Collapse AllGlasgow Singles - Round 43 | Thursday 28 November 2019 to Wednesday 5 February 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 1 January 2020)

There are lots of ways to judge success in a round but this one in Glasgow was excellent for many reasons. Not a single player withdrew, every played played at least one match and most played many more. Almost every match came with a generous commentary - oh and the tennis was not too shabby either! 94 matches were played (67%) of the total possible. Very well done one and all!

Group Summary:

So close here! Cedric was within a whisker of knocking long time champ Stephen from his perch, but once again they didn't play each other! What a shame. So, like last time, they finish in first and second place - although they were both undefeated in this round, Stephen played one more match so we will have to wait for another occasion to see who can challenge him. Well done to them and also to Donald, who moves from 5th place last time to 3rd place this time and to everyone for playing so many matches. A great group.

Keep training, with a bit more consistency you will be more dangerous"  -- Cedric

Match Results:

Reveal CommentRob Elliott bt Graham Hannah (Jan 21) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Always good to meet up with Graham, as the match feels less entertaining than the chat. Having played before in the summer I know strong he can be and was lucky play Graham when he was just getting over a bug. We traded early breaks in the first and the second was full of great rallies and shot making - shot of the night... year... decade goes to Graham's defensive, through the legs, lob - sublime. Graham was hampered by a twingey knee later in the 2nd but sportingly played on. Today was my day, last time we played was Graham's cant wait to play again sometime soon! "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentKevin Kelly bt Edward Doyle (Jan 18) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another really enjoyable match with Ed and great to play outdoors at a sunny Queens Park. Ed started really well and I was soon 3-0 down but holding serve in fourth game was a foothold for me and I just edged the first set. Second set we both played really well and I was just lucky to get the break at the right time and a few net cords on big points helped. Ed and I have played five sets in the league and they have all been 6-4. Look forward bro our next 6-4 set Ed and good luck with rest of your games "  -- Kevin

Reveal CommentRob Elliott bt Edward Doyle (Jan 14) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A good hit with Ed tonight at Gorbals. I think I was lucky to get Ed on his first match, as he was hitting the ball well and finding some great net play at points but just not as consistenly as he'd have wanted. Still, some good rallies and games going to deuce which the scoreline hides. Thanks for the game Ed, good luck with the rest. "  -- Rob

Reveal CommentRob Elliott bt Kevin Kelly (Dec 23) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyed a good hit and chat with Kevin today, who put in a lot of tricky shots throughout. Momentum seemed to be with me today and judging by the bounce set we played, which Kevin won 6-4, I should be thankful for that. Still, lots of good rallies and both of us hit some solid serves. Thanks for the game Kevinn and enjoy the festive period when you can! "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentRob Elliott bt Craig Chamberlain (Dec 22) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyed a visit to Newlands so thanks Craig for booking. We lost count of the number ot services breaks in the first set, but oddly only had one deuce throughout. There were some great rallies and I think I was fortunate to play craig when he had a bit of ajln iffy elbow. Despite the score, set two was up a level with big hitting and Craig finding the lines more - fortunately I managed to hold my serve more than in the first at get ovet the line. Cheers for the hit and great workout Craig! Hopefully play again sometime. "  -- Rob
Reveal CommentKevin Kelly bt Marc Connor (Dec 20) 7-6 (7-5), 7-6

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable battle with Marc and as the score suggests it obviously could not have been any closer. Marc saved five set points in the first before I just edged it on a tie-break. Marc broke early and led 4-2 in the second but I got it back to 4-4 only to lose serve again, then break back and another breaker was inevitable. Marc's serve didn't fire in the tiebreak and I was able to see it out. Look forward to our next match Marc and thanks again for the game," -- Kevin
Reveal CommentRob Elliott bt John Currie (Dec 16) 7-5, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great match played over two sweat drenching sessions at Scotstoun. With some initial big serving John took a lead in the first but I managed to reign it back in, including a plucky serve on break point and set point down. The second set went the same as the first with us each breaking serve and finding some big shots when they mattered most. Set 3 was equally dramatic. I managed to take a 5-2 lead but through some steady play John forced a break back before I managed to make the vital break and take the match 6-4. Of course we played an extra set which John took 6-4, showing how evenly we were matched. Thanks for a great hit John, and hopefully play again soon," -- Rob
Reveal CommentKevin Kelly bt John Currie (Dec 8) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game with John at Scotstoun and a lot closer than the score suggests with plenty of deuce games. John's serve wasn't firing as normal and that helped me get a few early breaks. Some good rallies and a match played in great spirit. Thanks for staying behind for a couple of extra sets John and look forward to our next match. Cheers"  -- Kevin
Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt Kevin Kelly (Dec 6) 6-0, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Another enjoyable hit with Kevin. The first set was much closer than the score would suggest, during which Kevin aced me with one of the fastest serves I’ve ever faced! It was like a power-up in a video game! 😅 As usual Kevin is a great counterpuncher and really made me work for the second set which I literally closed out moments before we got knocked off the court. Looking forward to our next match Kevin. Good luck. "  -- Craig

Player Comments:

  • "The match was played in two episodes. The nerve cracking first set would have gone either way. We had an incredibly nail biting game for almost an hour at QP and I won by skin of my teeth. Gamal with a lead of 5-3 needed a break point but unfortunately he couldn't make it and I managed to get three games in a row. Due to slippery and frosty court we stopped our game with a lead of 4-2 to Gamal. I took second set to 5-5 at KG but Gamal won it. For third set I changed my game plan and won. Player Comments:

  • "Cracking match with lots of very close games. A slow start from Peter after a couple of weeks off allowed me to pull out a first set lead of 3-0 but barring a single further break in each set the match went with serve from them on. Peter has a super first serve which is difficult to deal with and he made great use of it. Thanks Peter for hosting and for the company - look forward to playing you again soon. "  -- Graeme
