It was fantastic to welcome 24 new players to Highbury Fields League this time around alongside many of our regulars and returning players, and great to see friendly, competitive tennis return to the courts! Some groups were very keenly contested whereas a few were slower to get off the mark, meaning that collectively nearly 60% of all possible matches were played. Well done to everyone who dusted off their rackets and got their tennis going again, and here's to the next round!

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Arthur for retaining his Group 1 title in fine style by winning 6 matches including a 3 setter against runner up Christopher. Christopher fended off Kyle's bid to finish in third spot although kudos to Kyle for winning their head to head, and he had to work hard in his match against Rory where there was "absolutely nothing in it in the first set". Fortune was on Rory's side when he played Sean though as he managed to win the second set tiebreak to stave off a decider in windy conditions.

Group Summary:

An impressive run of matches from Nick saw him finish top of the group with 6 wins and no defeats, a full 5 points clear of runner up Luiz who won 3 matches. Unfortunately a number of matches went unscheduled and 3 matches went unfinished perhaps because they overran their court bookings... such a shame they couldn't be rescheduled! We know there's been lots of demand for court time post-lockdown but hopefully this will ease going forward... although it's great to have so many players picking up a racket again!

This was an active and committed group with the top 5 players scheduling 6 or 7 matches and earning midway bonus points in the process. It was very close between the top 3 too with Orlando and Jesper tied on points but Orlando took the group title by winning their topsy turvy head-to-head in a match tiebreak. Group Summary:

An impressive winning streak from Harry saw him top the group undefeated on 6 wins (including one walkover) and 4 points clear of runner up Michael. Unfortunately Michael had to retire during the second set of their head to head but he recorded a fine comeback win against Yading recovering from a set down to prevail in 3 tight sets, "a match which spoke to the spirit of Local Tennis Leagues". Group Summary:

Congratulations to Daniel and Alex for taking the top 2 spots on their return to Highbury Fields league action, and Daniel had a flawless round finishing undefeated on 6 match wins and earning the midway bonus points. Alex was the only other player to play all his matches although he was a set down against Omer when rain stopped play and sadly they weren't able to complete it. This was a fantastic group with everyone playing all 6 matches (following Luke's withdrawal) and only 2 points separating our champ Rafael from runner up and Leagues debutant Florian. Unfortunately quite a few matches went unscheduled in this group but the top 2 players both played 6 matches each, proving again that the more matches you play, the better your chances of winning the group! Unfortunately their head to head was a walkover to Tim but by contrast he had to work hard for his win against Arthur after losing a very close first set tiebreak. It was a close race between Rajinder and Riccardo at the top of Group 13 on their respective returns to League action, but it was Rajinder who pulled clear with an extra match win although Riccardo has the bragging rights by coming from a set down to win their head to head!
