Collapse AllHighbury Fields Singles - Round 68 | Thursday 6 August 2020 to Wednesday 30 September 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 2 September 2020)

Wow, another bumper round in Highbury Fields with 22 groups this time and a fantastic 46 new players joining the league! There was a mixed bag of weather but this didn't deter you picking up your rackets and hitting the courts, and altogether nearly two thirds of matches were played. It's great that friendly, competitive tennis is well underway again and we hope to see you back in action next round!

Group Summary:

Defending champ Arthur was missing from action this round so the field was open for a new winner and Christopher seized his opportunity by winning all 5 matches. Kyle put up a good fight in their head to head, a close 2 setter "including one of the longest deuce games in the history of tennis!", but had to settle for runner up spot. Rory made Christopher work even harder in a match that "spanned over three hours" and went all the way to a third set tiebreak.

Group Summary:

Vivek and Adam played a "great fought match" but it was Vivek who took the win to seal the title by a point ahead of Adam. Vivek had another "tough battle" with Luiz over 3 sets but this was straightforward compared to Mark's marathon 3 setter against Adam which could barely have been closer and was played over 2 sessions. In fact Mark proved a master at the long matches also prevailing in 3 sets against Andre and Sean... great effort!

Group Summary:

This was a fairly quiet group with several matches left unplayed and a withdrawal, however Toby was proactive with his match scheduling to earn bonus points and notch up 4 wins to finish as group champ. His only defeat was to runner up Ewan, "a great, competitive match up", while he and Mark were tied at one set all when play had to stop sadly not to be resumed... not before Toby had saved the day by lending Mark a racket after he broke the strings in his last racket. Great sportsmanship!

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Guy for winning Group 4 in style on his Leagues debut, winning all 7 matches to finish a comfortable 4 points clear of runner up Paul. Guy dropped the opening set against Arnold and remarked he was "lucky to get out of that one" and had a close first set against runner up Paul. Paul also had to work hard against Arnold in a long 3 setter while a "slippy surface" made things tricky and the scoreline tight against Sam.

Well done to group champ Richard who combined on court and scheduling skills to finish 6 points clear at the top of Group 7 and was the only player to complete all 9 matches. Richard's 7 wins included a "terrific battle" with Nick and a comeback win against Bobby in 3 sets of "lights out tennis". Meanwhile Jamie's match with Bobby started as a "scrappy affair" in windy conditions before "the match caught fire" at 2-all in the second set... great tennis!

  • "Swirling wind, grey skies. Winter is definitely coming. The first set was a scrappy affair, both of us were trying to keep the errors down with mixed success. Unforced errors came easily and the wind was carrying plenty of decent shots long. In the second set we traded breaks up until 2-all and then suddenly the match caught fire: line balls, long rallies, big serves and audacious shot choices. Bobby kept asking tough questions but somehow I kept digging out the answers from around my ankles, behind my back or miles off court. • "Playing on slightly damp hard courts is a bit of an art form! With new balls I was getting great power on my serve and depth on my returns and I raced away with the first set. As the balls got a bit damp and heavy I lost my way, and Alex broke me early in the second set and showed some real grit, consistency and tennis IQ to carry it through despite my best efforts and generally good serving. The last set I was finding better passing shots off of both wings and Alex's first serve percentage dropped. With the ground so slippery picking the wrong direction or hesitating was pretty costly and I was able to dictate a little more often to tip the games my way."  -- Jamie

  • "Exhausting match! We were competing against the wind/rain instead of each other for a lot of it. The elements prevented us from playing our best tennis perhaps but we still had some high quality rallies. It could have gone either way with PLENTY of long games to deuce but my tactics might just have worked a bit better than Duncan’s in the end. There were plenty of stand offs between his lefty forehand and my two handed backhand but in the third set I started to get the better of this match up. A very tough/mentally exhausting match but it was an absolute pleasure to play Duncan and despite the conditions we had some lovely passages of play and a good laugh at our wind induced horror shots. Looking forward to next time. (in better weather!) "  -- Dan

As well as the slightly erratic bounce, we had a cross wind to contend with, which meant consistency was key. Having won the first set, the second was very tight until 4-4, when I managed to win through, although Andrew kept fighting till the end. Many thanks for coming over to Hanley. "  -- Duncan

We both had games where we were serving for the set but then played poor service games so a tie break was a fitting decider. I raced to a 4-1 lead in the second before Andy came storming back with some great serving and strong groundstrokes but I managed to hold my serve at 4-4 and broke Andy for the final game. Due to the rainy weather, we quickly changed the playing court from Clissold Park to Islington Tennis Centre, which gave a home-court advantage to me. Tim has a great backhand skill with a sharp forehand, and he kindly provided a drink to his opponent that strengthened and refreshed me. Long rallies with unbelievable sword fightings.
