Collapse AllHighbury Fields Singles - Round 63 | Thursday 16 May 2019 to Wednesday 10 July 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 12 June 2019)

Great news for round 64 of the league - we have three brand new courts available for play! With all the courts now cleaned and repainted and the three top courts back in play, Highbury Fields really is one of the best places to play tennis in the country. Thanks for all the hard working setting up and playing matches this round and working with the courts team as the refurbishment work continues. Approaching 60% of all matches which given the upheavals, is very good going. Here's to the next round!

Group Summary:

The bragging rights may be due to Kenny who did a pretty good job of not giving Darren much of a look in when they played this time, but the Group One congratulations well and truly goes to Darren who notched up more wins than anyone else in the group. John, sensibly making sure he earned his bonus points, equalled the leader on points to earn silver, his reward for a very competitive performance.

Group Summary:

Carlos marked his return to the league by scheduling a match with each of his opponents, earning bonus points and collecting enough points overall to run out the winner five points ahead of second-placed Daniel. It was impressive tennis with third placed Salim the only player stopping Carlos earning a clean sweep of wins (that match remains unfinished at a set all). There was some mouth-watering tennis in this group: such a great advertisement for the league and the tennis we play!

Tim figured me out a bit in the second set, bringing his serving percentage up and hitting great groundstrokes off both wings. That brought us to a decider which ultimately came down to consistency - the rallies were even and the score wasn't a great reflection of how close it really was. I had flashbacks to playing Quincy in the first game, where I made a good deal of first serves and watched as Josh smashed them past me for clean winners. He continued to pressure me on serve and I was fortunate to save all the break points he earned against me to take the set 6-1. In the second set we stayed toe to toe, Josh even broke me for a 3-2 lead but could never find his rhythm and I continued to take the big points for another score that doesn't reflect the caliber of the opposition, 6-3. With no floodlights, the ever present threat of rain and darkening sky it felt like the match was unlikely to be completed, especially as neither of us managed to hold serve until we reached 4 games all (we blame the wind). I managed to hold and break again for a 6-4 win. The second set continued as we struggled to hold serve (and tackle the ever-so-slight slope) - Ireo covers the court will and I rarely found empty space. Ireo was the first to get ahead, breaking me at 4-all to take a 5-4 lead. I got through that game and clung onto my serve to take the set and the match 7-5. Thanks for a great match!"  -- Jamie

Group Summary:

A couple of players didn't really get going this time, but there was a nice tussle amongst those that did, especially in the battle for second place. Here Sarah, thanks to a soggy two and a half hour battle, just edged it over Matt - the head-to-head breaks the tie on points and wins her the silver. But Dominik was out on his own this time enjoying an undefeated five match run to top the group. Well done Dominik and the others!

Player Comments:

  • "An epic battle, 2 1/2 hours on a soggy court. Matt didn't stop running about and retrieving the ball, which I think is cheating really - where I thought I'd made a few winners, back the ball would come! The conditions were far from ideal being rather slippery (note to self don't wear expensive new trainers in slippery conditions, wear cheap old indoor trainers instead) & rainy, but Matt certainly coped better than I did in the first set. A change of footwear led to a better grip in the 2nd set and all round happiness, but Matt gave nothing away. I took the first 4 games comfortably but then Matt up'd his game and I could feel that set slipping away. Literally. Thanks for a great game Matt!"  -- Sarah

With a number of unfinished matches in this group, and a few more not played at all, there could have been quite a shuffling of the pack if all had been played to a conclusion. That said Nikolaus appeared to have the trump card in the matches he played. While he could only tie on points with second-placed Johan, his tough head-to-head gave him the well-deserved group win.

"There was nothing in it" Daniel said of his incredibly tight win over Aleph, but even so it must be a little galling to see Aleph just "rob" his rival of the top spot despite both earning five wins this round! But the point Aleph won in that match plus the point earned in the one-more match he played, allowed Aleph to earn an memorable group win (his second on the trot). • "We were slightly surprised to find Finsbury Park tennis courts surrounded by the security fences of Wireless Festival and had to be let in by bouncers. We were right in the sound-bleed cross-over between the two stages so it was impossibly noisy, but also continentally hot and altogether surreal. The warm-ups on stage and on court was a bit stuttering but then multi-platinum selling Atlanta supergroup Migos came on to the main stage for the second set and everyone went nuts. The fat beats backed some bigger base-line action & we both found our flow a bit. But then Afro Dancehall collective NSG started on the Pepsi Max stage and all of a sudden we had full on battle between the two sides of the net and the two dance act headliners"  -- Ben

Player Comments:

  • "A good match played as the Wireless Festival got up to full energy around us. The courts are sandwiched between two stages meaning you get two songs playing full volume at the same time which is good value for the £6 court fee if you think about it. My main advantage in this match was that I hated it much less than Mark, who was not having a good time. His game went up and down with the relative volume of the festival with the loudest parts coinciding with a string of grime-induced double faults. Still a bit suspicious that Mark threw the last set just so he could go home!"  -- Eddie
