Vertical Tabs

This is how it works:

  • We have doubles and singles rounds!
  • Players/teams are organised into groups of between 5 to 9 people of a similar standard
  • The league is mixed sex, so men and women play each other
  • Groups are put together by standard and there can be any combination of men and women in a group (we do not guarantee a balance of men and women and you could be the only man in a group of women or vice versa!)
  • In doubles teams may be any combination of gender
  • Contact details are emailed and posted to each player's account page
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everyone over the age of 18
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group. Contact details are also posted to your Account Page
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • A point is awarded for each set won
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls)
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a voucher for £20 to be spent in the Local Tennis League online shop. A winner's certificate is also available on the winner's Account Page as a PDF file.
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Timothy Jones (Jan 18) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "A rare win against Tim for me in slippery yet beautiful conditions. I was up 4-0 in the 2nd set when Tim stormed back in typical fashion and pushed me to a tiebreak. Was happy to avoid a 3rd set!"  -- David
Julian Langley bt Paolo Giua (Jan 18) Walkover
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Timothy Jones (Jan 11) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Following a tight first set, I went 5-1 up in the second, but knew that the match wasn’t over, especially against Tim. Sure enough he stormed back bringing the score to 5-5 and was unfortunate not to complete the comeback as I managed to grind out the win. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Brian O'neill (Jan 10) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Great to have Brian joining us in KB League Group 1. Although I had the upper hand in this encounter I definitely sense it could have been very different. There were occasions, particularly in the first set, when Brian's big lefty serve and thunderous forehand ripped past me, and so I'm relieved that they didn't quite end up firing on all cylinders. Throw in a handful of net cords that went in my favour, and the balance of the match just about tipped my way. Look forward to the next encounter."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Thomas Phillips (Jan 8) 2-6, 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Tom started on fire and stormed the first set - I couldn’t get close. I managed to get back in to the match in the second set. Then in a bizarre twist in the third, we had the longest game I have ever played - neither of us seemed to want to win it! In the end I managed to stumble through and the game proved decisive for the match."  -- Tom
Reveal CommentJulian Langley bt Timothy Jones (Jan 5) 6-0, 5-7, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Tim pretty much gave me the first set in under 15 mins, but started playing consistently in the second. His improved level was hard for me to adjust to after having such an easy first set and he deservedly won a tight second set. The last set had a few close early games which I took and I then secured a double break to win the match. "  -- Julian

Player Comments:

  • "There were some fantastically constructed points finished off with blistering winners from Julian today. Unfortunately, we ran out of time after an extremely close second set! Looking forward to hopefully finishing the match off before the end of the round. "  -- Tom
  • "Real 50/50 match that had to restarted a couple of weeks later at 4-4 in the third with Tom serving. I broke to love and had a shot at a makeable f hand to make it 40-0 and have three match points. However missed it and Tom broke straight back to 30. I broke again to serve for the match a second time but Tom fought back to 30-30 from 30-0. However this time I managed to take the first match point with a clean down the line winner to finally get my first match win in the league. Even more happy to do this after getting destroyed by Brian in the wind a couple of days before. tks to Tom for cycling down to my club in Catford, bring on the grass courts for the summer," -- Julian
Reveal CommentBrian O'neill bt Julian Langley (Dec 14) 6-1, 6-3

  • "Windy conditions again...the joys of winter tennis! Fair to say I probably adjusted better to the conditions...swirly wind didn't allow Julian to play his normal game. Next match will be closer I'm sure!"  -- Brian

I breezed through the first set and thoughts of being home out of the cold by 9pm were shattered when Ben stormed back to take the 2nd set, easily his serving and ground strokes all improved. Final set was super close and very entertaining, the win! Lights almost went out on match point, I was very happy to get the win!"  -- Marcos

Player Comments:

  • "Christmas shopping was put on the back burner this Saturday evening in South London as fans and revellers flocked to Burgess Park to grab a view of this mouth-watering contest. The canny carnivore, realising that pigs in blankets will be in short supply this Christmas, instead made a beeline for the tennis to get their fix on delicious seasonal treats. Excitement reached such a crescendo that after a couple of games the lights went pop, perhaps, on reflection, the fans trying to 'IG' every moment caused an electrical outage! No matter, the players and fans shifted over to the next court where Roberto brought out his box of tricks to entertain the masses with more shots than a Havana rum bar on a Friday night. Top work all - well played."  -- Edward
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Edward Hamill (Dec 2) 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (10-8)

Player Comments:

  • "An Epic battle with Ed as the score suggests! Despite the windy evening, we both played fairly consistent tennis with many long rallies throughout. Ed volleyed beautifully when he got to the net and won almost every point there. I relied on heavier ground strokes on from the baseline to win points. I was a set and 3 nil up in the second, credit to Ed for fighting back and taking that set int h breaker. The final set ebbed & flowed and I luckily held on to win the breaker this time. Thanks for a great game Ed!"  -- Marcos

Collapse AllKennington & Brockwell Parks Doubles - Round 26 | Thursday 3 October 2019 to Wednesday 11 December 2019 (Midpoint: Wednesday 6 November 2019)

23 matches were played in this round which was nearly half of the total possible. Given how hard it can be to get 4 people on the same court at the same time, that is no mean feat, especially at this time of year. Well done all!

Group Summary:

The tennis was definitely lighting up the gloomy weather with some good aggressive play and ding dong battles. David and James top the group, partly thanks to a walkover, but all credit, and bragging rights, to Rhys and Ben who beat them in the head to head.
