Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also posted to the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"Thank you very much for the organisation of the tennis leagues. I have taken part in the Ipswich Christchurch Park league for the first time this round after a long time off from playing tennis. I think this is a great way of getting to play regularly and meet new people to play. I have had great, enjoyable matches with some very friendly people. My league matches may be finished for this round but have already arranged a couple of extra games within my group of players and will definitely be entering the next round. Once again thank you for the leagues as without dedicated people like yourself this would not be possible. Very happy player," Stuart Horrex

Stuart Horrex

"I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this round of matches and playing each of you in the group. We should also congratulate ourselves as a group, as we managed to play ALL our matches, with everything wrapped up by 1st June with 10 days to spare! I reckon that's pretty impressive with everybody leading ever-busier lives and the amount of inclement weather along the way :)  Hopefully see some or all of you in the next round :)"

Ashley Miller

"I've had some excellent matches, learnt a few things about myself in relation to match play, met some nice people and made some new tennis buddies which I think is the whole idea of the League - so thank you for that.  I shall look forward to playing in the League again in January!",

Helen Challis

"I'd like to say again how much I enjoyed playing in the league. I met interesting people, and have played some good matches,"

Peter Valasek

"Big congratulations on an excellent league set up, the reports posted on the Internet and match reports, married alongside your very good e-mail updates enhance the league no end, and adds considerably to the overall enjoyment factor of the games,"

Rob Fratel

"I definitely improved over the course of the round,"

Another great round in Ipswich with over 70% of the matches played - what a Christmas present to the league! Now, just time for a short break to enjoy the festivities but see you early in January for the start of the tennis New Year! Enjoy the break!

Group Summary:

Matthew has played in a fair number of rounds so he will be pleased (at "last") to have notched up a group win! As expected, Avery made it as tough as he could (and came away with the silver) while Marcus actually beat the champ in what looks like a very exciting three-setter. Well done all.

Reveal CommentNick Anthony bt Avery Jackson (Nov 16) 6-3, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Nick gained a long awaited victory over Avery in difficult court conditions. The low bounce caused Avery problems from the off but Nick capitalised with his trademark backhand slice. After breaking Avery early on Nick served consistently to take the first set 6-3. Avery started the second on serve and both players though under pressure at times were holding serve right through the set. A tie break seemed inevitable and so it proved. At 2-1 up with Avery serving Nick managed to take two mini breaks as Avery unluckily overhit his big forehands. Points were then shared until Nick maintained a two point lead to earn match points. Serving at 6-4 Nick retrieved Avery’s forehand with a looping shot that caught the line to end the match 7-6"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Avery Jackson (Oct 27) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Fun match played at CCP. Tyrone started well and took advantage of Avery hitting three double faults in a row . Tyrone covered the caught well and was very consistent . Avery hit some trademark forehand winners in the second set . "  -- Tyrone
Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Nick Anthony (Oct 26) 2-6, 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Nick and Xin had another 3 setter spread over two days due to a break for rain. Nick started the sharper and soon took a 4-1 lead. Xin started to find a bit of form but could not prevent Nick taking the set. After that it was a different story. Xin hit his best form and hit consistent winners to leave Nick on the back foot. Despite a lot of games going to deuce Nick was wasteful with break point chances and Xin soon tasted a 2-1 victory. A good sporting match played in all varieties of Autumn weather."  -- Nick
Reveal CommentNick Anthony bt Marcus Sheaff (Oct 25) 6-1, 0-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Nick and Marcus endured drizzly conditions to produce another close match. Nick started sharper, using his slice well in damp conditions and soon raced to a 5-0 lead. Marcus gamely saved 4 set points to hold serve but Nick took the next game and the set. Marcus turned the tables in the second set, using his full range of shots to batter Nick to a bagel and level the match. Nick was stung and started the third set the stronger, taking a 3-1 lead only for Marcus to win 3 on the trot and lead 4-3. Then love game to Nick and a break and the end was tantalisingly in sight. Predictably Marcus did not give up. But at 40-30 Marcus just failed to clear his shot over the net and the match was won. A good sporting match. "  -- Nick
Reveal CommentTyrone Bradnam bt Xin Chen (Oct 20) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Great match played at Christchurch Park in sunny conditions. Tyrone started well taking the first five points hitting three consecutive winners. Xin thought back and kept it close in the early stages of both sets but the King stepped up a few gears and closed the game out. :-) :-) No squirrels interrupting this one! "  -- Tyrone
Reveal CommentMatthew Last bt Avery Jackson (Oct 20) 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Massively enjoyable match of tennis played in a great spirit throughout. Was Avery who broke out the blocks the quickest and sprinted away to a 4v1 lead thanks mostly to his powerful serving and thunderous crosscourt forehands with ridiculously good angles. Luckily I managed to shift the balance of play and started to dictate the rallies in an attempt to give Avery no wide shots on his forehand. This enabled me to crawl back into the game and eventually take the set in a scoreline all to familiar to recent matches with Avery, with it finishing as our trademark scoreline of 7v5. With the weather looking like the heavens where about to open we very quickly got on with the 2nd set where I raced to a 4v1 lead before holding on to win 6v2."  -- Matthew
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Marcus Sheaff (Oct 19) 6-2, 2-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another gruelling and enjoyable encounter. The first set was dominated by big serves and returns by both players. The second was more of the same with Marcus coming out in top. The third set was halted midway after a few squirrels staged a standoff on Marcus side of the court demanding some of the the nuts he had been munching throughout the match. Quite uncanny scene with these squirrels following him around before we manage to get them off the court. That must have been the sign because Avery managed to steady the ship and take the match which was played in good spirits throughout despite the encounter with the squirrels."  -- Avery
Matthew Last bt Nick Anthony (Oct 18) 6-1, 6-1

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentMatthew Last bt Xin Chen (Oct 13) 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Drizzly conditions fail to dampen four hour epic!!! Think this game probably broke us both by the end however in some tormented way I'm sure we both massively enjoyed it despite the long gruelling rallies and constant dueces. Hats off to Xin as played superbly in the first two sets with only a handful of errors. Xin raced to an early first set lead before I pegged him back slightly however he held firm. Second set sure a series of dueces resulting in Xin going 5v4 up. Unfortunately he didn't quite manage to take any of his 3 or 4 match point chances enabling me to draw level with one set a piece. Final set saw me race away to an early 4v0 lead only for Xin to again show brilliant battling spirit forcing me to earn a very hard fought victory"  -- Matthew
Marcus Sheaff bt Matthew Last (Oct 7) 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Xin Chen (Oct 5) 7-6 (7-4), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A great start for both players. Xin and I know each other games very well after our practice matches. Xin started well and was unlucky not to close out the first where he led 5-2. The second was a ding dong battle with Avery managing to clinch the set."  -- Avery

Group Summary:

A fantastic group with all but two of the possible matches accounted for and not surprisingly that led to a tight finish! Stuart was the player who refused to put a foot wrong and carried the group with a brilliant eight-match winning streak. That left Garry to pick up the silver. Great tennis all.

Player Comments:

  • "We played in cold but dry conditions in the park which wasn’t too bad given we’re in November. I started the steadier, taking a 3/0 before Paul hit back with the fourth game with some great backhands. . There then ensued three close games featuring a number of deuces which I grabbed to take the set. With the first set in the bag I was able to keep myself ahead in set 2 and grab all 6 games albeit we had a number of good rallies. An enjoyable match played in friendly and sporting manner, thanks for the game Paul and look forward to the next one. "  -- Gary

Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Elliot Bliss (Nov 16) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was a much tougher game than Scoreline suggests with many deuce games and great rallies throughout mainly due to both players keen to keep getting the ball back in play. 1st set was full of deuce games with Stuart taking the important points which was the difference. 2nd took a similar path until the all important 7th game where after another massive deuce tussle Stuart edged the game which ultimately set up the set and match. Elliot has a great game and with bit more consistency could have been a different outcome, great game, thanks. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentPradeep Rajakumar bt Jon Ling (Nov 15) 6-1, 7-6 (10-8)

Player Comments:

  • "Great match. Very close games. Jon had a strong forehand and hit some solid winners. The second set could have gone either way. We were fighting hard for every point. I was lucky to have gotten the last 2 points to bag the set. Great start for the day and a good end to league number 33. "  -- Pradeep
Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Paul Ridley (Nov 15) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Played on a damp court with at times what seem to be a night match when the clouds came over. 1st set Paul raced into a 4-1 lead with some good consistent shots, Stuart upped his game to come back and win 8 games in a row which turned the match on its head, Paul pulled 1 back before Stuart then went into 5-1 lead, Paul really dug in on the next game and after about 10 deuces got 1 back, Stuart took next game and match. Great game with some very good rallies throughout, thanks. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentPradeep Rajakumar bt Elliot Bliss (Nov 13) 6-3, 2-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A very chilly morning. We were the only ones at the park courts. It was a slow start and we were both on equal scores till about 3 all. I managed a lead to bag the first. Elliot came back very strong in the 2nd set with strong forehand placements and good serves. I was all over the place on this one. But his unforced errors crept in on the 3rd set which enabled me to get some quick sets early on. Overall it was a good game and an excellent way to start the day."  -- Pradeep
Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Elliot Bliss (Nov 13) 6-2, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Played on a bright if damp day at Christchurch which meant the balls were a little heavy. Elliot took the first game before I steadied up to grab a 3/1 lead. The next few games were tight with most going to deuce but I was a bit more consistent on serve and clinched the first set. The same pattern was repeated in the early stages of set 2, however at 1-3 down Elliot really found his form and range, rattling off 3 consecutive games with great shots off both wings. I stopped the rot to make it 4/4 only to see Elliot take the lead again. I played probably my best service game to level at 5/5, sneaked a break and just held my serve to take what was a very enjoyable and competitive set. Well played Elliot, great match. "  -- Gary
Reveal CommentPhilippa Cowie bt Paul Ridley (Nov 11) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Risked the forecasted showers and were even rewarded with some sunshine! Game very much similar to the last time we met in the previous round. Long rallies with excellent ball chasing by both players. Pip started strong in set 1, breaking Paul's serve game 1 and at 3-5 to claim the set. Second set was tit for tat, punctuated by exciting events off the court: a passing school group, booming fireworks (I only now realise were to mark the Remembrance Day silence start and end), and a helicopter flying overhead. On court, service games became more competitive as the set came down to the wire. Initial breaks were immediately broken back, and many more games went to repeated deuces. Pip managed to secure a crucial break at 4-5 to close the match."  -- Philippa
Reveal CommentPradeep Rajakumar bt Mark Scott (Nov 10) 6-2, 2-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A bright day and dry weather, perfect conditions for tennis. Very equally matched players. I had the edge with a strong forehand. Mark came back very strong on the 2nd set. The 3rd set started off quite well with both of us breaking games. But I got ahead with a few good shots. All in all great tennis!"  -- Pradeep
Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Jon Ling (Nov 10) 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "We played on a fine and bright afternoon at Sproughton. The first set saw me take an early lead and at 3/0 I was able to play a bit more freely and take more chances to take it. All the fun was in the second set where we were both playing some good tennis and were both very consistent. I was serving first but both of us held serve consistently and neither of us had many chances to break. In the tie break Jon was on top hitting some great forehand winners and drop shots to take it. I managed to secure an early break in set 3 and kept my nose in front to sneak ahead. At 5/2 I was at 15/40 but dug in and grabbed the win on the third match point. Well Played Jon, look forward to the next one. "  -- Gary

Paul challenged me well with his backhand and his slice shots, and staged a late comeback in the second set, but I managed to pull through and see the match off. Well played, Paul, and best of luck with the rest of your matches!"  -- Elliot
Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Waldemar Kapkowski (Nov 9) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Another slightly damp court which is often the case this time of year. Stuart started the best taking 1st 2 games before Waldemar leveled up, from then on it was nip and tuck with both players playing some nice shots but Waldemar making unforced errors which helped Stuart out with the set. 2nd set Stuart's game was working well especially his serve with a few aces thrown in too, Waldemar continued to make more mistakes which ultimately was his undoing with Stuart taking the set and match. Good game and look forward to playing again, thanks. "  -- Stuart

  • "Having put the match back by a couple of hours to let the rain stop we were greeted with a slippery, damp but playable court. Was a nice match to play and look forward to our next encounter, thanks. "  -- Stuart

We had some really good rallies and quite a few deuce points. I was able to get my points through some strong shots, but Paul was very quick around the court getting back most of them. A stronger first serve would really help both our games. Great tennis all around and an great way to start the day."  -- Pradeep

Player Comments:

  • "Risked playing after very threatening grey clouds all day. The balls were very heavy with the moisture in the air and the lines were skiddy for balls and players alike. Sets 1 and 2 were near mirror-images of each other with various breaks on both serves and one player holding their own to make the difference in the end. Played postponed due to fading light and a rain shower starting early into the third set. 2-0 on Jon's serve when this match continues..."  -- Philippa

Elliott raced away to a 3-0 lead in set2, but I got back on track and reeled off 6 in a row. My trademark consistency winning through! Thanks for the game Elliott. May see you next year, after your travels."  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "On a rare dry afternoon, with the court pretty much fine, we got our match started. A close tussle, as always , I managed to edge the crucial points and take the first set. Jon approached the net more in set2, so I threw some lobs in , and unusually for me, some double handed backhand passing shots. I think it's because of my tennis elbow, that I'm playing more double handed on the backhand. Anyway, it seemed to work, and I closed out the set. Always good to play Jon. Hope to play you more next year."  -- Mark
Reveal CommentGary Wolton bt Pradeep Rajakumar (Oct 22) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We played at 8am, and once the low sun was obscured by cloud we had pretty much perfect conditions for the time of year. Pradeep started the better taking his first service game with ease. I replied with mine and there ensued some great play with Pradeep hitting tremendous forehand winners, letting me off the hook on several points with a few missed shots. After taking the close first set I served to make it 1-0. The second game was pivotal and I grabbed it after at least 6 deuces. With a bit of a lead i managed to stretch Pradeep and came out on top although the score line belies the quality of the tennis in set 2. Well played Pradeep, looking forward to the next one!"  -- Gary

Pradeep never really recovered and although Stuart's game improved a little it was Praddeeps unforced errors that made the difference. Good to play the game but both players will be disappointed in the way they played. Thanks for the game. "  -- Stuart

Gary scraped a tense 1st set with nothing really between them. Sets 2&3 were much the same but Stuart seemed to get the important points when it mattered to take them both but in all fairness most games could have gone either way. Pip managed to reduce her unforced errors in the first set to give Gary a much better game in the 2nd and 3rd sets. Both sets started with breaks of serve on both sides for the first few games. Gary saved a few match points in the third set to take it to a tiebreak, but unfortunately, play had to be stopped to allow Pip to go to work (not that she wanted to leave the match hanging on this tenterhook)!"  -- Philippa
  • "We resumed on 9/10 for the tie break, I served first and double faulted! We had many great rallies and I managed to sneak the tie break and with it the match. A thoroughly enjoyable match played in great spirits, well played Pip I look forward to the next one!," -- Gary

The last couple games turned my way after some very good deuce games. We started the 2nd set after a small break due to court shifting where I managed to get an initial lead, but Pip managed to pull it back with a couple of solid games. After a bit of scare I managed to take the set. Pip has some great serves & excellent shots, a bit more improvement on unforced errors & placement could really make the difference. -Pradeep "  -- Pradeep

Very enjoyable match and look forward to playing again, thanks. "  -- Stuart

Mark started the stronger, adapting better to the conditions and taking a 3/1 lead with some good attacking play. I grabbed the next two to get to 3/3 before mark got the next. At 4/4 I managed to find a couple of winners to take the next 2 games and the set. The early exchanges in set 2 were very close and well contested. I crept to a 4/2 lead and had 40/0 on my serve but Mark wasn’t having it and broke me to get to make it4/3. I ground in to sneak the next two games and the set. • "Gorgeous blue skies and cool breeze made for a great morning for tennis. The match became a battle of the forehands and unforced errors. Much better rallies in the second set with lots of great runs on both ends to retrieve the ball. Plenty of winners for Elliot contrasted with a couple of aces for Pip. Overall a very enjoyable game with both sets following the same trend in terms of breaks and holds."  -- Philippa
Reveal CommentStuart Horrex bt Mark Scott (Sep 30) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Always a pleasure to play Mark and as expected this was a close encounter. 1st set we traded games with some breaks of serves and great rallies that would have looked good on camera. 2nd set Marks game rocketed up to another level and before I knew it he was 5-0 up, I dug in to get a couple back but ultimately the damage was done. 3rd set was a real tussle similar to the 1st from start to finish and could of gone either way but I managed to get over the line to take the match. As usual it was a great match with Mark and I look forward to our next encounter. "  -- Stuart
Reveal CommentMark Scott bt Philippa Cowie (Sep 27) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "We played in the morning, as showers looked likely in the afternoon.First time I've played Phillipa, always good to meet new players. We started with a game of 10 dueces!..Phillipa's a consistent player, and our rallies were often long. I managed to make less errors though, and eventually got the breaks in both sets. "  -- Mark

Group Summary:

Three players ended up with four wins but no one could keep a completely clean sheet. That meant bonus points became really important in this brilliantly competitive group. It certainly disadvantaged Peter who didn't manage to grab his, though Peter had also been beaten by eventual runner-up David. In the end, Zelma edged ahead of David in the race thanks to picking up a crucial point for the set she took off Peter. A nail-biting finish to an excellent round.

Player Comments:

  • "This was some battle. Jamie raced into a 3-0 lead in the first, before I levelled at 3-3. Jamie then won 3 out of the next 4 games to take the set. The second set swung my way and I was able to level the match. The final set was an intense affair. Both players playing some great tennis, some unforced errors and some luck on both sides. The tie break saw Jamie take a 4-0 lead, before being pegged back. At 5-6 in the tie break with me leading, Jamie decided the time was right to play a net cord shot to save match point and carry on our battle! Finally, after a real struggle in a match with a bit of everything, I was able to clinch the tie break and the match. Fantastic match. Well played Jamie."  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "A good afternoon of tennis played in very good spirits. Peter showed good fighting spirit in the second set having gone down 5-0, managing to bring it back to 5-2. The threat of a great comeback was on! Then on Peter's serve, we played a game of many deuces (which seems to be a theme for me!) In which I eventually took the match. Thank you Peter."  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "A rain interrupted match over 2 days. We took a chance on the weather, which ultimately beat us with Bill leading the first set 5-2 before the rain came. We resumed the following day and Bill clinched the first set. I managed to take the second, before pivotal moments in the third. With Bill serving 2-1 with a break, we played a ding ding game of countless deuces before I eventually managed to break back and claim the next 4 games to win the match. Great match, great entertainment. Thank you Bill. David."  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "Some close games and hard fought points on a warm November afternoon at Christchurch Park. Mark said he was getting back into tennis after a gap and, as his consistency improves, his results will follow. Good luck in the rest of your games and hope to meet you in a future round. "  -- Zelma
Peter Haystead bt Paul Flanagan (Oct 31) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4
Reveal CommentZelma Green bt Bill Garside (Oct 30) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Bill and I figured out we last played each other four years ago in the CCP league! Bill got off to a flying (and worrying) head start in the first. At 4-1 I needed to wake up and did and fortunately took the first set after winning the next five games in a row. In the second it was three five and Bill was 40 love up on serve looking to pull one back but I snuck up to take the game and second set. Some tough low sun at one end of the court and ups and downs from both players. An enjoyable match Thank you Bill. Hope to meet you in a future round and not in four years time!"  -- Zelma

Reveal CommentZelma Green bt Jamie Cussans (Oct 23) 6-4, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Jamie and I always seem to have great matches and today was no exception. The first set saw long rallies and fiercely contested points and I was glad to clinch it. Jamie said after that my play in the second set was, faultless. That may well have been rather kind but there were an unusual lack of errors on my part. This let me go for it more and Jamie was often one point behind but unable to sneak any games. Another awesome meet Jamie thank you."  -- Zelma
Reveal CommentZelma Green bt David Sendall (Oct 20) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "David said he had had a long gap from tennis which wasn't very reassuring when he took the first game. His errors reduced and shots improved in the second set nearly pulling the match to a third set which I was glad not to have to play! Thanks for the game David. Hope to meet again in a future round. Z"  -- Zelma
Reveal CommentPaul Flanagan bt Bill Garside (Oct 10) 7-6 (7-5), 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "A really close first set unfortunately littered with errors from both players, with each admitting a bad day at the office. Paul managed to go 5-2 ahead only for bill to show great tenacity to win 4 games on the bounce to take it to 6-5, Paul managed to hold his serve to take it to tie break, Paul again raced into The lead, 5-1 only for bill to come back, eventually Paul got the two points needed. In the 2nd set Paul found a little rhythm and consistency but the score doesn’t reflect what was still many close games."  -- Paul
David Sendall bt Mark Walker (Oct 5) 6-1, 6-2
Reveal CommentPaul Flanagan bt David Sendall (Oct 2) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really good battle under the lights where the score doesn’t reflect how close the match really was. After the first finished 6-2 the 2nd was a very even affair with neither player holding serve, at 4-3 Paul managed to hold making the vital difference. I suspect if this game had started in the 2nd set the winner may well have been different."  -- Paul
Reveal CommentJamie Cussans bt Bill Garside (Sep 30) 6-4, 6-4
