Collapse AllGreenwich Singles - Round 34 | Thursday 18 April 2019 to Wednesday 12 June 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 15 May 2019)
A round that had everything, including a brass band, proves that Greenwich is not only the birthplace of time but the home of friendly, competitive tennis! Well done everyone, nearly 70% of matches were played which is very good going. Thanks for making is so enjoyable. Do spread the word, it would be great to have a bumper entry for the height-of-summer round.
Group Summary:
Adrian wins the group in style with five well-fought matches. All of the leading pack of four earned their bonus points and by earning his, Adrian made sure that he wouldn't be caught out. But in reality it was his five good wins which included two three-setters that allowed him to build his unassailable tally of points. Garth, Ruslan and Carsten all tied on 7 points which means, in the absence of a clear head-to-head record for all three players, we have to look at the sets/games conceded record to break the tie. On that narrow measure, Garth just gets the silver. Excellent tennis everyone.

Adrian Britton bt Carsten Hovestadt (May 23) 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-4Player Comments:
- "good match, think chris was was a bit careful on his movement as he had pulled a muscle a couple of weeks prior, nevertheless some great points, i started off a bit shaky but think the match got better the longer it went, great net play by chris" -- Carsten
Player Comments:
- "I was just a bit more consistent with Carsten also having a bad day at the net. Lots of deuce games that I scraped through as well where on another day Carsten could easily have been the winner - Garth" -- Garth
Player Comments:
- "Another close match with Chris. Looked like it was heading for a third set until Chris’s movement was restricted with a pulled leg muscle. Looking forward to a rematch soon." -- Adrian
Group Summary:
In this league, effort gets rewarded but that still can seem a little unfair! After all Rodrigo put in plenty of effort to secure his five wins, one of which was a particularly tough match with Andrew. Rodrigo also beat Angus in their head-to-head but Angus doesn't give up easily and by playing two more matches than Rodrigo and earning a point for a set one in a match lost, he added one more point to his winning tally. Hats off to our group 2 champ Angus, commiserations to runner-up Rodrigo and well done all for a great round and a great batch of commentaries.

Player Comments:
- "Both players were slightly thrown off their game by the blustery conditions and transfer onto the grass. Andy threw himself heroically into the fray (often literally), but was ultimately overcome by some stolid, if unimaginative, play which benefited from the surface and conditions. " -- Angus
Player Comments:
- "Rodrigo was the worthy winner! I enjoyed the 1st set before wilting in the heat!" -- Giles
Player Comments:
- "Armando played a good game and his 1st serve was very good" -- Giles
Player Comments:
- "Fine, sporting match on a still evening. Angus simply ran out of steam, where Armando maintained his intensity and accuracy to the end. " -- Angus
Player Comments:
- "Pretty even match that couldn't be finished because it got dark. Plenty of deuces and advantages on both sides. The match got more and more intense as the time went by. The sencond set was drainning both mentally and physically for both players. " -- Pablo
Player Comments:
- "We couldn't finish the match . We played 2 sets and will play the third set as soon as we find another slot to both play again. " -- Pablo
- "On 16th May the two players finally managed to play the last set of their game in Hornfair Park Tennis Courts. At the beginning of the set Armando was very focused and Pablo appered to be mentally out of the game. After 3-0 for Armando, Pablo managed to get into the game again and managed to win some games. However the initial advantage gained at the beginning of the set was too large for Pablo to overturn the overall score. Well deserved victory for Armando," -- Pablo:
Player Comments:
- "Intriguing and tactically challenging match when thunderstorms threatened. The score doesn't reflect the many, many deuce games, nor the shifts of momentum. Giles sprinted to rescue a drop shot which was the fastest get seen so far this year. Amazing speed. " -- Angus
Player Comments:
- "Some enjoyable rallies especially in the second set. " -- Giles
Player Comments:
- "Christian has devastating, crisp, topspun shots that sent Angus scuttling like a fool or simply watching in admiration as the first set evaporated in about ten minutes. At the start of the second set, perhaps Christian's concentration dipped on account of the easy victory? Perhaps it was the annoying helicopter? From then on, it was a case of distraction: erratic, limp, disruptive, and oddball shots which helped to undermine Christian's rhythm as Angus threw everything at survival. A freak escape, rather than a replicable victory. " -- Angus
Player Comments:
- "Beautiful, fresh morning for tennis in the park. Angus took full advantage of Anthony's rusty start. (It was a different story in the friendly third set!)" -- Angus
Player Comments:
- "A fine, sporting match under constant threat of rain. The score highly flattering to Angus as most games went close, many back and forth around the deuce. Pablo's strength - particularly that sweeping forehand to the corners - was gaining during the second set. Angus just managed to close out the last couple of games to avoid a third, which would have been decisive in Pablo's favour, we're sure. " -- Angus
Player Comments:
- "A Marathon 2 setter on London marathon day! Lost count of the number of deuces. Highly enjoyable game and one particular rally of 40 shots was immense. Left everything on court but Andrew was just too good on the day. Hope to have another hit sometime....." -- Giles

Giles Thirkettle bt Pablo Lopez (Apr 27) 7-5, 1-6, 7-5Group Summary:
Big welcome to Alex, playing for the first time in the league and showing us all that he was capable of with a haul of five excellent wins to grab gold. We wish him luck as he pushes on up the groups. Marcel's round was not too shabby either and congratulations on a tidy silver. If the top players proved hard to catch they certainly didn't have the monopoly on great tennis and well done all for playing so many of your matches.

Group Summary:
CORRECTION: We discovered, after this round was closed, that Jonathan had not been awarded the correct number of points. This has now been corrected and has resulted in Jonathan pipping Lee to the runner up spot due to his victory in their head to head. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The tennis gods can be cruel and fate seemed to have a hand in depriving Lee of the group win. In the very first match of the round, Lee took on Tiago and turned round the loss of a first set to beat him. But that point, for a set won in a match lost, was to prove crucial. Tiago went on to clock up five good wins of his own and earn his bonus points. Meanwhile Lee seemingly went one better with six wins in total, but missed out on bonus points. Add it all together and by a solitary point (that set won at the beginning of the round) Tiago grabs the group. Huge commiserations to Lee but a massive round of applause to Tiago... somehow we'll have to get you both promoted next time. Great tennis throughout this brilliantly busy group.
