The league is:

  • For everybody!

  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this round of matches and playing each of you in the group. We should also congratulate ourselves as a group, as we managed to play ALL our matches, with everything wrapped up by 1st June with 10 days to spare! I reckon that's pretty impressive with everybody leading ever-busier lives and the amount of inclement weather along the way :)  Hopefully see some or all of you in the next round :)"

Ashley Miller

"I definitely improved over the course of the round,"

Dan Davies

"I have thoroughly enjoyed playing in the local league. It really fits my work hours now where I can arrange the matches myself. I had given up on singles a number of years ago and was accepting that I needed to be younger and fewer ladies were interested in singles anyway. If I was going to get back into tennis since I moved jobs, I realised it would have to be singles and so far I have been surprised,"

Mary Crawford

"Thank you very much for the organisation of the tennis leagues. I have taken part in the Ipswich Christchurch Park league for the first time this round after a long time off from playing tennis. I think this is a great way of getting to play regularly and meet new people to play. I have had great, enjoyable matches with some very friendly people. My league matches may be finished for this round but have already arranged a couple of extra games within my group of players and will definitely be entering the next round. Once again thank you for the leagues as without dedicated people like yourself this would not be possible. Very happy player," Stuart Horrex

Stuart Horrex

"Very enjoyable, all played with good attitude and spirit in nice surroundings. Thanks to all concerned,"

  • "Really fun match with lots of good points Look forward to playing Trevor again soon :) "  -- Joshua
Reveal CommentTrevor Wright bt Marcus Sheaff (Sep 23) 5-7, 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The odd passing shower fortunately didn't make the Christchurch Park courts too slippery, though Marcus fell at the back once, and Trevor slid into the fence later on. Despite this, there was good defence from both players covering the court well, plus good serve volleying from Marcus, and s winning lob volley and drive volley from Trevor. Marcus started strongly, taking an early lead after both players recovered from 0.40 on their opening serves Trevor attacked some short balls to bring the score back to 4.4, but Marcus held on to win the first set. Trevor started the next set strongly, taking an early lead and keeping control to win 6.1. Similar story in the final set, with both players exhausted after a match of almost 3 hours."  -- Trevor
Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Marcus Sheaff (Sep 10) 6-2, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Good match played on windy, rainy afternoon. Yesterday Xin played Tom, during the first set tie break, Xin pulled muscle, thanks Tom's encouragement, Xin kept playing. After a lot of icing, and pain killer, Xin was able to play Marcus for 3 hours, It was generally very close game. Xin kept the pressure on the third set, eventually won the match. Phew! Well played , Marcus!"  -- Xin
Reveal CommentJoshua Crossley bt Avery Jackson (Sep 9) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Josh started the match solidly taking a 5-0 lead early in before serving out 6-1 to complete a dominant first set Josh however aware that avery was well capable of producing some dangerous tennis was prayers for a closer battle in the second Avery found his serve and held until a game at 2-2 when Josh hit a running drop shot to clinch the fort break Avery broke straight back however and forced Josh to serve to stay in the set at 4-5 a task he completeles with confidence I'm the next game Josh managed to break with a backhand pass catching avery out of position at the net Josh went on to confidently serve out the match A fun match with some good quality form both players, Josh's consistent approach won today against the legend AJ!"  -- Joshua

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Tom Sunderland (Sep 9) 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Tom started well with strong serves, with 3:1 lead. Xin caught up a few games, 6:6. Tie break, Tom and Xin played neck to neck at 6:6. Then Tom generated a winner kissed the line, and Xin lost the next point 8:6 to Tom. Second set was also a quite close game, Xin won 6:3. Third set is similar story. Overall, very close and enjoyable games! "  -- Xin
Reveal CommentTom Sunderland bt Marcus Sheaff (Sep 2) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game in great weather at Ipswich Sports Club. Tom raced to take the first set 6-0 as Marcus struggled to get his game going. Second set was a different story as Marcus demonstrated his great defensive ability with some incredibly long games/points. Tom's serve was enough to see it out the set however. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Xin Chen (Aug 28) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another enjoyable match played at Christchurch park with both players in good form . Both players returned well but Tyrone took the first set by hitting one too many winners for Xin. Xin made a strong start to the second set taking a 3-0 lead but was pegged back to 3-3 . Tyrone stepped his game up and took the second 6-4. "  -- Tyrone
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Marcus Sheaff (Aug 26) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Match was closer than score suggests with lots of long games. Tyrone managed to win the important points helping him win the first set 6-1. Luck was on Tyrone side hitting the top of the net and winning the point no less than 6 times . Marcus changed his tactics and served and volleyed effectively but it was Tyrone who won the match by again clipping the top of the net on match point . Great game "  -- Tyrone
Reveal CommentTom Sunderland bt Avery Jackson (Aug 26) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Good conditions at Ipswich Sports Club on the all weather surface. Tom edged an even first set with neither player able to hold their save consistently. Avery broke Tom in the first game of the second set and the game went with serve until Tom broke Avery to make it 4-4. Avery was self admittedly off form today and Tom was able to see out the second set. Thanks"  -- Tom
Reveal CommentTrevor Wright bt Xin Chen (Aug 20) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Things did not look good for Trevor at the start, with Xin playing well and deservedly leading 4.0,. Trevor couldn't find his range at all, but then somehow turned it around to win the next 9 games, though Xin maintained pressure throughout. Xin started to come back in the middle of the second set with some great volleying. In a crucial point at 4.2, Trevor managed to run down 2 well placed volleys from Xin and finish with a backhand passing winner at full stretch, to regain control of the match, and shortly went on to win the match and end his recent dismal run of form."  -- Trevor
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Marcus Sheaff (Aug 20) 6-2, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "Another great match played at a high standard and in good spirit. Having lost to Marcus in our pre-season friendly I knew that I had to be at my best at this match. The first set was evened at 2-2, but a short interruption from a baby crying on Marcus side was enough to turn the momentum in my favour. The second set saw Avery serving For the match at 5-2 only to be pegged back by Marcus serving and volleying to take the set to a tie break. In a tournament where the younger are dominating it was good for one of the older guard to come up with another win....."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Trevor Wright (Aug 19) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "An early start at Christchurch Park . Trevor struggled with the slippery court and Tyrone took full advantage by makin good use of the court and taking the first 6 games. Trevor made a good start in the second taking the first 2 games but couldn't maintain allowing Tyrone to take the next 6 games and close out the win :-)"  -- Tyrone
Tom Sunderland bt Trevor Wright (Aug 17) 6-1, 6-4
Reveal CommentJoshua Crossley bt Marcus Sheaff (Aug 16) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really fun match played in good spirit and a friendly atmosphere between two players who have practised a lot in the past There was some really good points throughout the match and the scoteline did not reflect the competitiveness of the Match and the level in which Marcus forced josh to play at to get the result Well played Marcus hope to play again soon :) "  -- Joshua
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Avery Jackson (Aug 13) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A game played to a very high standard at Christchurch Park this afternoon. Tyrone again came out flying racing to a 5-1 lead . Some excellent rallies saw Avery battle back to 5-4 but Tyrone held his nerve and served out the set at 6-4 . The first game of the second set was an immense battle lasting for over ten minutes but again it was Tyrone with his mental strength who broke and took a 4-0 lead . Avery's power and good use of the volley helped him put up a fight but it was Tyrone who closed the match 6-4 6-1 with a backhand winner with Avery quoting there has now been a change in guard (haha) great match :-) "  -- Tyrone
Reveal CommentJoshua Crossley bt Xin Chen (Aug 12) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Josh started the match with a hangover from his poor performance the day before Tampering with string tensions had really disrupted his rhythm the day before and once again a timid start left xin 4-2 up and playing some strong dominant tennis Josh after gathering himself suddenly found his game which has not been consistently with him for much of the league so far and managed to go on a run reeling off 10 of the next 11 games to win the match 6-4 6-1 Thanks for the game xin "  -- Joshua
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Joshua Crossley (Aug 11) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Very competitive match played out in the early morning heat at Christchurch Park with both players keen not to give anything away. Tyrone started the stronger of the two players takin. A 3-0 lead. Josh battled back with some great forehands but Tyrone took a 5-1 lead. Tyrone could not close the set and a great fight back from Josh made it 5-4. Josh had point to bring it back to 5-5 but Tyrones consistent running down of the ball was rewarded with a 6-4 first set. Tyrone maintained his good form and again took a lead in the second taking advantage of Josh's forced errors. The second set finished 6-1 . A great start by the defending champion :-) "  -- Tyrone
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Xin Chen (Aug 6) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "The match was played in good spirit on a bright and sunny afternoon at BT tennis club. Avery served and volleyed well and was consistent in the first. The second was a ding dong battle with both players struggling to hold serves. Avery managed to close out the set with Xin improving and challenging throughout despite picking up an injury in the second set....."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Trevor Wright (Aug 5) 6-2, 6-4

Reveal CommentMarcus Capper bt Jamie Cussans (Sep 26) 6-4, 5-7, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "“A close match that could have gone either way. With Jamie and I evenly matched in the 1st set it was only late on that I was able to win the decisive game, although it took me 8 break points to do it. Jamie doesn't know when he is beaten and demonstrated this on various shots. Many times I would be admiring what I thought was an obvious winner only for Jamie to run it down and hit back and take the point. In the second set I raced out to an early 3-1 lead, only for Jamie to step up his game and starting hitting some lovely winners, eventually taking the set 7-5. In the 3rd set I managed to regain some confidence and be more consistent taking the set 6-1. Jamie is a fantastic competitor and a pleasure to play against. Cheers Jamie"  -- Marcus
Gary Wolton bt Mike Bernard (Sep 25) Walkover
Reveal CommentSarah Quinlan bt Marcus Capper (Sep 25) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great game after a false start - I went to the wrong courts! Marcus was very kind and waited until I made my way to the right place and then we had a really tight first set with each winning one game before the other clawed back to even the score. I knew I couldn't give him a glimmer of light as he'd take full advantage, so every point was a battle. Great game, cheers Marcus, I look forward to playing you again (at Kesgrave!) "  -- Sarah
Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Marcus Capper (Sep 23) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A closer match than the score would suggest with some long rallies and several games going to deuce especially in the first set. I was able to take early leads in both sets and that enabled me to play with a bit more freedom. Well played Marcus a very enjoyable game "  -- Gary
Sarah Quinlan bt Jamie Cussans (Sep 21) Walkover
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Jamie Cussans (Sep 16) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "1 hour before the match it looked as if it was going to rain but the sun came out and stayed to give us perfect conditions at CCP. The match was played in good spirits throughout and was an enjoyable runaround for us both. There were quite a few deuces in both sets but I managed to take a comfortable lead in each before Jamie broke my serve to win both his games towards the latter end of the sets. Cheers for the game Jamie and I look forward to playing again. "  -- Daniel

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Sarah Quinlan (Sep 14) 6-4, 3-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Another very competitive and very enjoyable match with Sarah. Early exchanges saw us both struggling to hold serve in the first set, we reached 4/4 and I just managed to get the next two close games to sneak the first set. I took a 3/1 lead in the second set before Sarah came roaring back to win 5 games in a row forcing me into mistakes and playing some excellent slices and drop shots, I was feeling my age at that point. I stopped the rot in the first game of the third set and managed to take a 4/1 lead. Sarah wasn't having that and pegged me back to 5/5 with a combination of dogged defence and shrewd winners. A tie break loomed but I managed to edge the last two games. Well played Sarah "  -- Gary
Reveal CommentJamie Cussans bt Mike Bernard (Sep 12) 6-4, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "Checking the LTL archives I can see Mike beat me 6-1 6-1 in Feb 2014, 6-1 6-3 in July 2014 and 4-6 6-3 6-3 in August 2015. So it was nice to finally get a win and see the progress I've made since I started playing in 2013, thanks to this tennis league. It was a tough match with many good rallies and long games. I was leading 3-1 in the first set before Mike fought back, and Mike was 3-1 up in the second set and very nearly made it 4-1, so the match was in the balance all the way through. Very enjoyable match, thanks Mike"  -- Jamie
  • "You've got too much time Jamie :). Seriously every time I've played you you've got better and to adapt the old footballing cliché, I'm only as good as my match. It's really enjoyable to play you as you play with such a fair and sporting spirit, such a friendly manner and you stretch me all the way. Many thanks," -- Jamie
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Gary Wolton (Sep 9) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Slightly windy at times but otherwise perfect conditions played at Sproughton. This was a good quality match and almost every game was a battle so I was fortunate to take the 1st set by such a scoreline. Gary got off to a good start in the second set but at 2-2 I managed to break away winning the next 3 games. Gary pulled a game back to trail 3-5 but I managed to hold out to complete the win in what was potentially an important game for the final league positions. "  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable match in hot conditions. We shared the first four games of set 1 before I took a 4/2 lead and held on to win the first set. Set 2 was close in the early exchanges but I managed to get 4/1 ahead before Jamie came back and made set 2 close before I served out to take it 6/4. Well played Jamie"  -- Gary
Reveal CommentSivakumar Kandath bt Gary Wolton (Aug 27) 6-4, 4-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Great game played in hot conditions, Siva took a 4/0 lead in the first set and I styggled to get into contention and missed chances to get to 5/5 and Siva served out for set 1. From 2/0 down in set 2 I came back and managed to sneak the set after Siva saved three set points. Those efforts cost me and Siva took control winning comfortably in the third, well played Siva"  -- Gary
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Sivakumar Kandath (Aug 27) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another evening match played in good conditions at CCP. I was surprised to find out this was Siva's 2nd match of the day, although judging by the amount of running and energy he had it certainly didn't seem it! The toss was won by Daniel who elected to return, subsequently breaking serve and holding to take a 2-0 lead. Siva got on the board in the 4th game and I believe took the next game to trail 2-3. There were close games to follow with some long rallies before Daniel took the first set. Siva served out the 1st game of the 2nd set before Daniel took the next 5 games in a row. Siva produced a fine service game in the 7th forcing Daniel to serve out for the match. Closer than the score suggests and a lot of good rallies. "  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "Calm and mild weather conditions for this evening match played at Kesgrave TC. Daniel started with the intention of keeping the ball in play as much as possible and it worked well taking the opening set 6-0. With light fading at the start of the 2nd set the floodlights were switched on and at 0-2 Marcus halted Daniel's run of 17 consecutive games over 2 matches by holding serve and then backing it up with another hold. Serving at 3-2, the 6th game was a real tussle but Daniel scraped through to hold and from there managed to do just enough to complete the win. Overall, a very enjoyable match with some really hard-fought points and good serving from both players. "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Mark Scott (Aug 19) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match played in perfect mid-morning conditions at CCP. Daniel managed to get to a 3-0 lead before Mark registered his first game and Daniel was able to take the set comfortably from there despite some close games and good rallies. The 2nd set brought more attacking play from Mark as he looked to take the initiative with some good volleys and net approaches, although a more confident Daniel was able to pick off several passing shots and play consistently well enough to outlast Mark in the rallies. It could easily have been a closer score with Mark leading 40-0 on serve in a couple of games. Good match overall, and I know Mark is already looking forward to a re-match! - Daniel"  -- Daniel

  • "Played on a humid evening at the park both players started playing well with close games throughout the 1st set with a couple of breaks of serve and break backs, Stuart knicking the set. 2nd was much of the same apart from Stuart being slightly more consistent which meant he took the set and match, very enjoyable match thanks."  -- Stuart

Reveal CommentLee Maskell bt Adrian Kemp (Aug 28) 6-0, 4-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Conditions were very difficult on what was a stifling day! The first set was over quite quickly, Adrian was struggling with his serve and Lee's groundstrokes were firing consistently. The second set was a much closer affair, Adrian cut out the double faults and played with a lot of variety to take the set. The 3rd set was even tougher, duece games and neither player giving an inch, with Adiran breaking away to serve for the match at 5-3. Lee however did not give up and managed to save 2 match points, held serve, and managed to break Adrian one last time to seal the match. A highly competitive match and thoroughly enjoyable, thanks Adrian. "  -- Lee

Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Lee Maskell (Aug 8) 4-6, 6-1, 7-6

Player Comments:

  • "Very enjoyable match from the outset with both players striking the ball well and fairly matched, 1st set went the way of Lee with some great games and rallies, 2nd set did not reflect the scoreline as the games were tight with some good shots/net cords swaying the games, 3rd set being again close but now with a splattering of rain to add to the mix, eventually going into a tie-break with Stuart taking it and the match. Great timing for the end of the match as once the last point has been won the heavens opened, great match thanks."  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentIan Plumb bt Lee Maskell (Aug 6) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Ian started well and produced some good forehand shots to race into a 3-0 lead. Lee played some good tennis and was unlucky to lose the first set 6-0 with lots of deuces and good top spin forehands The second set started with ian taking a couple of games before lee got on the board and gained confidence, with serving improving every game. Ian ended up getting over the line 6-2 in this set. Very enjoyable game with an improving player. Cheers"  -- Ian

Player Comments:

  • "A good, late summer's evening for tennis in what turned out to be a slightly surreal match. The first set kicked off with ELEVEN breaks of serve, leaving Ashley with a 6-5 lead, before he at last managed to hold serve and close the set. The second set started off in similar fashion, with 3 more breaks of serve, before Ashley moved into a 4-1 lead. However, Jorunas wasn't done with yet and drew level at 4-4, before Ashley finally managed to break and then hold serve. Both players served reasonably well on the night; this was just a good all round, entertaining game with plenty of rallies and a wide range of shots, which didn’t quite go the way you’d normally expect a tennis match to go, with so many breaks of serve."  -- Ashley
