Player Comments:

  • "Gusty swirling crosswinds made for tricky conditions, that plus factor in Daniels devilish backhand slice made timing the ball near impossible! First set was somewhat random with a pretty inconsistent pattern of breaks and holds, with the first hold not coming until the sixth game! Daniel with the great mix of consistent defence and cracking attacking angles held on to win the first set. Luckily for me I managed to get on top of the error count in the second and managed to drag myself back into the match by upping the intensity and getting to the net alot more. Final set was close from start to finish resulting in a tie break to settle the match. Like most the match, very little to separate the players however I just about clinched it."  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentMatthew Last bt Xin Chen (Oct 10) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable morning of tennis at Kesgrave. Managed to get off to a flier going 5v0 however from that point it was very much a nip and tuck game with not much to separate both players. "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentAnthony Tolman bt Daniel Peck (Oct 8) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "On a still, slightly damp, but warm day in Woodbridge! we had court 6! After losing a ball in the warm up in to the vegetable patch I joked that I had not lost a ball there in any of my matches! I knew this would be the kiss of death to at least one ball! and it was! We started with some close rallies, Daniel playing tricky tennis with heavy slice and short balls, and myself struggling to find a rhythm. I managed take the first 3 games but then Daniel clawed back to 3-2, I managed to edge a couple of close games before closing out the set. It was closer than the score line would suggest! The second set was more of the same but I managed to just edge a game at 3-1 to make it 4-1, I took the next 2 games 6-1. Very enjoyable! :)"  -- Anthony
Xin Chen bt Stuart Horrex (Oct 8) Walkover
Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Charlie Law (Oct 3) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Played in a windy afternoon, and in friendly spirit. Charlie was not in-form, so made my game easier. We had quite a few good rallies and points, despite the wind. "  -- Xin
Reveal CommentAnthony Tolman bt Charlie Law (Sep 28) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "After initially trying to decide which court would have the least wind we opted for the court we had booked! Hooray! It was a scrappy first set that was much closer than the score line would indicate, after a close first service game with the wind, I managed to get a healthy lead going up 4-0, Charlie pulled one back but I did manage to clinch with a couple more close games. I think we had 4 or more deuce games in the set that could have gone either way. For the second set it was more of the same but I managed to just edge it when things got close. I think we both left the courts feeling a little frustrated as the wind was so bad, it didnt allow us to play our full flowing game... it was very scrappy! Thanks again Charlie!"  -- Anthony
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Philippa Cowie (Sep 26) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable game of tennis played under the floodlights at Kesgrave tennis club. Avery started on the front foot in this game knowing anything else could be detrimental against one of the tournament fitter player. The second set was a more closer encounter with longer rallies and less unforced errors on both sides of the fence. A rather fitting way to end the weekend "  -- Avery
Reveal CommentAnthony Tolman bt Xin Chen (Sep 26) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "What looked like nice cool conditions actually turned out to be very sticky and sweaty! However there was little wind and nice cloud cover making it good playing conditions over all! The first set although 6-1 was much closer than the score would indicate, however I managed to clinch it despite a mis firing forehand. The second set was similar, I managed to get to 5-0 before Xin took two games back with a hold of serve and a break of mine... again it was closer than the score would indicate. A thoroughly enjoyable game and a great start to a Sunday! :)"  -- Anthony
Reveal CommentPhilippa Cowie bt Stuart Horrex (Sep 23) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A very humid evening for this match where the first game certainly reminded us both of our previous three set encounter a few rounds ago, with advantage swinging between the two before finally being settled by the server, Stuart. The next couple of games stayed on serve before Pip kicked things up a gear and claimed a run of nine games to take the first set and start strong. Stuart pulled one back with some excellent serves, but Pip held her form and nerve to take the next two. A very competitive match that came down to critical points being won and both players hitting close to the lines all around the court. Thanks, Stuart."  -- Philippa
Reveal CommentMatthew Last bt Charlie Law (Sep 21) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable morning of tennis in glorious weather (sun probably abit too bright at times though.... Made serving pretty interesting!) Scoreline pretty flattering on my part with some great baseline exchanges. Charlie by his own admission made a few more unforced errors than usual which added with my backhand down the line racking up the winners lead to a fairly comfortable win but certain the next meeting between us will be a much tighter affair. "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Stuart Horrex (Sep 18) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The first set was quite balanced throughout with both players hitting and serving well with long rallies during each points. The second was more of the same and would have continued on the same trend if Stuart had not sustained an injury. An enjoyable game played in lovely weather at Christchurch Park."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentAnthony Tolman bt Matthew Last (Sep 14) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I will keep this short as I have lost all energy! it was a great match, gruelling at points, and tricky because of the wet courts... both Matt and I nearly injured ourselves quite heavily at different points using our clay court slides but on the hard courts of Sax! I managed to edge it but it could have gone either way!"  -- Anthony
Reveal CommentMatthew Last bt Stuart Horrex (Sep 14) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Managed to somehow fit this match in in-between the showers on a gloomy Tuesday morning. Enjoyable match as ever with Stuart with plenty of top rallies and some excellent passing shots from Stuart. Cheers Stuart for driving down to Saxmundham for the match. "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentMatthew Last bt Philippa Cowie (Sep 13) 4-6, 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Fantastic battle in warm conditions at Kesgrave. Pip started off the livelier with lightning quick movement and ever consistent great depth putting myself under immense pressure leading to error after error. This resulted in a fairly comfortable set for Pip who ended up winning the first set 6v4. With a change of racket and balls I managed to finally get a foothold of the match winning the next two sets 6v2. Scoreline pretty flattering on my part as only real difference was a few more cheap points on my serve, rallies we're pretty 50/50 once the ball was in play. Thanks Pip for supplying the court and balls and well done on winning the first set with some exceptional court coverage. "  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Philippa Cowie (Sep 12) 7-5, 4-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Played in humid afternoon, apart from that weather was almost perfect. Pippa started well by leading 2:0, then I managed to level up, and finally broke Pippa serve and hold mine for first set. Similar story for set 2, at 4:4 Pippa hold the serve and I was exhausted, could not hold my game. Lucky I had prepared 2 bananas (lesson learnt from playing Daniel), and I managed to gain some strength, and won 3rd set. "  -- Xin

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Daniel Peck (Sep 11) 0-6, 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Dan had indicated before the start that he had been watching Emma and Novak but I was in shock after his first set performance. He was serving and hitting well on both sides and I struggled to get a look in. I would have been off the court and in the locker room earlier if Dan had kept us his intensity. At 3-3 in the second I was gifted with three double faults from Dan and managed to pull ahead in the second and to close out. In the third it was another close battle with Dan showing great form right to the end. Another enjoyable and exhausting match played in great spirit as always."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentAnthony Tolman bt Philippa Cowie (Sep 7) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "After the club morning arrived mid first game and proceeded to move around behind the court, we decided to move on to the far end court that we had booked to completed the match... after the initial heckling and mock grunting noises made by the local builders we settled in to it :) Pip took the first 2 games to 30 and 15 and we had some good baseline exchanges, I managed to edge the set 6-2, and was feeling fairly confident in my shots by that point. Although it was a struggle with the sun there was very little wind and absolutely lovely conditions. Pip played good baseline play, and served consistently, also in the latter stages mixing her game up coming to the net forcing me to go for my shots. It was most enjoyable! :) "  -- Anthony
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Philippa Cowie (Sep 7) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another close match against Pippa played under the floodlights at Kesgrave. Pip got off to a good start going 2-1 and then 3-2 up before I levelled at 3-3. We then had to change court which seemed to change my fortunes a bit taking the next 3 games for the set before breaking the strings on my racket, which actually helped my play become a little more consistent in the rallies going 3-0 up in the 2nd. Pip fought back to 5-3 playing some lovely shots but I managed to hold out, helped by some useful serves at the right times. "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Xin Chen (Sep 4) 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Played in ideal conditions at Kesgrave, this was my first game for a few weeks and it certainly felt like it, feeling very drained after only a few games. I lead 2-0 and then 4-2 but Xin also reeled off 2 games in a row twice to make it 2-2 then 4-4 and ultimately a tie-break was a fair way to decide the first set. The second set was another tight one with Xin timing his double-handed backhand to perfection on numerous occasions and getting many first serves in which resulted in a deserved set win. The 3rd set started close again but reducing the unforced error count really helped see me through a very tough match which lasted 3hrs not including the warm up, ouch! "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentAnthony Tolman bt Stuart Horrex (Sep 3) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Had a good hit in light winds but with bright sunshine! Most enjoyable!"  -- Anthony
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Charlie Law (Aug 30) 7-6 (7-4), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Charlie had an impressive run of 7-8 straight sets games coming into this match and showed great form and resilience in the first set. Slight drizzle at Grundisburgh during the early morning but we managed to play for an hour before the tie break decider. The second set was a bit of the same with good hitting and long rallies until our neighbour decided it was time to mow his lawn and the unforced errors started to creep in. Nevertheless, an enjoyable and exhausting game with an opponent who should win group one if not this time around, in the near future ......."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentCharlie Law bt Brian Todd (Aug 29) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Close first set and close second set but I got lucky at the important points best wishes!"  -- Charlie
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Xin Chen (Aug 28) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "The weatherman forecast was for British barbecue weather on a day when we had a bit of everything. That did not stop Xin and I from enjoying another good day of tennis. The wind played its part and Xin was more affected with few more unforced errors than.in previous matches. An enjoyable game despite the mistake in the forecast now off to get our barbecue meal from out local restaurant."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentCharlie Law bt Stuart Horrex (Aug 25) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Although we appeared to arrive to play tennis shortly after the rest of Ipswich, we were lucky that some fellows left early on, and hence we set upon their court with an appetite for tennis. From the outset, it was clear it would be a close game with long rallies as we were both pretty happy to sit at the back of the court and throw it back and forth. In the end I believe my regular playing came out on top as Stuart has been off with a knee injury for quite a while. He made some truly tremendous passing shots though all the same. All the best Stuart, hope to you play you again. "  -- Charlie
Reveal CommentCharlie Law bt Philippa Cowie (Aug 23) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A light wind gently lilted through Kesgrave Sports Centre on a rather dreary day in Suffolk. Holiday-making Brits stuck in the UK this year curse these overcast days, but for the keen tennis player it really is lovely. The first set was a pitter/patter set of mishits with some truly dreadful points given away by both sides. However when we cracked open both our sets of free Slazenger balls from the league afore and snorted that sweet glue-rubber fragrance, we found a new lease of life and were spinning and winning those angles like top tennis pros. Unfortunately Pip fell and grazed her knee and possibly that was the reason I came out on top in a close match with long rallies. "  -- Charlie

Player Comments:

  • "Kieran has come back to tennis having reportedly played a lot as a youngster. I'm pleased to have met him at this stage rather than after more court time as his ground strokes will likely be immense and the glimmers currently bode very well for his game going forward. Enjoyed it Thanks Kieran and look forward to meeting you on court in the future... Z"  -- Zelma
Reveal CommentZelma Green bt Bill Garside (Oct 8) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "This was my third match against Bill over the years and today's score was more favourable to me than previous ones. After several attempts to play, something seemed to be conspiring against Bill today from endless balls dropping just out or hitting the top of the net and coming back, to car problems and finally a cut finger! A score that flattered me with less errors than I often bring. Enjoyed it Bill Thanks for the games. Z"  -- Zelma

  • "Great game, Keiran's got great technique. Really felt like at any time he was just going to start whooping me. Given a bit more recent playing and feel I reckon he'll be lethal, especially on the forehand which is a huge weapon and technically looks great. Hope to play again, thanks for the game"  -- Alfie

Reveal CommentZelma Green bt Ashley Miller (Oct 3) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The first set started with both sides getting games. Contrary to about every forecast the skies opened in the second set and paused play. Ashley was up in the crucial seventh and perhaps should have taken it to 3-4 rather than 2-5 prior to my managing to close the next. We played a third set for fun.. almost in the sun.. despite the shade of the trees. Thanks Ashley. Z"  -- Zelma
Reveal CommentKieran Perez bt Kieran Moore (Oct 2) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "My final game of the round. First set Scoreline does not really represent how difficult the set was and it started from my first service game where it took nearly 10 minutes for me to earn my first game. The court was wet, and slippery would’ve been an understatement. Both of us not willing injuries although Kieran did cover a good amount of court with some great rallies. 2nd set was closer with me just edging away at the end. So much power especially through Kieran’s forehand ! Good game. "  -- Kieran
Reveal CommentMark Scott bt Zelma Green (Sep 25) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A muggy morning at sproughton, and another match with Zelma. We first played in these leagues back in 2014, but haven't had many meetings. This match was about unforced errors, and I was able to play my consistent game, with some good net play. The first set was a brief affair, and Zelma didn't get going until the 2nd. But eventually, I was able to serve out the match. Thanks, and hope to play you again next year Zelma."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentKieran Perez bt Mark Scott (Sep 17) 7-5, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Decent game. Mark gets around the court well and his net play was different for me to contend with so was a great challenge. First set was very close although neither of us able to hold serve for the first 6 games. Mainly short rallies but a few really good ‘centre court’ rallies with the momentum switching from defence to attack. Second set was also close, mark leading 4-1, I managed to claw back and take it to the wire. A good game in lovely conditions! Courts were a little slippy tho with both players taking a tumble! "  -- Kieran
Reveal CommentZelma Green bt Josh Francis (Sep 13) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "I got off to a strong start in the first but couldn't quite close it with Josh pulling three back at five love prior to a slighlty jammy net shot securing the set for me. The second set was rather different with Josh storming to a 5-2 lead before a stern internal monologue and my clawing it back to take the second 7-5. Thanks for the match Josh."  -- Zelma
Reveal CommentKieran Perez bt Bill Garside (Sep 13) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great game with Bill! What a top bloke. Covered some serious ground throughout both sets and we had some really good rallies. First set scoreline certainly flatters me, but probably not a fair reflection on that set. Bill has a killer drop shot, when it works it spins a ton and I couldn’t get near it. Great game. "  -- Kieran
Reveal CommentAlfie Harries bt David Mann (Sep 13) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Good match! I probably served better than I ever have right out of the gate which I felt a bit bad about - i think we worked out that I had to hit 1 second serve in the entire first set. In the 2nd David started to play really well and get some good returns off the first serve and was killing me on some great drop shots, going up 2-1. I went back to the base line rallying and managed to close it out, but a good match and a nice bloke to chat with and it was really good spirited. "  -- Alfie
Reveal CommentKieran Perez bt Zelma Green (Sep 10) 6-1, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "Another great game. Zelma battled well, we had some great games taking us to nearly 1 hour 30 minutes. Zelma went 1-0 up in the first, but I managed to claw the remaining games to win 6-1. The second set was far tighter tho, with scores tied at 3 games each, Zelma took a 5-3 lead but again I managed to claw back the next couple of games. Tie break ensued and I managed to just secure the victory of the second set. Zelma has a great serve and gets around the court so well! Great game. "  -- Kieran

I started trying to push her to the back of the court and then go go for drop shots which i'm usually rubbish at but today were working really well. Overall though a great game and really competitive "  -- Alfie

Player Comments:

  • "Ashley came out of the blocks firing and went 1-0 up but after some really long games, not so long rallies but many deuce games I managed to go 1 set up. Similar start in the 2nd set with an incredibly long game at 2-1 that lasted at least 10 minutes, both players having multiple opportunities to secure the game. Such a big game to lose for either player, the rest of the set was completed with many games going the distance. A harsh Scoreline on Ashley but a great match. Ashley covered some serious miles on the court and showed great character throughout. "  -- Kieran

After some long deep rallies, Alfie went 4-0 up and wasn’t going to lose the first set. Second set was marginally quicker but with so many games going the distance. I secured the second set despite a certain court violation, otherwise known as a ‘strop’ (sorry mate). Final set, Alfie took a strong lead but I managed to claw it back to yet another tie break, momentum was swinging throughout. After about 5 match points each, and some seriously good returns the thoroughly enjoyable match ended 15-13. A seriously competitive game, Alfie really does have all the shots! Great fun and a lovely chap! "  -- Kieran

  • "Great morning for tennis with light cloud, sunshine & a gentle breeze, on a single (well-kept-secret) public court in Shotley Gate. This was the players’ first league encounter, although they had played a friendly the previous week. Ashley broke serve initially on the way to a 2-0 lead, after which Kieran held serve & the competitiveness kicked in all the way to 5-5, with plenty of powerful baseline rallies, a handful of drop shots… and a few off the wood of the racket! At 5-5 Ashley managed to break serve once again, before finally holding serve to close out the set on the hour. The 2nd set was of similar quality, albeit lasting only half the time, which was a shame, as Kieran’s serve was just starting to fire on all cylinders."  -- Ashley

Player Comments:

  • "Really good game, we had some really good base line rallies and Josh was hitting some great slices and deep forehands that were winning him alot of points. Luckily the serve was working today for me (Alfie) and i managed to win alot of points on it. Overall really good match though and a hell of a workout with rallies frequently hitting 10+ shots."  -- Alfie
Reveal CommentAlfie Harries bt Ashley Miller (Aug 19) 6-0, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Had some really close games that stayed at deuce for a while, so the score didn't really reflect the competition in many of the games. I think lots of recent game experience helped me (Alfie) see out the close games. I think if we'd played this match later in the round where the recent match experience would have been more balanced, the score would have been far closer as when Ashley was making his shots they were deep and with pace."  -- Alfie
