newlands. A very even first set. Ewan took advantage of my unfoced errors and loose balls. I somehow managed to force a tiebreak and win it after 3 set balls. The second set was just too fast. I dont know what changed. I misses a little less, Ewan a little more. Sometimes thats all it takes. I enjoyed the match. We should do a rematch! "  -- Santiago

Second set was a repeat, suddenly I was 5-2 down .. i saved a few match points and broke serve to take momentum and then went on to take the set. Final set was more cagey, but I took early lead and held on to see it out. Great game and look forward to our next friendly. "  -- Ivan

In the first set he hit some regular lovely whipped inside out winners which kept the scoreboard ticking over in his favour. I managed to steady the ship a wee bit and unexpectedly edged the second. No time for set 3! "  -- Blair
  • "Final set played on my home turf at Newlands. We were both a little tentative which probably worked more in my favour as Craig admitted afterwards he wasn't being as aggressive. Still a proper workout and as if to prove his point we played a friendly set in which he returned to his normal game and walked it 6-2. Thanks for coming over Craig. Great hit," -- Blair

So many times I thought I had won the match, such as being 5-3 up in the second set with umpteen match points but I just could not finish the match off. Thankfully I was able to come through in the end but as the score shows it was no easy match. Fantastic come back mate and as per usual a good close, energy sapping, match. First set I got my nose in front even though pretty much every game went to deuce, the second set was the same although Ewan definitely upped his game and the third set was a score that shocked both of us. My serve came alive in the third which made a difference to my overall game play which got me the win. Great catching up with you again Ewan. Group Summary:

Sore legs but great spirits and explosive tennis on Bonfire Night! That was the flavour of group 4, another really busy affair full of cracking matches and aching feet. There was a classic match between the new champ, Rob and runner up Gerard - "two hours of momentum swings, long rallies and some big winners from both players," said Rob - and an even longer 3 hour battle between Kieran and Rob. Credit to Gamal and Eric for playing in 2degreesC and many thanks for all the match reports - every single match had one - and for making this such a great group.

Player Comments:

  • "It was an explosive game right from the start!! But first the lights at Queens Park court 4 were not brilliant so we moved to the upper level. Charles was doing well to keep up and played some good first serves. There were constant flashes throughout with some good lob shots if I came up to the net, whilst we both had to concentrate that night to win our respective games. The explosive nature of the game continued into the 2nd set but momentum was on my side to win more games. Some were quite nice but one went off right above the court with a loud thunder followed pieces of debris raining down. Well it was Fireworks Night after all and we only noticed all the smoke after finishing. Thanks Charles for the game & free fireworks show :-)"  -- Gamal

  • "Great game with Eric today in perfect conditions at Newlands. Eric played brilliantly in the first set and got his tactics spot on. I was able to get more of a flow going and managed to hit more deeper shots and attacked more. Despite some outstanding defence in the third set from Eric I managed to keep going to get the win. Looking forward to playing again Eric!"  -- Gerard

  • "On a night of zombies, ghosts and ghouls it was a welcome retreat to hide inside at Scotstoun!! Kieran was a hard player to beat and his first set had too many errors hence the score. By the 2nd set he was playing better and we were 4-4 at one point. From there it probably could have gone either way. My feet are now killing me from all the running I had to do. Good luck Kieran in round 43 and thanks for the game (my feet excl)."  -- Gamal

  • "The floodlights were on, temperature just 2°C, clocks went back the day before and the game started before we froze to death! First game began evenly going to 40-40 and from there Eric found it difficult to gain momentum. Some of his shots were hit with good spin but the slightly damp ball helped me by reducing its effects. I was able to capitalise on short serves and managed not to do my favourite of hit the return a little too low. Somehow the halloween spirits were on my side for this game."  -- Gamal

It was neck and neck in the 1st set, with literally the width of a racket frame between us. The next two sets were tighter than the score suggests and were great to play. Gerard found the lines a lot and was a demon at the net. Fortunately i found a rhythm and got the job done. Thanks for the game Gerard and enjoy the holiday!"  -- Rob

  • "Great hit with Eric ib a very warm Gorbals Tennis Club. The first set seemed to fly by and then the tennis really began. With long rallies, drop shots and outstanding lobs Eric raced to a 5-1 lead. Fortunately the heat and a patient approach from me paid off and I clawed back to 5-5 bwfore we both held serve and forced a tie break. This went my way but only becauase I was keen to not go to a deciding set so went all out attack. Great to meet you Eric, good luck with your next matches. "  -- Rob

Player Comments:

  • "It was an 8pm start under floodlights and the first set had some close games with Mick's 1st serve being fast and taking that set. In the 2nd too many errors meant the score then became level however there were some long 20+ shot rallies that Mick seemed to win most of. Then into the 3rd decider set and we were both exhausted from previous match games plus this one. It felt at times like the last person standing would be the winner but we both chased after wide angle shots to the bitter end being relieved the pain was FINALLY over at 10:10pm!"  -- Gamal

Reveal CommentRob Elliott bt Mick Mooney (Sep 16) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great hit with Mick at the Gorbals on a warm Monday. Lots of long rallies, with Mick hitting plenty of deep shots and precise angles, so I had to defend a lot and try to keep really patient (which is not my normal way!) It was great to chat throughout about Micks previous times in the league and our enjoyment of tennis in general. I think the difference was probably in serving, unfortunately Mick's serve wasn't as consistent as he wanted it to be, which I'm kind of glad about because when he connected he really connected. Thanks for the game Mick, and good luck with the others, hopefully play you again sometime!"  -- Rob
Reveal CommentRob Elliott bt Charles Cameron (Sep 14) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A cracking game in some pretty blowy conditions at Queens Park this morning. Lots of breaks in the first set and despite the wind Charles was nailing the lob shots, and digging balls out all over the place! After a long set I was pleased the wind died down and I could find my serve to get over the line after some epic rallies throughout. The second set was tighter than the score suggests with Charles keeping me to the back of the court a lot with his consistency. It was great to chat with Charles throughout and finally play at Queens Park. Thanks for the game Charles and have a brill holiday!"  -- Rob

The momentum kept switching in the second set with multiple breaks of serve and looked to be going Aniket's way as he served for it at 6-5 but I just managed to edge a break back to get to the tie break. Reveal CommentRobert Graham bt Gordon Craig (Oct 4) 7-6 (7-4), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Epic first set, managed to get a break up and was serving for the set. Gordon broke back and held his serve to go 6-5 up. One of the longest games I’ve ever played came next with chances on both sides. In the end I held to take it to a tie break. Managed to get a few early points and held out to take the set. The set lasted well over an hour. The second set holding serve was the key, both of us were feeling the effects of the first set. Holding my own serve and getting a couple of early breaks won it for me today. It was a very close match with some great rallies and long tiring games. "  -- Robert

Reveal CommentGordon Craig bt Steven Finnie (Sep 28) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A match played in good spirits at Queen's Park on a lovely evening for tennis. In the first set I managed to stick to an aggressive game plan while Steven's serve and attacking shots were just off at key points. The second set was tougher but looked to be going my way at 4-1 when Steven really tightened up on his serve consistency while also coming up with some lovely winners to fight back to 4-4. I was relieved to edge a deuce point to take it in straight sets as he was gaining momentum and I'm not sure I had the legs for a third set! Thanks for a great match Steven. All the best with your other matches."  -- Gordon

Player Comments:

  • "3 sets, 3 hours. Fantastic! If Robert's serve had been working, this would have been his match. So many good rallies, breaks of serve, backwards and forwards. Played in great spirit. Thank you Robert, I really enjoyed it. But I'm knackered 😁"  -- Greg

Group Summary:

Unusually no one got their bonus points here, so it all came down to the tennis and Tim, who played more matches than anyone else was a very worthy winner. Lawrence gets bragging rights for beating the champ but played only two games so despite winning them both, could not rack up as many points as Tim. Maybe next time, and well played to both.

  • "An enjoyable match on a sunny afternoon at Drumchapel Park. We both had our ups and downs throughout the game, with some very good rallies. The main challenge for us was to hit back drop shots and move from side to side, as the court was a bit wet and the bounce very low, but that added some extra emotion. All the best for the rest of your matches, Alexis - - Eva"  -- Eva
