Group Summary:

In a group where it seems anyone could beat anyone it couldn't have been any tighter at the top with Timothy, David and Marcos all tied on nine points and no way of separating the three through head to heads. A trip to the rule book was therefore in order and after several calculations it all comes down to who conceded the fewest sets on average per match played.....and the title goes to Timothy with David finishing second and Marcos third - round of applause to you all!

Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Marcos Fernandez (Feb 5) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Despite the miserable conditions, really fun match against Marcos with an uncertain outcome all the way til the end, we were both able to feed off each other's pace with his sliced backhand giving me some trouble as per usual. I tried to stay away from his strong flat forehand as much as possible as fatigue settled in and prevailed in the end behind some decent serviing. Look forward to the next encounter"  -- David

Player Comments:

  • "Epic and very enjoyable match with tonnes of winners. We ran out of time and the game was on a knife edge at 5-4, 30-15 in the 3rd set so anything could have happened. Perhaps a draw was the right result!"  -- Christopher
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt David Jovic (Feb 4) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "With Group 1 proving very tasty at the moment - anyone being able to beat anyone else on their day - it's certainly important to get off to a good start in a match. I was fortunate in this respect, my earlier match against Adrian meaning that I had already had some helpful court time, and as such I managed to get the better of the opening exchanges against David. This momentum stayed with me (boosted by lucky net cords and other good fortune) and it carried me through to the end."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Adrian Britton (Feb 4) 6-2, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "Starting later than planned after a 45-minute rain delay, and with the water from the courts quickly making the balls heavy, this was a tricky set-up for both players. Adrian's characteristic game presented a constant challenge, with lots of acute angles, changes in length and long rallies across both of the sets. I was fortunate enough to come out the right side of several deuces in the first set, and just about carried that momentum through the second set too."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Andy Shanks (Feb 1) 6-1, 6-0

Player Comments:

  • "An odd match in very unfavourable conditions - windy, slippy and with full-glare floodlights. The first set was far closer than the scoreline suggests, with many games going to deuce. However, it was clear that I was lucky enough to have come up against an out-of-sorts Andy who (fortunately for me) didn't seem to find his rhythm - no doubt impacted by the injury he was carrying. I look forward to our next match, hopefully in much nicer conditions!"  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentAndy Shanks v Adrian Britton (Jan 30) 7-5, 4-6 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "Adrian and I didn't manage to finish our match, after the 4th time I slipped over we postponed playing on which is the story of this league for me with 3 unfinished matches in the wet conditions. A draw seems like a fair result as I won the first and Adrian was clear ahead in the second. "  -- Andy
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic v Andy Shanks (Jan 28) 6-4, 5-7, 2-3 TBC

Player Comments:

  • "Unfortunately we ran out of time on this one and won't have a chance to finish it before the end of the round. Whoever would have come out on top would have been deserving though. Andy did well to get back into the game in the second set and as usual rallies lasted ages and several games went to multiple deuces. A close one as usual...."  -- David
Reveal CommentChristopher Bunstead bt Tom Harvey (Jan 23) 6-2, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "A good match not reflected properly in the score line with Tom regularly destroying my second serve on a slippery and misty night at kennington park "  -- Christopher
Andy Shanks bt Christopher Bunstead (Jan 22) 6-4, 3-6, 6-1
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Adrian Britton (Jan 21) 6-0, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "The match was a lot closer than the score suggests. A number of very tight games that went to deuce at the end of the first set and the beginning of the second could have put a completely different spin on the match. Look forward to playing again some time soon. "  -- Tom
Andy Shanks bt Marcos Fernandez (Jan 19) 6-3, 6-2
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Christopher Bunstead (Jan 18) 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6)

Player Comments:

  • "A tough night in freezing cold conditions against Chris who beat me easily last time around. The first set was was over in no time, I could find no rhythm as he attacked and took the ball earlier than me. His ground strokes are solid & I could't read his forehand. 6 love down and no answers. I knew I had to get my game going asap or this would be over embarrassingly early so went for percentage shots for a while until I got confident again. This seemed to work as I raced 3-0 up & closed out the 2nd set 6-2. I started the 3rd set strongly too & went 5-2 up but fluffed 2 match points & half an hour later I was 6-5 down. Chris went 5-3 up in the tie-break but I fought back to win 8-6. Top Finish to a game! "  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Tom Harvey (Jan 16) 6-3, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "A really tightly-matched and closely-fought contest; it felt like nearly every game went to deuce. A certain amount of match sharpness was missing following the Christmas break, but that didn't stop some super baseline exchanges - and some sumptuous single-handed backhand passing shots from Tom. I was definitely fortunate with a number of net cords, otherwise the result would have looked very different. Great to be able to stay on and hit further after the match, and look forward to playing again soon."  -- Timothy
Reveal CommentAdrian Britton bt Christopher Bunstead (Jan 14) 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3)

Player Comments:

  • "Great match with lots of momentum shifts throughout the 3 sets. Having lost a 3 - 0 lead in the final set i was relieved to finally take the match in a third set tie break. "  -- Adrian
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Adrian Britton (Jan 8) 6-2, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "As usual it is quite a workout playing against Adrian and seemingly I felt I was moving vertically more than horizontally along the baseline for much of the match. Ended up being a fair number of long rallies in this affair and after a few nervous moments in the second set which saw Adrian pull out to a 3-0 Lead, I was able to hold on for the victory. "  -- David
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Tom Harvey (Jan 7) 6-1, 2-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Not the best conditions today, a wet slippy court didn't lend itself to a good game but in the end it was very entertaining for sure. Tom is a welcome addition to Group 1, a good battler and strong off both sides. The slippy court definitely affected him more than me as he slide into most of shots out wide. The first set was easy enough for me and the second Tom ran away with, the final set set was closer than score for sure with most games going to multiple deuces. I was happy to come away with the win with about one minute to spare! "  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Christopher Bunstead (Dec 18) 6-3, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "Happy to come out on top this time following last round's slippery affair at Larkhall Park. Chris was a tad more inconsistant and seemed to miss the baseline by a few inches time and time again. I was able to take advantage of this but the score is not an accurate reflection of the amount of long rallies that we played. "  -- David
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Timothy Jones (Dec 18) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Fourth time lucky today to record a first win against Tim. Tim was definitely below par today and didn't rally with his usual depth and accuracy allowing me to attack much more easily. A key game was when I was 2-1 up in the second, it went to about 10 deuces and I think if he had of broken me there and leveled at 2-2 it would have been a close second set. But a set ahead and 3-1 up with a break, I was confident of seeing out the set. Tim did battle back to 3-3 and the rallies were getting longer and the errors creeping in to my game (with the light fading and no sign of floodlights coming on) but I managed to finish strongly. Very happy with this win and look forward to playing Tim again."  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Tom Harvey (Dec 17) 6-1, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to see some new faces and Tom should fit right into a competitive group 1 with his solid groudstrokes. A typical Kennington League 1 racket malfunction forced him to use my backup racket which was not ideal and compounded by a slip and subsequent scrape on his knee. Altogether I was able to hang on in a competitive second set and we even were able to knock around after the match!"  -- David
Andy Shanks v Tom Harvey (Dec 11) 6-1, 6-7 (3-7) TBC
Marcos Fernandez bt Adrian Britton (Dec 10) 6-2, 6-1

Group Summary:

Wow it doesn't get much closer than this...Jamie, Samuel and Neil all finish on nine points with three wins and bonus points. There was no separating the players when considering their heads to heads either so we had to turn to several calculations. After some number crunching it is Samuel that tops the group due to fewest number of sets conceded per match played with Jamie following in second and Neil third - well played all!

A real topsy turvy game against a very good opponent. A thoroughly enjoyable game. Sam certainly had me on the hook at 5-3 and I think I was very fortunate to get back into the game. Great stuff and cant wait to play against Sam again"  -- Jamie

Player Comments:

  • "This was a nip and tuck match on a very cold night in Kennington. After getting a 5-0 lead in the first set I missed two set points, and thought Neil was going to pull it back, but at 5-2, 15-40 I managed to string a few first serves together to take the first set. Neil has a ferocious forehand which started really firing in the second set, and I struggled to make any impact on his serve, just about holding onto my own until the 9th game when I broke, and then held on for the win. I felt a bit lucky as I definitely wasn't the better player in the second set and it could easily have gone the other way - very much looking forward to a rematch! "  -- Samuel

Player Comments:

  • "An excellent match in blustery conditions. Nick kept me on the back foot for most of the match. It looked as though he would run away with the second set but I managed to turn it around. We ran out of time and so had to play a championship tiebreak to finish it off. Great match"  -- Brendan

Group Summary:

Wonderful commitment from group three with all but one match played - great effort everyone! It was a close call at the top with only one point separating positions one to four. Callum finishes with an impressive unbeaten record with five wins from five matches but crucially he didn't combine this with good scheduling skills. Guy did however and his two bonus points proved decisive as he leapfrogged Callum into pole position.

Player Comments:

  • "Quite an unbelievable match with long and exhausting rallies throughout. The first game really set the tone of the match, as my serve went to deuce about 4-5 times, followed by Callum's service game which again went the distance and repeated deuces. Was barely a moment to catch breath! Callum really took charge of the first set after the first 2 games, playing some lovely points that would hit the baseline from height and i struggled to handle them. The second set was very competitive as Callum went 5-3 up with match point, but i managed to persevere and grab the set back taking it to a third set. Two hours into the match we kicked off the third set which was as nail biting as the last. A well deserved win and look forward to playing again

Player Comments:

  • "The setting was a cold dark wintery evening in Clapham Common. From the offset it was clear that this would be a long night with the first set neck and neck all the way through with most games ending in a never ending deuce. The second set was dominated by Julian and his devilish backhand slice, cruising to a 6-1 slamming. Despite taking a lead in the third set, it looked like a classic Murray choking moment when Guy double faulted on match point at 5-1, but just about managed to see it through. An epic match."  -- Guy

Felt like a really well balanced match throughout with some great shots on both sides, but having also played yesterday in my match against Julian I felt my consistency and overall game improve today and was able to grab hold of the important points. Even my serving seemed on better form today, and that probably also helped me just get over the winning line in this match. Thanks very much for the game and well played."  -- James

Group Summary:

Congratulations to Edward who completed a full house as he recorded six straight victories and two bonus points to boot to take the title in style. This was not without a battle though and the match between the top two in particular didn't disappoint. There was little to choose between Edward and Ohad after the first two sets and this continued into the third with only a tiebreak being able to separate the two, and it was Edward who held his nerve to come through this marathon. Thanks for all the entertaining commentaries!

  • "A thoroughly enjoyable battle, where Jack so nearly took the second with a beautiful shot that was just out. Jack is swift around the court and had lots of stylish winning shots. I managed to pull the nail biter tie break around in the end and clinch the win on this lovely mild sunny day. FYI Kennington charge £8 p/hour due to floodlights, but we were daytime players so poor value. Courts could do with fresh lines and the balls end in in a wet gutter pitch side of court. Wouldn't be my favourite, although if you need the floodlights then try it."  -- Maurice

  • "I'm just going to take a little space to first applaud Ed on his incredible commentary. I often am intrigued as to how the other matches played out and Ed's commentary almost takes you there. I'd say this was probably one of the most enjoyable matches I've played with both of us evenly matched. I'm so thankful this game didn't go to a third set as after all the 20+ shot rallies, and the never-ending deuce battles for breaking serves, I was well and truly knackered. "  -- Ian

  • "Rivalries are what makes sport so fantastic to watch, Fischer Vs Spassky, Prost Vs Senna and Brother Vs Sister to name a few. Mcparland Vs Hamill can be added to this illustrious list. This was another mere instalment in what is turning out to be a battle of epic proportions that the Trojans and Greeks would be proud of. Myatt's Fields is a most picturesque battlefield, a sleepy backwater of South London that held a capacity crowd, who, knowing it was FA cup 3rd round weekend, knew this was the only place for competitive sporting action in London. Dogs encircled the court like piranhas around a small mammal - distracting indeed, however, it will take more than that to distract Maurice's metronomic accuracy! Great game, well played."  -- Edward

Player Comments:

  • "Despite the temperature dipping perilously close to freezing, crowds flocked to Kennington Park to witness this eagerly anticipated Group 6 match. The quality of the tennis on show was outstanding throughout, fans marvelled at the slices, drop shots and lobs on show with many exclaiming they hadn't been so entertained since watching the Hoff in his prime on Knight Rider. At the end of the first set Boris Becker, Sue Barker and Tim Henman (who were commentating on the game for BBC - available on iPlayer soon), agreed that 6-1 did not reflect Jack's endeavour in the first set. With the fans screaming for more the quality only ramped up and like a fine wine, or Hugh Laurie, the match got better with age finishing with a high class tie break."  -- Edward

  • "McEnroe Vs Borg, Wimbledon Final 1980, Federer Vs Nadal, Wimbledon Final 2008, Yogev Vs Hamill, Burgess Park 2016. When they come to write the history of the greatest tennis matches ever to be played these will most certainly feature prominently. Although probably in reverse order. Let me get this straight, this is without doubt one of the greatest tennis matches ever to be played! Ohad's precision and placement in his shots is mesmeric and his percentages must have been astronomical. At times it felt like I was playing against a brick, no, a titanium wall exacting its revenge on me. By the end of the game you could hear a pin drop in the stadium as the tension was ramped up and the fans had no nails left to chew! Great game, well played."  -- Edward

Player Comments:

  • "Battersea Park, what a place to play tennis! Easily the most beautiful setting on the South London circuit. In keeping with the setting Isabelle produced some glorious tennis, the likes of which left the fans, who had migrated over from the athletics track, pleading for more. Whether it was producing a masterful lob or a precise pass down the line, Isabelle made coming to the net the equivalent of a Gladiator turning up to the Colosseum... Fraught with danger. The weather - a weird yet persistent fine rain/haze/mist made the game a little more aquatic than how the forefathers of our great sport envisioned, however, they would have been very proud of the skill and tenacity shown on court. The crowd certainly seemed to love the contest!"  -- Edward

  • "What better way to start the week than with a bit of tennis? Our match was scheduled to be on court 5, however, the groundsman made a late switch to shift us onto court 4. The expectant fans were worried they wouldn't make it from one court to the other in time for the beginning of play, however, the man and his dog who turned up to see this momentous clash managed to make the transition (walking 5 yards) with time to spare. And boy were they glad they came to watch! Elinor put on an exhibition of how to return serve. No sooner had I served the ball when it was already back at my feet where I would have needed a shovel rather than a racket to dig it out! Andre Agassi himself would have been proud of those returns. Great game, well played."  -- Edward

  • "Thursday night saw the opening game for group 6 and the anticipation of the fans was most certainly met. The conditions meant that the court resembled more of an ice rink, however, not to worry as Ian and I set to our task with brave resolve that Ernest Shackleton himself would have been proud! Ian's movement across the court is superb and resembles that of a ballerina. Add this to his never say die attitude and we have a formidable opponent. In the end, just like the famous battles at Waterloo and Trafalgar, the match was decided on the slimmest of margins and no small amount of luck. Great game, well played. The fans have been left yearning for more!"  -- Edward

  • "A seesaw match with two very different sets. The first was a fairly quick affair, which ended 6-0. Probably partly guided by the fact I've had the benefit of playing quite a bit of tennis recently, while Nikos has played very little since he's just had a baby. However, in the second, I started to feel really tired, having played football and drunk a lot the day before, and trailed 2-5 at one stage. Fortunately, I found a reserve of energy, stopped hitting it long and managed to recover to win 7-5 in the end. "  -- Adam

  • "This match was played in near freezing conditions, and both players took a while to get warmed up. Sam won a close first set that nearly went to a tie-break, and a few lucky shots from me changed the rhythm of the second set, which eventually continued into the third; both sets with scores that don't really reflect the match. Sam's serve and on-the-line shots are forces to be reckoned with!"  -- Alex

Player Comments:

  • "Alex's different serve and volley style made for an interesting match and a different dynamic to many of the others I've played in the leagues. Alex settled down more quickly and took an early 2-1 lead, coming to the net to good effect. I found a bit more rhythm and managed to take the lead at 4-3. I continued to attack Alex's second serve and went on to win the first set. We then traded breaks at the beginning of the second set until the rhythm of the first was resumed and ended 6-2. Player Comments:

  • "A fun game that probably doesn't reflect the energy and quality of Jamie's play. In the second set, Jamie threatened a comeback when he leveled 3-3 after a lapse of concentration on my part. However, I held serve to go to 4-3, which gave me just enough momentum to see out the match. Having only being playing regularly since May, one can see Jamie is fast improving and I look forward to a rematch in the future."  -- Adam

Player Comments:

  • "This match probably won't go down as a classic, due to the greasy, slippy conditions and the heavy balls, but an enjoyable run-around nonetheless. John took an early 2-0 lead as I shook off the post-NY lethargy, but I rallied to 3-2 as his serve lost some of its early consistency. I continued to play the conditions with lots of slicing and drop-shots, which were dull but effective, and took the first set 6-4. Quality serving was at a premium as we traded brakes at the start of the 2nd set, before the rhythm of the first set was resorted, which saw me pull away to take it 6-3."  -- Adam

  • "For the first time for me in this league the first set went with serve until a tie break, where I finally managed to get the better of Sam's serve. By the second set the cold was getting to us, and a bit of a lull in Sam's serve let me in, although it came back towards the end I was able to close the set out. A fun, close match at a chilly Burgess Park."  -- Mike

Player Comments:

  • "A match which I'm really not sure how I won. Mike dictated a lot of points and had some powerful ground strokes, including a great sidespin forehand that he punished me with regularly. The match started as a rather sluggish pre-Christmas affair with a lot of unforced errors, but as the set wore on Mike, despite being more positive, probably just hit too would-be-winners many long. I took a 2-0 lead early in the second set, but quickly tired and it looked like the comeback was on when Mike leveled at 2-2. However, I won the next game and rode my luck to see out the rest of the set, with some sneaky slices and dropshots. A very enjoyable game."  -- Adam

Player Comments:

  • "We met on a clear crisp December evening to open our first match of the Tournament. After a brief warm up the match started with us both holding serve until Alex broke Jamie to go up 3/1. Jamie fought back and after a long series of Deuce/Adv/Deuce/Adv............. and a lucky lob the score stood at 4 games all. Both breathing hard and having visited all corners of the court Jamie took the first set. If the theme of the first set was base line and centre court shots, the second was a story of volleys and down the line shots. Jamie took the first few games and a late break back from Alex took the game close to the two hour mark with Jamie edging it in the end. A great start to the League and a worthy opponent. "  -- Jamie
