This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Thank you very much for the organisation of the tennis leagues. I have taken part in the Ipswich Christchurch Park league for the first time this round after a long time off from playing tennis. I think this is a great way of getting to play regularly and meet new people to play. I have had great, enjoyable matches with some very friendly people. My league matches may be finished for this round but have already arranged a couple of extra games within my group of players and will definitely be entering the next round. Once again thank you for the leagues as without dedicated people like yourself this would not be possible. Very happy player," Stuart Horrex

Stuart Horrex

"I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this round of matches and playing each of you in the group. We should also congratulate ourselves as a group, as we managed to play ALL our matches, with everything wrapped up by 1st June with 10 days to spare! I reckon that's pretty impressive with everybody leading ever-busier lives and the amount of inclement weather along the way :)  Hopefully see some or all of you in the next round :)"

Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Avery Jackson (Jul 5) 7-6 (7-3), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A very tiring match, perhaps we were helped by the 3 courts changes at a busy Christchurch Park. Avery started the match strongly taking a 4-2 lead. A change of court and 10 minutes later Daniel finally started playing much better but it was such a close set a tie-break was probably a fair way to end it. The 2nd set started off going Daniel's way, taking a 3-1 lead before an unusual sequence saw Avery win 4 straight games taking him to a 5-3 lead before Daniel won 4 straight games to take the match when a 3rd set looked more likely. Great hitting, great serving and plenty of hard fought points. Very good match. "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Daniel Peck (Jul 4) 4-1, 5-3

Player Comments:

  • "Competitive match played at a busy CCP. Tyrone started well and as always many games went to Deuce with Tyrone taking the edge in the first set. We decided to play short sets as the park was busy which appeared to go in Dan's favour as he lead 3-2 (0-40) but Tyrone buckled down saving three set points and went on to take the second 5-3 xx"  -- Tyrone
Reveal CommentMarcus Sheaff bt Daniel Peck (Jun 30) 2-4, 5-3, [10-6]

Player Comments:

  • "We re-newed our rivalry going back twelve years at the place where it all started. We played the new short-set format which is a great idea and has been introduced at the perfect time. I took a lead to go to 2-1, 30-0, then Daniel pulled some tricks out of his bag to turn the set around. The second set was another case of de ja vu with me ahead at a similar scoreline but it went a different way with me keeping my nose in front and not letting it slip. Daniel made me win the additional game required at 4-3 to edge another close set. This meant a match tie-break to decide another very close contest. Daniel took an early lead before I got going again and found the right track again to victory after almost two hours of firey but fair tennis."  -- Marcus
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Trevor Wright (Jun 29) 7-6 (7-4), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Having not picked up a tennis racquet for several months Tyrone was a little nervous coming into this match against Trevor who had lost a close encounter the day before. Tyrone started well racing to a 2-0 lead but as ever Trevor hang in every point and defended very well and gained a 5-3 lead. Trevor served for the set at 5-4, leading 30-15 Tyrone had to go for his shots and was very lucky hitting the net cord two times in a row and to eventually level up the set. Tyrone took a 4-0 lead in the tie break and despite a fightback form Trevor the deficit was too much to come back. With the first set behind him Tyrone relaxed and started to put more power behind the groundstrokes and took advantage of an exhausted Trevor. Great to be back x "  -- Tyrone
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Trevor Wright (Jun 28) 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable return to the tournament in windy conditions at the Felixstowe tennis grounds. Both players struggled with serves in the first set. Trevor was fastest out of the blocks and show great resilience to close out the first set. The second and third were very close and could have gone either way. Thoroughly enjoyable and a great match to start after a tough period for all during lockdown."  -- Avery

Match Results:

Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Philippa Cowie (Jul 6) 6-2, 7-6 (9-7)

Player Comments:

  • "Played on a blustery day at Sproughton which was challenging. Set 1 was tighter than the score might suggest with most games going to deuce and only the odd point deciding the games. The second set was a very close affair with both of us struggling to win service games and dogged defence from both of us winning out over outright winners. I had leads at 3/1, 4/2 and 5/4 but Pip pegged me back each time, and cruised the 12th game to take us to the tiebreak. That too was nip and tuck with Pip having a set point to take it to a third set before I just managed to squeak it. If we’d have gone to a third I think Pip would have won. Well played Pip"  -- Gary
Reveal CommentMark Scott bt Mike Gibson (Jul 6) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another blustery morning at sproughton and a first time match against Mike. After my last game v Stuart, I was hoping to actually get the ball into play! Thankfully, I was quite consistent today and it was Mike making the most errors. Thanks for the game Mike."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Philippa Cowie (Jul 4) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A very cloudy morning, but muggy too. Xin started very strong and rarely faultered in the first set, with only a couple of chances for Pip to get a game thwarted convincingly. Second set started more evenly with the first three games going against the server. A combination of Pip's serve improving and a spate of unforced errors from Con (much to his frustration) meant much closer games. Xin regained his composure before long and closed the second set out with conviction. A very enjoyable match and good exercise. Thank you, Xin!"  -- Philippa
Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Mark Scott (Jul 3) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great to be back on court after not playing for few months. This was an unusually low standard game compared to previous encounters with both players struggling to get into any rhythm. Mark started the better going into 4-1 then 5-2 lead before Stuart won 5 in a row to take the set although unfortunately mainly down to Mark's forehand misses. 2nd set was again not pretty with many mistakes made by both, Stuart managed to get over the line somehow. Look forward to our normal standard of match next time. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentMark Scott bt Gary Wolton (Jun 29) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A blustery overcast morning at sproughton. First set was tight and serve was broken by both players a few times. I made a few less errors to take first set. I expected a resurgence from Gary in the 2nd set, but if anything, I managed to get my consistency levels up a notch, and was surprised to take the set and the match. As ever, a battle royale against Gary . Social distance was observed throughout the match , with an elbow bump instead of a handshake! Thanks for the game Gary."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Jack Rich (Jun 28) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Played at sunny CCP, unfortunately Jack twisted ankle at 1st game 0:30 when receiving a return. After a short medical timeout, Jack wanted to have a go and we managed to finished the game. It was played in a good spirit. Good fighting spirit, Jack!"  -- Xin

Match Results:

Reveal CommentDavid Sendall bt Spencer Dunn (Jul 6) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Spencer is just getting back into tennis after some time out. The first set looked to be heading for 6-0, but Spencer did well to hold his serve and force me to serve for the set. In the second set, there were closer games and Spencer started to relax into some shots. One particular reach on a drop shot that he finished cross court on the forehand was very good. In the end though, I was able to close the match out. Thanks for the match Spencer."  -- David
Peter Haystead bt Spencer Dunn (Jul 2) 6-4, 6-2
Reveal CommentDavid Sendall bt Peter Haystead (Jul 1) 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "Peter and I have played twice before with a win apiece, so it was no real surprise this one went the distance. The first set was tight with neither player seeming to be able to hold serve. Peter found consistency quicker and was able to win the first set. In the second, I found a bit of rhythm and took the first 3 games. A double break proved decisive as I took the second set. The third set saw me serve for the match at 5-4, but Peter got the break he needed. Both players held serve and the inevitable tie break loomed. Peter took a mini break on the first point. From then on, we exchanged points until we reached 4-4. Then I was able to win 3 points in a row to claim a hard fought win. Thank you Peter. Another very close match."  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Sendall bt Simon White (Jun 29) 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This turned into a bit of an epic. The first set went my way with Simon feeling his way back in. I was 5-2 up in the second ready to put the match to bed. Simon had other ideas. He fought back superbly to take the second set on a tie break. The third set was going with serve up to 3-3. Then I finally managed to break Simon's serve, hold and break again to claim a hard earned win. This match was full of ridiculous retrievals, some very good winners and more drop shots than I can remember! Thanks for a thrilling match Simon."  -- David
Reveal CommentDavid Sendall bt James Bradbrook (Jun 25) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A good match to start the new round. James and I exchanged games in the first 2 games, both holding serve. 6-1 first set doesn't do James any justice. In the second set, I took a 5-0 lead before James took 2 games in a row and threatened a comeback. I closed out in the end. Thanks for the match James. Good luck in your future matches."  -- David

  • "Conditions were very slippy with the rain that had started half an hour before the game commenced that continued until the last half hour. Tennis was very tentative and neither of us could hold our serves .I squeeked past the first set 6 v 3 there were a few long rallies which we both had about a 50% win rate with. I was very lucky to have won this game as all games were very close. Thanks for the game Yorunas see you for a knock up in the future . "  -- Tim

Player Comments:

  • "During the first set josh and i were just getting warmed up and testing the waters every game points were hard fought i really have to focus on returning serve because josh's serve was fast paced and quite difficult to return.. On the second set however were both warmed up and started strong and each of us broke serves resulted to 1-1, as the game goes on there were long ralies and lots of dueces and we eventually get to 5-1 in favor of me. At this point josh doubled his efforts and worked his way up to 5-5. It ended at 7-5 both josh and i gave our best and enjoyed the game. Thank you josh for the nice game. Looking forward to play with you again. Cheers!"  -- Benhar
