Revision information
Provide an explanation of the changes you are making. This will help other authors understand your motivations.

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Getting started

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

For everything you need to know before you get started see the FAQs and review the Rules and Regulations, which all players agree to adhere to when playing in the leagues.

If there is anything else you need help with get in contact with Nigel, Sally and the team who will be happy to help!

"I've had some excellent matches, learnt a few things about myself in relation to match play, met some nice people and made some new tennis buddies which I think is the whole idea of the League - so thank you for that.  I shall look forward to playing in the League again in January!",

Helen Challis

"I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this round of matches and playing each of you in the group. We should also congratulate ourselves as a group, as we managed to play ALL our matches, with everything wrapped up by 1st June with 10 days to spare! I reckon that's pretty impressive with everybody leading ever-busier lives and the amount of inclement weather along the way :)  Hopefully see some or all of you in the next round :)"

Ashley Miller

"I definitely improved over the course of the round,"

Dan Davies

"I really enjoyed playing in the tennis league. It ensures you play tennis regularly and meet new people" -- Ankur Singhania

"Thank you for the congrats. Group winning tastes like the best lager!  Thank you Sally and Nigel for being good organisers. Good job.  I plan to rejoin our leaque in September,"

Waldemar Kapkowski

"Thank you very much for the organisation of the tennis leagues. I have taken part in the Ipswich Christchurch Park league for the first time this round after a long time off from playing tennis. I think this is a great way of getting to play regularly and meet new people to play. I have had great, enjoyable matches with some very friendly people. My league matches may be finished for this round but have already arranged a couple of extra games within my group of players and will definitely be entering the next round. Once again thank you for the leagues as without dedicated people like yourself this would not be possible. Very happy player," Stuart Horrex

Reveal CommentNick Anthony bt Mark Scott (Apr 10) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nick and Mark had an enjoyable game on a sunny morning in the park. Nick started the stronger, troubling Mark with consistent serves and cross court forehands. Mark despatched some good volleys but was unable to make an impact in the set, with Nick winning it 6-0. Mark started stronger in the next set and had game points in three of the first six games. He successfully held a serve to 15 but then missed some chances to convert other games, and Nick concluded the set and the match 6-1. Mark was unfortunate to meet Nick on good form but fought gamely throughout. "  -- Nick
Reveal CommentJoshua Crossley bt Waldemar Kapkowski (Apr 9) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A fun match played by two good competitors who are familiar with each other Hot conditions along with slight rustiness contributed to a close start to the set with both players struggling to gain momentum however as josh found his game he managed to produce enough quality to take the set Second set was also competitive with some good solid tennis played by both players despite niether really finding their best level Josh's quality eventually prevaled however well played to waldemar for being a good competitor and giving it his all on every point He is a top player and an alround top bloke Thanks wlademar :) "  -- Joshua
Reveal CommentCharles Fulcher bt Waldemar Kapkowski (Apr 2) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A lovely sunny day in the park, with a good match to suit, after a fairly easy first set where Charlie played well, Waldermar came into his own, hitting lots of outright back hand winners which contributed to a tight second set"  -- Charles
Reveal CommentCharles Fulcher bt Nick Anthony (Mar 28) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Charlie's extra class proved pivotal in a well contested match. Four of the first five games went to deuce but each time Charlie won through. Nick broke Charlie once but the set ran away from him. Nick started stronger in the second with heavy forehand and backhand slices troubling Charlie. But Nick squandered good chances to lead 2-1 and 3-2 which proved fatal against a player of Charlie's quality. Charlie regularly anticipated Nick's attempts to pass and produced an array of winners accurately despatched. He served out the match at 5-3 and once again proved himself favourite to win the Group. Player Comments:

  • "A fun match with lots of competitive rallies Josh was strong out the blocks defending well and neutralising any aggression from Dan transferring momentum and counter punching With controlled aggression josh managed to wrap up a strong first set In the second set josh became a bit too passive at times and Dan played some strong competitive points however josh managed to maintain his lead and finish the match strongly Well played Dan good luck in the rest of your matches :) "  -- Joshua
Reveal CommentNick Anthony bt Waldemar Kapkowski (Mar 18) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nick bounced back from yesterday's defeat with a decisive straight sets win over Waldemar. At 1-1 Nick stepped up his play to win 7 successive games. Waldemar was struggling to cope with Nick's heavier serve and ground shots. Walden rallied at 2-0 down in the second set to hold his serve. However his usual consistency had deserted him and Nick did not concede another game. For Waldemar it was just a bad day at the office. Nick played nearly as well as Josh instead of playing like Josh's grandad the day before!"  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "Marcus was unlucky not to finish the match as the winner for the third time in this round. The three hour match started with a wintery chill in the air, then pleasant spring sunshine became blazing summer strength sunshine, finishing with autumnal grey skies and light rain. Each of us played the better tennis in spurts of two or three games, with constant breaks of serve and each set was decided by who had a said spurt at the business end of the set. Luck wasn't with Marcus, countless passing shots of his down the line going an inch wide but luck was certainly with Howard, three drop shots hitting the net cord and somehow trickled down the net onto Marcus's side of the court, leaving Marcus struggling to believe his eyes. Reveal CommentSarah Quinlan bt Marcus Sheaff (Apr 8) 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "A great contest played between two very evenly matched players. Marcus started the stronger winning the first two games, only to lose the next two. Marcus edged ahead and stayed there to secure the set. Marcus, feeling confident and playing well in the second, staying ahead up until 5-4. Marcus made the fatal error of thinking that he almost had the match wrapped up, which lead to him playing too complacently, which Sarah took full advantage of and made it one set all. After an ubrupt change of court, the two players resumed battle in the decider. It was the closest of the three sets, nip and tuck the whole way to a tiebreak to decide the match. Marcus was running on fumes by this point where as Sarah seemed to get stronger and held out. "  -- Marcus

Thanks Michal for the game."  -- Stuart

Reveal CommentMarcus Sheaff bt Alec Main (Mar 18) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The opening game set the tone for the rest of the match with both players timing and striking the ball sweetly which lead to lengthy and entertaining rallies with a good variety of shots. Marcus broke Alec after a couple of deuces and went on to claim the first set. Marcus took a two game lead in set two then had to fight hard when serving to win a marathon game with six deuces that felt decisive for the outcome of the match. Having used a lot of energy Marcus's level dipped and Alec raised his to draw level at 3-3. At 4-4 with incoming rain and the finish line in sight Marcus put his foot on the gas to break Alec then hold serve to round of this highly enjoyable and sociable encounter. "  -- Marcus

Thank you Sarah for a great game."  -- Stuart

Player Comments:

  • "Marcus was caught cold by siva after not playing for almost 3 weeks. Siva was 4-1 up before Marcus got anything going and despite pegging siva back to 4-4 it was a case of starting too late and siva took the set. With his confidence growing and the rust coming off Marcus raised his level and took the second set. The decider was more of a battle of attrition than tennis and with both players tiring, siva just managed to outlast Marcus with the added help of his supporters on court. Siva played the marginally better tennis on the day but Marcus would very much like a rematch sometime in the future in more fair conditions for both players and with both players following the rules and etiquette of the league. • "Another early (08:00) start to bag a court on an overcast morning and an edgy start with both players loosing their opening service games. Plenty of subsequent games went to deuce, some of them up to half a dozen times, but Ashley eventually led 5-1. Hilary then fought back to 3-5, before Ashley finally managed to close out the set, aided somewhat by the sun bursting though the clouds (although much higher now than back in December!) just after a change of ends, which made things slightly more awkward for Hilary as she tried to keep the set in play. The second set saw Ashley take a 5-0 lead before eventually winning it 6-1 and was nowhere near a fair reflection of the match overall. A very good match on Good Friday!"  -- Ashley

All 3 sets were extremely close with both players consistent, hard working and resilient throughout. We both did a lot of running and I had to work hard to try to retrieve Hilary's excellent cross court angled shots, many times colliding with the fence in the process! Great match which could easily have gone either way in the 3rd set. Thanks Hilary"  -- Jamie

  • "It was a fabulous, warm sunny morning, not a cloud in the sky! Ideal for tennis. Paul started well with an effective chip shot on his backhand, winning several points. Hilary could not get it together and went down 6-2 in the first set. In the second set, Hilary started strongly but Paul came back with some great angle shots and ace serves. It was neck and neck with a number of deuces but Hilary managed to take the second set to level the match. In the third set, Hilary took the first game but Paul came back with some ace serves but Hilary was running well, able to pick up the short shots now. There were some great rallies and the set score does not really reflect the match. Hilary managed to win 2-1 but it was a great match!"  -- Hilary

Player Comments:

  • "The players started early at 8am to ensure a court on the warmest day of the year so far and the first 2 games went with serve, although the second of those took at least 6 deuce points to decide! Ashley eventually carved out a 5-2 lead after some very even games, but Vanessa wasn't done with yet, pulling it back to 5-4 before Ashley managed to close out the set. The second set followed a similar pattern, but with some solid lobs and drop-shots from Vanessa to keep Ashley on his toes. A good, enjoyable match with some lengthy rallies from the baseline and at the net."  -- Ashley

  • "Perfect conditions at CCP for tennis today; dry court, no wind and the sun was shining. Mike standard strongly in the first set with some very good serves and solid groundstrokes. There were loads of nice points played out with a good variety of shots including baseline rallies, drop shots and lobs. Very enjoyable and we played an extra set after the match too. Vital statistics from the fitness tracker showed 6k was travelled in 90 minutes , most of it chasing back to try and retrieve Mike's lobs!"  -- Jamie

Player Comments:

  • "This was the 4th or 5th time I've played Ashley and we always seem to have long, close matches. It was therefore no surprise that this match continued the trend. We started early at 8am (which obviously felt like 7am with the hour going forward overnight) but we were soon getting into the traditional long rallies and tight games. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology I was able to check my phone after the match and see the match had lasted 2 hours and 8k had been covered. Heart rate was going up and down dramatically reflecting the constant stop/start which makes tennis such a good workout. The deciding set was rather cagey with both players playing defensively but overall it was a good match which could easily have gone the other way"  -- Jamie

Player Comments:

  • "A sunny, spring morning and the park was very busy with the morning Park Run and all 5 courts in use when the players first arrived. Apparently 3 courts were in use at 8am this morning, so, if you're playing at weekends, get there early to secure a court! A fairly uneventful match, played in good spirits, with some delightful lobs from Alex whenever Ashley ventured to the net and several service returns straight down the line from Ashley."  -- Ashley
