  • You can play on any court that suits both players

The league is:

  • For everybody!

  • Don't worry that you won't be good enough - playing matches is the best way to improve, and we use an online questionnaire to assess people's ability so you play only people of a roughly similar level

Key points

  • Matches are best of three sets; if a set reaches 6 games all it is decided by a tiebreak

  • Players are placed in groups according to past performance in the league and, for new players, their Player Standard Questionnaire
  • Each player attempts to play each of the other player on their group once during the round
  • If you complete three matches before the midpoint of a round you receive 2 bonus points and a bonus prize (either a pair of Local Tennis Leagues dampeners, or a tube of tennis balls).
  • The winner of the group is the player with the most points at the end of the round
  • The winner of the group wins a certificate and tennis prizes
  • Where possible, winners of groups are promoted to the group above for the next round.

Collapse AllKennington & Brockwell Parks Singles - Round 43 | Thursday 7 December 2017 to Wednesday 14 February 2018 (Midpoint: Wednesday 10 January 2018)

Almost two thirds of all matches were played during this round and it was clear that some very enjoyable and high quality tennis was played; the lovely comments between players show that this league is a great one to be in and that the competitive spirit is live and kicking in Kennington!

Group Summary:

It was a tightly fought contest between the top 3 players with only 2 points separating them. Timothy was our clear winner though as he was undefeated in all of his 6 matches, so well done for some excellent tennis! Second place was between Marcos and David and as they finished on an equal amount of points it came down to their head to head which Marcos won in an epic 3 setter. Marcos kept taking an early lead in the sets but David kept battling back only for Marcos to find his extra gear to close it out for the win. Welcome back Christopher to the leagues! Every match had a lovely comment here, it is clearly a lovely group to be in with very friendly people!

Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Simon Wood (Feb 7) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Having lost my recent encounters against Simon, I knew I was in for a tough test - and this battle didn’t disappoint. The 1st set lasted 57 minutes and the 2nd set took 59 minutes, with each point hotly contested and seemingly every game having multiple deuces. Received wisdom is that the seventh game of a set is the most important, but for us it was the eighth game - in both sets Simon deservedly led by a break and had points for 5-3, but I scraped through by the skin of my teeth. The rallies were shattering at times, disrupted only by Simon’s pinpoint drop-shots. We really will have to set aside 3 hours (and a day of post-match recovery) next time!"  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Marcos Fernandez (Feb 4) 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "To be completed next week....."  -- Marcos
  • "Following an epically long first set, which had multiple momentum swings, we were unable to finish the match in the two hour court booking (even with Marcos running away with the second set). The third set was resumed on a freezing Sunday morning; one of those days when the balls feel like they are frozen solid. Marcos optimistically went for the shorts and t-shirt combo which may have been his main tactical era as luckily for me he seemed to struggle to warm up into the match and reproduce his impressive form from the second set. A fun match with some good hitting, however I really can't wait for the weather to warm up a bit!"  --Tom
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt David Jovic (Feb 3) 6-1, 5-7, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A light drizzle didn't aid the tennis today, however we managed to have a close fought match with some good rallies. The second set in particular stands out, as David stormed the set from 5-3 down, saving a match point and ripping a number of straight winners to get back into the match. We finished just as the rain set in. Hopefully next time we play the conditions are a bit more favourable! "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Tom Harvey (Jan 31) 7-6 (7-5), 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A great game versus Tom on a cold January evening. The first set was a close affair with Tom storming into a 4-1 leave with some strong hitting to the corners. I eventually found my range and managed to sneak the 1st set on the tiebreak. The second set was closer than the score suggested but I managed to keep my consistency to get me through. "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Christopher Bunstead (Jan 31) 6-3, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "An enjoyable, hard-fought match played on a cold January evening under the bright Super Blue Moon. The contest was characterised by lengthy baseline rallies, with solid ball-striking from both of us. Chris was playing really well after his competitive break at the end of last year. The first set seemed to hinge on a long game at 4-3 that included multiple deuces and opportunities for both of us to win it. Chris' powerful play saw him go 3-0 up in the second set, and I was very relieved to have hung in the games just long enough to edge it at the end."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Christian Jaccarini (Jan 28) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Played on the newer court at Archbishops which is in excellent condition. Seems like Chris' pratice session with Tom has helped him get his rhythm back and it showed as there were plenty of good rallies and winners on both sides during a fun match. We ecen stayed on for a third set."  -- David
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Tom Harvey (Jan 27) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really enjoyable encounter against Tom with loads of great rallies and winners. The first set was full of framed shots and lucky net cords (all from me) which prevented Tom from getting into any kind of rhythm. By contrast the second set better reflected the tennis being played, with an early exchange of breaks amid some great points. The end of set was attritional - Tom saved match points with fearless attacking tennis, and it was a relief to get over the finish line. To top it all off, we even managed to sneak in a bonus set before the rain came."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Christian Jaccarini (Jan 18) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Everything seemed to go my way today with a number of framed shots fortuitously going in for straight winners. This didn't help Chris find any rhythm but he still managed to hit a number of thumping ground strokes! We had a great hit after the match and I look forward to playing again soon. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Christopher Bunstead (Jan 14) 7-5, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Fun match, lots of rallies, was lucky to claw back into the 1st set and pull away just in time in the 2nd. Pretty even alltogether in a competitive league. "  -- David

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentJamie Feldman bt Simon Wood (Jan 14) 6-4, 1-6, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A real topsy turvy game with Simon (welcome back!) where neither of us managed to play well at the same time! I quickly went into a 4-1 lead in the first set and Simon very cleverly got back into the game with some really class tennis. The first set was tight. The second set was anything but - going 1-0 up, Simon went on the rampage and won 6 games in a row, knocking me sideways. I managed to get my composure back for the third set and just about saw it through. Great game. "  -- Jamie
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt David Jovic (Jan 13) 4-6, 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A great battle with David until the very end. We both seemed to play well when we needed so couldnt pull away from each other as the score shows. I went 5-2 up in the second and David battled back to 5-5. Had I lost the next game, he would have served for the match but i managed to hold and break to level the match. Again I managed to go 5-2 in the final set and again David battled back to 5-4 and fought off multiple match points before I finally took one. Great game as always! "  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Christopher Bunstead (Jan 10) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Having seen 3 set points in a row disappear in the first set as Chris masterfully played his way back into the match, I was relieved to stagger over the line and eventually take the set. Some extremely close games in the second could have gone either way and isn't fairly reflected in the final score. A fun match with some good hitting and a number of clean winners! Look forward to playing again next time. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Marcos Fernandez (Jan 8) 6-4, 0-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "What. A. Contest. Our matches are always closely-fought affairs, and this was one of those you just wish could have gone on and on (although perhaps not from an exhaustion point of view!). A tight first set was settled by a single break, but in the second set Marcos was untouchable - winner after winner hitting line after line. The start of the third set was the zenith, both of us playing strong tennis and every game having several deuces. Fortunately momentum just swung in my direction at the end, but who knows what a fourth and fifth set might have brought?!"  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Jamie Feldman (Jan 7) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Solid tennis throughout on a bitterly cold and windy morning. I was able to hang on in the first set despite Jamie's usual barrage of forehand winners and survived through a topsy turvy 2nd set, probably as I was the one with the hat to counter the unexpected sunrays...."  -- David
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt David Jovic (Jan 6) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A cracking match to kick off 2018. As ever, a hard-fought and even harder-won battle against David, who raced into a lead in the first set with a string of irretrievable groundstrokes. Fortunately I managed to get a foothold, and momentum began turning in my favour after a brutally long seventh game. Not much between us in the second set either, remaining competitive until the very last point. "  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Christopher Bunstead (Jan 6) 6-3, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Played on a beautiful crisp cold morning at GMH Park, overall this was a good match with many games going to deuce. A topsy turvey first set which shifted from me being 2 love up to then being 3-2 down as Chris started to find his range. Eventually I managed to take the set 6-3. 2 breaks a piece at the start of set before I eventually held to go 4-2 up. Chris then started playing more aggressively and cleaned the line on a number of occasions, but consistency saw me through in the end 6-2. "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Simon Wood (Jan 4) 7-5, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Great match against Simon! Literally nothing between us in the first set, there was no break of service until 5-5 when i managed to do so in a tight game to go 6-5 up. Even then I needed 3/4 set points before I held to talk the first set. I raced into a 4-0 lead in the second but Simon dug deep and battled well to get back into the match winning the next 3 games. Simon's double handed backhand did damage to me all night, could only admire many winners and wish I had that shot! 4-3 up but having lost 3 in a row I knew I had to stop his momentum and in a very tight and long 8th game I managed to break to go 5-3. I was able to serve it out at this point thankfully. Look forward to our match up!"  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Simon Wood (Dec 23) 6-0, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Got off to a lopsided start as Simon struggled to get in rythm but he was able to make it very competitive in the second with the ususal array of accurate ground strokes. I nearly avoided what would have probably been a fatal 3rd set and was able to narrowly escape with the win. "  -- David
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Christian Jaccarini (Dec 19) 6-1, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Less than ideal conditions in Burgess Park, the court had slippy icy patches to begin with and as it got colder and later in the night it almost became an ice rink. Unfortunately this lead to tentative tennis with Chris with neither of us willing to run very much. Look forward to a better game with Chris next time, his big serve and ground strokes look impressive for sure. Happy Christmas everyone!"  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Christopher Bunstead (Dec 16) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Not the easiest reintroduction to Group 1 for Chris on a cold icy morning in mid December after not playing for months. Usually we go to 3 sets and it's always tough. Check out Chris's new range of tennis balls though....Souler....not a bad bounce in sight!! Look forward to our next game!"  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Christian Jaccarini (Dec 16) 6-1, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The layer of frost on top of the increasingly mossy Kennington Park courts meant that at times we were closer to skating than running during rallies. Slipping and sliding was a frequent occurrence, including on incredible point in which Chris recovered from a near-fall to chase down a lob and hit a clean winner. It felt like nearly every game went to deuce, with Chris hitting some big aces and irretrievable forehands. Very much looking forward to playing again in more sure-footed conditions! "  -- Timothy

Group Summary:

There was nothing separating the points between the top 2 players, Luke and Edward, but it was Luke who managed to win their head to head match which secured him the win! It was even more impressive that he had come back from a break from our leagues whilst also preventing Edward from doing the double after Edward came first place in Group 5 last round. Welcome Callum and Jan to the league! Some in this group struggled to organise matches so please do let us know if there is anything we can do to help for the next round so that you can meet and play more people in your group!

Player Comments:

  • "February 4th 2018. Burgess Park Tennis Centre. 4pm. Those details were enough to draw a crowd that ran into the thousands for this game. And quite frankly, where else would you want to be on a Sunday afternoon? Pottering about in the garden? Doing some DIY? Out shopping? Catch yourself on! Get down and see two magicians on the tennis court instead. Clearly this was what the majority of South London thought as well as tickets for this one were sold out in minutes and the touts were out in force on Camberwell Road. The tennis on show was so delicious it made a Jamie's Italian look a bit run of the mill and very ordinary. The pair traded forehand winners like they were going out of date and everyone was most certainly entertained. Well played."  -- Edward

Reveal CommentEdward Hamill bt Callum Hudson (Jan 29) 6-2, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "With events at the Australian Open reaching their end at the weekend, naturally the eyes of the tennising world turned to Kennington Park. And those eyes were not disappointed in the slightest. These 2 players rose to the challenge with aplomb like a mountain goat scaling the highest peak. Yes it might be in the middle of winter but the tennis on show was doing it's bit to warm up a capacity crowd that was packed in to Kennington Park court 3 like sardines. The first set saw some fantastic rallies as both players shuttled from side to side, resembling a bleep test, only this looked much harder, meanwhile in the second set the athletes pulled off some winners with angles that an isosceles triangle would be jealous of! Great game, well played"  -- Edward

Player Comments:

  • "Thursday night brought the eagerly anticipated match between Shanks and Hamill. And just like Storm Eleanor this match blew a whirlwind through South London and left a lasting impression on those lucky enough to be a member of the partisan crowd that assembled to bathe in the glory that is January tennis. The court at Kennington was up to its old tricks too. To say watching the two players resembled Bambi on ice would be a gross understatement. The players gingerly scampered across the court as though they were playing a real life game of minesweeper only with some cracking serves and forehands thrown in for good measure. Andy's drop shot was particularly effective as it was better disguised than Lenin in the October Revolution. Well played"  -- Edward
Reveal CommentLuke Abnett bt Edward Hamill (Jan 3) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Despite cyclonic conditions (a whirling funnel of leaves crossed the court mid-point at one stage) a high quality contest with fine returning responsible for more breaks of serve than the wind. Great match Ed!"  -- Luke
Andy Shanks bt Callum Hudson (Dec 16) 6-0, 6-2
Reveal CommentEdward Hamill bt Thomas Odulate (Dec 9) 5-7, 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "People always say we want quality, not quantity. Well the two players today asked: 'why not both?' That's right Group 2 has started with a bang, the kind of bang that even Krakatoa would get jealous of. Despite the sub zero temperatures the crowds flocked to Brockwell Park court 5 on a morning so beautiful that Vincent Van Gogh himself would have struggled to capture the charm. Attendance is believed to have been a record for a game at Brockwell Park, yet to be confirmed. The tennis on show was pure class. Returning Thomas' serve is like trying to spread butter with a single blade of grass - tricky. Not to mention his backhand which rears its head like an angry meerkat but makes the ball find the line as if it were a homing missile. Played."  -- Edward

Group Summary:

This was an extremely closely matched group with just 2 points separating the top 3 players. In the end it was undefeated Alex that secured the win with 5 wins from his 5 matches. Player Comments:

  • "Andrew has an unconventional or unorthodox style of tennis, but it's very effective, and moreover, difficult to read," Joseph

Player Comments:

  • "Joseph is a solid player and a lovely guy. He didn't find his rhythm today as he wanted but played great serves and slices."  -- Jack
Andrew Dick bt Sam Ashken (Dec 20) 7-6 (7-5), 6-2
Jack Holden bt George Bromley-Davenport (Dec 20) 6-2, 7-5
Reveal CommentGeorge Bromley-Davenport bt Susannah Ward (Dec 17) 6-3, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Braving the elements early on Sunday morning, Susannah and I were extremely fortunate with the weather, which was foul for most of the weekend. Surprisingly, it was serving into the sun rise that proved a real challenge in the early stages. The first four games went against serve as we continued to loosen up. I managed to break away to 5-2 and overcome a final surge by Susannah to take the set 6-3. The second set felt closer than the score line suggests and the game as a whole was well contested. I look forward to playing Susannah again in future league matches. "  -- George
Andrew Dick bt Susannah Ward (Dec 9) 6-0, 6-0

Group Summary:

There was no doubt about our winner in this group which was undefeated Jack who also managed to get his bonus points along the way so well done on your fantastic effort put in to this round! Mike and Nikos are the only ones who managed to win a set off Jack and could have well stopped the winner in his tracks but Jack prevailed. Well done to our runner up John who managed to secure 3 wins, some more bonus points earned in this group would have made it even closer!

Reveal CommentJohn Macdonald bt Julius Sukarevicius (Feb 12) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "This was a match played over 2 days, a few weeks apart. It would be great to play against Julius again as he was struggling with a back injury and I think the scoreline would have been much different had he been completely match fit. "  -- John
Reveal CommentJohn Macdonald bt Joel Richardson (Feb 11) 6-2, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Two words to describe this match: cold, windy. Freezing more like it, but some very good rallies when the wind died down. Good fun. "  -- John
Reveal CommentJohn Macdonald bt Nikos Asimakopoulos (Feb 4) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Very nice day for a match on an almost deserted Kennington Park. It's a good thing as the air was turned blue at times by both of us as the result of frustration at some spectacularly wild shots. This is the second time we've played, with Nikos coming out on top last time. Slightly fewer unforced errors and more consistent serving made the difference today. Fun match."  -- John
Reveal CommentMike Begent bt John Macdonald (Jan 29) 6-0, 5-7, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "This was a weird one... Having both played the day before tiredness was a definite factor for each of us, John's big top-spinning serve wasn't quite firing in the first set, and I was using up all my energy to keep ontop of things, resulting in a quick first set. Set two looked like a more even affair from the scoreline but had some swings of momentum, with John almost going 5-2 up, before I fought back, only for John to hold out and take the set. Set 3 carried on in a similar vein, with the score yo-yoing 2-0, 2-4, 6-4. Yet another match proving what a mental game this is!"  -- Mike
Mike Begent bt Nikos Asimakopoulos (Jan 28) 6-1, 6-1
Reveal CommentJack Bayley bt John Macdonald (Jan 15) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "An unseasonably forgiving surface on the Kennington Park courts was definitely not reflected in the play. With only one game not going to deuce in the opening set this match was a pitched battle from start to end. Slides, smashes, passing shots, net battles and deuce after deuce after deuce; this was a very closely contested meet in which the second set score line does not reflect the run of play. A great game. "  -- Jack
Reveal CommentJulius Sukarevicius bt Nikos Asimakopoulos (Jan 14) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "On a dry and relatively warm winter Sunday afternoon we had a closer match than the score suggests. We started well with long rallies and some great shots from both sides as we reached 3:3. As both of us quickly ran out of breath, soon unforced error started popping up. Luck was clearly on my side today - after saving a number of break points and winning the key deuce games, I was happy to have finished the match in just 2 sets. "  -- Julius
Reveal CommentJack Bayley bt Nikos Asimakopoulos (Jan 9) 6-4, 3-6, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Another exciting match on Kennington Park ice rink! This exciting three setter was accompanied by drizzle, slides-galore, a fall and a police raid, what more could you ask for? Oh and the tennis was great too, some great shots and impressive service games all contributed to an entertaining battle against each other and the elements. "  -- Jack
Elinor Wakefield bt John Macdonald (Jan 7) 6-4, 7-6 (8-6)
Elinor Wakefield bt Julius Sukarevicius (Jan 6) 2-6, 6-0, 6-2
Reveal CommentJack Bayley bt Julius Sukarevicius (Jan 5) 6-3, 0-6, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Well, this one was all about momentum. Momentum and the treacherous winter surface on the Kennington courts. Even with the balance tipping so wildly this was a closely contested match with the plenty of close games and som great shots. The less said about the footwork the better. :)"  -- Jack
Reveal CommentJoel Richardson bt Julius Sukarevicius (Dec 15) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4)

Player Comments:

  • "On a cold wet night, this was a great match - evenly fought in tricky conditions, the second set in particular was agonisingly close, with a number games going to multiple deuces before being decided. Shame about the weather!"  -- Joel

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentJack Bayley bt Mike Begent (Dec 12) 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "What a match! Swings of momentum, epic shots, tumbles on both sides of the net deuce points galore and even a little snow all made for an incredible game of tennis under the Kennington floodlights. This is what the winter rounds are all about. "  -- Jack
