  • "Played in a sunny afternoon. Set 1, after 1:1 , Kieran broke my serve, I then broke back 2:2; I was lucky enough won the following 4 games, some good long rallies. Set 2, we were 2:2, then I broke Kieran's serves, then I was serving at 4:2, after a few deuces and long game, broken. 4:3, then 4:4; 5:5; 6:6. At tiebreak I was more consistent 7:1. Thanks for very competitive games!"  -- Xin

  • "Quality way to spend a Sunday morning with two long bruising sets with each player having to earn each point leading to plenty of taxing long rallies in fairly warm conditions. First few games we're delicately posed before I just got the edge to go 4v1 up. Jack dug deep and regrouped to very quickly rattle 3 games in a row thanks to solid baseline play putting me under immense pressure leading to a number of errors. Next two games we're again closely fought with me just edging the set 6v4. This pattern continued through into the second until midway when the set when the intensity and rally length ramped up another level to make it a very taxing and enjoyable final few games with both players digging deep to avoid any cheap points. Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable Easter weekend of tennis playing three top players over three days. Xin started well and broke serve early and led 2-0 at the start. I managed to held on and break back quickly and played more consistent to close out the first set. A similar start in the second but was unable to break back to replicate the first. Xin served well and was unplayable on the backhand side throughput the second set. We were both spent in the third but managed to be more consistent with close games despite the scoreline. Player Comments:

  • "Fantastic fun in the sun with another three set battle with Avery. In a set full of breaks it was Avery who was able to race ahead thanks to double faults galore from my end and booming forehand winners from his side of the court. With the set stretching to 45mins it was Avery who finished it strongly to take it 6v3. Luckily the serving slowly started to click for me, that on top of the backhand now firing on all cylinders allowed me to race to 5v0 lead. Despite the scoreline you never take a set easily off Avery, and he regrouped to force me to serve it out and take it to a third set (abit of a formality when we play each other!) Deciding set scoreline doesn't really tell the tale with plenty of punishing rallies and good tennis all-round"  -- Matthew

Player Comments:

  • "Enjoyable afternoon of tennis in rare sunshine! As you'd expect with a match involving myself and Xin; backhand winners galore and plenty of long gruelling rallies. First game certainly highlighted this pattern with the game prolonging for a full ten minutes before a devastating backhand winner down the line clinched it for Xin. Rest of the set was fairly close with probably only the net play being the difference between the two players which allowed me to clinch it 6v2. Second set mirrored the first with another long service game from Xin which I managed to break this time around. Close set which could have gone differently with me being 15v40 down on serve at 4v3 up, luckily managed to grind the game back in my favour and win 6v3."  -- Matthew

Player Comments:

  • "Our first meeting was an enjoyable encounter. The first set lasted for over an hour and had to be settled by a very close tiebreak. Jack court coverage was excellent throughout the first and the game went on serves throughout the first. The second started with more of the same. At 2-1, Jack slipped and needed a medical timeout but credit to him he came back and gave it his best shot. A strong performance from Jack, and a welcome addition to the top group and looking forward to a few more competitive matches in the future "  -- Avery

  • "End of a hot day meant the courts were dry and shady for our match. Pip started strong taking the first 3 games. Stuart punched back to get a couple of games and some excellent points played throughout. Second set started similarly, but much closer games meant that it was a surprising 0-3 for Pip. Stuart found some excellent serves and really upped his game to take the next 4. Games were back and forth with some having multiple deuces and some over in a blink, but a tie-break was eventually found. Pip seemed to have the early edge, but start fought back again to make it 3-3 on the change of ends. Pip snuck ahead again and managed to take the set on the second chance. Great game, Stuart! Thank you"  -- Philippa

  • "After having a 45 minute wait for a court we finally got going. 1st game went to 6 deuces before I nabbed it and continued to go 4-0 up, David got 2 back before I finished set off. The next 2 sets were a real slog with no easy points to be had, both players playing some nice shots and many good rallies and close fought games. David managed to take 2nd set before I took the 3rd and the match. Very enjoyable game and very close games all the way through, thanks. "  -- Stuart

  • "Cloudy with an occasional shower for our game today. As per usual playing Mark it was a close hard fought match. Today unusually we both struggled to hold serve, 1st set was back and forth with many good rallies and deuce games with Mark taking it, 2nd set I came out playing aggressive tennis to take it. 3rd was where it was all happening, Mark going into 3-0 lead playing some great shots before I managed to get on the board, Mark then went 4-1 & 5-2, 8th game seemed to be the turning point where at match point we had a point the pro's would have been proud off that I took, I then managed to get to 6-5 and after another great game managed to edge over the line. Well done Mark great game as usuall and look forward to the next. "  -- St
  • "As Stuart said, a great contest! I had a couple of match points, at 5-4 in the 3rd set, and the rallies for those points were amazing. Well played Stuart." -- Mark

  • "Lovely afternoon at CCP for our second meet. Pip started strong breaking Austin's serve and continued this momentum throughout the first set. Austin threatened to break back at 5-0, but Pip recovered from 15-40 to take the set. Austin then started the second set very strong firing some excellent first serves in to take it to 2-2. Pip was able to take hold again and saw the set out. Some great retrievals from both sides to keep points alive and both were rewarded for this on various occasions. Good game, Austin and good luck with your next. Thank you "  -- Philippa

  • "Lovely day at CCP and good to get my 1st match played. I started very quick going into 5-0 before Austin got 2 back with some nice shots and good rallies. 2nd set again I started strong going 3-0 up before a long 4th game with many good rallies and deuce points which I managed to scrape through and ge to 5, Austin pulled one back before I closed the match out. Well played Austin and good luck with remainder of games. "  -- Stuart

  • "Gusts of wind made play tricksy at times. Match started in our usual fashion of receiver winning, but David broke this trend on game two. I pulled back to lead 2-3 before David evened the score. I took the next two to serve for the set, but David played well to bring one back. I managed to get the next. David went on the attack more in the second set with more aggressive shots and coming to the net, but he was surprisingly only rewarded with one game. Great battle as usual, thank you."  -- Philippa

  • "Played in a warm and sunny Christchurch Park. This was the first meeting for Austin and me. Over the course of the match there were quite a few deuces, but in the first set in particular, it was me who was able to convert to game wins. The second set saw me take a 5-1 lead and hoping to wrap it up. To his credit, Austin hung in there and came back to 5-4. I was forced to serve for the match and again, at 40-0 up, I thought I was there, but a crazy topsy turvy point deservedly went Austin's way with a great finish down the line. He took the next point too. 40-30 and I didn't fancy a 3rd set! Fortunately, I was finally able to get over the line and take the win."  -- David

  • "A calm, sunny day at CCP for this match. First game went to many deuces, with good play from both sides. Pip managed to see it through and got to 0-5 before Mark got on the board. Pip took the set 6-1 which was no reflection of play. Second set started mark's way, taking a 2-0 lead with stunning passing shots. Pip brought one back before Mark kicked off again to 2-5. Momentum swung again and pip managed to squeeze the next 4 games with Mark making more errors than he was happy with. He conceded at 6-5 as an early gift to Pip. Thanks for the game, Mark."  -- Philippa
  • "Well played Pip. The forced retirement, on my part, was necessary, with my niggling knee , and as I knew I was playing another match 24 hours later, I made the decision. But that doesn't take anything away from our battle. And congratulations on your wedding next week!" -- Mark

  • "This was our third meeting in CCP tennis league. Zelma had won the previous 2 encounters, so I knew I was in for a tough match and so it proved. The first few games went against serve before I managed to hold in the 4th game and broke again to lead 4-1. The gap was decisive and I took the first set 6-2. The second started in a similar manner with neither player able to hold serve. We also had a few counting issues between us. If in doubt, the score was deuce. There were too many to count and we will blame that on the fact that we kept losing track of games. When we finally worked through that and the dueces, I was able to serve for the match and claim the second set 6-4. Thanks for another great match Zelma."  -- David

  • "As expected, a really good game against David . The 1st set was tight all the way. Tho at 4-4 we had to change court, and maybe this helped me, as I won the next 2 games to take the set. The 2nd set seemed to be easier for me. And before I knew it, was 5-0 up. A few good volleys and the set and match was taken. Thanks for the match David."  -- Mark

  • "The weather may have been balmy but the tennis was far from it. Jamie proved to be a difficult and challenging opponent with some great groundstrokes that he sent screaming past me. Resorting to drop shots and the odd succesful lob enabled me to turn the tide and clinch the first set. My singles head got better in the second set and that allowed me to get a few more winning passing shots in court rather than in the tram lines. That small shift settled the second set. A really friendly and competitive match that epitomised local tennis league. I look forward to playing Jamie again but will no doubt have to come up with some new strategies as he will have sussed my drop and lob solution. "  -- Annie
