Player Comments:

  • "Manuel tried to psych me out with some unconventional pre-match tactics (no I will not play left-handed or without glasses;) and he even wore a glam rock wig! Despite this we settled to a good rhythm and traded some heavy balls. Everything went with serve until Manuel broke @ 5-3 and served confidently to take the 1st set. In the 2nd I started to find the corners and lines. Manuel fetches a crazy number of balls but was caught out of position once too often. Manuel got on the scoreboard at 1-3 but I pushed hard to level the match. The stage was set for an epic 3rd with 40min left. Manuel threw in some S&V, and some good underarm serves but the dropshots hit the net and the lobs just a tad long. A great game & looking forward to a rematch!"  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "What an exhausting match! A first set that kept swinging back and forth. I took an early 4-2 lead but David fought back well, playing some good approaches to the backhand side and closing with tight net play. Just a few key points separated us and really it could have been David that took it. The second set was the reverse with David initially taking the lead but I levelled us at 4-4. Unfortunately it was towards the end of the eight game of the second set that David pulled a muscle in his leg and thought it best to concede rather than risk aggravating the injury - a pity as it really was a very competitive until that point but no doubt a wise decision. Look forward to playing again David! "  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "A quick start for me and a slow start for Nick meant I raced to a 5-1 lead before Nick started to find his game. 1 break back was very nearly 2 breaks but I managed to keep things together and take the set. The second set was much closer and in all honesty Nick should have won it, I was lucky to get to the tiebreak and fairly lucky to win it. Thanks for a good match in the beautiful surroundings of Six Bells. "  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "Another 3 setter, played over two separate sessions. David showed good grit and determination to up his level and take the second set to force us to return for a decider. The 3rd set was fast paced, with some heavy hitting baseline exchanges but shorter games and not a lot between us. Good fun as always mate - best of luck in the rest of your games. "  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "Once again a really tough match. The first set of 6-1 to David was extremely hard fought and the second set was even harder with Manuel just clinging it in the tie break. The final tie break could of gone either way but Manuel made unforced errors at critical times. "  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "A great match played over two separate days. From the off Raf was a little slower to get that big serve firing which just gave me the confidence to take risks and go for some bigger returns. The second set was completely different to the first, Raf served and returned well and hit some some cracking big backhands under pressure. Despite being 5-4 down Raf played exceptionally to take the next 3 games and the set with me hardly winning a point. We started the 3rd set tussle with the clock against us but I just managed to get the all important break to leave things at 3-1. When we resumed I think Raf was a bit slower to start again and just ran out of runway. Great game though with really enjoyable rallies. Cheers Raf! "  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "I started the first set a bit more consistent than David and that was reflected on the points. Second set started the same 3 - 0 but David had a great come back and getting more comfortable on the court the game resulting 3 -3. Second half of the second set developed by more rallies and runs across the court. Tiebreak carried on the same dynamic but managed to steal a couple of consecutive points to win. Thanks for the game David."  -- Manuel

Player Comments:

  • "Although the first set was 6-1 it was very hard thought with virtually every game going to duce. The second set was also tough but a few games was quite short. Both players were quite steady and consistent but Winston just managed to edge out Anyinash in the tie-break. At times this match was a real war of attrition with Anyinash have to hit 5 smashes to win a point. Is that a RECORD!!!! "  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable match in a great location. The two courts in Aber are in the local park, nestled in the heart of the community with surrounding terrace houses and views of the valley and tree lined hills. Nicky is clearly a skilled tennis player and even though he's just getting back into playing more regularly, showed he has weapons and clever tactical play. I was perhaps a little more aggressive and maybe a bit sharper in the first set but Nicky responded well. The second was much tighter and Nicky had a chance to close out at 5-4 up in the second, his serve just faltering a little at key points. Looking forward to playing again and visiting again when the courts are resurfaced. Cheers for the game Nicky!"  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "A scoreline that doesn't tell the whole story. A few tight games, then Raf took control of the first set at 5-1, Raf's level dropped a bit as I finally found my game to claw the set back and take it 7-5. an early break in the second set was never going to be enough, but the crucial 4th game saw me claim the double break which allowed me to relax and swing freely towards the end. Thanks for the game Raf"  -- Mark
Reveal CommentNick Jones bt Mark Thomas (Sep 9) 7-6 (7-2), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We were both not quite up to our usual standard for this one for some reason. Mark was quick off the blocks in the first, serving and returning well (that damn slice forehand!) It wasn't until I found myself 5-1 down that I woke up a bit and started to find better shots of my own. I think Mark may have suffered a strain/injury when pushing off somewhere around 5-5 which hindered his ability to move and play to his usual high standard. It was very noticeable in the second set as more shots were hit long or wide after being out of position. A pity as I know Mark is pretty much unbeatable when on top form. Cheers for the game though bud and have a great holiday! "  -- Nick
Reveal CommentMark Thomas bt David Anyinsah (Sep 3) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another epic for David and I. There must have been 15 service breaks in total (and even more service lets!) with David taking the crucial break in the first. I hung on in the second before getting a break at 4-5, then the third set is a blur but I managed to break at 4-5 again to seal the win. Thanks again David, let’s play a tiebreak third set next time! "  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "Unbelievably difficult match. Nick has either a severe slice or massive topspin forehand. Adapting to the very different shots was very difficult."  -- David
