This is how it works:

  • We have doubles and singles rounds!
  • Players/teams are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • The league is mixed sex, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • In doubles teams may be any combination of gender
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also available on the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

"In spite of defeat in both games was great to get on court and have played against a couple of incredibly nice guys (which makes all the easier to lose) who hopefully will able to get some non-league practice in too",

David Wall

"It has been great and I have thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely do it again."

"It was such fun, I was pleased to be losing less with each match played and even more pleased at just how many games went stuck at deuce/adv for ages. Hey, I now need to fine tune my competitive spirit and not give up at the last point or feel sorry for my opponent when I get to 40-0! So close, yet so far!! Count me in for next time."

"It was great to meet new people and hope to organise some doubles games in the near future to continue to play more tennis. Really enjoyed having the opportunity to play both competitively and socially, particularly at Brockwell Park which has a terrific atmosphere on a Sunday morning (although kept missing brunch at the Lilo!). Looking forward to playing some further matches and meeting even more people, the league has allowed me to really enjoy tennis again following my move to London. Thanks to you both, Sally and Nigel,"

Chris Burton

"Just wanted to say thank you so much for a fantastic league - it was my first time playing competitively and it has been a blast. The people I've met have been really lovely and you’ve made it very easy to do."

Genna Smith

"A great round of tennis all the members were very competitive... Looking forward to the next round "

Moses Kabba

Player Comments:

  • "Paolo calm and calculated player. Enjoyed the game. I have to say the series since after lock down taken a toll on my body I have put in the many many miles but happy to have played with all these nicer guys!! I look forward to put in an even better and fun and competitive performance with you next round!!"  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Marcos Fernandez (Sep 18) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Close match with the first set particularly tight and coming down to the last few games. Blustery conditions at times meant for a number of unorthodox points but otherwise a fun match as always against Marcos. "  -- Tom
David Jovic bt Marcos Fernandez (Sep 12) 6-3, 6-0
Reveal CommentBrian O'neill bt Ogba Ogbimi (Sep 12) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I knew this was going to be a battle looking at Ogba's other scores, so I had to bring my A game. I got off to a flyer, racing to 5-0 and barely an unforced error. However I wasn't complacent as I knew the fightback was coming, and the second set was a closer affair. At 2-2, I managed to break from being 40-0 down and that probably swung it. I had to finish in two sets or I was going to run out of steam, Carreno Busta style! Thanks for trekking out to my club Ogba... Hopefully see you next time! "  -- Brian
Reveal CommentOgba Ogbimi bt Marcos Fernandez (Sep 6) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "First meeting with Marco. Like other matches I have been having leads but it was not able to build on them. This time I had run away leads but credit to Marco for always fighting back particularly in the second set when I was 5-0 up! and serving for the match! It was a real scare! I thought it was going to be de javu again! Marco fought to get the next 4 games! but I was able to break his own serve for the win! All the best in rest of your matches and hope to play you again next round. "  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Tom Punch (Sep 6) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A competitive match with Tom and I was able to take advantage of a couple of mental lapses and untimely double faults by Tom who was otherwise pushing me around with his heavy and deep ground strokes. Happy to have escaped. "  -- David
Vincent Rouget bt Tom Punch (Sep 5) 6-2, 7-6 (7-4)
Reveal CommentPaolo Giua bt Marcos Fernandez (Sep 4) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Good fun today with Marcos, finally being able to play each other for the first time!"  -- Paolo
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Ogba Ogbimi (Sep 1) 0-6, 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "My first ever meeting with Tom. I got off to a flyer! Playing some immaculate tennis out of this world! My serves was consistent and I was moving very well. Before Tom could settle I had taken the set with bagel! Just when I was in full control and bolstered the lights went out for 15mins and momentum swiftly changed. This was a new Tom! Fully determined and chasing every ball! For whatever reason I was finding it hard to refocus. Deservedly Tom took the set 6-3! Momentum continued in Tom's favour. 3rd set. He was the braver! Serving exceptionally well. At match point he missed a smash !And then the comeback started or so I thought any way I kept a spirited effort to 4-5 ! Ironically I missed smashed also. See U soon well done
  • "Ogba started on fire and stormed the first set. The second and third sets were a lot closer. The third in particular turned into a bit of an odyssey as Ogba saved multiple match points in one particularly long game at 5-3. I managed to sneak the win only after Ogba saved another couple of match points in the following game. Great fun and looking forward to the next time we play." -- Tom
Reveal CommentPaolo Giua bt David Jovic (Aug 29) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Always fun and tight matches with David. A match that will be remember forever for being in the background of a very professional music video being shot in the meanwhile in Burgess Park"  -- Paolo
Reveal CommentVincent Rouget bt Ogba Ogbimi (Aug 27) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "My first meeting with Vincent. Very decent player and he deserved the win As with my other games though, I was in the match toe to toe. I just couldn't match the intensity as match went on. However, happy with the run in of matches played and hopefully the next time I can build on my lead. "  -- Ogba
Reveal CommentTom Punch bt Brian O'neill (Aug 23) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Thankfully a slightly shorter match than last time! Brian struggled for rhythm on his serve with some double faults helping me get a couple of breaks in 1st first while I managed to get through a series of break points on my own serve (with help from lady luck!). Much tighter 2nd set with Brian hitting some typically huge forehands which came down to me breaking with Brain serving to stay in the match. "  -- Tom
David Jovic bt Tom Harvey (Aug 22) 6-3, 7-5
David Jovic bt Ogba Ogbimi (Aug 18) 6-4, 5-7, 6-1
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Brian O'neill (Aug 18) 1-6, 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Fantastic conditions for tennis on a warm still evening in Burgess Park. We had a topsy turvy match that was very similar to our previous meeting. Brian stormed the first set, playing some blistering tennis. His level then dropped of in the second and third set as mine improved. As usual, there were a number of entertaining points throughout; generally playing out with Brian hitting some ridiculously good ground strokes and me scrabbling around to try and get a racquet on the ball! "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentTom Punch bt Ogba Ogbimi (Aug 16) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Tight match that could have gone either way with Ogba serving well, chasing down every ball and producing some great volleys. I got the rub the green with a tricky low some coming to my rescue at 3-1 down in the second set turning the set and match in my favour. Looking forward to the next one! "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentPaolo Giua bt Vincent Rouget (Aug 15) 1-6, 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Tough match as always against Vincent. Both very tense in the third set and we didn't play spectacular tennis, still quite fun!" -- Paolo
Reveal CommentBrian O'neill bt Marcos Fernandez (Aug 13) 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5)

Player Comments:

  • "Ridiculous heat for this match! I started off well and snatched the first set, before beginning to wilt in the sun and Marcos' superior fitness came into play. I just about managed to survive to a third set tie break by drinking a few gallons of water and a couple of lucozades, and summoned what little reserves I had left to clinch it. Would like to say it was fun, but it was more a near death experience!! Hopefully future matches a little cooler!!"  -- Brian

Player Comments:

  • "Strange match on a warm evening with neither player playing to their potential and both winning the same amount of games. Nick started the stronger easily taking the first set. I couldn’t get anything going and ground out the second and third sets in similar fashion bringing Nick down to my level just edging the match. Both players would like the rematch to show what they’ve really got! "  -- Chris
Reveal CommentRobert Dixon bt Hugo Williams (Sep 13) 6-4, 0-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Exhausting hot match against a very strong attacking opponent. First set was a bit scrappy and then I was almost too lethargic in the 2nd to compete. By the time the 3rd set started it had cooled down and I finally managed to play some decent tennis. Hugh had the better game for most of the match and actually one more games than me."  -- Robert
Nick Crowe bt Alex Bhattacharya (Sep 11) 6-2, 6-1
Reveal CommentChris Taylor bt Daniel Bourne (Sep 9) 0-6, 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "An up and down match with Daniel winning the first 7 games comfortably as I struggled with timing after a three week holiday. Decisive few games early in the second set with the scores being 3-2, then I found some form and didn't look back serving well in the third. Strange scoreline highlighting each players dips in form. A rematch would be interesting. "  -- Chris

Collapse AllKennington & Brockwell Parks Doubles - Round 27 | Thursday 30 January 2020 to Wednesday 8 April 2020 (Midpoint: Wednesday 4 March 2020)

Well done on getting so many matches played this round, despite some less than tennis-friendly weather. There would of course been even more matches played, had the Coronavirus not stopped played and well done to Andrew & Rachel and Callum & Sally in group 2 for squeezing in a final match before we were all kept indoors! Looking forward to seeing you all back in action when restrictions are lifted!

Group Summary:

A convincing win for group champs Alberto and Gherardo who won three matches without dropping a set and got their bonus points to boot! That made it hard for David and James to catch them, but they had a good run to finish runners up. It was a shame Jesus and Paolo played one match only and that Russell and Nick didn't get going (hope you are ok), but we know doubles is hard to arrange and of course this round was cut short a couple of weeks early.

Group Summary:

There was a nail biting finale between the eventual champs (Ynda and Adrian) and runners up (Oliver and Simeon) at 4-6, 6-3 and 7-7 in the tie break. It does not get much close than that. It took 8 more points but Ynda and Adrian won 12-10! It was their third three setter in this closely fought group and they needed their one extra win (against Callum and Sally) to clinch the group. Many congratulations to them. Oliver and Simeon were just one point behind.

Player Comments:

  • "Conditions were a little wet and windy, but luckily relatively calm for most of the match. A very close one with some good, varied play on either side. Both teams won points off solid serves, strong grounstrokes and (often short) slice balls. Except for 3 or 4 quick service holds and a couple of brisk breaks, most games were tight. The same was true of the match tiebreaker - played due to time limitations - in which Adrian and I took an early lead 4-1, but Oliver and Simeon fought back. At 7-7, the match was anyone's for the taking, but we eventually came through 12-10."  -- Ynda

Player Comments:

  • "While at times we were all competing against the wind and damp balls more than the team on the other side, we battled through it with some good rallies, serves and varied shotmaking. The conditions made it difficult to build and maintain a rhythm, but we crafted a close, competitive contest nonetheless!"  -- Ynda
