Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Thank you for organising the competition. It was very enjoyable, "

Nick Anthony

"Thank you very much for the organisation of the tennis leagues. I have taken part in the Ipswich Christchurch Park league for the first time this round after a long time off from playing tennis. I think this is a great way of getting to play regularly and meet new people to play. I have had great, enjoyable matches with some very friendly people. My league matches may be finished for this round but have already arranged a couple of extra games within my group of players and will definitely be entering the next round. Once again thank you for the leagues as without dedicated people like yourself this would not be possible. Very happy player," Stuart Horrex

Stuart Horrex

"Very much enjoying the league, thank you for your efforts. As the old stager in this group at 52 I am playing my best tennis ever, not quite sure how I beat Hilary and Avery they are much better than me! You have done a great job with the league, encouraging participation and getting the mix right with the correct standards of players in each group,"

Nick Anthony

"Thank you for the congrats. Group winning tastes like the best lager!  Thank you Sally and Nigel for being good organisers. Good job.  I plan to rejoin our leaque in September,"

Waldemar Kapkowski

"I'd like to say again how much I enjoyed playing in the league. I met interesting people, and have played some good matches,"

Peter Valasek

Player Comments:

  • "Nick continued his good form with a hard fought win over a determined Matt. Nick started quicker, his wide serves and forehands troubling Matt and soon raced into a 5-1 lead. Matt gamely fought back with two quick games and then with Nick on 0-30 down looked to be staging a comeback. However Nick composed himself and finally closed the set. It was Nick in command in the second taking a 5-3 and 30-0 lead on serve. Moving Natt around the court Nick faced an easy smash for 3 match points and missed it. Matt took his chance with deft slices and excellent court coverage he overturned the advantage and stormed to 7-5 victory. Game on, Nick broke Matt in a marathon game then breaks galore before Nick crucially broke and then held on to win."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentNick Anthony bt Trevor Wright (Aug 15) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nick hit his best form of the summer to clinch a comprehensive win over an out of sorts Trevor. Nick started the better, gaining a 3-1 lead only for Trevor to blast back with 3 games to take control. Nick had to break Trevor and with some big attacking shots clinched three games on the trot to take the set. Trevor was stung into action and had break points in the opening game of the second set but Nick hung on for a crucial hold. This time Trevor was under pressure, and was making uncharacteristic mistakes to allow Nick a double break and a 5-2 lead. Serving to win the match Nick took a 40-15 lead but as usual Trevor never gave up. A rally at40-30 saw Nick flick a short forehand out of Trevor’s reach to gain an important victory ."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentTrevor Wright bt Marcus Sheaff (Aug 4) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Both players started off serving well, though neither player was that successful at the net today, possibly the wind hindering volleying more that the grass assisted. Service games were held comfortably until eventually I managed to break serve. Wish we hadn't been talking about breaks of serve just before I served at 5.4 up - I promptly double faulted and was soon 0.40 down. But as Marcus put it, I put on the afterburners to run down a distant, angled shot to hit a backhand winner, and recovered to win the game and the first set. In the second set, rally lengths increased but I went up 3.0 and despite Marcus breaking back I held on to win the set."  -- Trevor
Reveal CommentNick Anthony bt Daniel Peck (Aug 3) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Nick and Daniel enjoyed and endured a tough two set tussle lasting almost 2 hours. After a long first game Nick held serve and then broke Daniel to start a number of breaks in the set. At 4-4 the match was anyone’s. Nick just managed to hold serve and then courtesy of some vicious backhand slices broke Daniel to love to take a set lead. Nick then took a 3-0 lead only for a rejuvenated Daniel to hit back with 3 games to level. Another long service game gave Nick the lead and a break against Daniel meant all Nick had to do was hold serve. As usual Daniel came storming back and used the whole court to force Nick into errors. Back on serve at 4-5 Daniel succumbed to some more backhand slices and Nick edged a tense and tiring battle."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Trevor Wright (Aug 2) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "What better way to prepare for a Saturday morning match than play a 3hr Friday night match that doesn't finish until 21:10!! Playing Trevor was like playing a brick wall and although the 1st set went Daniel's way the 2nd was close all the way until at 4-4 Trevor dug deep and pinched the set in fine style with some accurate passing shots. The 3rd set was again very close every game and had Daniel not served himself out of 2 games at 0-40 down with the help of a generous net cord it could easily have been a different result. "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Trevor Wright (Aug 1) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great match played in great conditions at Christchurch Park . Trevor played well and pushed Tyrone all the way. Trevor had a 3-2 30-0 lead but Tyrone stepped it up a level and took the match 6-2 6-3"  -- Tyrone
Marcus Sheaff bt Gary Wolton (Jul 29) 7-5, 6-1
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Gary Wolton (Jul 28) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A highly competitive match played in good spirits. The games were much closers than the overall scores suggest with long rallies during each set."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Avery Jackson (Jul 28) 4-6, 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Played in near perfect early evening conditions at Sproughton lasting over 2.5hrs, this was an exhausting match and a real battle from start to finish. Avery started the match very well conceding just 1 point in winning the opening 2 games. Avery led 3-1 but Daniel managed to draw level at 3-3 and then again at 4-4 before Avery finished the set off as well as he had started taking the next 2. The 2nd set was very close all the way and at 4-5 Daniel had to serve to stay in the match. He held out against the odds taking 8 straight games in the process to lead 5-0 in the decider. Avery mounted a comeback saving match points taking the next 2 games, but Daniel finally gained his 1st victory against Avery on the 5th match point. "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentNick Anthony bt Gary Wolton (Jul 26) 6-3, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Nick and Gary enjoyed a close match at sunny Sproughton. Nick started the sharper, taking an early lead courtesy of some accurate forehands and deft backhand slices. Gary fought back gamely but Nick held on for 6-3. It looked as if a repeat was on in the second as Nick raced into a 4-1 lead but Gary found his form and with a combination of fine serving and killer volleys took 4 games on the bounce. A decider was on the cards but Nick levelled and then broke Gary to love to lead 6-5. Then 40-0 on his serve it should have been all over but Gary had other ideas. Showing brave attacking flair he saved 5 match points only losing out to another horrible backhand slice. Nick was relieved to pinch his first win. Great sporting match."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Daniel Peck (Jul 23) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Score suggest an easy match but infact this was played over an hour and a half in the sweltering heat at CCP. Dan served very well hitting a few aces and made Tyrone play to the best of his ability to get the match done in two sets xxx"  -- Tyrone
Marcus Sheaff bt Matthew Last (Jul 23) 6-3, 6-4
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Nick Anthony (Jul 20) 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Avery and Nick had another tough battle through sun, wind and rain. Avery’s big serve and powerful forehand caused Nick trouble throughout. At 3-3 Avery broke Nick to go on a 3 game run to take the set. The second set went with serve to the tiebreak. Then Nick took a mini break, held serve and broke again twice to lead 6-0. The last two points were shared but the match was levelled. Avery broke back and Nick broke Avery for the first time in the match to level at 2-2. Both players were tiring and making mistakes but Avery’s bigger power game took him to another victory played as usual in a sporting fashion."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Nick Anthony (Jul 13) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great match between two competitive players. First set was close and decided on a few points with Tyrone defending making the difference in the end. Second set was similar and Nick upped his game towards the end of the match saving 4 match points but Tyrone closed out 6-4 :-)"  -- Tyrone

Reveal CommentPatrick Davey bt Josh Goodrum (Aug 12) 6-1, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "It is always a pleasure to play Josh, who is a good friend from Roundwood Tennis Club. We are both students of the game, always looking to improve, and get equally annoyed at our own unforced errors! Thankfully I was able to limit that nonsense in the first set and hit consistently to win it 6-1, although Josh played really well, and a lot more aggressively which was great to see! Second set was interesting, there were some nice rallies, Josh found his backhand range and I really had to pull off some good shots to stay competitive. At 4-3 I got complacent, Josh broke back, and I also couldn't hold at 6-5, equals tiebreak. Fine margins, managed to pull out the W. Thanks Josh for a chill time. Also, thanks to everyone, it's been a lot of fun!"  -- Patrick
Reveal CommentChris Mitchell bt Josh Goodrum (Aug 5) 3-6, 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A good tactical match played in good spirits. Very even first set and the second and third sets were closer than the score suggests. A drop in Josh's serving seemed to be the key difference. Looking forward to the next time round."  -- Chris
Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Simon White (Aug 5) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Nice match to play with twists and turns. Simon opted to receive 1st and quickly went into 2 game lead before I took the next 2, next game seem to be decisive as I took it after many deuces and then went on to take set 6-3. 2nd set was 1 way traffic at the start as Simon took 4-1 lead with some very consistent play and good shots but I dug in to claw back 5 in a row to take the match. Good game and will look forward to playing again. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentPatrick Davey bt Chris Mitchell (Aug 4) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I was excited and nervous about this match. I knew it was crunch time if I wanted to win Group 2 after losing against Howard. So I made a concerted effort to adjust my game and play aggressively wherever possible. The 1st set was a close affair, it was evident that Chris had a strong serve and a lot of power, so I needed to be careful and choose when to attack or defend. I was able to make some precise returns and hit with depth, but there were a lot of close rallies, and I narrowly came out 6-3. The 2nd set was even tighter, I recall the 7th game having about 8 deuces, and after being broken back at 4-3, it really could have gone either way. Really happy to get over the line in 2 against a player like Chris! Thanks for the nice match :) "
Reveal CommentSimon White bt Pradeep Rajakumar (Aug 4) 4-6, 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A pretty titanic clash, reminiscent of my 3 setter with Chris earlier in the tournament. Pradeep and I were very evenly matched the whole way, with only 1 break of serve in the first set, before breaks became the norm across the latter two. I'm sure if we played 100 times, we'd win 50 matches each, so it just happened to be my day. Best of luck for your remaining games, Pradeep!"  -- Simon
Reveal CommentHoward Kendray bt Patrick Davey (Aug 3) 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Another enjoyable and friendly match. First set was closely fought with Howard just getting the break to win 6-3, and then managing to get to 5-2 in the second before Patrick turned up the pressure to romp into a 6-5 lead. Howard managed somehow to get to 6-6 but was totally outplayed in the tie-break. The odds looked in Patrick's favour at this stage but somehow the flow of the game changed once again and Howard managed to win the final set 6-1, after a liberal spraying of Ralgex and a couple of energy tablets."  -- Howard
Reveal CommentChris Mitchell bt Pradeep Rajakumar (Aug 2) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "2 sets didn't do this match justice. A match spent desperately trying to avoid Pradeep’s beast of a forehand involved a lot of running and deep backhand slices. I look forward to the next time round as it was much more competitive than the scoreline suggests with lots of deuces."  -- Chris
Reveal CommentPatrick Davey bt Mark Scott (Aug 1) 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "What an epic tussle this was! My game is in a nice place at the moment, but I was looking forward to playing Mark who I have seen has experience across the Parks League! I dearly wanted to hold on to my unbeaten record of not dropping a set, but it wasn't to be as Mark played brilliantly in the first set, really hustling away to win some good rallies and being all-round consistent made it hard to put him away! I was disappointed not to serve out set 1, but Mark held in there to win the breaker. It was difficult for the next sets to match the quality of the 1st, and I knew that if I was aggressive I could come back into the match, which I thankfully did. However, it was a fantastic match and Mark can be proud of the effort. Well played!"  -- Patrick

Player Comments:

  • "Perfect afternoon at CCP, 1st set was 2-2, and looking like it could be a battle, but I found some consistency and took the next 4games. 2nd set was similar, with the real difference being the shot consistency. Thanks for the match,Josh."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentPatrick Davey bt Simon White (Jul 26) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Myself and Simon know each other from playing together at Roundwood Tennis Club the past 12 months, but we usually play doubles together, so was looking forward to some singles! Especially considering I think our levels are well matched, and that we had both been winners of groups in the past, but in different rounds. Thankfully the heat was not as stifling as previous days, with a soft breeze welcome also! First set was close throughout, though I managed to get a break and hold onto that for dear life! Simon's serve is one of the best in the club and hard to break down, so I was happy to be returning well. 2nd set was a bit one-sided, and I know Simon will be disappointed with the errors, but he will be back with a vengeance! :) "  -- Patrick
Reveal CommentPradeep Rajakumar bt Josh Goodrum (Jul 24) 6-4, 6-3

  • "It was a very competitive match between the two of us. Almost every game went into deuce. The first set started off with each of us breaking the other’s serve and went on till 4-4. I managed to win the last 2 games to bag the first set. Josh started off the second set with some solid serves, both of our games needs more practise to overcome our unforced errors. Overall good tennis was played."  -- Pradeep

  • "On the hottest day of the year so far (a barmy 31 degrees celsius at 6:30pm when we tee'd off) an epic of over 2 and a half hours was contested at Roundwood Tennis Club. Every set was evenly balanced with good quality throughout and a few epic rallies which defied the temperature and led to a battle of attrition towards the end of the final set. A tie-break was the only way this could end with neither player deserving to lose. A cracking match enjoyed by a spectator towards the end in the form of a local coach. A pleasure to play and look forward to the next one, although preferably when a bit cooler!"  -- Chris
Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Josh Goodrum (Jul 23) 6-0, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Turning up at Christchurch to unusually empty courts, maybe we were the only ones mad enough to play in the 29°c heat. I started well in the 1st set and never looked back with Josh struggling to find his game. 2nd set was much closer with Josh taking the 1st 2 games with some great shots, I then managed to take the next 6 games in a row to take the set and match which was closer than score suggests with many deuce games and fortunate net cords on my part. Thanks for the game. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentPatrick Davey bt Pradeep Rajakumar (Jul 21) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "After a few days of interspersed rain, the heat was back! Therefore, I'm happy to get this match done in two sets! However, it was a tough one, I really like Pradeep's game, solid serve and powerful forehand which had me scrambling at times. Fortunately, I got off to a quick lead and that gave me confidence to continue playing aggressively. Otherwise, it was close and we had great rallies, the only difference was probably that I made more winners and less unforced errors. Though Pradeep made some nice angles and pushed me to make my shots better. I understand Pradeep is playing more doubles than singles at the moment, that's the nature of club play, but I'm sure that with practice you will be more consistent in no time! Thanks again. • "Very competitive game in changing weather conditions, Stuart starting the stronger going into 4-1 lead only for Howard to come back to take the set. At this point the heavens opened for a few minutes which halted match momentarily. 2nd set Stuart started strong again but this time held on. Howard picked up a slight injury at start of 3rd but sportingly continued but the lack of movement was eventually the telling factor, good game thanks. "  -- Stuart

Player Comments:

  • "A day after another epic encounter between Federer and Nadal after their last Wimbledon battle 11 years prior, two well-worn parks league players renewed their own less important rivalry. I played Stuart first about a year ago in this league and since we have continued playing, but in different groups as Stuart moved up. I'm really happy with how I played in the first set, Stuart admittedly made more unforced errors and I was able to get my shots where I was intending- which helps! 2nd set was more competitive, Stuart playing more consistently, especially on the serve. I had to really find some angles and hit some winners to ensure I wasn't broken. I broke at 6-5 due to a let cord, sorry about that! Fine margins, thanks Stuart for the game!"  -- Patrick

Ben was the better player in the 1st set quickly racing to a 3-1 lead with a combination of strong serves, solid groundstrokes and very skilled drop shots being particularly effective. I had to work hard to catch up and with a bit of luck won the 1st set 7-5. I was leading 4-0 in the 2nd set before Ben won 3 games in a row but I just managed to be slightly more consistent to win the set 6-3. • "A good matchup on a glorious morning. Both players were quick out of the gate with tough points, long rallies, and hard hits from both sides. Serves were held and lost intermittently in this first set, with Pip taking and holding the lead at 3-2 to take the set. Jamie sped out of the blocks in the second, quickly claiming the first four games. Although the play was just as good as the first set, Pip's game had gone off the boil, lacking the aggression of the first and making more errors. In the third set, momentum swung back Pip's way, where consistency and aggression returned rewarded by a 5-0 lead. Jamie easily gained the 6th game to avoid the doughnut (or being grannied), but Pip finished the match decisively with 2 aces. Thanks, Jamie!"  -- Philippa

Player Comments:

  • "An excellent match in the drizzle and gloom. The first set started off serve as both players got to grips with the slippy conditions. Paul took the lead and was serving for the match, but Pip broke back to bring the score level at 5-5. Paul broke serve again and held his own to claim the set. Both players had warmed up by the second set meaning longer rallies and great shots a-plenty. Play was again back and forth between winning and losing service games, with breaks being soon broken back. Pip came up trumps with a double fault from Paul at 4-5 to level the score. Third set: Pip went ahead at 3-1, only for Paul to fight back to 3-3. Pip then held, broke, and served the set out to claim the match. Hard fought match in slippy conditions!"  -- Philippa

Player Comments:

  • "Both Ben and I thoroughly enjoyed playing each other. There were quite a few deuce games, lots of long rallies and heaps of running around. I can safely say that we both were thoroughly knackered by the end of the game. It could have easily been either of our games, unfortunately one of us had to lose. Good luck and thank you Ben."  -- Anup
Reveal CommentPhilippa Cowie bt Josh Francis (Jul 18) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Both players took a little while to warm up as the first three games went against serve. Pip was denied the set when serving at 5-2 to eventually hold to claim it at the second asking. Josh came out strong in the second set claiming the first 3 games. Pip fought back to go 4-3 up then things stayed with serve until Pip managed to break and then hold at 5-5 to win the match. Great consistency in serve and shots from Josh with some long baseline to baseline exchanges."  -- Philippa

Player Comments:

  • "A better match than the scoreline suggests. First blood to Ben, breaking my serve game 1 but a lot of deuces on his serve went my way. Good mix of shots and spins with some cracking lobs and drop shots. Second set went my way, still with plenty of deuces, until Ben broke back when I was serving for the match at 5-0. Final rally at match point was tense, with a passing shot down the line having been successfully lobbed. Thanks Ben, and keep up the good work!"  -- Philippa

Player Comments:

  • "Following a short wait for a court to become available, play began with Ashley creeping into a 3-0 first set lead, before Claire pulled it back to 3-2 with some good passing shots. Claire then stayed in touch for the next couple of games, but from 4-3, Ashley managed to close the set out. The second set followed a similar pattern to 2-2, before Ashley again managed to pull away and close out the set & match. A cracking evening for tennis with the sun already below the treeline and virtually no breeze."  -- Ashley

Reveal CommentAshley Miller bt Justin Morey (Jul 15) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A decent, cloudy morning for tennis, albeit warm but with no bright sunshine to worry about. These 2 players had met twice in previous rounds of the league, but this match involved a lot more deuce points than the previous encounters. In the 1st set, Ashley started with a break of serve, before both players then held serve, prior to Ashley drawing away from 2-1 onwards. The 2nd set followed a similar pattern, with Ashley holding serve twice and breaking to lead 3-0, before Justin got on the board. The score doesn't fully reflect some of the tennis Justin played, with several good, passing service returns and well-judged lob shots. An enjoyable, well-contested encounter."  -- Ashley
