Collapse AllChristchurch Park, Ipswich Singles - Round 31 | Thursday 25 April 2019 to Wednesday 19 June 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 22 May 2019)

A really classic early summer round where you all knuckled down and played an enormous amount of excellent tennis. Over 85% of the matches were played and that is all down to your commitment and friendly, competitive spirit. Thanks so much for your support, well done to the winners and see you all again next round we hope!

Group Summary:

It's been almost two years since Tyrone topped group one but he was back with a vengeance this round with the group decided right at the end by the head-to-head between him and Charles. The match, finally settled with a Championship tiebreak, didn't disappoint. Now Charles may not agree that "the crown is back where it belongs" but everyone is sure to concur that this was one of Ipswich's most exciting top groups. And we extend that thought to third-placed Avery, himself no stranger to the top spot. Fantastic tennis from the entire group - everyone won at least one match and seven players earned their bonus points. Great commentaries complete this excellent display of league tennis.

  • "Deciding match played in nice conditions at Felixstowe Tennis Club. Tyrone had not played on grass in nearly twenty years but settled in well taking a 4-2 lead. Charlie stepped up and started playing the court well making it hard for Tyrone to keep up. Charlie took control of the tie break. Charlie broke serve first game of the second set and looked on course to take the title but Tyrone was determined not to loose and battled to a 6-4 second set. With both players very tired from the exhausting rallies we decided on a final set tie break with Tyrone took 10-4. The crown is back where it belongs. I look forward to seeing you come for my crown in the next tournament :-) Ty"  -- Tyrone

  • "Very competitive match played at a windy Sproughton Tennis Club. Marcus started well and adapted to the conditions quicker than Ty taking a 5-2 lead. Ty settled down and raced back to a 6-5 lead but Marcus won the next game and took the tie break 7-5 with some good baseline shots. The second set was very similar to the first with both players struggling with the wind. Ty began to be more consistent and took the set 6-4. In the decider Marcus took a 1-0 lead before an unfortunate event. The locals in the park kicked a football into the tennis courts. Ty tried to be clever, kicked the ball back but unfortunately caught an unaware Marcus on the side of the chin. Marcus took this very well and raced to a 3-0 lead but Ty battled back :) "  -- Tyrone

  • "Certainly challenging conditions today, with a strong wind and low bounces on the grass, no doubt due to a heavy rainstorm a couple of hours earlier. But Trevor dealt better with the conditions, and with Nick's trademark sliced shots, to get ahead in each set with an early break, and hold on when Nick started to mount a comeback."  -- Trevor

  • "A match full off breaks played in beautiful sun by the seaside on the grass courts at Felixstowe. First set could have gone either way however at 4v4 I finally managed to consolidate a break and serve out the set. Trevor raced away with the second set with fantastically consistent baseline play which resulted in him barely making an error whereas on the other side their we're unfortunately mistakes galore with plenty of cheap points going Trevor's way. Still a set of breaks however Trevor upped his serving game took the second set with ease before bulldozing his way to a 4v1 set lead in the final set. Luckily I dug deep and managed to frequently get to the net to turn the tide of the match in my favour before final getting a hold to win 7v5"  -- Matthew

  • "Finally Trevor and Xin played in the cloudy afternoon to finish the match. Both played consistently, 1:1 to 4:4, and at 4:5, Xin was 15:40 up, two match points, but Trevor was very calm and consistent, Xin made 4 unforced errors. Eventually tie break, at 4:6 Trevor retuned wide. Final score 7:6(7:4) to Xin. Very close games!" -- Xin

  • "Nick gained his first win with a hard fought victory over Matt. It was Matt who soon took control of the first set, breaking Nick twice to take a convincing lead. Nick had no answer to Matt's range of sliced winners and was soon a set down at 6-3. In the second Nick was out of the blocks quicker, attacking Matt more and racing into a 5-0 lead. The next two games were shared and the match was levelled. Matt then held serve to love before Nick took the next three games including a break that was to prove decisive. Despite coming under pressure both players then held serve until, at 5-4 Nick was serving for the match. At 15 all Matt made a couple of uncharacteristic errors. At 40-15 Nick produced a backhand winner to end a close match. "  -- Nick

I was off the mark and sprinted to end before Matt got started. The second set saw a rejuvenated Matt hitting winners and serving well and deservedly taking the second. The third was a ding dong battle with both players holding serves up until 3-3. The weather was not the best for tennis but both players made the most of the conditions with the first set quite close and could have gone either way. In the second set Xin serve let him down and the continuous cleaning of our spectacle after during serve did not help. Nevertheless we enjoyed our match which was played in good spirits despite the conditions. • "Score line doen't really do this match much justice as with the number of deuces we had the sets could have gone either way! First set was pretty much toe to toe with scores level at 3v3 until I managed to string a couple of games in a row to go 5v3 up. In the last game of the set came one of the most bizarre/ luckiest points, where I went to drive volley a floating return from Xin only for me to totally air shot it however somehow the ball ended up bouncing just wide! Hopefully I sub-consciously knew it was out hence the air shot however it's more likely I just had a massive slice of fortune and managed to somehow not touch the ball! Second set was much the same with several long deuces and no easy points on offer. "  -- Matthew

Nick was quick off the blocks taking a 3-1 lead and despite Xin valiantly trying to level, Nick was able to keep a lead and close the set. The tables were turned in the second, Xin racing into a lead with his trademark backhands only for Nick to draw level. However Xin once again moved ahead to level the match. It was Nick’s turn to take the lead in the final set but at 4-2 up Nick stretched for a return only to pull his hamstring. He tried to continue but after losing the next 2 games and his mobility Xin sportingly agreed to suspend play and finish at a later date. Thank you, Xin."  -- Nick

Group Summary:

It was pretty well plain sailing for Daniel on court this time, but in a competitive and busy group like this you have to watch your back! For Daniel, not getting to play his final match could have been costly. As it is, though Gary got that extra match played and equalled Daniel on points, Daniel's head-to-head win carried him across the finish line. With Mark and Stuart not far behind, this was an another excellent, action-packed group.

The first set was quite staccato, chacterised by short rallies and both of us eliciting errors from the other, and some good winners from both of us too. We shared the first 8 games having broken serve once each. I managed to grab the next two games to take a close set. I had the advantage of serving first in set 2, took the first and broke Jamie in the second. Once I'd got my nose in front I was able to take a few more risks and although several of the games went to deuce I managed to keep the momentum going and closed it out. Group Summary:

A very effective return to the league for Simon who played and won all his matches and proved you don't need bonus points to top the table. The matches may have looked comfortable for Simon but the scores don't tell the whole truth. Against Andrew, Simon commented, "the second was the hardest fought set I've played throughout this tournament, it was just luck on the key points that swung it my way!" Runner-up Paul also had a good round, only succumbing to Simon and Ashley, will be pleased to have bagged the bonus points to ease him in to the bronze position. Once again your comments bring the matches to life and it's nice to know that your on-court efforts will leave something for posterity! For now, though, it is all about the future and we can't wait till the next round.

Justin pulled one game back, but it wasn’t enough, despite some good lob shots along the way and Ashley eventually prevailed. The heat made a relatively short match feel like both players had played for a lot longer!"  -- Ashley

Reveal CommentJorunas Barzdzius bt Ashley Miller (May 27) 6-4, 2-6, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A fine morning for tennis, albeit with generous cloud cover. Jorunas set the tone by breaking to love in the very first game, before Ashley levelled to 1-1. Good play by Jorunas coupled with unforced errors from Ashley then enabled Jorunas to 4 games in a row & a commanding lead. Ashley tried to rally, pulling back to 4-5, before Jorunas held serve to take the first set. After winning 3 of the last 4 games in the first set, Ashley managed to continue that form in the second set. The 3rd set saw Jorunas step back up again, with the points ebbing & flowing throughout. After saving 2 match points at 5-3, Ashley clawed it back to 5-5, but Jorunas was too strong & closed it out on his 4th match point for a deserved win."  -- Ashley

Reveal CommentJustin Morey bt Paul Cryer (May 19) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "After a slighty wait as all the courts were busy, paul and I finally got going. The score did not reflect the tennis played, with a lot of games going to duece, Paul struggled a bit getting his first serve in, when he did they were difficult to return. With a few more games under his belt he will be a force to be reckoned with. In the first set I raced out to 3-0 but paul pulled it back to 3-2, even when i led 4-3 it was all to play for. In the second set i again raced out to 3-0, but this time i won the tight games. I would like to thank paul for an enjoyable game and hope he has more luck in his upcoming games."  -- Justin
