Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

As the old stager in this group at 52 I am playing my best tennis ever, not quite sure how I beat Hilary and Avery they are much better than me! You have done a great job with the league, encouraging participation and getting the mix right with the correct standards of players in each group,"

Nick Anthony

Peter Valasek

"Thank you for organising the competition. It was very enjoyable, "

"I've had some excellent matches, learnt a few things about myself in relation to match play, met some nice people and made some new tennis buddies which I think is the whole idea of the League - so thank you for that.  I shall look forward to playing in the League again in January!",

Player Comments:

  • "Certainly challenging conditions today, with a strong wind and low bounces on the grass, no doubt due to a heavy rainstorm a couple of hours earlier. But Trevor dealt better with the conditions, and with Nick's trademark sliced shots, to get ahead in each set with an early break, and hold on when Nick started to mount a comeback."  -- Trevor
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Marcus Sheaff (Jun 16) 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Very competitive match played at a windy Sproughton Tennis Club. Marcus started well and adapted to the conditions quicker than Ty taking a 5-2 lead. Ty settled down and raced back to a 6-5 lead but Marcus won the next game and took the tie break 7-5 with some good baseline shots. The second set was very similar to the first with both players struggling with the wind. Ty began to be more consistent and took the set 6-4. In the decider Marcus took a 1-0 lead before an unfortunate event. The locals in the park kicked a football into the tennis courts. Ty tried to be clever, kicked the ball back but unfortunately caught an unaware Marcus on the side of the chin. Marcus took this very well and raced to a 3-0 lead but Ty battled back :) "  -- Tyrone
Reveal CommentMatthew Last bt Trevor Wright (Jun 15) 6-4, 3-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A match full off breaks played in beautiful sun by the seaside on the grass courts at Felixstowe. First set could have gone either way however at 4v4 I finally managed to consolidate a break and serve out the set. Trevor raced away with the second set with fantastically consistent baseline play which resulted in him barely making an error whereas on the other side their we're unfortunately mistakes galore with plenty of cheap points going Trevor's way. Still a set of breaks however Trevor upped his serving game took the second set with ease before bulldozing his way to a 4v1 set lead in the final set. Luckily I dug deep and managed to frequently get to the net to turn the tide of the match in my favour before final getting a hold to win 7v5"  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Trevor Wright (Jun 13) 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "Despite the rain, sun and wind, we managed to complete 2 sets. The strong winds made control difficult, but both players won a set, with the decider due to be played later this week."  -- Trevor
  • "Finally Trevor and Xin played in the cloudy afternoon to finish the match. Both played consistently, 1:1 to 4:4, and at 4:5, Xin was 15:40 up, two match points, but Trevor was very calm and consistent, Xin made 4 unforced errors. Eventually tie break, at 4:6 Trevor retuned wide. Final score 7:6(7:4) to Xin. Very close games!" -- Xin
Reveal CommentCharles Fulcher bt Nick Anthony (Jun 11) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Thanks to Nick for coming to Felixstowe, played on the Grass, Nick had game points in the first 2 games but failed to take them, and lost the first set to 1, the second set was much closer with Nick finding a much better length and running down drop shots, at 3.3 40 love Nick was unlucky to lose the game and then the set "  -- Charles
Reveal CommentTrevor Wright bt Marcus Sheaff (Jun 9) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Played on the acrylic courts at Felixstowe. Marcus was hitting hard and deep, but couldn't get through Trevor's determined defence. The first set had many long rallies and games, until Trevor took the set with a drive volley winner. Marcus upped his attack in the second set and it could have gone either way."  -- Trevor
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Trevor Wright (Jun 5) 6-1, 6-1

Reveal CommentCharles Fulcher bt Avery Jackson (Jun 1) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Avery came to Felixstowe to play on the grass on a lovely Sunny afternoon, the first set was more mistakes than winners as both players struggled with the low bounce, the second set was much better with most games going to deuce, but charlie finally broke serve to win in 2 sets, thanks to Avery for playing on a surface that does not suit him the best - charlie"  -- Charles
Reveal CommentNick Anthony bt Matthew Last (Jun 1) 3-6, 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Nick gained his first win with a hard fought victory over Matt. It was Matt who soon took control of the first set, breaking Nick twice to take a convincing lead. Nick had no answer to Matt's range of sliced winners and was soon a set down at 6-3. In the second Nick was out of the blocks quicker, attacking Matt more and racing into a 5-0 lead. The next two games were shared and the match was levelled. Matt then held serve to love before Nick took the next three games including a break that was to prove decisive. Despite coming under pressure both players then held serve until, at 5-4 Nick was serving for the match. At 15 all Matt made a couple of uncharacteristic errors. At 40-15 Nick produced a backhand winner to end a close match. "  -- Nick
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Xin Chen (Jun 1) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Competitive match played at CCP in very nice weather. Both players served well and both sets could of gone either way with Xin playing very well with his serving and making winners. Tyrone stepped up at the end of both sets to secure the match :-)"  -- Tyrone
Marcus Sheaff bt Matthew Last (May 31) 6-4, 3-6, 6-2
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Nick Anthony (May 26) 7-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Nick and Avery enjoyed another close encounter which ended with Nick still seeking his elusive first win. The first set was shared early in until Avery took a 5-3 and 30-0 lead. Somehow Nick fought back to force a tie break. At 3-1 Nick looked favourite before Avery raised his game and rediscovered his serve to win 6 out of 7 points and take the time break 7-4. Avery's confidence increased and he gradually took control in the second breaking Nick at 3-2 and 40-0 down to take a decisive lead and ended an exciting contest 3 games later."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Matthew Last (May 25) 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "After an exhausting week in London there is no other way to enjoy the weekend than to drive out into the Suffolk countryside to play tennis and Saxmundham offered the perfect setting for this match. I was off the mark and sprinted to end before Matt got started. The second set saw a rejuvenated Matt hitting winners and serving well and deservedly taking the second. The third was a ding dong battle with both players holding serves up until 3-3. Avery managed to take the lead and held on to win the third with Matt chasing right to the end..,a fitting way to spend our Saturday morning...now I am off to soak my feet to start all over again tomorrow."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentCharles Fulcher bt Xin Chen (May 25) 6-2, 6-2

  • "A competitive match which meant the first few games were long but eventually charlie got his forehand going to dictate play and win 7 games in a row"  -- Charles
Marcus Sheaff bt Nick Anthony (May 24) 7-5, 6-3
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Xin Chen (May 19) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another thrilling encounter on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Bt Adastral. The weather was not the best for tennis but both players made the most of the conditions with the first set quite close and could have gone either way. In the second set Xin serve let him down and the continuous cleaning of our spectacle after during serve did not help. Nevertheless we enjoyed our match which was played in good spirits despite the conditions. The second set reflected the drop in quality of the serves and the slippery surfaces which affected Xin more than it did to me."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentCharles Fulcher bt Trevor Wright (May 19) 6-1, 6-2

Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Trevor Wright (May 18) 7-6 (7-2), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable but exhausting game of tennis. Trevor was late out of the blocks in the first set but when he got going it was tough keeping up with his pace. Avery managed to regain his composure and served well in the tie break and was 5-0 up before Trevor responded but not early enough to prevent the win. The second set went on serve to 3-3 until Avery managed to break and held on to win. We both agreed that a refreshing drink and rest would be best after another gruelling match lasting 2 and a half hours."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Matthew Last (May 18) 6-3, 6-3

Tyrone then raced to a 5-0 lead and lost concentration with Matt clawing back three games with some great shot making. Tyrone closed the second set out 6-3 then went in to town and treated himself to a lovely hot dog xx"  -- Tyrone

  • "Great match played under the sunny sun at CCP. Tyrone started very well and despite many games going to deuce took the first set 6-1 . The second set started and before I knew it was 5-0 to Avery. Avery hit a lot of winners. Tyrone pulled it back to 5-3 but Avery served out to take the second 6-3. Tyrone stepped up in the final set taking the first 8 points. The third game of the final set lasted well over ten minutes but Tyrone took this. Tyrone closed out the set but was made to work very hard. Well played both x"  -- Tyrone

Reveal CommentMatthew Last bt Xin Chen (May 11) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Score line doen't really do this match much justice as with the number of deuces we had the sets could have gone either way! First set was pretty much toe to toe with scores level at 3v3 until I managed to string a couple of games in a row to go 5v3 up. In the last game of the set came one of the most bizarre/ luckiest points, where I went to drive volley a floating return from Xin only for me to totally air shot it however somehow the ball ended up bouncing just wide! Hopefully I sub-consciously knew it was out hence the air shot however it's more likely I just had a massive slice of fortune and managed to somehow not touch the ball! Second set was much the same with several long deuces and no easy points on offer. "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Nick Anthony (May 11) 7-5, 6-3

Reveal CommentNick Anthony v Xin Chen (May 5) 6-3, 5-7, 4-4 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "Xin and Nick enjoyed another pulsating match only halted due to Nick sustaining an injury. Nick was quick off the blocks taking a 3-1 lead and despite Xin valiantly trying to level, Nick was able to keep a lead and close the set. The tables were turned in the second, Xin racing into a lead with his trademark backhands only for Nick to draw level. However Xin once again moved ahead to level the match. It was Nick’s turn to take the lead in the final set but at 4-2 up Nick stretched for a return only to pull his hamstring. He tried to continue but after losing the next 2 games and his mobility Xin sportingly agreed to suspend play and finish at a later date. Thank you, Xin."  -- Nick

Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Jamie Cussans (Jun 17) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable match played in warm conditions at Sproughton. The first set was quite staccato, chacterised by short rallies and both of us eliciting errors from the other, and some good winners from both of us too. We shared the first 8 games having broken serve once each. I managed to grab the next two games to take a close set. I had the advantage of serving first in set 2, took the first and broke Jamie in the second. Once I'd got my nose in front I was able to take a few more risks and although several of the games went to deuce I managed to keep the momentum going and closed it out. Thanks for the game Jamie, I look forward to our next match!"  -- Gary
Reveal CommentChris Mitchell bt Jamie Cussans (Jun 17) 7-6 (7-5), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "An exceptional match played in beautiful sunshine on a Monday morning. A high level of tennis belying our position in the league table including a great variety of strokes led to a highly enjoyable game. Some remarkable service games with several deuces set the tone for the match with one particular game at 2-2 in the second set being one for the ages. Looking forward to our next match Jamie!"  -- Chris

Player Comments:

  • "Very gusty conditions at CCP . First set went to a tie break, even tho I'd had plenty of set points, which I failed to take. Just edged the breaker 7-5. Second set, Chris found his range, his forehand bombs hitting the target. Deciding set was at 4-3 to me, when Chris had to retire. Which is of course, a great shame, as the 3rd set could have also gone to another tie breaker. "  -- Mark
Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Chris Mitchell (Jun 6) 6-2, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Played on hot early morning this looked like a long match as the 1st 5 games went to more than 1 deuce in each, Stuart taking a crucial 6th game which set up taking the 1st set. 2nd set after Stuart took the opening game Chris really hit some form with great serves and many thundering forehands to take 6 games in a row to take the 2nd set and go a game up in the 3rd. Stuart took 2nd game to stem the flow and then never looked back to take the 3rd set. Great match with some very good ralllies and close games, thanks. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Mark Scott (Jun 6) 6-2, 5-7, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Another tight tussle which could have gone either way. Set 1 hinged on a very long fourth game which I won to make it 2/2, and then grabbed the next four to take set 1. Set 2 was nip and tuck, I had 5/4 and serving but Mark roared back with 3 in a row to even the match. The early exchanges in set 3 saw some great hitting and defence from both of us but I managed a run of games to clinch it. 2 1/2 enjoyable hours on court, well played Mark"  -- Gary

Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Zelma Green (May 24) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great competitive match played in very warm and sunny conditions with a slight breeze to contend with. I started the more steady of us and took a 3/0 lead before Zelma found her range and played some great attacking shots and worked her way into winning positions but just failed to capitalise at crucial points in games. The second set was very competitive and I had to work really hard to open up opportunities to hit winners, some worked and some didn’t. Zelma took a 3/2 lead with some great angles and good hitting. I managed to draw level and take the next 3 tight games to finish. Well played Zelma, a very enjoyable match, look forward to the next one!"  -- Gary
Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Stuart Horrex (May 22) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was a great contest played in very warm weather. Stuart got off to a great start taking a 4/0 lead and dominating most of the exchanges. I managed to dig in and clawed my way back to 4/4 and eventually squeezed the next two very close games to steal the first set. I took s 2/0 lead in the second only for Stuart to come back at me, the rest of the games in the set were nip and tuck, most going to deuce and including some long rallies and good winners from us both. We played in good humour and with sportsmanship, and special mention to Stuart for overruling himself on a baseline call in my favour late in the match which was very sporting. Thanks for a great match Stuart well played"  -- Gary

It was only really in the 3rdset, that I finally managed to work myself into a winning position. The winners at the net ,meant I had less of struggle to close the match. Cheers Jamie."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Stuart Horrex (May 18) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Daniel got off to a solid start winning the opening 4 games before Stuart's play improved greatly to take a couple of games from the remainder of the set. The first 2 games of the 2nd set were shared before Daniel was able to get ahead to 4-1. Stuart took a more attacking approach and it worked very well taking 2 games in a row and bring the score back to 3-4. A couple more lucky netcords and some narrow misses from Stuart helped to see Daniel through, although the improvement in Stuart's play since our last meeting quite recently was clear to see and the 2nd set could have gone either way. "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Mark Scott (May 17) 6-2, 6-1

Daniel held on to take the first set but it wasn't long until won another game taking the lead in the 2nd set. The majority of the final set was closely contested and a number of deuce games could have resulted in a closer scoreline but Daniel held out to take the win. "  -- Daniel

  • "Played on a overcast day with the threat of rain that luckily did not turn up until the end, both players playing very well meant a close 3 set match. Stuart starting of the stronger taking the 1st set although lots of deuce games that could have gone either way. 2nd set Zelma started very strong taking 1st 3 games before Stuart nicked one, Zelma taking the next before Stuart got next 3 to level at 4-4, Zelma then took the next 2 to close out set. 3rd set was again very close all the way through with Stuart taking important points to take the set and match. Great game and look forward to playing Zelma again. "  -- Stuart

  • "A great match played on an overcast and cool day. We were both finding our feet in set 1, I got ahead 3/0 only to see Chris come back to 3/2. I got the next and managed to keep ahead to secure set 1. The second set was huge fun, Chris took a 2/0 lead, I made it 2/1 and then a mammoth game ensued with numerous deuces/ game points which I scraped to get to 2/2. I won the next 3 to get to 5/2 and with the finish in sight Chris blew me off court in the next 3 with excellent forehands and great defence when needed. With a tie break looming I dug in and sneaked a 6/5 lead and just managed to hold for 7/5. A cracking match played in great spirit and both sets could have gone either way, pleasure to be on court with you Chris "  -- Gary

It didn't take long to feel like the breeze had all but disappeared with both players feeling the heat on court. After I took the first set Jamie pulled the second back. After getting everything in the earlier sets I took advantage of the hot conditions and Jamie tiring on occasion in the third. Another epic with Jamie with some fantastically long points and deuce games. I look forward to our next meeting in perhaps hotter conditions in the next round! "  -- Zelma

Despite some very tight games and some gruelling rallies Daniel managed to sneak almost all of them and it wasn't until 5-0 in the 2nd set that Chris managed to get onto the scoreboard again. Great that the rain held off and the match was a very enjoyable one with plenty of physically demanding rallies."  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Zelma Green (May 5) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "This was the first time me and Zelma have played and she was rightly disappointed not to have won more than 1 game in the match. The blustery conditions were tricky to play with and unfortunately it did have an effect on many points. Despite this, there were many good rallies and some very good points. One game in particular on Zelma's serve must have had almost 10 deuces! An enjoyable match and I look forward to our next meeting. "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Mark Scott (May 3) 4-6, 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "As our previous encounters this was a close, friendly, competitive match with many long games and deuces. Mark started the stronger in the 1st set going into a 5-1 lead before Stuart dug in to claim next 3 games before Mark closing out the set. 2nd set went to stuart albeit with close games and crucial points won. 3rd set did not dissapoint with very close games and great rallies again with Stuart taking crucial points and getting more than his fair share of net cord decisions, great game as always, thanks. "  -- Stuart

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable game with Paul playing some really good backhand shots and successful with some nice drop shots. I was a bit stiff after my match with Simon the previous day and in the second set lost some eyeballs serving into the sun! It was a good game though with Paul improving with every game and my serve on point today (except when staring into the sun!!). Thanks Paul."  -- Andrew
Reveal CommentSimon White bt Andrew Wilesmith (Jun 14) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Thank you Andrew for an absolutely brilliant match. It took the first set to get going, but the second was the hardest fought set I've played throughout this tournament, it was just luck on the key points that swung it my way! All the best for the remaining fixtures and I hope you can fit them all in before the end."  -- Simon
Reveal CommentAshley Miller bt Justin Morey (Jun 2) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A glorious morning for tennis, almost a bit too humid. Both players made a stuttering start, with broken service for the first 4 games until 2-2, at which point Ashley finally managed to hold serve, going on to take the set. The second set started in much the same way, with broken service for the first 2 games, before Ashley took a 3-1 lead. Justin pulled one game back, but it wasn’t enough, despite some good lob shots along the way and Ashley eventually prevailed. The heat made a relatively short match feel like both players had played for a lot longer!"  -- Ashley

Reveal CommentJorunas Barzdzius bt Ashley Miller (May 27) 6-4, 2-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A fine morning for tennis, albeit with generous cloud cover. Jorunas set the tone by breaking to love in the very first game, before Ashley levelled to 1-1. Good play by Jorunas coupled with unforced errors from Ashley then enabled Jorunas to 4 games in a row & a commanding lead. Ashley tried to rally, pulling back to 4-5, before Jorunas held serve to take the first set. After winning 3 of the last 4 games in the first set, Ashley managed to continue that form in the second set. The 3rd set saw Jorunas step back up again, with the points ebbing & flowing throughout. After saving 2 match points at 5-3, Ashley clawed it back to 5-5, but Jorunas was too strong & closed it out on his 4th match point for a deserved win."  -- Ashley

Reveal CommentJustin Morey bt Paul Cryer (May 19) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "After a slighty wait as all the courts were busy, paul and I finally got going. The score did not reflect the tennis played, with a lot of games going to duece, Paul struggled a bit getting his first serve in, when he did they were difficult to return. With a few more games under his belt he will be a force to be reckoned with. In the first set I raced out to 3-0 but paul pulled it back to 3-2, even when i led 4-3 it was all to play for. In the second set i again raced out to 3-0, but this time i won the tight games. I would like to thank paul for an enjoyable game and hope he has more luck in his upcoming games."  -- Justin
