Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable match with plenty of good rallies. James started well and the first few games were shared before I edged ahead and maintained the lead for the rest of the 1st set. James started the 2nd very well with some cracking groundstrokes and volleying going 3-1 ahead before I found enough consistency to take the last 5 games. I look forward to our next match. "  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "the 2 unbeaten players final got on court, both having played in the last 2 days. Charlie started off well 2.0 30.0 but was pegged back to 2.2 40.15 down but managed to hold on against the big forehands to take the first set 6.2. The second set went with serve and very long games before Charlie broke and at 5.4 40.0 Avery still got back to duece before a drop shot finally did the job"  -- Charles
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Nick Anthony (May 22) 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Another tough match with Avery lasting just over two hours. The first 5 games went with serve then there were 4 breaks with each player trading forehands. Tie break was as inevitable as it was close, both players had leads until at 5-5 Nick won his serve then Avery over hit a forehand to concede 7-5. Predictably Avery stepped up his game in the second with power serves and big forehands dominating to take it 6-2. The final set was closer but Avery’s attacking style gave him the edge and at 4-4 he served out then broke Nick to end another tight and sporting contest."  -- Nick

Player Comments:

  • "A match played in the rain and wind, thanks to Daniel for re arranging last minute so i can play Sunday, the match started with lots of long rallies and plenty of running with Daniel topspin and slices, but Charlie won the vital points to win 6.1 6.3"  -- Charles
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Philippa Cowie (May 11) 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "We played the first set in quite tricky conditions with bright sun at one end and a crosswind but this didn't hamper the quality of play too much and Pippa got off to a perfect start leading 3-0. I managed to pull back to draw level at 3-3 before Pippa edged away again and a tie-break was fair way to conclude the set. I lead 3-0 and 4-2 before Pippa came back with some very attacking play and good volleying to take it 7-5. I got off to a good start in the 2nd and 3rd sets and the scorelines in those certainly didn't reflect Pippa's play as she maintained a high level throughout in a match filled with some fantastic shots and rallies. I look forward to our next match. "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Xin Chen (May 9) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Perfect conditions for this match played at Kesgrave TC. The match had plenty of entertaining long rallies with some good winners from both. Xin served out a couple of service games well and rescued one game hitting 3 strong serves in a row from break point down to win. I managed to see it through well in the 2nd set to win using the slice and topspin shots to good depth. Good game. "  -- Daniel
Reveal CommentCharles Fulcher bt James Mower (May 6) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "very nice match played under floodlights, James started off winning his serve, Charlie started to make more passing shots, each game was competitive with James making some great smashes. nice to meet another new person."  -- Charles
Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Philippa Cowie (May 1) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "It was played in a very changeable weather, Xin started well with 2:0, but Philippa upped her game with good net play and with good serves, and lead 4:2. Xin was forced to lift his level. At 5:5, Xin luckily won next 2 games. Set 2, Xin was more consistent. Well played, Philippa, certainly you have improved your games since last time we played!"  -- Xin
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Daniel Peck (May 1) 2-6, 7-5, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "An epic three hours game of tennis at Grundisburgh with Dan flying out of the blocks with some brilliant slices and backhand returns to take the first set. In the second it was more even and Avery managed to win three straight games before Dan came back to level up at 4-4. It was a bit of a ding dong battle with Avery managing to find form late in the game to close it off. In the third we both settled but with my serves improving and the unforced error counts reducing I just managed to hold on to take the third.....a tough day on court with Dan hitting several returns which were worthy of being listed as shots of the tournament....,only wish we had them on film...."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentNick Anthony bt James Mower (Apr 29) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Nick and James resumed “hostilities”in the tennis league after a 10 year break. Nick started the sharper quickly taking a 4-0 lead. But James was finding his form and struck back with a strong serve and ground shots to reduce the deficit to 4-2. After a long deuce game in Nick’s favour, he was able to close the set 6-2. The second set followed a similar pattern, Nick taking a 4-0 lead before James took a convincing game. However Nick increased the pressure and closed out the set without further reply. A closer game than the score suggests and very sporting. Thank you, James, I hope it’s not another 10 years before we play or I might be in a care home! "  -- Nick
Reveal CommentPhilippa Cowie bt James Mower (Apr 27) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Caught the last of the setting sun for this match which prompted a quick court change after the first game. Pip started strong to break serve and carried this form through to claim the set 6-1. James struck back in the second set breaking Pip, but this advanced was immediately rebuffed. The serves settled for a moment with James holding his from 0-40 at 1-2 to even the set. Pip managed to move off from there finding greater consistency to close out the match. Many great points with excellent ball chasing and winners from both players throughout the match. Pleasure to play you, James; let's have another one soon! Best of luck with the rest of the matches and maybe see you back at Kesgrave before too long!"  -- Philippa
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt Philippa Cowie (Apr 25) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A first meeting with Pip and a very competitive and enjoyable encounter. The first set was quite close with Pip covering the court well and some very good net points. In the second both players battled with serves in the swirling wind and on the sunny side of the court but nevertheless a good morning of tennis player in good spirits...."  -- Avery
Reveal CommentAvery Jackson bt James Mower (Apr 24) 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "It was great seeing James after about ten years away from the league. What a difference a decade can bring. Gone are the handshakes after matches and now replaced with a touch of the racket and social distancing. James was a bit slow off the mark as expected being away for several years. In the second set we saw James serves and his trademark cross court shots improved making it a more competitive encounter and with more game time he will be back to form and who knows the handshakes may return in tennis....still it is great to be back on court"  -- Avery
Reveal CommentXin Chen bt Nick Anthony (Apr 24) 2-6, 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Nick and Xin endured another long battle at a sunny and breezy Kesgrave. Nick started the sharper, his serve and forcing ground shots put him in control to take the first set 6-2. Nick continued in the same vein and raced to a 4-2 lead in the second. But Xin was always likely to hit back and do it proved. Xin raised his game, his trademark backhand dominating the rallies and 4 games on the spin drew Xin level. Nick started the sharper in the final set but at 2-0 and 3-1 still could not shake off Xin. At 5-4 Nick could see the finishing line but Xin rallied yet again and with a rush of 3 games took the match. Another warmer of attrition but enjoyable. I must be a masochist. Well played Xin!"  -- Nick
Reveal CommentCharles Fulcher bt Xin Chen (Apr 18) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Lovely tennis conditions, mild with no wind or sun. Xin raced into a 2.0 30 love lead before Charlie found his game with better forehands cross court, despite several long games, and lots of game points the first set went 6.2 to Charlie, second set first 3 games had deuce games but Charlie stole them all and went onto to win 6.1, good game thanks Xin"  -- Charles
Reveal CommentDaniel Peck bt Nick Anthony (Apr 17) 5-7, 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A thoroughly entertaining and equally tiring match to start off the new round. Nick started the match with some great shots and his consistency saw him through the 1st set with me having to play catch up much of the time. This continued in the 2nd set, but with Nick at 4-2 up I somehow found a bit more energy and tried to just keep the ball in play as much as possible. This slowly worked and I was able to come back and take the 2nd 7-5. With a close start to the deciding set at 2-2, Nick took the lead again with some clever slices and making me run to all areas of the court. Eventually, and for the first time in the match, I managed to put a run of games together to take it 6-3 in just over 2.5hrs. Good game, well played Nick. "  -- Daniel

Player Comments:

  • "Played in good spirit and in a very variable weather condition, we had snow, rain, sunshine, and wind. James started well by broke Xin's first game, lucky Xin broke back. after both held serves and James came baak from 0:40, Xin broke James's service games, and got the first set. Second set are similar. Have to say we were bit rusty as have not played for awhile. "  -- Xin

A bit more balanced in the second with Avery taking a 4-1 lead only to be pegged back by Xin. A close match which could have gone any way...both players were just happy to be back on court.."  -- Avery

  • "We endured rain and hail to get this one to a conclusion. James started really well and took a 3-0 lead. I came back to lead 4-3 and the set continued to be tight from there. James broke me and held his own serve to take it 7-5. The second set saw me play my way back into the match. There were long rallies and many close games, but it was me who took the important points to claim the equalising set. The third set was a repeat. I managed to take the crucial points in the close games. 6-1 in the third set does James no justice. It was much closer than the score suggests. Thanks for the match James."  -- David

  • "This was a great match, played in perfect conditions at ccp. I started positively, blasting into a 4-0 lead, David was hitting a few crucial shots too long. I took the first set, and expected a tougher 2nd. It was, but I kept the errors down and managed to make a few volley winners, and took the set and the match. Thanks David. "  -- Mark

  • "A great match, we started last week, at CCP. First set was straightforward for me, but the 2nd set saw Rafa storming to a 5-1 lead. I got it back to 6-6, but Rafa took the tie break. Unfortunately, we ran out of time as the park was closing with the light fading. So we reconvened for the 3rd set. This time, I stormed ahead, taking a 4-0 lead, before Rafa could get a couple of games back. But I held on to take the match. Thanks for a fine game!"  -- Mark

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable afternoon's tennis. The tone was set from the first game as I got a very fortunate net cord on just the second point, although Fiona did win the game. Later, 2 miss hit returns in a row from me resulted in winners. Fiona did claim a net cord of her own, but it's fair to say luck was not on her side here. The score doesn't quite tell the story of a match containing multiple close games with plenty of deuces. Fiona hit some really good winners throughout the match too. Thanks for the match Fiona."  -- David

Mark started much stronger and ran away with the 1st set as I struggled to get going. 2nd set was much more like it with many deuce games and good rallies worthy of some video footage ?, I managed to take the set in the end. Deciding set started with me going into a 5-1 lead before Mark upping his game to come back to 5-4, I managed to take the next very tense game with many deuces yet again. Great game as always thanks Mark"  -- Stuart

  • "We started with 5 straight service breaks. I led 3-2 before finally holding in game 6. It would prove to be just enough, although the final game of the set lasted as long as the rest of the games together with multiple deuces on my serve before I managed to close it out. The second set saw more close games, but I was able to find a bit more consistency and take a hard earned win. Thanks for the match Rafa. "  -- David

The second set continued in a similar fashion, very close and competitive with every point being a battle! Eventually I won 6-4 to set up the third set decider. Ashley quickly broke back to draw level, eventually closing out the 1st set. The 2nd set ebbed and flowed, with never more than 1 game in it and several well-placed lob shots from Paul. Ashley led early, but once in front, Paul just about stayed there until what seemed like the inevitable tie-break arrived, which Paul secured to draw level overall. Ashley held and broke serve at the start of the 3rd set, before Paul got to within a game at 2-1, but from then on Ashley managed to take command, closing out the set and a well-fought match."  -- Ashley
