Collapse AllHighbury Fields Singles - Round 64 | Thursday 25 July 2019 to Wednesday 18 September 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 21 August 2019)

We were all celebrating this round as Highbury finally got its three fantastic new courts! We hope that this makes scheduling matches a little easier and it was certainly nice to see over 60% of matches completed this time, a whopping 413 in all! See you all again for round 65 we hope!

Group Summary:

Nice chap that he is, James 'T for Tennis' Kirk doesn't mind the occasional Trekkie joke, so beamed up to Group One (he won group two last time) how would he do? Very well as it turned out, bagging four wins for expense of a couple of losses. The trouble was that Vivek had also entered warp drive and ended the round on the same win/loss record and the same number of points! That means, phasers locked, it was all decided on their head-to-head. On this occasion, James won. May the rivalry live long and prosper!

A fine return to the league for Andrew who mostly sailed through his matches but had a real fight on his hands when it came to the eventual runner up, Christopher! Both players earned their bonus points and the point Christopher won in his match with Andrew took him within a point of his rival's total. Just a little anticlimactically, it was a walkover win that finally carried Andrew over the winning line. Well played all!

Well done Eloy and everyone in this impressive and friendly group.

Group Summary:

A big welcome to Pierre who playing in his first round impressed everyone with his tennis. Perhaps most eye-catching was his match against Dominik - a tiebreak decider in the first set and a match tiebreak to win him the encounter. The one thing Pierre didn't have going for him this time were bonus points for scheduling three matches before the mid point, and that nearly mattered a lot. Runner up Nikolaus, also having an excellent round, used his to help him match Pierre's total. So the round was decided on their head-to-head! Exciting tennis.

Group Summary:

It's not that often in Highbury that three wins, unsupported by bonus points, is enough to win you the group, but in this very even and competitive field it was all Paul needed. Of course it could have been very different if he had lost to Joshua who drew level on six points! That head-to-head needed a couple of sessions to complete and went, finally, Paul's way. Great tennis everyone.

Group Summary:

Such impressive tennis from Kyle whose straight-sets wins were in contrast to the numerous three-set thrillers elsewhere in the group! Winning a group is a always a great achievement, but you can sometimes take something almost as rewarding from a round without topping the table. David's excellent win against the eventual winner, Daniel is a great example, a really competitve match where David's serve was firing on on all cylinders! Nevertheless, this was Daniel's round and with five wins and bonus points he deserved the gold. Sven just edged Ben out for the silver.

Group Summary:

Julian adds a third group title to his collection, and his first for a couple of years. Remaining undefeated all round and earning your bonus points is certainly the way to do it! The only pity is that he didn't get to play Jonathan in which would probably have been the group decider. As it is, Jonathan has to settle for second place (he tied on points with Carl but beat him in their head-to-head) and we raise a glass to Julian and his hat-trick.

Group Summary:

Full marks to Sameer, Jordan and Tim who tracked down all their matches in this busy group. They were rewarded with the top three positions, but who would win the gold? By rights, perhaps, it was Jordan who should have prevailed. He actually won all his matches and played the full set of available matches. That puts him in the rare category of players with a 100 per cent record who are beaten to the top spot by a player who has also earned their bonus points. In the end there was only a point in it (the point Sameer won in his defeat to Jordon) but it was enough to give him the group victory. Bragging rights to Jordan, the win to Sameer and a round of applause to them both (and both will be promoted).

Group Summary:

Six first timers, new to the group, added a welcome unpredictability to the mix and everyone gave it their all with just a handful of matches unplayed. The front runners, Francois and Brett showed that they could be beaten, but both earned bonus points and that made things very frustrating for the undefeated William. Unable to add another match, William's five wins were not enough to catch them up. Equally frustratingly. Francois and Brett didn't play each-other which means, on this ocassion, Francois tops the group by a single point. Well done everyone!

Reveal CommentBrett Galloway bt Byron McCaughey (Aug 14) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A fantastic encounter. First of all credit to the new court 11 which must have incredible drainage as we managed to play comfortably after a day of rain! Onto the match - Byron has great racquet technique and is capable of hitting blistering winners. With a bit more match practice one suspects he will be winning a lot of matches. However, my game is built around defence and, with a lot of effort, I was just about able to keep the ball in play long enough to benefit from enforced errors - many of which came deep into long baseline rallies. One of the best matches I have played in while - thanks."  -- Brett

There were more points to be squeezed out of this closely matched group, but Marco would no doubt have made the running for top spot even if more matches had been played. With four good wins, he was the man to beat. Hugo stepped up to that particular challenge winning their head-to-head in a nice three-setter, but it wasn't enough to catch the leader in the table. Andrew, assisted by bonus points came closest, but no doubt about the winner this time. Very well done Marco!
