191 matches were played this round which is a great achievement. Unfortunately a few no shows brought down the overall statistics. Do try phoning if you are struggling to hear back via email or messages and if all else fails, contact us and we will try to help. If you are one of those who didn't play any matches at all, hope you can commit another time. Scheduling matches and contacting opponents is quite a skill but is key to making the leagues work.

Group Summary:

A shame to see Dave L have to withdraw, with a torn hamstring, from this active and very competitive group and hope you are on the mend. There was lots of fine tennis here, even if not everyone felt they were always firing on all cylinders. Good to see Tom and Omar played again after a gap of a few years and well done to Vincent, the only person to be undefeated in this very close group. Had he played a few more matches, who knows what might have happened but as it is, David comes top, losing only to Omar and Vincent and Tom is runner up. Congratulations to them and well played all!

Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Omar Cader (Aug 8) 6-2, 3-6, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A very enjoyable match with Omar where I just about hung on to clinch victory. After a very strong start where I led 6-2 3-1, Omar eventually found consistency and the lines on numbers occasions with some inspired play to take the next 6 games to lead 1-0 in the 3rd set. I managed to eventually stop the rot and build a 5-2 lead. Some more inspired patterns of play got Omar back to 5-4, when I eventually held a nervy service game to win the match. Already looking forward to the next one. "  -- Simon

  • "Vincent proved too strong for me again but it was a very enjoyable match, lots of good tennis and great rallies. Look forward to our next match up - Marcos"  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Simon Wood (Jul 29) 6-4, 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Gritty match as Simon made consecutive come backs in both sets, coming from behind as I initially went 5-0 up in the first and 5-2 up in the second. He was unlucky not to win both sets and showed impressive determination and guts, saving a number of set and match points. In the end I was fortunate to hit an ace to finally take the match. I don’t think I would have been able to get across the line otherwise!"  -- Tom
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Brian O'neill (Jul 24) 7-6 (7-2), 7-5

Player Comments:

  • "Attritional match, which started off strong but wilted in the heat. Relieved to see it out in two, as both sets were close and all together over two hours long. "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentOmar Cader bt Marcos Fernandez (Jul 21) 6-2, 5-7, [10-2]

Player Comments:

  • "Error strewn match, both of our forehands were off-mine going long, Marcos into the net. I blame the Head Tour balls we were both using for the first time. Nothing to do with poor footwork or all the distractions of Kennington Park! :-) Hopefully play a better quality game next time, cheers Marcos."  -- Omar

Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Tom Harvey (Jul 16) 6-4, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Real close start and we went back and forth exchanging blows in the first set before a timely break helped me over the line. From then on I was able to take control of the match and despite a reaction in the beginning of the second, I was able to pull away for the victory"  -- David

Match of the Group:

Reveal CommentBrian O'neill bt Omar Cader (Jul 12) 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "Well...on the day that Roger & Rafa renewed their Wimbledon rivalry, Omar & Brian delivered a match for the ages. This match had it all. Unforced errors, double faults, smashes into the net...quite possibly the most woeful tennis that either of us have played in a long time. Despite perfect conditions, we managed to serve up an absolute dire match with both of us striving to see who wanted to lose the match more. I squeaked it, but I take no joy in this victory...it was painful out there! Hopefully the next installment in the rivalry will be back to our usual standards!"  -- Brian
Reveal CommentMarcos Fernandez bt Brian O'neill (Jul 11) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "Nice to meet and play Brian for the first time. A real battle this one that went all the way. Brian is a leftie with a huge flat forehand so I knew where not to hit to it! He smashed many forehand winners passed me and had nice touch near the net. In the 3rd set, Brian ran out of steam a bit and couldn't maintain his consistency allowing me to pull ahead and close out the game. Definitely look forward to our next game!"  -- Marcos
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Omar Cader (Jul 9) 6-4, 6-4

Player Comments:

  • "A close match with a number of entertaining rallies. Omar managed to craft some fantastic points with a mixture of big serving, heavy topspin and delicate touch at the net. A series of tight points at the end of each set could have seen the match go either way so I was relieved to somehow close it out in two. Good to play again after a few years! "  -- Tom
Vincent Rouget bt Simon Wood (Jul 5) 6-2, 6-0
Reveal CommentSimon Wood bt Brian O'neill (Jul 5) 6-3, 3-6, [10-5]

Player Comments:

  • "A very warm welcome to Brian who I believe is making his debut in the Kennington & Brockwell League. The first set was closer than the score suggested with games going with serve until I managed a cheeky break to lead 5-3 and then managed to serve it out. After taking an early lead in set 2, Brian then stepped up the intensity and started to change his play and it worked, racing to a 5-2 lead before serving out the set with a comfortable hold. So on we went to the lottery of the championship tiebreak which I managed to sneak 10-5. A really thoroughly enjoyable match and I am sure Brian will more than hold his own in this league. "  -- Simon
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Dave Loweirnely (Jun 30) 6-0, 7-6 (7-2)

Player Comments:

  • "Happy to have pulled this off as it took Dave 1 set to readjust to my game and with the wind not favouring his style of play, i escaped the second despite failing on several match points "  -- David
Reveal CommentTom Harvey bt Marcos Fernandez (Jun 30) 6-4, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Marcos started strong, playing some fantastic tennis in the opening games. His slice backhand was doing a lot of damage and some of his net play today was impeccable. I managed to get myself back into the set and just about see out a nervy finale. Second set started off close again but I managed to get my nose ahead and maintain the advantage. Fun match with an entertaining hit afterwards - looking forward to our next one! "  -- Tom
Reveal CommentDavid Jovic bt Marcos Fernandez (Jun 24) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Player Comments:

  • "The first part of the match was played under a light drizzle and frankly lacked in entertainment with short games and very few rallies. It seemed like I was cruising to a straight set win when Marcos upped his game significantly and his effective backhand slice came into action to take 4 straight games and the second set. The court dried up for the last set and we were able to re-establish the standard that we are more accustomed to in our matches. Good fun!"  -- David
Simon Wood bt Marcos Fernandez (Jun 21) 6-4, 7-5

Group Summary:

Not quite as busy as group 1, but lots of good tennis nonetheless with 'an absolutely cracking match' between Tom and Timothy, a 'really excellent game' between Tom and Luke and a 'really good match' between Christian and Timothy, though Christian unfortunately broke a string! When the final points were added up, it was a draw between Tom and Robert but as Tom won their head to head, he tops the group. Congratulations!

Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Christian Jaccarini (Jul 17) 6-0, 6-3

Player Comments:

  • "Really good match with tight games throughout, which the scoreline doesn’t do justice to. Christian was unlucky to break a string one point into the match, and didn’t fully find his rhythm in the first set. The second set hinged on a few close games, all of which went to deuce - often multiple times. Great to stay on for a hit afterwards; look forward to next time. "  -- Timothy
Paolo Giua bt Thomas Phillips (Jul 15) 6-0, 6-1
Reveal CommentTimothy Jones bt Luke Abnett (Jul 10) 7-5, 6-1

Player Comments:

  • "A pleasure to reignite my tennis rivalry with Luke; our matches in the past have always been close and this was no exception - the 10-minute opening service game with numerous deuces very much set the tone for a tight battle. I was fortunate to come away with the first set, especially given it was Luke who had displayed laser-sharp focus to block out almost constant distractions from other players and ‘spectators’. The second set was equally close, with the scoreline disguising a lot of very tight games once again. "  -- Timothy

Group Summary:

A three way tie on points at the top of this group between Christopher, Dejan and Edward, which sends us scurrying for the rule book, a dusty tome we have to heave out every so often but one full of insight and our guide to fair play. As it reveals the first way to split a tie is to look at the head to heads and as luck would have it, in this instance, that was all we needed to do. Christopher beat both Dejan and Edward so comes top, and Dejan beat Edward so comes second. But the unofficial prize for scribe of the group (and indeed the round) goes to Edward, whose comments were so entertaining, we've just been reading them out to the office! Many congratulations all round!

  • "They say Tuesday is the most productive day of the week. Judging by the output on show from these players productivity levels in South London this Tuesday evening went through the roof and would be something that a medium sized economy would be happy with! It's been calculated that if you could capture the energy levels on Kennington park court 3 that evening then you could power 500 toasters - that's a lot of toast. Anyway, I digress. The tennis on display was superb with Paul's forehand slap across the court proving vicious. The crowd were delirious as South London re-discovered it's love for amateur park based tennis now that they had been released from the vice like grip of Love Island (congrats to Greg and Amber btw). Well played all! "  -- Edward

After promising for so long and being greeted at the door with nothing but a consistent drizzle and a blustery wind for the past 4 weeks, summer 2019 finally decided to turn up. Better late than never eh?! And whilst SW17 might be the place to be next week, on this occasion it was certainly SE17 where all the coolest, hippest tennis fans were hanging out. The play on court was exquisite and even made those watching forget their cool, canned craft ale and wavy hair for a minute as they went wild for what they saw. One thing the crowd learnt was approach the net at your peril against Andrew! He’ll smash that ball past you quicker than when a hungry hyena spots a free Dominoes, #EyesOnThePrize. Top tennis. Player Comments:

  • "A prompt response for a replacement opponent meant neither player had time to do their homework. But fans werent disappointed - when they eventually deduced which of Brockwell's unnumbered courts, an inexplicable state of affairs, must be Court 3. A cagey opening gave way to Drysdale seizing the initiative and taking a 5-2 lead, outslicing Tomlins on the backhand side and punishing a raft of unforced errors. But Coco Gauff's near-miraculous comeback the precious evening and the unwarranted interjections of a friend on adjacent court strengthened Tomlins' resolve to keep clinging on. A change of style resulted in 10 unanswered games, turning the match on its head and finishing in 2 sets. Drama befitting of the Wimbledon fortnight."  -- Ollie

Group Summary:

Fantastic commitment in this group where a very high percentage of matches were played. Nick invited Mark to play at this club on the grass - lovely stuff - ; Adam and Hugo played 'a cracker'; Mark's drop shots had Hugo running all over the court and in a re-match between Adam and Oliver, everything this time came together for Adam. Sorry to hear Arthur put his back out and hope you are on the mend. In a group full of drama and cheerful rivalries, Oliver prevailed to take the top spot with Mihai one point behind and Mark one point behind him. Well played all!

  • "It's great to get a win against Oliver. As he pointed out before the match, my record against him is not good. While true, it perhaps isn't a comment out of the top draw of Jose Mourinho mind games. To be honest, it was a match where everything came together for me. The first set was tight, with just one break going my way. My serve, accuracy and crucially concentration held in the second, and I didn't allow Oli to suck me into the street fight out games usually become. I have no doubt there will be a rematch. Although the pundits will be asking 'what mental scars will Oli be left with?' ;)"  -- Adam

At the final count, Lucas earned the most points but kudos to runner up Sam P and also to Sam A who both beat the champ. Congratulations all.

Group Summary:

Funny how matches go in tennis. Benedict lost the second set 1-6 in his match against Niall, was 5-8 down in the third set tie break, and couldn't serve it out at 9-8. Yet he still pulled through, showing the kind of determination required to take you to 5 wins and the group title this time. Well played. Elsewhere in this competitive and good natured group, Sunkalp said "I don't think I've ever won more points via favourable net chords," than when he played Dom, and Suzanne managed to beat runner up Niall despite his serve which can "make it through the fence when it's really firing'.
