Collapse AllChristchurch Park, Ipswich Singles - Round 35 | Thursday 25 June 2020 to Wednesday 19 August 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 22 July 2020)

There was an extra group in our first round back post-lockdown and we welcomed 6 new players to the fold alongside our regulars and returners... and it was great to see you completed over two thirds of all possible matches. For many this was the first time you'd picked up a racquet in several months so that's a fantastic effort and we're glad you enjoyed getting back on court! Thanks for supporting your local league and we hope to see you back next time for more matches.

Group Summary:

There was a 2-way tie on points at the top of Group 1 but it was Charles who edged clear of Tyrone in the standings by winning their head to head although "having lost both previous matches to Tyrone it was always going to be tough", especially playing on damp grass courts! Charles had another "tough match" against Trevor while Tyrone had to battle hard against Avery and Trevor, the latter being Tyrone's first match back "having not picked up a tennis racquet for several months"... well played!

  • "Word of warning.. never attempt a tennis match at 2pm in 30c heat after an all night bender the night before, not going to sleep until 6am! Played on the grass at Felixstowe in hot but windy conditions I had to start well and fortunately did taking the first 5 games before Trevor got onto the scoreboard. The 2nd set was again a one-sided contest, this time in Trevor's favour, playing consistently well and chasing down shots that looked almost impossible to get to. It was inevitable that the decider was going to be a closer contest. I lead 3-1, 4-2 and then served for the match at 5-3 but Trevor broke, held and then broke again to serve for the match at 6-5, I then broke and the tie break was a mini repeat of the 1st set. Good match Trevor "  -- Daniel

  • "An epic battle at a very busy Christchurch Park. Tyrone started very well and raced to a 5-1 lead but then the game seemed to take a turn. Avery thought back to 4-5 and had a point to level but Tyrone was strong enough to hold out. Avery dominated the next set with great serving and big forehands. With the crowd growing at the side of the court we decided to determine the winner via a 10 pint tie break. Avery started well continuing with his great returning and went 5-1 up in the tie break. Tyrone then knuckled down and defended his unbeaten run against Avery by being solid and consistent. Avery missed a big forehand by inches at 7-5 which could of changed the result. This gave Tyrone the chance to comeback and take the tie break 10-7 :-)"  -- Tyrone

Player Comments:

  • "The match started with us exchanging net cord winners with me hitting a wild slap shot at net that hit the underside of the tape but it had enough on it to rebound itself over the net to both our bemusement. Trevor then instantly repaid me in the next point. I got ahead and kept in front to take the first set with trevor lacking his trademark consistency from the baseline. The second got off to a similar start but Trevor's consistency started to come back as the set progressed and was 40-0 up with 3 break points at 3-3 before I came up with the goods to hold serve at a crucial stage of the match. If trevor had got the break he would quite possibly have leveled the match and taken it to a match tie-break which could have gone either way."  -- Marcus

  • "A very tiring match, perhaps we were helped by the 3 courts changes at a busy Christchurch Park. Avery started the match strongly taking a 4-2 lead. A change of court and 10 minutes later Daniel finally started playing much better but it was such a close set a tie-break was probably a fair way to end it. The 2nd set started off going Daniel's way, taking a 3-1 lead before an unusual sequence saw Avery win 4 straight games taking him to a 5-3 lead before Daniel won 4 straight games to take the match when a 3rd set looked more likely. Great hitting, great serving and plenty of hard fought points. Very good match. "  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "We re-newed our rivalry going back twelve years at the place where it all started. We played the new short-set format which is a great idea and has been introduced at the perfect time. I took a lead to go to 2-1, 30-0, then Daniel pulled some tricks out of his bag to turn the set around. The second set was another case of de ja vu with me ahead at a similar scoreline but it went a different way with me keeping my nose in front and not letting it slip. Daniel made me win the additional game required at 4-3 to edge another close set. This meant a match tie-break to decide another very close contest. Daniel took an early lead before I got going again and found the right track again to victory after almost two hours of firey but fair tennis."  -- Marcus

Player Comments:

  • "Having not picked up a tennis racquet for several months Tyrone was a little nervous coming into this match against Trevor who had lost a close encounter the day before. Tyrone started well racing to a 2-0 lead but as ever Trevor hang in every point and defended very well and gained a 5-3 lead. Trevor served for the set at 5-4, leading 30-15 Tyrone had to go for his shots and was very lucky hitting the net cord two times in a row and to eventually level up the set. Tyrone took a 4-0 lead in the tie break and despite a fightback form Trevor the deficit was too much to come back. With the first set behind him Tyrone relaxed and started to put more power behind the groundstrokes and took advantage of an exhausted Trevor. Great to be back x "  -- Tyrone

Congratulations to Xin Chen for winning Group 2 in style, winning all 6 matches to finish a full 5 points clear of runner up Stuart. Xin Chen didn't drop a set either which is also impressive, while elsewhere Stuart and Mike both won close 3 setters with Stuart's win over Philippa featuring "so many deuces I don't think any of us could keep count". Gary did well stave off a third set against Philippa by winning a close second set tiebreak that was "nip and tuck".

The opening games were evenly matched until I managed to get ahead and take the first set. Pip then got ahead in the second set and held the lead to take that, also 6-3. A well placed volley got me the breaker. Set2 my calf muscle was getting tight, and knew I wouldn't win a 3rd set, so a close 2nd set was inevitable, with many games going to deuce. With the advantage of being ahead I was able to take the initiative and grab a couple of tight games in set 2 and once ahead managed to keep Mike at bay, assisted by a couple of defensive lobs which on another day would have gone long, but found the back of the court today. At 2/2 in set 1 I had points for a 3/2 lead but Xin started to find his range, took that game and then upped his consistency to put me under pressure with solid play and some great forehand winners to take set 1. With that set under his belt Xin took the initiative cranked up his serve and played very well to knock me over with little resistance. Full credit to Xin for playing in a very sporting way, a most enjoyable defeat!! Well played Xin"  -- Gary

  • "This was a cracking encounter played in changeable conditions, and as the scores suggest was a very tight one! Stuart started the better and took a 3/0 lead before I grabbed a couple of close games. At 4/2 down I steadied up and edged the next 4 to sneak set 1. History repeated in the early part of set 2, but this time Stuart took control and hit winner after winner to cruise it. Set 3 had some drama, I took a 3/0 lead, Stuart held for 3/1 then we had an epic 5th game on my serve which took almost as long as set 2! Stuart won that and with my lead reduced to 1 game there was a lot of scoreboard pressure. I squeaked the next game, held serve and nicked the last game to edge it. Played in great sporting spirit, well played Stuart"  -- Gary

The second set was a very close affair with both of us struggling to win service games and dogged defence from both of us winning out over outright winners. I had leads at 3/1, 4/2 and 5/4 but Pip pegged me back each time, and cruised the 12th game to take us to the tiebreak. That too was nip and tuck with Pip having a set point to take it to a third set before I just managed to squeak it. If we’d have gone to a third I think Pip would have won. Well played Pip"  -- Gary

On the second set however were both warmed up and started strong and each of us broke serves resulted to 1-1, as the game goes on there were long ralies and lots of dueces and we eventually get to 5-1 in favor of me. At this point josh doubled his efforts and worked his way up to 5-5. It ended at 7-5 both josh and i gave our best and enjoyed the game. Thank you josh for the nice game. Looking forward to play with you again. Cheers!"  -- Benhar
