Group Summary:

Between the 7 participating players this round, there was an excellent turnout, with only 2 matches left unplayed! Kudos all for the effort. It was a close call at the top - so close, in fact, that Terry's bonus points ended up being the deciding factor in his first place victory - despite runner up George narrowly winning the tie break in their head to head, giving him an unbeaten 6 win streak! It just goes to show how those 2 points can sometimes make all the difference. Congratulations both!

Player Comments:

  • "Starting at 8pm the match billed as the league decider was unlikely to last 3 sets. GM started much the stronger, serving well, attacking Terry's second serve and dictating points. Winning the first set 6-1. The second set Terry got a grip on the game as he mixed up his ground strokes reaping the rewards to race to a 3-0 lead. Whilst GM pulled this back it was an extremely tight set which ultimately led to a tie break. Terry started playing much more aggressively and amidst some excellent and incredibly tough rallies deservedly won the tie break 7-4. Due to lack of light it was agreed to complete the match with a deciding tie-break. Terry continued strongly racing to a 4-1 lead before GM turned it around winning 8-6. Great game"  -- George
Reveal CommentAlastair Kidner bt Stephen Brown (Jul 12) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "In ideal cool and dry conditions for tennis this was a match that was a lot tighter than the score first suggests, but was tilted in the balance of Al from the ridiculously one-sided luck during play, with Al getting all the good fortune. This was particularly evident in the first set, with about 7 net calls all going for Al/against Steve. Although Steve managed to get a game on the board, these calls disrupted any momentum that he could get going. The second set was a much higher quality and fairer set. Al got into a 3-1 lead early, but Steve broke back brilliantly to move into a 5-4 lead to move within a game of the set. Al managed to hold serve to force 5-5, before stealing a break and just about seeing out the match. Cheers Steve!"  -- Alastair
Reveal CommentGeorge Milligan bt Matthew Tonry (Jul 10) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Game played in excellent spirit, Matt's shoulder problem whilst nullifying some of the power on his serve did not cost him too many points as both players served well through out. Blustery conditions and low bouncing balls meant consistency in the first set was not at the highest, with GM attacking and taking the first set comfortably. Matt raised his game in the second set seeing multiple entertaining shots, passing shots, lobs and back of the court winners. However GM accelerated away at the end of the set to take the match. Well played Matt. Thanks George"  -- George
Terry Marshall bt Andrea De Baggis (Jul 8) 6-2, 6-4
Reveal CommentStephen Brown bt Matthew Tonry (Jul 8) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a really good game in very hot conditions. We had several rallies and Matt won a few points with some excellent dropshots. Unfortunately Matt's 1st serve wasn't firing as well as it would do normally, due to a recent shoulder injury. Ultimately, I think this was probably the deciding factor. Thanks for the game Matt. Well played "  -- Stephen
Reveal CommentAlastair Kidner bt Matthew Tonry (Jul 6) 3-6, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A tight match in tricky, hot and humid conditions. Both players were happy to admit that neither hit their top form throughout. A scrappy 1st set saw Matt achieve greater consistency amid desperately few held service games, serving out for a 6-3 win. The 2nd set saw better serving but was overall maybe even more error-strewn, with Al just about seeing it over the line with early breaks of serve, despite never being comfortable. The third set saw the 3rd consecutive 6-3 scoreline, but was at least played out in much better form. Points were longer and service games more consistent, with the set time nearly double that of either of the others. Matt didn't deserve to lose, but an early break sealed it for Al. Thanks & well played Matt!"  -- Alastair
Reveal CommentGeorge Milligan bt Andrea De Baggis (Jul 5) 6-0, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very Enjoyable game. GM started strongly moving Andrea well around the court and using the drop shot and lob combination effectively. The second set was much more even as the rallies extended and Andrea's solid ground strokes wore down GM. GM however won a couple of close points at the end to take the set and the match, Well played Andrea."  -- George
Reveal CommentStephen Brown bt Zoran Bokan (Jul 2) 6-0, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very close match in extremely hot weather. After a cautious start, Zoran really got going in the 2nd set and played some terrific winners. Zoran then went 3-0 up in the final set. At this point I thought it was all over, but I managed to hang in there and finally won after 5 close match points. Well played Zoran- a great game."  -- Stephen

Player Comments:

  • "Sunday morning match at Hornfair. GM started strongly and was clinical at the net taking the first set 6-2. The second set was much more even, with Steve's ground strokes starting to dominate and errors creeping into GM'a game. The second could have gone either way but GM won on a tight tie-break. Thanks for the game Steve. "  -- George
Reveal CommentGeorge Milligan bt Zoran Bokan (Jun 25) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Zoran clearly technically the better player and it was very much a case of Zoran - Winner or Zoran - Error as GM scrambled from the back of the court to keep the ball in play. Zoran looked to be getting the upper hand after winning the second set. However, a mix up regarding a court double booking stifled his momentum and he fell 4-0 down in the 3rd set, a deficit which he would never quite recover. Thanks for the game! George"  -- George

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAlastair Kidner bt Zoran Bokan (Jun 20) 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A frankly ridiculously close match played out over 1hr 58mins in 30 degree heat down in Charlton. Zoran took hold of the first set early on with good ground shots to break serve, but Al fought back to lead the set and had set points on his own serve at 6-5. Zoran came back again however, breaking serve and then controlling the tie break to win the first set. The second set was a topsy turvy affair, with both players struggling to hold serve. Zoran stole a march towards the end of the set and had match points to win it at 6-5, but ultimately couldn't quite get over the line with Al seeing the better of good fortune. Al took a lead in the tie break and although Zoran fought back to get level, Al managed to sneak over the line 8-6."
  • "The final set couldn't quite live up to the quality and tension of the first 2 sets, as both players tired. Al broke early to lead 3-0 and although the rest of the set went to serve, Al ultimately saw the match out. The bottom line was undoubtedly that Zoran didn't deserve to lose. Great game all round!" Alastair
Reveal CommentTerry Marshall bt Alastair Kidner (Jun 12) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A high quality game on the whole, with both players at least satisfied with their performances on the day. Playing on Blackheath in almost ideal, if slightly overcast, conditions, the first set went with serve until the final game. Both players made occasional double faults but must have been serving 60-70% first serves in, which meant for a tight set until Al's serve finally allowed Terry to move in for the kill in the final game. A less interesting, more one-sided second set followed, as Terry stole into a 3-0 lead and remained in front as Al's serve faltered towards the end in yet another match. Terry's first serve in particular was excellent at digging him out of trouble, with at least 6 aces across the 2 sets. Well played Terry!" Al

Player Comments:

  • "Playing in the English summer can bring it's challenges. The match started in still yet cloudy conditions and over the course of the two sets we experienced, rain, wind, sun and fittingly finished the match with the backdrop of a full rainbow across Greenwich Park. Alistair and I had incredibly similar styles, both looking to attack the net, whilst both holding back on ground strokes to prevent easy errors. For most of the first set there was nothing to split us with both of us playing good solid points, however in the end I snuck the first set 6 - 4. In the second set a few more errors crept into Alistair's game as I improved my first serve percentage and started to hold serve more comfortably winning set 2, 6- 2" George
  • "A good game in fairly mild conditions in Greenwich park, this match started off fairly evenly but ended up in a comfortable win for George. An even start to the first set saw George steal a march mid-way through the set. Although service games were never fully in the bag for either player George saw out the set confidently, which saw him start the second set with a bang also. With Al's serve gradually declining and George's shot making improving (particularly with his cross-court backhand on song) the second set ended up being more one-sided, with the result never in doubt. Well played and thanks for the game George!" Alastair
