Collapse AllHighbury Fields Singles - Round 60 | Thursday 20 September 2018 to Wednesday 14 November 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 17 October 2018)
The 60th round for our biggest league and it was good to mark this milestone with a decent turnout and lots of competitive matches. Thanks for all your efforts in continuing to make the league a success and great fun to be part of. Here's to more of the same in the next 60!
Group Summary:
Tom's terrific form continues as he follows up his win in the Kennington & Brockwell league with another unbeaten table topping display - well played. Stefan secured a couple of victories and won a set against John in a "great game" with "great rallies", and with bonus points added to his tally too he climbs into second place. Kudos also to John for playing the most matches!

He runs down everything and could have easily won that second set to make it a tough 3rd set, which we probably would have had to finish on another day! Group Summary:
A very close call for the group two crown with Mia, Toby and Daniel all finishing on eight points apiece. Unfortunately head to heads can't be used to separate the trio so a trip to the rule book is required to determine the new champ. After walkover wins and bonus points are removed, it is Mia who just crosses the line in first. Daniel held his nerve to win the first set against Toby after more than "2 hours" of play and this set him on his way to a straight sets victory and secures him second place. Credit to Johary too who also showed fine form to notch up a trio of wins and finish only a point behind the top three in fourth.

Andrew T completed every match and scored bonus points to leave his quest for the prize all in his own hands, and this enthusiasm paid off as he added a formidable five victories to his total to charge into top spot. Michael and Harry both finish with the satisfaction of having beaten the new champ and with four victories to their names it's a tight battle between the two for second. Their head to head therefore proves decisive and after "plenty of good rallies" Michael took a very close straight sets victory to claim the silver. Samir's four wins from four sees him finish with the best stats of the round, however this was only enough to secure the silver. Miguel played more matches than anyone else and perfected his scheduling skills, and this proved to be a recipe for success as he added three wins and a point from a three setter defeat to his tally, to narrowly move into first place . Alan strong performance kept the pressure on John throughout and he comes home only a single point behind in second place. Well done to Ireo too who also got lots of match practice in.

Chris played some great shots and had me on the back foot, but then frustratingly for him (and luckily for me) made several unforced errors at key times which leaves me a slight advantage in the second set. Player Comments:
- "What a great match. Dan said it was his first match in over a decade. Well I am glad I played him first as he is a good player who surely will get better and better as he plays more. After some decent tennis in the first set, I managed to take it relatively comfortably, but the second set was an epic battle in which both of us played some great tennis with some long and (very) draining rallies. Dan played some lovely shots and played an aggressive style of tennis coming to the net at every opportunity. Points were won and lost by very small margins and it really could have gone either way. Really enjoyable match. Thanks Dan and best of luck in the rest of your matches." -- Alan

There was nothing to separate Tom and Juan at the top of group eight, so their head to head becomes a winner takes all affair. On court it was a similar story, with the "match very close until the end" and only a final set tiebreak the difference between the two. Tom held his nerve to win this tiebreak 7-5 and clinches the crown by a whisker. A shout out to Rita and Dylan who beat the new champ in a couple of matches that "had just about everything".

David was given a tough test by Francois and Nigel in his first couple of matches, but he dug deep to emerge with "well-deserved" wins and with three more straightforward victories added to his tally too he's the clear group champ. The race for second is much tighter as Nigel and Tiziano finished tied on six points apiece. The match between the two was unfortunately unfinished at one set all so some number crunching is required to see who takes second....and thanks to fewest games conceded it is Tiziano who steels the silver. Well played all.

This group was unfortunately hit by a couple of no shows and withdrawals which reduced the overall number of matches played. Jesse and Emmanuel secured a couple of victories each to finish out in front, but with nothing to separate the two on points some calculations are required to determine the new champ. Thanks to fewest games conceded, the congratulations go to Jesse and commiserations Emmanuel. Well done to Othmane too for playing the most matches.

Mark took a little while to get going but found some more consistency in the second set, mixing it up and winning a few points from the net forcing me to hone my lob. - "Enjoyable match despite the unwelcome influence of leaves on the court. Once Gerard got going towards the end of the first set it made for quite a competitive match. The second set could’ve gone either way but luckily my service game was consistent enough to just edge it. Thanks Gerard!" -- William
Player Comments:
- "Stephen couldn’t quite find his stride in the first few games allowing me to take an early lead and with the momentum behind me I took the first set quickly. My winning streak did not continue into the second with Stephen hitting consistently to fire himself into a 3-0 lead. Long rallies ensued in a battle of a fourth game which I just edged handing me an important break and the momentum to win the next 4 games. With me serving for the set at 5-3 Stephen saved 6 match points to break me before finally capitulating in a set which could’ve gone either way. Great contest on a mild Sunday morning. - "A really lovely match with Clare who fought hard having run to the Park all the way from Holloway! The league really works well when you find someone who you can have rallies with and thereby have fun, get some exercise and hopefully improve! Clare and I were very well matched and had some really good rallies including lobs, drop shots etc...Thanks Clare and hope to play again soon. " -- Andrew

- "Not much between me and Elvan and she hit some great passing shots to counter my frequent ill-advised advances to the net. Thanks for the match, Elvan, and thanks for organising. All the best with your remaining matches." -- Jamal

- "Epic and fun match with Andrew in lovely, sunny conditions. I think my fitness was the reason I won. Andrew will be very dangerous when he plays more matches. I'm just glad I played him first! Thanks for the match and all the best with your remaining matches." -- Jamal
