Collapse AllHighbury Fields Doubles - Round 37 | Thursday 21 November 2019 to Wednesday 12 February 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 1 January 2020)

It is not always easy to get four busy people on court to play a tennis match, especially when you throw in the challenges of winter weather and Christmas and New Year celebrations. So a big round of applause to you all for making this such a good round. Some two thirds of all possible matches were played which is great going and just as rewardingly, if your commentaries are anything to go by, there were some really memorable and fun on-court battles. With spring just round the corner, we can't wait till the next round!

Group Summary:

Eloy & Kyle proved to be a winning combo, not dropping a set on their way to a memorable group one win and (as a team) league debut. But they had to be careful! Coming up on the inside were James and Sean, armed with bonus points and having played one more match. That allowed them to match the leaders on points for a nail-biting group finish. A great top group where everyone was in the running, each team notched up at least one win and there were some mighty three setters!

More success for debut teams (no fewer than four new pairings by our count, though these teams including many an old hand) including Alan and Petar who played some excellent tennis to remain undefeated despite tough competition. Thanks too to Alan for the excellent commentaries that bring the matches alive; in fact most of the matches had commentaries and when you read something like Dario's "Fantastic match with some great serving, intense rallies and quick volleys. Everything you want in a doubles match. Dirceu Pozzebon & Videlin are great sportsmen, hope we play again in the future," you just want to get back out on court! Group Summary:

Unbeaten in four matches and with bonus points you would be forgiven for thinking this round was a bit of stroll in the park for Rafael and Helen, but there were plenty of tough battles to be got through and by playing an extra match and picking up points for sets won in matches lost, Caroline & Simon closed in on the leaders! A few matches left unplayed, but in truth, Rafael & Helen weren't, we suspect, going to be caught this round.

Group Summary:

Alejandra & Caterina may have one of the longest team names in the league (M. Alejandra Rojas Maldonado & Caterina Paolazzi) but they made short work of nailing their group four win. Efficient scheduling added to the points pressure, but it was the quality of their tennis and their unbeaten four-match winning steak that took them to the top of table. Well done too to Gerard and Ireo for their competitive second place, and a nod to Andrew and Alex in third - tantalisingly they didn't get to play the leaders but did bag a couple of nice wins.

Group Summary:

Now had Rita & Nigel bagged their bonus points or managed to play Mark & Natasha we might have had a different story to tell (when they were on court, they dominated!) but Christopher and Sabrina who played plenty of excellent tennis of their own, played one more match and grabbed bonus points. That excellent performance earns them a well-deserved group win! A fantastic group with only two matches not played and some every match had a great commentary.

Having the lost the opening game of set 2, we had a chat and decided we need to get back to basics, focus and fight hard for every point. Thereafter we were able to level the match and then get over the line in the 3rd. Nice volleying from Chris and James at the net with Jonas and Brett counter punching from the baseline. Thanks."  -- Brett

Reveal CommentRita Kilemade & Nigel Billen bt James Murphy & Brett Galloway (Dec 10) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A fun match on a chilly night played on the solus court 11 but we shared the splendid isolation with the fitness trainers who were sometimes literally hanging off the court fencing! That's Highbury tennis for you! Rita and I had to dig deep to stay ahead in the first set with some excellent angled serving from Brett and effective volleying from James who both neutralised our serving with deep returns. We pushed through in the second set but this was never a forgone conclusion. Excellent tennis."  -- Nigel

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentRita Kilemade & Nigel Billen bt Christopher Walker & Sabrina Aich (Dec 3) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A lovely match played (thanks Rita) on the fantastic artificial clay under the Coolhurst bubble. We were lucky to clinch the first set with what looks like such a convincing scoreline, but the very first game (won by Christopher and Sabrina) set the pattern for a nip and tuck encounter that became a real battle in the second set. Christopher was everywhere and Sabrina became more and more dangerous at the net as the match went on. But star of the show was Rita who I suspect can make anyone she plays with appear at least 90% more competent that they really are. Great fun."  -- Nigel
Reveal CommentChristopher Walker & Sabrina Aich bt James Murphy & Brett Galloway (Dec 1) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Brett and James had us on the ropes in the 2nd set as it looked destined to go to a deciding set but we managed to scrape through. James was dangerous at the net as always and his forehand gained some real momentum in the second set with some excellent cross court returns. Brett played some great ground strokes and pulled off the shot of the match with is a drop shot return from a smash that Nadal would have been proud of! Thanks for the game. "  -- Christopher

Group Summary:

The rain prevented Matthew & Brian claiming a clean sweep of wins (and you can never quite be sure when your opponents might step up the pressure and turn a match around). But Matthew & Brian had done enough to seal the group win having beaten second-placed Adrian & Ynda early in the round. That was a good match and with more matches under their belt the score might well have been closer still if it had been played later. Well done to both teams and a round of applause to everyone who got on court. As Jens, Jane, Kate and Colin discovered, sometimes you don't even need to complete the match to have a great time!
