Collapse AllHighbury Fields Doubles - Round 35 | Thursday 23 May 2019 to Wednesday 31 July 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 26 June 2019)

What a fantastic round! Over 70% of matches were played and that is a real achievement in any round and especially a round of doubles. The tennis didn't disappoint either with some great matches and dozens of supportive (and witty) commentaries. It's been a great time for tennis on Highbury Fields with another excellent summer community tournament that many of you also played in, the repainting of the courts and in the last few weeks the opening of three brand new courts. You guys have done the Fields proud!

Group Summary:

A great performance from Mitch & James who played all their matches and won more than any of the other teams. But it was a real battle for top spot and defending champs, Sean & James, thanks to earning their bonus points for scheduling, matched Mitch & James in the points chase. That means it was all down to their head-to-head and the match disappoint - both sets went to tiebreaks! A tantalising result for our silver medalists as even if one set had gone their way they would have topped the table on points. As it is, it is well done again to the indomitable Sean & James.

  • "This match had been scheduled for a long time so we were keen to play again after our excellent bout last year. We discovered from Daniel, on arrival at the court, that, earlier in the day, he'd developed a serious problem with his neck - pinched nerve? - and had kindly asked his friend, Bali, to step in at the last minute. Obviously, we went ahead and played. A perhaps less experienced player than Daniel, our progress against this newly-aligned pairing was easier than expected. A lot of fun and played in good spirit. Tim's serves and shots are phenomenal. "  -- Mitch

Group Summary:

On paper at least, with six relatively comfortable wins, Kyle & Anthony look to have taken the group win in their stride. But we know how much work goes into not only keeping up the on-court concentration to bring home those wins, but also in setting up and scheduling the matched in the first place! So well done to our Group two champs. Runners up Fatemeh & Alan made it a close run thing (attempting one extra match in the process) and it would had been closer still if they had won their bonus points. An excellent group with some very nice commentaries and determined tennis.

Good luck to them in their next matches."  -- Alan

Group Summary:

No team could maintain a completely unblemished record in group three, and as a result there was a real battle between the top four teams. With bonus points, points for sets won in matched lost and even a walkover in the mix, it couldn't really have been much closer. Now if it weren't for the fact that tennis hates a draw in the same way nature hates a vacuum, we'd make them all winners! But that would not be fair to Caroline & Simon who ended up a point ahead of both Gerard & Alan and Carl & Tom who tied on 14 points. So gold it is to C&S, and silver to G&A (as they beat C&T in their H2H). Got that? Award yourself a G&T.

Group Summary:

A terrific group with a nail-biting finish. Poonam & Vicky and Isabelle & Adam both tied with ten points each and an identical won four, lost one round record. That means, to break the tie, we look at their head-to-head, a match played on a "balmy Tuesday evening". Poonam & Vicky prevailed allowing Vicky to record that the team "was back!". And so it proved as the two held on through more memorable battles to top the group. Only Marco & Andrew beat them in the round but sadly for them they couldn't find enough matches to capitalise. Well done to our winners and the runners up, and a nod to Philip and Julian for a fine third place.

The third set was incredibly close with most of the games going to multiple multiple deuces. Vicky and I were lucky to nab the crucial points. The boys had us scrambling with their lobs and slices and consistent wily play - but Vicky was a gazelle around the back and a tiger at the net. Many thanks for a great game, guys. Group Summary:

The wins and losses were very evenly distributed across the group, so much so that while Jill & Gerard ended up at the bottom of the group they actually matched the group winners total of matches won! At the top of the table there was a three-way tie on points. No team had a winning record over each of the others, so we have to dust off the rule book to settle it. But by the narrowest of margins, and an analysis of average number of sets concede per match played, the gold goes to Matthew Robbins & Brian with Jens and John as runners up. Well done all.
