Revision information
Provide an explanation of the changes you are making. This will help other authors understand your motivations.

This is how it works:

  • Players are organised into groups of up to 8 people of a similar standard
  • Contact details are emailed
  • Players arrange their own matches
  • It is a mixed sex, singles league, so men and women play each other
  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!
  • We welcome beginners as well as advanced players.
  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level
  • Affiliated to the LTA For adults aged 18 years and above

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak
  • The evening before the round starts you will receive an email with all the contact details of the players in your group
  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Getting started

New players will need to complete the player questionnaire before they can join a round. Once you’ve signed up, and for returning players you can join any of the upcoming rounds above.

For everything you need to know before you get started see the FAQs and review the Rules and Regulations, which all players agree to adhere to when playing in the leagues.

If there is anything else you need help with get in contact with Nigel, Sally and the team who will be happy to help!

Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Christopher Bunstead (Jun 25) 6-2, 4-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Post - lunch battle in Larkhall, really an up and down affair on both sides. I was able to push through in the end despite a valiant come back from Chris in the second set which shook my confidence. "  -- David
Simon Wood bt Alexey Smirnov (Jun 24) 6-1, 6-3
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Tom Harvey (Jun 22) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A closely-fought and really enjoyable match, with a good standard of tennis throughout - including a number of extended baseline exchanges and some scintillating points. Momentum shifted several times in the first set; after going 3-0 up Tom pegged me back to 3-2 and then 4-4, before I managed to secure the decisive break. The second set was equally intense, with many of the early games going to deuce, and I just about managed to come out on the right side."  -- Timothy
Alexey Smirnov bt Nick Acton (Jun 21) 7-5, 6-4
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Christopher Bunstead (Jun 17) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "I knew I was in for another closely fought match against Chris when he aced me on the first point! It was a somewhat topsy-turvey match, with the lead frequently switching between us. After starting at a frantic pace, the heat took its toll towards the end of the first set. I thought I might have done enough with three break points at 3-2 in the second set, only for Chris to reel off 9 points in a row to save his break points and then break me to love! Some attritional rallies followed, with a single break just enough to see me over the finish line."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Tom Harvey (Jun 17) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Sweltering heat in Kennington Park, the main mission was to make it out without a heat stroke, which we both succeeded at. Good match though and much closer than the score would suggest. "  -- David
Simon Wood bt Nick Acton (Jun 13) 6-3, 6-2
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Alexey Smirnov (Jun 11) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "The virtuous feeling of an early start on a Saturday morning perhaps distracted both of us during the first set at a sunny Brockwell Park, neither of us particularly getting into much of a rhythm and many of the games going to multiple deuces. However, any slight rustiness on Alexey's part after his year away from the game evaporated entirely for a tight and keenly fought second set - which had Alexey lead 3-1 and then 4-2, before I fortunately managed to claw my way back via some lengthy rallies and competitive points. A really enjoyable game; I think we'll need to make sure we book 3 hours for our next meeting!"  -- Timothy
Christopher Bunstead bt Nick Acton (Jun 7) 6-2, 6-2
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Simon Wood (Jun 3) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A close match on a fantastic sunny day in Kennington Park. Both sets opened with 3-0 leads; me in the first and Simon in the second. But both sets were clawed back level with only a single break the difference. Some great hitting with long rallies. Looking forward to playing again soon. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentJamie Feldman bt Tom Harvey (May 30) 2-6, 6-1, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A really enjoyable game on a lovely warm evening in Burgess Park. The scoreline certainly doesn't reflect the closeness of the game, lasting the full two hours. Some really superb rallies and excellent passing shots. Looking forward to the next encounter. "  -- Jamie
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Alexey Smirnov (May 29) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a fun match from start to finish with a lot of hard hitting and long rallies, in really unusually humid conditions, we were both suffocating after a few games! With a solid groud strokes, Alexey can be a strong force in the group once he gets his game off following a year off. Got the better of him this time but looking forward to our next encounter. "  -- David
Reveal CommentChristopher Bunstead bt Tom Harvey (May 29) 2-6, 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "A good match with lots of winners and ambitious play shown and included my breaking strings on yet another racket and having to borrow one of Tom's in the 2nd set set which seemed to get me back in the match!" -- Chris
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt David Jovic (May 27) 6-1, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "After a buffeting wind prevented either of us from getting into any kind of rhythm in the first set, the improved conditions contributed to a much better tennis match in the second set. After remaining on serve for eight games, David's superior groundstrokes told in breaking me to lead 5-4. Fortunately I managed to claw the break back in the next game, and just about got over the line after that... which was perhaps just as well as I think a third set would have been an ambitious endurance test for us both!"  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Christopher Bunstead (May 26) 3-6, 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Great match where really it could have gone either way. Chris stormed to an early lead. Simon then just about held out in the 2nd after Chris came back from 1-5 to 4-5. 3rd set was tight at 3-all before Simon edged out victory," Simon
Jamie Feldman bt Nick Acton (May 23) 6-0, 6-0
David Jovic bt Jamie Feldman (May 20) 6-3, 7-6 (7-3)
Reveal CommentJamie Feldman bt Alexey Smirnov (May 14) 6-4, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "I was probably lucky to catch Alexey as the first match in the round after a year out of not playing. A killer serve and forehand combo had me on the ropes for much of the first set. I was lucky to pull out in front in the second thanks to one or two net cords. A great game."  -- Jamie

Player Comments:

  • "After having lost all 3 previous games again Marcos, including the last one in which I had 3 match points, I was determined to give everything to this match. The first set consisted of 8 breaks of serve out of 9 games, and my single hold was enough to take it 6-3. The second set was extremely tight with better serving from both and we ended up in a tiebreak. I held my nerve to get over the line. Overall a very fun match as always with Marcos"  -- Brendan

Attacking tennis and good rallies all game long!"  -- Marcos

  • "When the Burgess Park decided to re-lay the courts the fans were left dismayed as they had already bought their tickets for one of the most momentous tennis clashes of the year: Evans Vs Hamill. The crowd were left to hope and pray that the court would be ready for the occasion. Despite rumours of a Wembley style delay in construction, it was reported that the builders worked tirelessly to set the court for what was to be a battle of such proportions it wouldn't look out of place in a John Wayne movie! The court was finished, the capacity crowd arrived and even Mother Nature played her part by delivering the warmest day of the year and not a cloud in the sky. The tennis was simply electrifying and had the crowd rapturous, Well done to all!"  -- Edward

  • "What a terrific evening of tennis Tuesday night at Kennington Park was. With the balmy heat of a May day giving way to a glorious sunset followed by a perfectly still night it is easy to see why Blake found inspiration for his most famous writing - what has become known now as 'Jerusalem', On England's pleasant pastures seen! But enough of that, there was a game of tennis to be played! The crowds swelled, like the high tide of the River Thames, to a capacity crowd as the good people of South London were all in agreement that Kennington Park - court 5 was the place to be. With long rallies, deuces and even a cheeky ace or two the players did not disappoint and showed once again how live sport is at the zenith of entertainment. Well played!"  -- Edward

  • "Wow, what a game. 2 1/2 hours tennis in 20+ degrees. I still can't work out how I managed to win. About 10 deuces in the first 2 games was a sign of things to come and Susanna won both of those and went on to win the first set quite comfortably despite some close games. Susanna took an early lead in the second set and was so consistent on both sides I was forced to play more attacking. This paid some dividends though Susanna still seemed to be able to lob me at will. In the third set we were both tired but Susanna took 3-1 and 4-2 leads. I managed to get the drop shots working which helped me get over the line and we were both shattered at the end. At least I was!"  -- Paul

Reveal CommentPatrick Mullen bt Ben Walker (Jun 13) 6-4, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "A tight and incredibly enjoyable game. I feel Ben deserved better in this 2 hour battle of attrition, and I think it's fair to say he played most of the tennis in the countless rallies and battles that were had throughout the game. Having had a slow start, Ben came back from 5-0 down in the first set to 5-4. He had to break once more to level the score, but fortune fell my way, and the set was closed out before the hour mark at 6-4. A rather different story played out in the second set, with a break each the score was tied at 4-4. Ben broke again to make it 4-5 and after some incredibly defensive play from myself—dare I call it cynical—and some momentous rallies, I held out to the tiebreak before the last point was played at exactly 10pm"  -- Patrick

First two sets were played at Vauxhall on 5 June (not recommended, the courts are bumpy and the lines need repainting) under cold and wet conditions. The first set was played under a light drizzle, but by the second set it the rain was heavy and there were puddles on the courts, but we kept going and played out the second set before resuming the third set at Archbishop's Park under hot, sunny weather conditions. Great lesson in learning how to play under different conditions."  -- Benedict

Collapse AllKennington & Brockwell Parks Doubles - Round 18 | Thursday 30 March 2017 to Wednesday 7 June 2017 (Midpoint: Wednesday 3 May 2017)

Thanks to everyone for their efforts in this round, we know it can be difficult to get doubles matches arranged so it was great to see a good number of matches played. Hope to see you next time for more tennis in the summer months!

Group Summary:

There was nothing to choose between the top three as they all recorded two wins to finish level on four points. Crucially Christopher & Alexander's victories were over their title rivals and this sees them sneak onto the top of the podium. Unfortunately we didn't see a head to head between Katrin & Adam and Luke & Edward, but even after we have done some calculations there is still nothing to separate the two as both conceded the same number of sets and games! So we flip a coin and it is Katrin & Adam who emerge with the luck to take second.

Final Rankings:

  1. Christopher Smith & Alexander Lewis Marffy [W2] 4 WINNER
  2. Katrin Nitsche & Adam Leake [W2, L1] 4 RUNNER UP
  3. Luke Abnett & Edward Hamill [W2, L1] 4

Player Comments:

  • "The class and quality of this game couldn't fit into 1 night so it was played across 2 nights in total. This allowed even more fans than usual to drink in the spectacle on offer. And what a spectacle it was! The tedium of everyday life was left at the door in this match as the players delved deep into their arsenals to salvage some moments of pure magic and tenacity that only doubles seems to create. These moments were watched by a capacity crowd that ooohd and aaaahd at the quality of serving, slicing and volleying that was on show. The rain threatened on the second night but even Zeus (amongst other things the Greek God of rain) didn't dare interfere too much and allowed the earthly players to lap up the applause of an adoring crowd!"  -- Edward
