Collapse AllGlasgow Singles - Round 45 | Thursday 23 July 2020 to Wednesday 16 September 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 19 August 2020)

It was great to see friendly, competitive tennis return to the courts of Glasgow Tennis League and to welcome 10 new players to the fold alongside lots of regulars and returners! There was late summer sunshine to accompany many of your matches and collectively you managed to schedule nearly three quarters of all possible matches which is great. Hopefully we'll have an Indian summer and more sunshine for the next round... hope to see you there!

Group Summary:

This was a fairly quiet group with several matches left unscheduled, but Stephen's 4 wins were enough to see him take the group title, 3 points clear of runner up Rob. Stephen won their head to head in straight sets on a "gorgeous evening at Kelvingrove" while Rob and Florian were also rewarded with sunshine for their rescheduled match, a good competitive 2 setter. Meanwhile Andrew dug deep to save 5 set points in an incredibly close first set against Donald.

Congratulations to Alastair who finished as Group 2 champ by putting together a run of 4 wins and just one defeat to open up a 3 point lead over runner up David. Group Summary:

It was tight at the top of Group 3 with Gary and John both earning 10 points with 3 wins out of 5 matches apiece, so Gary's win in their head to head proved decisive, a "fantastic match played in great spirit in the intense heat". John played well to fend off Scott's challenge in a close 2 setter where his more consistent serve helped him to the win, and he won by a similar scoreline against Craig who was perhaps a little rusty playing his first match post-lockdown!

Match Results:

Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt Zulfqar Ahmed (Sep 14) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable hit with Zulfqar on a beautiful evening at Newlands. As we know, this was Zulfqar's first league round and by his own admission, he's probably a league or two above his current level. However, he was moving well, serving well and makes very few unforced errors. He also clearly enjoys playing which is of course the most important thing! :) So, stick at it Zulfqar and I have no doubt your game will come back to where it was before your injury lay-off. Thanks for the game. "  -- Craig
Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt SCOTT PRENTICE (Sep 4) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable game with Scott on a breezy evening at Newlands. I got off to a good start winning the first 4 or 5 games before Scott got into his stride, winning a couple of games before I managed to close out the set. The start of the second set was quite different with Scott breaking my serve early on and generally battling for every point. We had some fantastic rallies, especially when I was 5-3 up and trying to close out the set. We must have gone deuce-ad a dozen or more times before Scott won to take it to 5-4. One of the most exhausting individual games I can remember playing! I honestly thought we were heading for a tie breaker where it could have gone either way. Thanks Scott - hope to play again soon."  -- Craig

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentCraig Chamberlain bt Gary Devine (Aug 28) 6-4, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Very hard but enjoyable match with Gary played on a lovely evening at Drumchapel. I felt like I played close to my best much of the time which was necessary to get the balls past Gary who covers the court really well. There were a couple of occasions when my form dipped and Gary took full advantage and put me under a lot of pressure. Not much in it overall and I really had to work hard to get over the line in the final set since Gary is a fierce competitor and just keeps coming at you! :) Thanks for the match Gary - looking forward to meeting again. "  -- Craig

Reveal CommentGary Devine bt SCOTT PRENTICE (Aug 18) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Good friendly match with a lot of nice Raleighs. 1st set Scott seemed to be hitting the ball too long but in the 2nd set Scott came back out fighting. All close games but even though I managed to go ahead 4-1 Scott broke my serve for the first time to take it to 4-2. Really had to dig my heels in to see it out at 6-3. Thanks for a great match Scott Good luck in your remaining matches "  -- Gary

Reveal CommentGary Devine bt John Currie (Aug 11) 6-4, 1-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Fantastic match played in great spirit in the intense heat and could really have gone either way. No breaks at 3-3 and looking really even I managed to sneak a break to go on to win 6-4 in the 1st. John absolutely dominated the 2nd to take it 6-1 and continued the form to go 2-0 in the 3rd but John seemed to take a drop in form and I managed to pull my game back to battle through to get 2 breaks and go on to win the match. Definitely one I thought I was going to lose but a fab match to play in. Good luck in your remaining matches John...thanks for a great match."  -- Gary
Reveal CommentJohn Currie bt Craig Chamberlain (Aug 9) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Our matches are always close and today was no exception. First set we broke each others serve early on and even though Craig was 4-1 up it always looked like going the distance. At 5-5 I fortunately managed to hold and then break for the set. Second set was equally as close with lots of great rallies and good play from both player's. This was Craig's first match since lockdown and I feel fortunate to have played him now as he's only going to improve his game. A great workout. Best of luck in your other matches Craig."  -- John
Reveal CommentGary Devine bt Zulfqar Ahmed (Aug 6) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great match played at drumchapel tennis club. First set we both broke each others serve at 5-5 I managed to hold then break for the set but it really could as easily went the other way. Second set was equally as tight with maybe my service game more consistent than Scott's. Thanks for coming through to the drum for the game next time I'll get to your place. "  -- John
Marc Connor v Gary Devine (Aug 1) 6-2, 4-6, 4-2 TBC

Group Summary:

A strong performance from Nadeem saw him finish 3 points clear of Mick at the top of the table, winning all 6 matches to finish the round unbeaten. It wasn't all plain sailing though as he had "an epic fight" with Gamal over 2 sessions and 2 different venues having to abandon play on the first attempt due to heavy rain. However, the group's standout match was an amazing 3 set tussle between Mick and Andy, a full 3 and a half hours of long games and rallies... well played!

Reveal CommentGamal Haddou bt Craig Rutherford (Sep 11) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Firstly a well done to everyone in the group for getting every game completed! This final game with Craig was played with the wind doing it's share to make some shots interesting and there were some hard fought rallies throughout. The very first game had about 10 deuces (just like previous game with Sam) in it and some others were equally close, hence the 2nd set scoreline was not reflective of some of the good shots Craig achieved, incl an unusual serve win (note to self to look up). However too many errors helped me stay ahead. A rain shower interrupted set 3 and called it a day (this website doesn't allow a partial 3rd set score). League round now finally completed."  -- Gamal
Reveal CommentGamal Haddou bt Howard Moshtael (Sep 6) 6-1, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "On a warm Sunday we both suffered from sun glare (rare occurrence in Glasgow in September) but we were finally off, after the round started about 5 weeks ago! The first set was much closer than the score would suggest and Howard got his game back on track in the second, taking us to a tie break. I managed to create a lead of about 4-1 which gave me the momentum to reach 7 and thankfully not endure a deciding set. With some less errors then Howard could have taken the set and it might have been a different outcome. We recovered afterwards with a drink in the Newlands sunshine discussing how modern journalism is so surface based in todays short attention span era (but trivial data overload), voter apathy and society's goal for harmony!"  -- Gamal
Reveal CommentGamal Haddou bt Sam Dance (Sep 6) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "If I was hoping for a gentler game my wishes were dashed after the first game took over 10 mins. Advantage, deuce it rumbled on for ages until thank god someone just won! In the following games Sam played some excellent winning shots down the line. However there were arguably too may errors (exactly, many, LOL) and a few double faults that I was grateful for. I was surprised by Sam's ability to play these very good shots given the previous games but he agreed his form was improving by getting more games in and sadly (for me) I was his last opponent in the round. It was good fortune the 2nd set didn't go to 5-5 when we were on deuce and 5-4 so hopefully we will meet again in the league Sam and have better luck. Keep safe in the NHS. "  -- Gamal
Reveal CommentGamal Haddou bt Andy Rhattigan (Aug 30) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks Andy for the game played on a private Drumchapel court with Covid-19 distancing easily met. A few times in the game I was made to run all around the court, much more than from other opponents, and my only hope was that Andy would make a mistake, which he seldom did. On the shorter points these generally went my way but Andy still defended solidly. In the second set we were close at 5-4 but I was able to win the game and fortunately put an end to all the running. My feet felt like Forest Gump afterwards and I even needed both my drinks (rare). "  -- Gamal

Reveal CommentGamal Haddou bt Mick Mooney (Aug 11) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was a 8:45am start after the lashing overnight rain. The Paisley court was damp but trying to get an evening or w/e booking at Kelvingrove or Queens Pk was impossible. No booking system here (council cut back or efficiency savings) hence it was our venue. And so it was an early start with the locals wondering who plays at that time! Mick tried hard and played some clever shots but somehow I was fit enough to dart around the court and make less errors on the day. 2020 the year of social distancing and touching racquets to say thanks at the end. And a coffee to keep awake for the rest of the morning. Thanks for the game."  -- Gamal

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was pretty close and competitive and would have gone either way. Despite the fact of my legs were killing me due to cycling for good 50 minutes and losing first game I some managed to develop a pressure leading 3-1. Then Howard played his game and equalised the score 3-3. After that the real battle and nerves cracking game began. We both showed our skills and made mistakes. Luckily I been able to cash Howard's mistakes and crossed the milestone. Howard also took me to his garden to have a socially distant cuppa. Wish you all the best Howard for rest of your games and looking forward to seeing you soon 😊. Cheers xx Nadeem"  -- Muhammad

It's a shame we couldn't complete even one set due to continues rain showers. Can't wait to see the result of our final battle. Wish you good luck Gamal. Cheers. Nadeem.xxx"  -- Muhammad
  • ''Thanks for the continued game after we had to abort the 1st with heavy rain. We played at Paisley due to being unable to get a Glasgow booking and it was 25C, tee shirt sticking to you. MN was on form and just powered ahead, I was hoping to get the 2nd set but when that finished at 9pm the light was starting to fade and we didn't need to reschedule for a 3rd game thank-god. Well done'' -- Gamal

The second set was one-way traffic as Pearce levelled the match to set up a deciding tie-break; one which swung both ways. The deciding moment probably came with me leading 8-7, and following a long and tense rally, when a cross-court backhand thankfully found the outer edge of the line. Thanks for the game, Pearce, and look forward to a longer (more exhausting) one next time. "  -- Allan

Group Summary:

Daryl's 6 wins without defeat propelled him to the top of Group 6, finishing 5 points clear of Billy in runner up spot. This was otherwise a fairly low scoring group though unfortunately with several matches left unplayed and Amar as the only player to earn scheduling bonus points. There was exciting tennis in the matches played though including "some good forehands, some questionable serving and top old school volleying" in Billy's 3 set win over Amar and some "excellent lobs and drop shots" in Amar's win over Brian.

Player Comments:

  • "Thank you Miranda for coming out to Renfrew to play. Cracking match played in great spirit in glorious sunshine. Lots of good points with Miranda playing some fine angled passing shots. A nervy tie break could have went either way but I got lucky. Overall a very competitive match but Miranda played the better tennis. Hoping we get a chance to play again in the future."  -- Lawrence
Reveal CommentGreg Soper bt Andrew Carse (Sep 9) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Moved this one indoors due to high winds. This was probably to my advantage as Andrew hadn't played indoors before. Regardless, this was a game of 2 sets. In the first, Andrew's serve never got going and the score reflects that. In the second it was a different story and a much tighter set. Andrew moves around the court very quickly (long legs) and hit some great winning passing shots and running returns. I had my work cut out but managed to see it through. Thanks Andrew. I enjoyed the match."  -- Greg

Player Comments:

  • "Tough match against Greg tonight. Moved indoors due to tropical Glasgow weather. In other words rain. Neither of us played indoors for months so took a bit of getting used to. Greg had me running all over court but I managed to hang in to initial lead and win first set after an hour. One game must have went to deuce 10 times. We were both very tired as we kicked off 2nd set which fortunately for me went well and we managed to finish match within court booking time. Good luck Greg in rest of matches. "  -- Charlie

Player Comments:

  • "3 sets. 3 hours. If I'd had to dig any deeper l'd have reached Australia. Amanda has a deceptively pacy and deep forehand which she plays consistently and accurately. Her backhands aren't too be underestimated either. She wiped me off the court at the beginning of the first set. I managed to claw my way back and redefined the term daylight robbery as I managed to win it. That took 90 minutes. We reconvened 3 days later. She wiped me off the court again in the second set. I was fortunate to get 2 games. I got my nose in front early in the 3rd and managed to hang on to the lead. Wonderful match. Thank you. "  -- Greg
