Collapse AllGreenwich Singles - Round 36 | Thursday 19 September 2019 to Wednesday 13 November 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 16 October 2019)

Some lovely matches played this round, but that's not quite all for 2019! The specially extended to 10 weeks, Christmas into the New Year round starts at the beginning of December. It's the perfect antidote to Christmas shopping and the world's best cure for over-indulgence! Hope to have you playing!

Group Summary:

What a fantastic top group full of good tennis and excellent commentaries to bring the action to life. Suitably for such a tight group we had a tie on points for the top spot, all decided by Mark and Amit's decidedly wet head-to-head. Well done to both of them and to Alberto, who had he only earned his bonus points would have been up there with the leaders but has instead to be content with the bronze!

Reveal CommentAlberto Legarre bt Angus Bearn (Nov 7) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Nice match played in clay. The court was still a bit wet so balls were quite heavy and we had to improvise. Angus managed to get some nice trick shots but a consistent day on my serve decided it"  -- Alberto
Reveal CommentAlberto Legarre bt Amit Dave (Oct 27) 4-6, 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Amazing match with Amit. The slippery back of the court and the chilly weather didn't help for us to show the top of our game but still we managed to pull a good one with great forehands both sides and some really nice touch shots from Amit. Looking forward for the re-match!"  -- Alberto
Reveal CommentAmit Dave bt Adrian Britton (Oct 20) 6-4, 4-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Not exactly sure how Amit won this match. It was back and forth on the clay courts at Blackheath Tennis Club for the best part of 2 hours. Adrian's style of play is dangerously suited to the clay courts. His consistent play and placements made for an entertaining game. Each player breaking each other several times in the first and second sets with hairline differences in points in the third. Each point was fought for and somehow Amit came out on top. But only just. A really great match-up and can't wait for the re-match. Best of luck Adrian."  -- Amit

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentMark Plonka bt Adrian Britton (Oct 18) 2-6, 6-0, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A very competitive even match with all sorts of shots and variety and long rallies. The last set alone was over an hour. Both players gaining ascendancy at various points of the match with particular styles and rhythm; momentum was definitely a huge factor throughout the match. Well played Adrian; looking forward to our re-match."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentAdrian Britton bt Alex Liddiard (Oct 10) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Really tough battle against Alex who was very consistent off both sides and didn’t give away many free points. Looking forward to playing again soon."  -- Adrian
Reveal CommentAmit Dave bt Alex Liddiard (Oct 8) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Not the best start to the match with lights coming on late, wet and slippery, mossy courts. Alex couldn't find his rhythm despite clearly having very solid baseline game. Amit capitalised with keeping the ball in court and waiting for the unforced errors. Really tough match mentally. One of those you don't take any joy in winning and empathise with your opponent. Hope to face Alex again under better circumstances. "  -- Amit
Reveal CommentMark Plonka bt Diego Rincon (Oct 7) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A much tougher match than the score would indicate: many of the games went to deuce and some long fought rallies and games. Diego has a dangerous forehand and defence that was hard to breakdown. Thank you for the match. "  -- Mark
Reveal CommentAdrian Britton bt Angus Bearn (Oct 6) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good competitive match against Angus. The match turned on a game midway through the second set that must have had at least 15 deuces before I got over the line and went on to take the match."  -- Adrian

Reveal CommentAlex Liddiard bt Angus Bearn (Oct 3) 6-3, 6-4

  • "A good match under the flood lights. Tight games with some long rallies and good variation on both sides. Thanks for the game Angus! "  -- Alex
Reveal CommentMark Plonka bt Amit Dave (Oct 1) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "There will probably not be a wetter tennis match played this season! A very tricky match for both of us with slippery courts - so a lot of attempts to adjust from both parts. Amit has some super technique - and it was probably some fortune for me he is just getting back into the game after being off for almost 2 years i think. Amit's serve and forehand placement was a definite strength - only pipped by some of my consistency in the first set that saw me edge ahead early and then very close rallies in the 2nd set; i just managed to survive some long deuce games which made the difference."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentAngus Bearn bt Diego Rincon (Sep 30) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A fine, combative match with not the slightest sense of who would prevail until the final ball flew long. Great atmosphere at the David Lloyd club. "  -- Angus
Reveal CommentAlberto Legarre bt Adrian Britton (Sep 28) 3-6, 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Good battle from Adrian. Very difficult to read shots and those slice passing shots were incredible."  -- Alberto
Reveal CommentMark Plonka bt Angus Bearn (Sep 26) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable match and tougher than the score might imply - we where both sweating out there by the 2nd set! I definitely needed to serve well to get out of trouble a few times; and had some great rallies. Angus is very dangerous when he places the ball where he wants! Well played Angus - thank you for the match. "  -- Mark
Reveal CommentAmit Dave bt Diego Rincon (Sep 23) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great match despite the score line. The second set may look like a walkover but the match wasn't without it's close calls. Several deep deuce games that Amit could have capitalised on but Diego got the better off. Diego is very nimble and agile on the court and WILL chase everything down. He's got a great touch and has consistently deep ground strokes. Having his racket string break and using Amit's spare racket didn't dampen his ability to dictate some great points. Unfortunately Amit played a more consistent game with fewer errors overall. Great fun, can't wait to play again. Cheers Diego. "  -- Amit
Reveal CommentAmit Dave bt Angus Bearn (Sep 19) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Fantastic day for it. First set saw me find a rhythm straight away and get ahead on the important points. Second set consisted of breaks on both sides with Angus playing some really decent shots and capitalising on my mental hiccup. Managed to grind out the win in the end and convert where mattered. Great match, really enjoyed it. Thank you Angus."  -- Amit

Group Summary:

More excellent tennis in this group! Lateef, having narrowly beaten the eventual winner, will be kicking himself for not getting another match played, but the top two added bonus points to their tally and played more fixtures. A point for the set won in that loss to Lateef finally allowed Massimiliano edge the group win over Aurelien. Not a bad way to celebrate your return to the league!

Stephen makes it two group wins in a row, but he really had to fight for it! Both Samuel and Spencer beat him in their head-to-heads and Andrew was able to level the points with Stephen even without bonus points! The score seesawed throughout, and neither of us was able to fully take control of the match. In the end, I just managed to hold my nerve in the tie break. I won through consistently managing to stay in the rally and choosing safe shots rather than ambitious ones. This tactic combined with the fact Sam hasn't played much this year meant I scraped a victory. "  -- Andrew

Group Summary:

It's third time lucky for Hanna as she carried off the winner's title for the first time. The secret of her success this time was, as well as a couple of great wins of her own, playing more matches than anyone else and scheduling them to earn her bonus points. That allowed her to finish ahead of Andre in second place and Mo with the bronze (they tied on points but Mo conceded more sets and games). Well done Hanna!
